“In grade school she’d been given the nickname of ‘The Giraffe’ because she’d early on developed long, skinny legs and a long skinny neck to match … Giraffe had morphed into Gerri.” It had been the worst week of her life. She’d tripped on the ladder in her bookshop, twisting her ankle and bruising her cheek … and when the crush of her life, Rance had asked her to a fundraising gala at the spur of the moment as a means to appease his matchmaking mother, she’d donned the only dress in her closet, the pale pink bridesmaid dress that suited someone of voluptuous curves. The whole evening was a disaster, and her nerves and low self-image only added to the obvious fact she didn’t belong at any gala. In the ladies room, she’d over heard herself being ridiculed, so she ran out of the gala in tears and right into the arms of Des Quinlan, the man she’d cancelled dinner with when Rance had asked her to the gala. Later, that night she’d utter these words, “I wish I could go back to the moment before I fell and do the whole week over, knowing what I know now. And this time, I’ll do it right.” Much to Gerri’s surprise the next morning, her wish had come true. And as the events of the week unfolded, she managed to avoid the fall and surprisingly her week was taking a far different path. This time around she found herself wanting to get to know Des much better, and suddenly Rance seemed like a self-absorbed rich boy who always got his way. What was she going to do when Friday came around and Rance asked her to the gala? Would she cancel her date with Des, the man she couldn’t stop thinking about?

This was a charming lovestory about two people who feel like misfits. Gerri is a brainiac who loves books and though she has a poor self-image she is a bubbly positive person whom people like instantly. Des is a man emotionally scarred but finds himself opening up to Gerri. There’s something about her that seems to reach him. Later in the book Gerri explains how she feels to her best friend, “There’s something about Des, some broken part of him that calls to me … I have a broken part too, and when I’m with him it’s like the two broken parts fit together and become whole … and not broken anymore.” These two are soulmates and their journey was bumpy but well worth the struggle. This is the first book I’ve read by Ms. Pershing and I’m sure it will not be my last.
