MICK
I knew I shouldn't have come back here. Too many memories and not enough action.

How am I supposed to make a future when no one will let me forget the past?

But as soon as I see her, I know I have to hang around, just for a few more days. Even if she says no. She needs protection, and things are worse than she realizes.

RAINY
I have to get out of here. This town is going to drown me alive. I know that people need me, but keeping them afloat is dragging me to the bottom of the well.

The only way I'll feel safe is if I can start again, somewhere else. Nobody ever seems to make it out of here. Look at Mick - he was kicked out and he's still back in town.

Mick, that guy is nothing but trouble. Trouble and muscles.

Michael “Mick” O’hare just got discharged from the army. He’s back in his hometown and looking…well, to get laid. Renata “Rainy” Lupita Diaz waitresses at the local bar, but she really just wants to be a college student and get out of this town.

I have to admit, my first impression of Mick wasn’t the best. The opening scene paints him as a total horny douchebag. I really questioned if I could get on board with him as the ‘hero.’ But then the humor in the story starts to kick in and he actually started to grow on me.

“Well, what can you expect. All the ladies love me.” —Mick

Rainy, meanwhile, well she also threw me for a bit of a loop too when she was actually the one to suggest the hook up and then proceeded to drop her shorts at the bar. The plan is to never see each other again. Of course it doesn’t go that way.

“Sometimes you discover your latest one-night stand naked in your kitchen. It happens.” —Rainy

Turns out Mick’s dad takes in foster kids and low and behold Rainy happened to be one of them in the years that Mick has been away. Now not only is he temporarily living with her, he’s also forced to work with her. Oh and there’s a whole lot of nefarious dealings going on with the businesses in town.

“It is like a never ending train wreck in slow motion. All I have to do is get the fuck off, step away from the train wreck.” —Rainy

Imagine my surprise when before this very quote, I shook my head and thought, “these characters and this plot are a bit of a train wreck!”—you know when you really shouldn’t watch but you can’t take your eyes off it. Well that’s how it was as I kept tapping pages, glued to my kindle screen, occasionally my mouth gaping open. And since the characters thought that, and I thought that, well I guess we were all on the same page so…party on!

“Mick jogs down the driveway, still shirtless but now wearing a pair of Army-issue sweatpants. I can see his donkey cock flopping back and forth under the fabric as he jogs.” —Rainy

Yes, back to Mick and the train wreck. He supposedly smells (Rainy’s words, not mine. At first I thought in a bad way, but later I began to amend that interpretation) and he’s well endowed (there was no confusion about that). Donkey cock, horse cock, ferret, baby’s arm…all these very visual descriptions of Mick’s third leg and you can see why it was a little hard to put down. (Take the pun if you want—go ahead, it’s probably fitting.)

Anyways, there’s a bit of suspense about what’s all really going down with Mick’s old cronies and the workings of the bar. There are quite a few supporting characters, and I’ll admit I was a little confused on the dynamics at times. There are also some grammatical and continuity issues that another proofing would clean up just fine or have been corrected in the final copy.

But the banter between Mick and Rainy was the most entertaining and I found myself rooting for them. Rainy is a strong female character and she held her own well with Mick, at times even getting the upper hand. Deep down Mick does have some integrity and the pair are hot together. With that being said, I actually wish the story was longer. Told via Mick and Rainy’s alternating first person POV, the ending comes up rather abruptly and I felt like there was so much going on that there was definitely more story to be told. Plus, I really wanted to read more about Mick and Rainy!
So if you’re in the mood for a shorter, fun and sexy read, Soldier is one to check out.

spoilers!

2.75 stars. hmm well this one was just ok. I was confused with it at times. it was kinda of a train wreck in sorts. but i did enjoy some of the humor. I didn't care for the hero too much at first but he grew on me:) herione I thought was a strong gal who held her own. I was waiting for something big to happen with all the little suspense we were getting and it just fell flat. nothing really happened and everyone was happy. but what about lizzie?lol well I did like the epilogue .lol

safety: hmmm I would say safe with exception. my safety gang friends just stay away. I don't think you would care too much about this one. Hero definitely got around before. not too much about his past is mentioned. only what he says. herione isn't a virgin but nothing is said about her past. beginning of book hero walks in to bar wanting to get laid. he sees herione Friend and wants to bang her. he doesn't know anyone yet. hasn't met herione. nothing happens because herione stops it. but the intent was there. later that night him and herione have sex.

