Well met again, Fae of Demesne of Purgatory. In this sixth installment of SoulShares series, they were still facing their long enemy, the Marfach in their walking dead Janek's putrefied glory. The new face to the mix was Fiachra Dubhdara, or Darkwood as known by his fellow police officers, a dark fae in a stolen body of blond god; and his scair-anam, or SoulShare, Japanese-descent Peregrine Took "Peri" Katsura (yes, his mother named him after a Hobbit, go figure ^^).

Having followed this series series from the start, I'm familiar with a lot of "regular" terms but still stopped once in a while at the convos in fae language. Knowing the background story and where these group in their stand-off with the Marfach also helped understand and enjoying this book a lot, which is why I wouldn't suggest it to be read as a standalone. Each stories in this series should be read in consecutive order.

SoulShares is one of the few series I wouldn't mind so much with steamy scenes in graphic details; those being part of the story. Though in this book I was a bit uncomfortable with Peri's background, considering his line of work. There were also brutal scenes, both implied and told, here.

I have come to accept further installments in the series would not solely focus on single pair of SoulShares as also happened in this book. The down side for me was it made the connection between Fiachra and Peri felt too rushed; and their personal issues (of course they would have personal issues, these were lost souls, fcs!) were not fully explored as they had to share pages with the other couples and some second characters.

The upside, of course, we got to meet the usual suspects, Prince Rian, his royal consort: Cuinn, and their fae-at-arms (for want of a better word) and more twist to this whole Realm/Human world tale. Part of that clued in what would come next in the following books. At least that's how I figured this series so far.

After worrying themselves (well, Fiachra and Peri the most, really) crazy of how to go about swapping Fiachra's real body, it's almost anticlimactic the way it went down - though what followed was certainly interesting (not as intense as the previous encounters, but still).

What I loved about this series was how it tried to stay sensible in not trying to solve everything all-in-one, like what befell on the recurring characters here. Personally I thought they served as a sort of "promise" of more to come in the series.

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Also, this review originally appeared on Hot Stuff for Cool People.

It’s not really a secret that I love this series. It’s sweet, it’s fun, the writing is really solid. And this book, the sixth in the series, definitely has all those things. The book starts with one of our main characters, Fiachra, a fae who’s ostracized because of his coloring and lineage. He slips into the human world, but ends up in a body that isn’t his, with no idea where his own is. Since he can’t do anything about it, though, he decides to just live in this body. He becomes a cop, and seventeen years later, while he’s working, he meets Peri, a human with a troubled past. There’s an instant connection between the two. But before they can really start a relationship, the other fey and human SoulShares from the previous books realize that the body Fiachra is in is an important one, and that it needs to go back where it came from.

So, first, I should say, I loved this book. I’m in a bit of a book slump- I’m not interested in anything, I keep picking stuff up and putting it down- but this hooked me right away and I basically devoured it. There’s something really, uh, magical about this series. It seems like it shouldn’t be good- there tend to be a lot of plot holes, consistency issues, tons and tons of insta-love- but it is REALLY good. I can’t get enough of it. There are a couple books in the middle that I missed, and as badly as I want to read them, I feel like I should ration them for the times when I want to read something that I know will just make me feel good. That’s what these books do. They’re awesome. And this one was no exception.

However, I did feel that, for me, so far, it was the weakest of the series. There were a couple reasons for this.

The first was that we were presented with these two very interesting main characters, but they almost get pushed to the side in favor of exciting plot and the thoughts and goings-ons of all the other characters. I really enjoy the excitement of the plot, but I wish it was more tied into Fiachra and Peri and not just kind of revolving next to them and occasionally drawing them in. Likewise, I love seeing the characters from past books, but I wanted to get to know Fiachra and Peri. It’s their book. If the author wanted to write more about the other couples, perhaps she shouldn’t have introduced these two new characters, but continued the story of the other couples. As it was, by the time Fiachra and Peri were falling in love, it seemed like their entire romance was dependent on their SoulShare. Why were they in love? SoulShare. Why did they like each other at all? SoulShare. Why the attraction? SoulShare. And while I feel you can float a lot of that past readers, I wanted some more substance, something, even just more time spent in the same room, between these two. But that time was spent talking about the other characters in the book instead, so the romance, for me, wasn’t as exciting as it could have been.

In the same vein, I felt, as I felt in the last book, that too much time was spent in the mind of the series’ villain, the Marfach, and its host, Janek. The thing is, both the Marfach and Janek are wholly evil- there’s very little depth to these characters, they’re just The Bad Guys. So spending time in their minds is… boring. I already know they’re bad, and I don’t care what happens to them, so I don’t want to spend pages and pages reading about their thoughts. If they had more depth to them, yes, I would. And I do understand the need to outline their plans. But I think it could have been done in shorter bursts.

