About the author

Waki Yamato (大和和紀) is a Japanese mangaka.

She is most famous for Asakiyumemishi, her adaptation of the Tale of Genji.

At one time, she formed some sort of association with IGARASHI Yumiko and TADATSU Youko. These three were also instrumental in revitalizing shoujo manga, but unlike the Year 24 Group, they are known for more traditional stories of love and romance.

I picked up this manga while travelling in Japan. This is my first manga and I have to say that I love this manga. The storyline is beautifully drawn in b/w and it invokes a vivid imagination to the reader. The storyline details the complexity of relationships and what relationships were like in the emperor's court many many years ago e.g. jealousy, love, lust, loyalty, grievance, friendship, family, consequences etc.

This volume depicts the emotional development of Prince Genji who had become motherless and ends up falling in love with his stepmother Lady Kiritsubo. The storyline shows the turmoils that he goes through in search for the true meaning of love and the suppression of true love (for Lady Kiritsubo) by exploring numerous amorous relationships.

A few hundred pages of pictures or over a thousand pages of ancient, foreign text? Clearly, manga is the way to go. For now.

The pictures were wonderfully illustrated and the text was intuitive.

It was my first time ever reading the Tale of Genji and I greatly enjoyed it. It was a great introduction to beginners on this tale.
