This audio collection includes previously aired NPR Road Trip segments which have been grouped into five categories -- Family Vacations, Roadside Attractions, Postcards from Around the Globe, National Park Adventures, and Fairs and Festivals. The listener gets a variety of experiences without ever leaving the comforts of home or the uncomfortable airplane seat where I listened to most of the collection. Memorable segments for me included Blue Chevrolet where a family stuffs 5 kids into an un-air-conditioned, non-seat belt car for a 3-day road trip to Maine, Old Army Friends, Divided at Gettysburg, an homage to all the Civil War battlefields that my father took his family on summer vacation in a green VW van, and The Funnel Cake King where one family found fame and fortune making funnel cakes on the fair and show circuit for nearly 40 years. This collection has something for everyone.

This was great and it informs my own writing having grown up just a mile or so from the Indiana state fairgrounds. Everything in this is interesting and is a great reminder of the traditions of showmanship of fairs. circuses, carnivals and coliseum performances people my age and generations before us, grew up with. Just magical. I loved every minute of this Am I too old now to run away with the circus? I'm fairly tempted to step right up and give it a whirl, ladies and gents, children of all ages.

I love all the production that goes into an NPR recording, bcuz it was a radio program. So much more than just listening to someone read a book, there’s music & natural background noises, including animals. This really did make me feel like I’d travelled around! I think I’ll look to see what other NPR recordings are available at my library.

I really wanted to love this collection of NPR stories for a recent roadtrip with my husband, but it fell short. A couple of the stories we ended up skipping just to save our sanity while driving. The stories were short and we learned a few interesting things, but overall it would not be a repeat nor a recommendation.

Actually listened to this on a road trip! Many nice stories from around the world; my favorite ones were from journalists' own memories. The collection is a bit dated, but are from what I consider the zenith of NPR goodness, although one story was from the now-cancelled Garrison Keillor.