I was asked to read Soldier: A Military Bad Boy Romance for an honest review. The author sent me a form to get a free copy, but since it was on Kindle Unlimited, I already grabbed one.

To me, a bad boy romance has a guy that’s maybe is a biker, or a drug dealer, anything other than “good guy,” yet he will protect his woman, and fight for her like a feral beast. That’s sexy! What we got with Soldier is a womanizing - douche bag – jackass, with a lack of basic hygiene skills. How is that either a turn on, or sexy? The only thing Mick has going for him is the anaconda in his pants.

They plot line is just weird; with the mob type foster family, Pops, and the bar, it just didn’t flow very smoothly. The author came back and added a chapter after she received reviews on the abrupt ending. With that change; and the book not just ending out of nowhere my rating does increase, but not much. I did, for the most part, like the female lead in the story, Rainy, but Mick, no, he was crass and disgusting.

Unfortunately; Soldier is getting 2 stars from me, if Mick’s personality was better, the story would have been better....Sara

I’ll start with a thank you to the author for sending me a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.

Soldier is an interesting enough tale, although it failed to truly pull me in as I had been hoping for. I wanted more story, if I’m honest, instead of the romantic aspects (read ‘romantic aspects’ as ‘bedroom activities’). There was such potential for things to explode, such potential for intriguing events, yet the sexual tension was the entire focus of the story. Don’t get me wrong, I adore sexual tension. I simply like more in my stories than that one aspect.

Flicking between the two points of view, the story unfolds quickly. In all honesty, there were points when I wasn’t overjoyed with the double perspective. Aspects would be overlapped, simply so that we were knowing what was going on in both of their minds. There is nothing wrong with this, it simply made it seem like an online roleplay. As much fun as such things are, I find it distracts somewhat when reading a book. I wanted things to be moving forwards at all times, especially with how it is such a short story, yet such did not always happen when we were hearing about conquests from both perspectives.

All in all, it was an okay read but it did not scream out to me in any significant way. Perhaps if it had been longer, more details added to the story, I would have enjoyed it more – as it stands, it was simply an enjoyable quick read to pass the time with.

Loved the chemistry between Mick and Rainey. There was , at least, at first huge animosity between the two because they realized they were step siblings . Then the realization came there was some serious chemistry.
Mick came home on leave to visit his father and runs into his new step sister and other siblings. He realizes there is more going on since he had last been home and he needs to get to the bottom of what’s going on, especially since it involves his new “sister”. Mick is at first this man whore who likes women and get off but when he meets Rainy , his new step sister-whom he didn’t know at first was his step sister. Mick finds there is something about his feisty step sister that drives him all over crazy hot for her. Oh the chemistry between the two is sooo good. I love how Rainy is trying to be all strong to help her friend out and end up getting away to lead her own life. With Mick around , he disrupts her plans and makes her want things she shouldn’t want. There are some twists and a big turn at the end. Love how the story ended up. This solider will make you want this HEA all day, every day.

My rating: 4.6 stars ****

**Revised review**

I was really looking forward to my first read from this author. I love reading about bad boys and see how they mature into the men they are meant to be. I feel let down with this book.

It starts out with a cocky (and not in a good way) 22 year old soldier coming home after four years in the Army. Mick expects a warm welcome only to discover he doesn't see anyone from his old life. He has needs that have been long denied and he's determined to have fulfilled on his first night back in town. While he gets what he wants, it's just not from who he thought it would be. Rainy is 19 and working at a bar that her foster father "owns". She wants out of town and out of the life one of her foster brothers is trying to build. While the banter and chemistry between Rainy and Mick is there, and the maturity is there to a certain level, I just was not impressed. There is one thing said for being an arrogant alpha and just being an arrogant prick. Mick can't really see what has happened in his absence until it is pointed out to him. There is a catalyst later in the story where it seems like he's going to take matters into his own hands--and I'm excited to see the drama unfold with how things are going to go down.

**Start of REVISED review**

The original version of the book went from the last paragraph I discussed straight to the epilogue with no clue how anything got solved. The author went back and added the last chapter back into the book. She stated she felt it was not necessary, but after similar review, realized it was. While I do believe something extra chapter was necessary, the last chapter was still a let down to me. I still just can't imagine all of that happening in the book, and things just ending the way they did. You get your HEA in the epilogue, but for me the book still lackluster in the end.