Not only that, but the Marfach is very… offensive. The scenes with this monster are crude and gory and just awful. Again, I understand the need for some of that. But it’s over the top and, I felt, sometimes expounded upon more for titillation than for plot. And it’s very jarring, to be reading all this sweet and lovey-dovey stuff, and then have this giant section of HORROR AND GORE. It’s weird and uncomfortable.

I did really enjoy that, in this book, the SoulShare bond is discussed a little bit more than, ‘It’s there, that’s why I love you.’ It was discussed very briefly, but this has always been something within the series that I felt I needed a bit more explanation on, and, so far, from what I’ve read, I hadn’t gotten it. So I was pleased to see that. (I mean, sharing a soul and falling in love with that person seems a bit narcissistic, doesn’t it? It was nice to see the few sentences that hinted at a deeper connection.)

On the other hand, it made me uncomfortable when Fiachra and Peri had sex while Fiachra was still in the body he had accidentally stolen. It wasn’t his body. It was someone else’s. So, basically, they’re violating this body without consent. And while the guy who’s body it was didn’t seem to mind, he was never actually asked, either. Maybe it was because he was fae and the fae are, in this series, supposed to be kind of sex maniacs, so it wasn’t supposed to bother us? But I wished it had at least been considered.

And, to round out my bout of nitpicking, I found the end to be incredibly abrupt. Like, I actually wondered if there was something wrong with my copy of the book, it ended so suddenly. (I’m pretty sure there wasn’t, though.)

However, I will stress again that I enjoyed this thoroughly. My nitpicking is because I love this series and I think it’s fantastic, and I want it to be as awesome as possible. The dialogue is great, the characters are interesting, the plots are fun, and there’s just so much sweetness and love in here that it would be impossible to dislike this. These books are the ultimate comfort reads. I can’t wait for the next one.

Six Reasons why you should read the Sixth book of the SoulShares series:

1. Because there is another Fae/Human couple and you are dying to meet them. On top of that Rory Ni Coileain plays a hidden trump card and there is something surprising and new about the Fae part of it.

2. Because you get to meet everybody from the previous SoulShare's series. I'm sure you have a favorite among them who you want to read more about. (Mine's kind of robbed of one of his most charming traits here but it didn't mar my enjoyment).

3. Because you like the Fae language (oh yes, come on, you do!) and all the talk about the nexus and the ley lines, the Realm and all the magick stuff. By the way, it's quite a lot in this one and at times I had some difficulty keeping up with and imagining what exactly was going on. It was at times closer to high fantasy than romance.

4. The back stories of Peri and Fiachra. Definitely intriguing, I would have been happy to read more about them. Their present story a.k.a the way they discovered each other and get engulfed by their love is great.

5. Because you want to see the next battle between the Fae and the Marfach. You won't be disappointed, it is spectacular as always.

6. Because...you can't help it. Yeah, I don't even need to tell you that. If you've read the first five books there is no way you'd miss the sixth.

This title was originally reviewed for Prism Book Alliance®

If you have been following Rory Ni Coileain’s SoulShare series, then you are probably as excited for Mantled in Mist as I was. If you haven’t yet picked up this fabulous series, you really should. You can see my review for the first 5 installments here. It is definitely a series and should be read in order. I also recommend re-reading at least book 5, Blowing Smoke, before picking up Mantled in Mist just to refresh your memory on where we are in our Fae’s fight against the Marfach. No to mention that all the couples we have met so far play a large role in this installment.

2016 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: Mantled in Mist by Rory Ni Coileain
Interesting and suspenseful but convoluted. The characters are interesting and varied, even though they are fairly typical of m/m romance. The witty dialogue and extensive use of Gaelic with translations is very well-done. For the SIXTH volume in a series about characters with paranormal powers and cultural traditions, this novel is quite comprehensible.

Yet another fantastic couple

Two more Soulshares. Some other Fae we have not met before. The evilest evil of all. Again, I am up late into the night because I cannot put it down. The continuing saga of the Pattern and the Fae who surround it has me caught in its spell and I am not looking for a way out.

From that review: "Mantled in the Mist by Rory Ni Coilean takes one of my favorite series and with this story made it even deeper and more fantastical. The author has added several new magical beings, ones we have never heard of before, to this tale of pain, loss and magic. We are now introduced to races that played major roles in the ancient war that sundered Earth from the other dimension the Fae now reside in. The price for one race? They became the subject of mockery, bullying, and deep outright cruelty by the purer fae on the other side for their racial bloodline and past history in the war. The price paid by the others on Earth? Well, I'll leave that for the story..."
