She was the wallflower beneath his notice…until a terrible mistake has one dangerous, delicious rake believing she's the "fair Cyprian" ordered for his pleasure.
Lady Henrietta has always known her place—in her dazzling older sister’s shadow. She’s a little brown peahen to Araminta’s bird of paradise.
But when the innocent debutante is mistaken for her common namesake "Hetty" and embroiled in the Regency underworld, she finds herself shockingly compromised by the dashing, dangerous Sir Aubrey, the very gentleman her heart desires. And the man Araminta has in her cold, calculating sights.
Branded an enemy of the Crown, bitter over the loss of his wife, Sir Aubrey wants only to lose himself in the warm, willing body of the young “prostitute” Hetty. As he tutors her in the art of lovemaking, Aubrey is pleased to find Hetty not only an ardent student but a bright, witty and charming companion.
Despite a spoiled Araminta plotting for a marriage offer and a powerful political enemy damaging his reputation, Aubrey believes he's been set up to suffer his greatest betrayal at the hands of the little “concubine” who’s managed to breach the stony exterior of his heart.
Until the 'the little brown peahen' reveals her true colors.

Lady Sarah’s Redemption Lady Olivia’s Butterfly A Little Deception
Taking up with the Partington family several months after the close of Her Gilded Prison, this installment focuses on shy daughter Hetty as she tries to outmaneuver her bitch extraordinaire sister Araminta. Now that Araminta has lost dream lover Stephen to her cougar mama, she focuses on suspected traitor and/or wife-beater Sir Aubrey as her next match. But Hetty, who has silently admired Aubrey from afar, doesn't believe either charge against his reputation. She sets out to clear his name with some Scooby detecting...
...And in the process is mistaken for a hooker by not only Aubrey, but villainous asshole Lord Debenham. It's absolutely adorable, in that lolzy Dynasty kind of way. :D
Aubrey is a total mimbo -- he's the sort of hero who defines 'arm candy.' Hetty is what makes the book work. Her unswerving devotion isn't reserved for Aubrey, but extends to her family as well, even when they don't deserve it. I liked her, though. She's sweet but not unbelievably so. The red-alert Kill Bill moment when she unravels her father's other life is classic. :D And I loved her attitude about sex -- i.e., so certain of a loveless marriage (or perhaps no marriage at all) that she seizes the chance to brazen it out & enjoy herself.
Aubrey, for his part, isn't a cad; he's not down with deflowering virginal debutantes, but deflowering newbie hookers is right up his alley. ;) He's also a complete idiot, as revealed when Araminta disguises herself as Hetty & impales herself on his mighty cock. Dude, a simple veil shouldn't be enough to obscure identity. He's a bear of very little brain.
Araminta is beyond extra, what with her endless cutting remarks & zero redeemable qualities. And that's what makes her such fun to hate. :D She can have no better match than Evul Lord Debenham, the sort who kicks puppies & steals candy from toddlers while conspiring to commit treason. And that final bit of dialogue where Aubrey describes his future happiness as built on trust & mutual regard...I lol'd. 'The More You Know' stars were zinging left & right.
Great fun, silly & entertaining. Squeamish readers should be aware of 'unsafe' plot elements like cheating & unhappy feelz...YAY! Because those drippy 'soothing avocado mask' romances just aren't for me.
This is my 3rd effort by Ms Oakley & I've enjoyed them all. :) It's another repackaged Ellora's Cave, but the other books in this series are independently pub'd & I look forward to seeing the stories expand a bit in terms of page count.
I enjoy romance in a lot of forms and the combination of a historical romance with the extra drama sounded great. However, I was really disappointed. The characters, mainly Hetty and Sir Aubrey, were often childish in their way of thinking and I could not relate to them at all. And Araminta was a nasty excuse for a sister. This has been told numerous times before, the mean beautiful sister and the kind, not equally pretty one. But for me this book took it to far.
However, there were parts that were more or less entertaining and had the author not added, in the end of the book, the scene with Araminta and Sir Aubrey (Spoiler!) where Araminta pretended to be Hetty and seduced Sir Aubrey, I would have given it more stars then 1.
Read this for the premise but I didn't connect with it as much as I would have liked. High scores for unconventional scenes, particularly with the nasty sister. However, I felt like the ending was a cop-out. Aubrey is on the brink of telling Hetty what happened but Hetty basically says, hush my love. I know you love me so you don't have to tell me anything that happened in the past. Like WHAT. I felt robbed of a comeuppance.
I found this a good book. Hetty is a great character. She is a caring sensitive person and would always do what is right. Lord Aubrey is her one true love and the person who needs her help.