Mick is a cocky S.O.B. He can walk into a room and just assume he’s the hottest thing in it and that anyone would be lucky for him to let him get his rocks off on them, in them…it wouldn’t matter to him. His arrogance is what will get his ass handed to him by Rainy. Nothing like watching an over-confident jackass fall.

He is a foul mouthed, obnoxious alpha man. If you don’t like your leading man to have a lot of edge then I wouldn’t read this, but if you like the bad boys then Mick is your man.

“Seriously, she leans over! I can see the light blue crotch of those little cotton panties she’s wearing! What the fuck is she trying to do to me?”

Rainy wants out of the small town her foster family basically runs. She has bigger dreams than it allows and only days left to make her move. Mick walks in and turns her life completely upside down. Turns out he’s a little handy to have around though.

Soldier is about a man coming back to a home that’s not his home anymore and finding more than he bargained for. It’s about righting wrongs and understanding things previously misinterpreted.

The writing was okay, but between the last chapter and the epilogue it felt as if something was missing, as if not all the loose ends had been tied up before jumping to the future. It was more like certain decisions, although not implemented, just automatically meant they were to be.

My Favorite Moment: I loved how Rainy played pool. That girl knows how to get what she wants.

“Play for what, exactly?”

“For my ass, of course.”

He licks his lips.

“Now you’re talking, princess.”

“No… Wait, not my actual ass. Okay? This is off limits. I mean my figurative ass.”

This story isn't for the faint of heart. I have to say that this is the first time I have ever read anything from this particular author but I will definitely read from her again. Mick and Rainey have a connection from the start little do they know just how much their lives are going to intertwine throughout the story. Mick has just gotten home from being in the military and is expecting to take over the bar that was supposed to be his before he went into the military. Rainey is running the bar that Mick believes will be his. Though this is where you first meet the couple, it won't be the last time they run into each other before they really start to see where the relationship is going to go. Rainey and Mick are definitely not your typical couple and this is not your typical military romance. Mick while he is an alpha didn’t have your typical upbringing and Rainey was in and out of foster homes. Mick was made to go into the military and while for a time he loathes his father for making him do his stint in the military, he will finally realize just how good it was for him. As for Rainey, she isn't too sure where her life will lead her in the very beginning of the book, but soon realizes that her life is in her own hands not that of someone else. They work together and somewhat against each other in this book until the end where they realize that they are meant to be together and that they will do anything and everything in their power to make that happen. Ms. Sweet did a really great job on this book and I definitely cannot wait to read more from her. So if you are looking for an angst filled read please take the time to check this book out.

3 Stars

This review is tough! I really liked this book.... It was at least 4 stars.... Right up to the end. That's where I said "Wait! What?!?" and then began going back and trying to find what I missed.
When Mick comes home from deployment, he immediately heads to his family's bar. He's surprised at the new clientele and is eager to find a girl to help relieve his "tension" from being deployed for so long. He thinks he's found the perfect match in Lizzie but is stopped by bartender, Rainey, before he can seal the deal.
Rainey has a plan, help Lizzie by the bar from her ex, Georgio, and the man get out and go to college. What she doesn't plan on is Mick coming in and giving her an incredible night with no strings attached. A few days later she is stunned to find him in her family's kitchen. Mick isn't just some soldier passing through, he's the son of her foster father.
Mick is hurt that his father promised the bar he thought was going to be his to another person. He's even more shocked that his foster brother Georgio seems to be running everything in town. When Georgio confides in Mick that he has other plans for Rainey that don't include college, Mick decides he needs to help Rainey out.

This plot was really great and kept me turning the page, dying to find out what would happen next. But sadly it really just came to a screeching halt and was very anticlimactic. I realize that this book is erotica and maybe some people don't care about the plot as much in this genre... But I really wanted more out of this book!

SOLDIER: A Military Bad Boy Romance by Maggie Sweet was the first book I have read by this author and in some parts it was I found it somewhat tedious. It's not a long story - quite the opposite at only 169 pages. I liked Mick, the son returning home after 4 years in the Military, only to find that much has changed. He had always expected to take over running the family Bar but while he was off serving his country, his father decided it was going to be somebody else who would not just run the bar, but purchase it as well! He didn't seem put out at this idea, he's actually a kind of laid-back kind of guy who just goes with the flow. He's actually not sure that he should have stayed in the forces as a trainer. The characters are many, all with very specific purpose in the story and it was an easy read. I was satisfied with the ending, but I didn't feel any real attachment to any of the characters. I'll read another Book by this author, just to see if it's her style of writing that didn't inspire me or if it was really just the story. Not a waste of time, but not great either.

