The last year of elementary school is big for every kid. Christine Gouda faces change at every turn, starting with her own nickname—Tink—which just doesn't fit anymore. Karen Romano Young is the author of young adult novels as well as nonfiction books and magazine articles. Although Small Worlds: Maps and Mapmaking is her first book for Scholastic, she has contributed to Scholastic magazines for the past twenty years. Her other credits include Cricket, National Geographic World, and The Guinness Book of World Records.

This was a one-sitting read, though several times throughout the novels I felt uncomfortable enough to think about DNFing it. While the talk and worries about losing your best friend to the 'popular' crowd, going through puberty, moving on to the middle school, etc were all age-appropriate and genuine, SO much of this book had my skin crawling.

A girl's mother is constantly (aka I lost count) referred to as a slut - by both adults and children, for the school talent show Tink and her group stage a performance of The Rolling Stones' Honky Tonk Women, complete with bar-room brawl and "she tried to take me upstairs for a ride", but what really sealed the deal was the boy (an 11-year-old) who told Tink multiple times that she would "look good naked." No. Noooo.

Yes, kids this age are going to swear and make comments about sex, but this book took it too far. Also, I was a little confused by the music included. Any band mentioned was something their parents would have grown up with: Sonny & Cher, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, etc. I don't know if Young just doesn't know of any current bands or what, but that struck me as odd.

I haven't been this conflicted about a book in a while. I taught 6th grade for ten years and I recognize Karen Romano Young has accurately captured the emotional, physical, and intellectual turmoil of this age. The writing is outstanding and the characters believable and complex. However, I have some real issues with the book. The recommended grade level according the Amazon page is 3rd-7th and I absolutely would not place this book in an elementary classroom or library. First, the use of words like slut and slutty, the mention of the slur "horny skank" and repeated references to "sleeping together" and the sex lives of parents may reflect how middle schoolers talk to each other, but it's problematic in a middle grade novel. I suspect no K-6 school like the one students attend in the book will carry it. While the children in the book are reading Brave New World and To Kill a Mockingbird, these texts are beyond the reading abilities of most sixth graders, and would not be used as whole class reads for this age group. I taught clusters of gifted kids in 6th grade and only a handful of my most gifted students would have been interested in (or capable of fully comprehending) these texts. Last, the musical performance near the end of the book where students pretend they are in a bar romancing women while lip syncing "Honky Tonk Women" would not happen in a school performance at a K-6 school without justified complaints from parents. I know that my experience is limited to only the schools where I have taught and the hundreds of schools I have visited over the years. Perhaps, Karen Romano Young has experiences that differ from mine and the many teachers and children I know. Having written all of this, I would still have this book in my middle school classroom library on my mature shelf along with the YA, so I could individually recommend it to readers who were ready for the content or facing similar struggles. Not a book for everyone, but a meaningful book for someone.

The blurbs for Hundred Percent state that the book delves into the true emotions and experiences of a sixth grader, and that it does. It actually is so realistic that it will make adults, myself included, a bit uncomfortable. Thinking back to sixth grade, it was the time where everyone was figuring out their identities: social, emotional, physical, sexual. Hundred Percent captures this. Tink is trying to figure out who her friends are, if it is worth liking boys, how to deal with changes all over the place, and so much more. I do know that there are parts of the book that some adults will be uncomfortable with their students/child reading if they are the same age as Tink. For example, there are derogatory terms used such as slut/slutty and horny skank, a lip syncing scene to “Honky Tonk Women,” and a discussion of what “sleeping together” is. Although this may be a bit uncomfortable, the more I think about the more I have come to realize that these conversations are definitely happening between 6th graders, and we can’t, as the adults in their life, pretend like they are not (though I still don’t know why the teachers let them choose “Honky Tonk Women”). With all this being said, I still think this text is for our most mature sixth graders, but those students need Tink’s story.

I've seen friends' reviews of this book that say they're conflicted about this book, and I completely agree. The prose is often beautiful describing the most mundane experiences lyrically. The story, though it seems overall realistic with Tink searching for her place in the social hierarchy, finds itself too mature in parts so much so that it felt less reliable as a sixth grade narrator. I do think that there are middle school readers will connect with Tink though her experiences are not appropriate for all the same age as she is.