This was an okay book...not great, not bad. It jumps around quite a bit, but has good moments of dialogue and situational humor. It was difficult to understand the hero's personality and motivations...he was all over the map. I did find, though, Hetty to be sweet and a pure soul.
There really isn't anyone to like. I kept reading (and skipping) to find out what happened at the end and find it continues. The H and h get their happy ending so you get that closure. Not a PG rating. I have to say that I did finish it so it did keep my interest. Recency era.
Hetty hid in the fronds of a potted palm, brushing beetles off her chest. This was not the best way to make a London debut! She watched her sister attract many gentlemen, and she was currently dancing with Sir Aubrey Banks for the third time, a man Hetty found very pleasing!
But two women stood in front of her hiding place and began to discuss poor Hetty, who could never compare to her beautiful sister. Her prospects could not be good, they said, but her large dowry might attract where her plain looks would not. As she watched Sir Aubrey dance with others, her cousin Stephen came up behind her and smacked her on her bottom, asking who had her undivided attention! He warned her not to focus on Sir Aubrey because of his past, then led her to the dance floor for a dance.
When circumstances bring Hetty and Sir Aubrey together finally -- as she has sneaked into his empty room for a quick peek -- he doesn’t recognize her. He tells her how he was attacked in the street, explaining the blood on his clothing when he came into the room. He takes off his shirt, amused at her wide-eyed reaction. She doesn’t tell him who she really is, so he proceeds on the assumption that she is a prostitute sent by Maggie Montgomery from the brothel. Had he seen her there before? She did seem familiar somehow . . . After giving her several chances to leave, making sure this was what she wanted, he gently makes her his. Will this situation ruin her, or is there another path for her future?
This was a different kind of story, with a touch of mystery added concerning a murder, who was covering it up, and for what purpose! The characters were well presented and left no confusion as to whether they were likable or not! I immediately disliked Hetty’s older sister who had nothing at all to admire. She was arrogant and selfish, plotting in her own best interests regardless of anyone else. Her sister Hetty was likable, but she made foolish choices at times. Sir Aubrey was sometimes likable and sometimes not. So it was a good mixture for the reader. The story line was steadily paced, as the reader learned the details surrounding Sir Aubrey’s being framed for the death of his wife. I enjoyed the way the author dealt with the multiple story lines, and recommend this book.
All Hail Henrietta!! A Regency heroine who is NOT Goody Two Shoes, but is clever, loyal, and a real grown woman! I love how she takes matters into her own capable hands. I love that she makes no excuses for her mistakes, won't lie to herself, and won't knuckle under to her despicable sister, Araminta. And I love how she fights for her man! Speaking of whom... Sir Aubrey Banks is under the mistaken impression that he isn't in love. He's laboring under the delusion that the campaign to smear his reputation will ruin him. He's thinking that his safety and social status might be more secure if he marries Araminta. He also mistakes Henrietta for a lightskirt. Not the brightest lantern, Sir Aubrey. Good thing Henrietta is prepared to set him straight... Lovely romance, steamy forbidden assignations, lots of sneaking and scheming, and a pair of frenemy/sisters who need husbands NOW!! I thank Candid Book Reviews for the ARC, and this is a voluntary, independent review.
This is an intriguing and romantic story. Sir Aubrey is bold and arrogant but he also sweet and caring. Hetty is quiet and insecure but also daring and brave. He doesn't even notice her as herself, he can only see her pretty sister, until he finds her in his bedroom and thinks she's a special temptation that a certain madame sent to him. Then he's utterly captivated by her. But while they are engaging in clandestine meetings, her sister is actively seeking a marriage proposal from him. Add in a stolen letter that may clear him of the accusations that he is a traitor, and you get betrayal after betrayal. His behavior towards the sisters, and her sisters behavior between him and the man who's accusing him, is sort of like watching a tennis game, neither seem to be able to make a decision and stick to it. I couldn't put it down, I couldn't wait to see who ended up with whom. And the I can't wait to see how the shocking twist at the turns out. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Candid Book Reviews. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.
In the second book in this series, Lady Henrietta meets up with Sir Aubrey in a most unusual situation which totally compromises her. She has admired him from afar for a while and while her love for him grows, she is never certain that he feels the same way for her. And then we have the nasty, controlling sister who "wants it all" for herself. Riches, marriage, attention, you name it and she goes after it regardless of who she hurts in the process. The two sisters are like chalk and cheese. This story is full of twists and turns, intrigue, mystery, betrayal, romance and love. It will keep you reading and loving every situation as it is presented. Beverley Oakley has written an interesting and captivating story which I loved from the first page onwards and I look forward to reading more from her pen.