*ARC received in return for an honest review* *3.5 stars*
This book hooked me right off the bat with Mick's kind of amusing bad boy inner monologue as he checks out all the women in the bar at the beginning of the story. Rainy is tough as nails and holds her own against Mick. Lots of chemistry there and some steamy sex. It was a little challenging figuring out the dynamics of all the players but I was really into the story. Who is Giorgio and how did he come to be running everything when Pops seems to be the owner? What is his relationship to Rainy and Lizzie? What happened between Mick and Pops? Finally we are getting answers! The book was on the way to being a 5 star rating, but then we abruptly jump to the epilogue. I'm not sure what happened there but I feel like a huge chunk of the story is missing. Aside from that, I do like the author's writing style and would definitely be interested in reading more of her work.

****update review****

I got the updated version with the final chapter that was missing. Again the story line was good and I thought things may get intense but they didn't. Things just went a different direction. Not the intense story that I was hoping for. I would give this a 3.5 stars as the ending still did not do it for me.

****received an ARC for a honest review****

This sounded like a really good story. It had a lot of good things going for it. The plot twist that was starting to happen was sounding really good. I was really looking forward to see how that all played out. To see how Mick was going to handle things, to see how Rainy was going to deal with not leaving. But it went straight to the epilogue and the HEA. You have no clue how they got there and what happened. It was like the author just didn't want to finish the story.

"Not if you were the last camo turkey in the world. Not if you were the last wannabe Power Ranger in the universe, sparkly cape and all.". Rainy is feisty and she isn't afraid to tell off the soldier that came into the bar that night. If she only knew who he was she might have made a diferent choice. Not that she regrets any of it, nor should she, that kind of sex is the kind we all look forward to. He certainly doesn't, in fact he finds that he wants more. But first, there is the little problem of straightening things out with the family. "Fat and happy, that's the line that keeps going through my head.". Great story, I couldn't put it down, just had to keep reading to see what Mick would do next or what Rainy would do, exciting! Enjoy! I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Steaming hot and straight out of the army!

This book had a lot of great things going on with it. I really liked the soldier coming home to find out thing have changed and he needs to stick around and fix them. Rainey is a tough girl who needed a strong man to help show her she can do everything she wants and that's what Mick did for her. Now the part that kept this from a 5 star was the fact it was all fast paced, a little to fast and when you finally got to the good stuff the story ended. I like that she added the last chapter as that definitely added to the story in a good way. She wrote some great sexy scenes as well as emotional ones.

A great HEA book from Maggie Sweet

I recieved this ebook from the Author in exchange for an honest review so here goes

Wow where to start this was the first Maggie Sweet book that I had read so I wasn't sure what it would be like other than what I had read in it's blurb, but in is a really good book and I look forward to reading more from Maggie Sweet

Pops, Mick and Rainy are such good characters and the story just seems to flow you get to witness the hopes and problems along with the main characters

The epilogue at the end was a nice surprise as it gives you a glance at what has happened to the characters that you have been traveling along with in the story

What can go wrong when you return from being away form home for four years. Things can't be that bad, right? Things aren't really what you thought, back then or even now. When push comes to shove a few decisions have to be made personally as well as what is best for the old man before he finds out.
Really cute story. I really adored this book. Good characters, good plot and well written.

This was a different kind of story It did not have anything to do with a soldier except for the fact that the main character was just discharged. Mick comes home from his time in the service and all he wants to do is have sex as many times as possible every day. Then he meets the one that will tame him. Micks father has lots of foster children, whom he has set up in many of his businesses. This is a good story, although different. I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.

As always, this author doesn't disappoint! The story, told from Mick & Rainy's POV's, held my attention from the beginning to the end! Between their chemistry & everything going on around them; other characters, plots, past histories, present issues, and what the future holds! Can't wait to read what Maggie comes out with next!

Mick just home from the Army, well discharged and is looking to let off some sexual steam, when he notices Renata Renata is a college student, working at a bar trying to survive til she can get out of this town. These two are like fire and ice. what should be just one night might not be enough.

Mick and Rainy are a roller coaster of emotions and tension. You never know what is going to happen between them next. Just when you start to like them one does or says something and the roller coaster ride is off again. Hang for a wild ride. One that is worth the ride.