Kids will enjoy and might just see themselves in one of Romano Young’s well developed, interesting, and fun characters. There is Matthew, aka Bushwhack, the “class clown” who is good at slinging insults disguised as regular words (e.g. “you eject button,” “you paper cutter,” “you doorbell”). Teachers ban his most famous made-up word, “bushwah,” but kids use it incognito by saying “two words.” Debbie is the new kid who lives on a huge farm with beautiful horses, but not all is what it seems. Bobby, Jesse’s son, completely confuses and complicates Jackie’s life— or maybe, it is she who confuses his life. Will, Mitze, Maggie, Jonas, and Keith, are the “in circle” kids, and can be as mean as any middle grade bully can.

And then there is Jackie, Tink’s best friend since “forever.” Tink must decide if . . .

I have rather mixed feelings about this book. While the book does contain issues and problems common to 6th grade, there were several things I had a problem with as well. Tink is an interesting character who feels like a real 11-almost 12-year-old who worries about things like friendship, boys, and school. Tink's best friend, Jackie is being included within the 'circle' of so-called popular kids, and while Jackie brings Tink along most of the time, Tink isn't sure where she fits. As Tink starts to figure out her own interests and likes, she starts to realize that the popular 'circle' isn't necessarily where she wants to be. But at the same time she's hurt being left out and by Jackie's confusing behavior. As she struggles with jealousy, she also struggles to figure out what boy she likes the best. All of this is very reminiscent of this age group. I did appreciate the relationships between Tink and her family, they felt very genuine. And it was refreshing to see both parents involved and worried about their daughter and her struggles.

However, some of the frank and often inappropriate discussions between the characters bothered me a bit as did the frequent use of swear words and the word 'slut'. The amount of sexual innuendo including a boy telling Tink straight out that she would 'look good naked' shocked me a bit at their frankness. As do discussions between Tink and Jackie about Jackie's mother's boyfriend and Jackie's crush on her mother's boyfriend's son. In addition, Tink and some of her classmates put together a sing-a-long around a man and women in a bar that I'm pretty sure no teacher would approve. So while talk between friends about bras and sex doesn't seem extremely out of place, the focus on it for this age group made me really uncomfortable. This isn't a book I would feel comfortable sharing with my students. I also found the wording a bit awkword and confusing in places. I had to go back and re-read some of the dialogue to figure out what was being discussed.

Romano Young really taps into that middle-grade voice in our main character, Tink. Tink's dialogue really jumps around in just a few sentences, she is talking about everything from her love of Peter Pan, to kids barking like dogs to wanting to know if she's pretty or cute. There is a focus on boys, wanting to be seen as cute, liked, thinking you are overweight which did take me back to listening to kids this age talking and in some cases to my own middle school feelings. I liked how Young expressed that feeling of having a circle of friends and then one of your friends is suddenly more popular leaving you feeling like you're looking in on the circle instead of being a part of it. Or sometimes seeing the popular kids in their own circle and wishing you could belong. Overall, my favorite moments were when Tink began to get comfortable in her "own skin" and stopped worrying about what others might think about her and looked at what was outside the circle. There is some content (a boy commenting to Tink that she would look good naked and some swearing) to be aware of, but overall it's a story about trying to find your place while navigating middle school.

I had completely forgotten what 6th grade was like- maybe I just buried the memory on purpose. This wonderful little gem of a book took me right back there in a way that was completely visceral. I remember the insecure teasing and not knowing what to think of it. I remember hearing awkward discussions of a sexual nature, but not really getting it. I remember not knowing who was cool, or where I fit in the hierarchy of circles of friends.
Tink, the central character, is a girl who develops physically before her understanding of who she really is. She is a girl growing into herself.
There is nothing preachy about this book- the reader is taken on a journey to middle school with characters that I would like to visit again when they are a bit older.
As to a couple of other comments on this book about age-appropriateness of the sexual awareness, I found it spot-on with the current sixth grade classroom. They do discuss issues that are far above their ability to decipher their meaning...but that conversation is for another day.
I loved this book and the characters in it. Tink is just the girl I wish I had known then, and I am glad to know her now.

Hundred Percent is the nickname of a girl named Tink (well, that's also a nickname, but she's been going by Tinkerbell since she was little) who is navigating the special drama that comes with being twelve. Popular and unpopular. Nicknames and name-calling. Divorce and dating. Dogs and cat-calls. Rolling Stones and Mad Magazine.