Dangerous Gentlemen by Beverley Oakley is a phenomenal read. Ms Oakley has delivered a story that is well-written and you won't want to put it down. This is a fairly short read, the perfect choice for historical romance lovers that don't have much time for reading. Hetty and Sir Aubrey's story is full of suspense, drama and sizzle when Hetty's sister (you'll love to hate her, I promise) tries to ensnare Sir Aubrey for herself. Hat's off to Ms Oakley for her amazing cast of characters. I enjoyed reading Dangerous Gentlemen and look forward to reading more from Beverley Oakley in the future. Dangerous Gentlemen is book 2 of the Daughters Of Sin Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily read a free copy of this book that I received from Bookfunnel.
A story that kept me intrigued with the situation the wallflower Hetty got herself. With a selfish sister overshadowing her, her lack of self-confidence and low self-esteem Hetty acted upon the impulses of her heart and put herself in a very compromising and dangerous ways. Liked the suspense, the drama, the twists, the heated passion and the mystery around the characters. Hated Araminta’s character, her deceptions and wicked ways and hope she meet her match. Read Her Gilded Prison some time ago and enjoyed this second book with the entertaining characters, the drama, the mystery in the plot development, and the boldness of the female characters that had kept me interested all the time. Liked this story with its no orthodox characters that amused me.
Mixed Feelings 3.5* I enjoyed this story though I did feel there were some inconsistencies that were glossed over and unless Sir Aubrey is honest with his new wife as to what happened at the end of the book, their new marriage could easily fall apart (and I must admit that part of the story left me with a nasty taste in my mouth). There is nothing very deep about any of the characters nor their motivations. The only one I got to feel strongly about was Araminta (Hetty’s sister) who is self-centred, self-serving and a thoroughly unpleasant individual. I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book from eBookDiscovery. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The regency love story of the couple was good with a lot of drama which did get a little dangerous. Their love story is gripping. I enjoy reading regency and always expect the snotty bunch, in this case I just did not like that the sisters were played against one another for the affections of the same man, which dominated the plot. I guess it was to be a mystery of who gets the man but the extent of the one-sided rivalry & vindictiveness was too much for me and took away from more one on one romance time the couple could have.
I am volunteering to leave a review of this ARC book. I have to admit, I was getting a bit behind with reading this book, and decided to read some reviews. When I saw the average stars, I thought, oh no. But, I read anyway, as I do love a historical romance. I'm going to raise the average. I really enjoyed Hetty's shenanigans, and I was rooting for her to win Sir Aubrey's heart. Araminta was the beautiful but ugly sister, always managing to make Hetty feel the ugly duckling. Will Hetty get Sir Aubrey in the end, or will her very scheming sister?
Lady Henrietta (Hetty) has admired Sir Aubrey and has admired him for awhile. Her sister is much prettier than herself, she is just a "plan Jane" She is the aggressive one and goes after what she wants. Sir Aubrey takes a liking to Hetty, There are of course other characters that compliment the book. They have chemistry. There is mystery, betrayal, romance and love.
The premise sounded interesting but it certainly didn't live up to expectations. The heroine and hero were not in the least likeable. She was an idiot most of the time, and he was mostly just plain icky. He certainly didn't come off as being a romantic hero.
Loved reading about Hetty/Henrietta ,the youngest sibling.Daughters of sin book 2.Was as good as first.A well thought out story of love and cunning of two sisters ,one a shy and insecure. The other a selfish domineering tyrant. But all comes to the shy young miss when she stands up for herself.A must read.
The ending is horrible. I was rooting for Hetty and wished that everything went smoothly to the end. But the have her husband accidentally had sex with her sister is just awful. It made me wish I didn’t purchased and read the book. Yes, Hetty got to married the man she loves but to add that bit about what the sister did to her husband just ruined the book for me.
I loved this entire series so much that I read one after the other until I was done. So much fun and I couldn't wait to find out what happened to this crazy bunch of sisters and the author didn't let me down.
This is a story of 2 very stupid sisters who play an extremely dangerous game of one upmanship. The hero is an ass - and the romance is absolutely nonexistent. This is a series and the synopsis shows all the sisters just as deplorable. I'll try one more.
This is another brilliantly written, steamy at times story that is a great addition to this sub-series. All the characters are amazing and have quite the emotional journey to navigate, which culminates in another thrilling weddings.
This was a time killer for me. I thought it would be a fun book because the first one was rated well. Characters were contrived and I just didn't find it as good as I had hoped. Ending was a disappointment, too.
Overly dramatic with a silly heroine who gets into erotic scrapes, not all wanted. If the writing style is consistent then I will give up on this author.
this is not my genre.. it really isnt.. so im reviewing on the writing.. it is very well done.. the characters are likable and i enjoy the storyline.. i just don't enjoy this genre.