Much of the story is taken up with Tink's relationship with her best friend Jackie, who is cute and popular and boy crazy. Lots of wondering about boys and wishing to be kissed and wanting to "go out" even though none of them are actually old enough to date. As a reader, I was restless because the story doesn't have a clear direction. I prefer a clear wish/want/goal/problem, but this wanders from one thing to the next without tying things together. While I missed that sense of purpose, Young does meander to a satisfying finish.

This book tells a lot about a fast growing girl and her perspective of the universe. It tells you a lot about her on- off (not so loyal) best friend, Jackie. Jaqueline (Jackie) goes to the party Tink's not invited to and doesn't follow her promise about inviting her. Along with that, Tink and Jackie are going boy crazy and are having trouble finishing the year. Will Tink survive sixth grade? Tink feels invisible. Eddie doesn't like her and she feels friend-less. No one remembers she exists even when she was hanging out with the circle when Will Wheeler chipped a tooth.

Stanley, a new kid finds her beautiful. They share a love of drawing. Even when Stanley says he likes drawing naked girls, she likes him. He even thinks Tink will look good naked. Tink loved Will, then Bushwhack (Matt) but decides to love Stanley instead. Then she finds that he is not so interesting. She had already drawn a picture of her and Stanley kissing but won't look at it. Then she realizes that Bushwhack is the love of her life. She, Jackie, Amy and Bobby come closer together. But will Bushwhack join Tink? READ THE BOOK TO FIND OUT! People who like realistic fiction will probably like this book.

Although I am a great deal older than the target audience, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It had a certain Judy Blume feel to it. I could be wrong there as it's been about 40 years since I've read anything by her but that was the impression I was left with. I tried to imagine my 10-year old self reading this book and think I would have loved it. The book follows Tink (real name Christine) through the trials of her sixth grade year. The author (if my recollection is correct) really nailed all the woes of being a sixth grader from the agony of one's standing in the popularity hierarchy to the discovery of boys (which is not often reciprocated at that age) to flirtations and experimentations with teenage behaviors. I would highly recommend this book to the pre-teen set and to those adults who want to feel like they're 10 again.

If you are in small town America, in a school district where sixth grade is not part of middle school, this book would be an excellent addition to your school library. The book is very well written, with thoughtfully depicted characters. Pre teen girls can easily find themselves in the MC, Tink (or Chris or Hundred Percent), and her best friend , Jackie. As in so many other books written for this age group, the girls have reached the place where their lives change as well as their outlook. Sometimes change is difficult and unsettling.
The book takes place taking the course of the sixth grade year. While I think emotions are universal, the book is awkward, in making these emotions relevant to many of today's pre teens.

I had difficulty actually getting into this book. It was confusing and didn’t flow well. I kept reading and it was full of girl drama that just played out awkwardly. While I do understand the character development, it didn’t resonate with me. I also have a hard time seeing my students liking it, however, I could be wrong.

On the cover of this book, it has Rebecca Stead calling this book. "Brilliant and irresistible." Really, Rebecca Stead? Did you read the whole book? It is as far away from brilliant and irresistible as is possible. It was inappropriate, cringe-worthy in parts, lacking much character development and as another reviewer wrote, more of an adult reflecting on their middle school experience than a middle schooler's perspective. The words slut, slutty, and sexy are constantly used toward one of the character's mothers and the main character, Tink. While at the beginning of the novel, boys are barking at Tink because she is ugly, at the end a new boy says he wants to see her naked. No explanation for the change in view apart from maybe because the boy is new and has different standards? It is mentioned that after Tink "breaks up with him" (although no break up was verbalised), he serenades the only other girl in the class with breasts. There is a bizarre scene at the beginning of the novel when Tink knocks the teeth out of a boy she likes by pushing him into the water fountain. Then another boy unscrews all the nails in the bathroom stalls which narrowly misses crashing down on one of their classmates. One character does nothing but insult everyone and this is considered endearing. Honestly this was such a painful book to read. I dragged through it only finishing it to be able to write a review of the whole book and not part of the book. As a teacher and a librarian, there is no way a school would ever allow sixth grade students to do a lip synch show with the song Honky Tonk Women. And, in what school do they provide school hours for students to stage and rehearse such a show?

The author should stick to her science books as this was a major miss for me.

Christine Bernadette Gouda, aka "Tink," "Chris," or "Hundred Percent," is starting 6th grade and trying to figure out who she is. Is she Tink, the little girl? Chris, the sophisticated 6th grader? Or class clown Bushwhack's friend, Hundred Percent? Christine is a likable, relatable character and feels so real as she deals with the ups and downs of navigating that awkward place between child and teen. I love that the book follows her entire sixth grade year and is full of regular, everyday life. The main characters are all unique and such fun to read about, even when they're behaving less-than admirably (or maybe especially then). I particularly liked the characters Christine, Jackie, Bushwhack, Keith, and Amy. This is a great book for any kid who is feeling in-between.

Can you ever be a hundred percent sure of who you are? Sixth grade is a time of self-discovery, learning who is really your friend and turmoil.. Tink starts out the year wanting to get rid of her childish nickname and become Chris, but the others aren’t ready. There are the usual 6th grade set of maturities - the dorky boys, the in-crowd, and everyone struggling with physical and emotional and hormonal issues. (Understanding teachers deserve a lot of praise for handling these kids)
Young through Tink’s eyes takes on these issues and the antics of the preteens with insight and depth. A word of warning tough is necessary. There is implied sexual relationships with some of the parents but this is not the main focus. Preteens might find this a book that helps them understand that they are not experiencing these "ordeals" alone.

Describes middle school perfectly

This book took me back to the awkward 12-14 year old stage. You don’t know how to feel, who to like, and your body is changing. Some are more ready and some are more mature. My 6th grade experience was so similar to Tink’s.

The book itself was a 3.5-not that exciting or profound. I felt drawn in and read it quickly because of how easily I connected and related to the story. The early middle school age is so complicated and frustrating. This book does a great job reminding us how hard it is transitioning from child to teen. It also does a great job explaining it from different views. Each kid is different and matures at different rates.

Christine Gouda thinks she's ready for sixth grade, her last year in elementary school. But things begin to change when she and best friend Jackie discover they can't dress alike the first day of school. Christine (aka Tink, Hundred Percent, and Chris) has a figure and Jackie...doesn't. Jackie is pulled into the circle of popular kids, and she doesn't make an effort to include Tink. Boys take on a new importance to both of them, which is possibly most confusing of all.

This middle grade novel is 100% perfect in pulling readers into the confusion, missteps, and uncertainty of sixth grade. An excellent read for middle-graders and those of us who used to be.

Fun, sad, realistic story about one girls 6th grade year. It is a story about friendship and trying to figure out who you are or who you want to be.
Tink wants to be more grown up, but maybe not as grown up as her friend Jackie seems to be. As the year goes on, she makes friends outside of Jackie's group, the girls fight, make up, and fight some more. At the end, Tink realizes she needs to decide who she is going to be, not to let others decide it for her.

Definite YA due to vocabulary, not so much due to action or behaviors.

Sixth grade is tough. There are the cliques, the boy/girl issues, and the desire to define yourself as you move from child to teen. Tink is facing all of these problems and more. First of all, is "Tink" really what this now overly tall girl should be called? If not that, what? Friend trouble and idiot boys are balanced out by a supportive family and unexpected successes. This gets down into the pain and angst of the age, while offering hope. Middle school lovers of realistic fiction will see themselves reflected in this story.

I've been reading a lot of middle grade realism over the last few years and themes of social inclusion/exclusion/confusion are common! Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy the way it was explored in this novel. The main problem I had was with the main character. The way she was written made her seem cynical and separate from everything that was going on, 'above' all the emotional tangles. She didn't feel like a middle grader to me, but like an adult stuck in middle grade. She never seemed emotionally involved in any of the things happening to her, and so was constantly angry and annoyed with all the young people who WERE emotionally involved and trying to figure things out. I found that attitude made all the tangles tedious to read. Not a book for me.

I almost didn't keep reading this book after the first few chapters. I'm not sure what compelled me forward, but I'm so glad - the book is about girl drama, about navigating changing friendships and changing you - and who you want to be and who you feel you have to be. I honestly could not finish the book. I was reading it on Kindle and found that most of it did not make sense. I tried to read it twice, but did not enjoy it. I felt like it needed more emotion. Got this book at a children's book swap event at school and it's my first post-end of the semester read! It was cute but I wasn't entirely sold on it. It was fine.
