About the author

He is one of the foremost authority on scholarship of Dravidian movement.Prof. Pandian’s book, “The Image Trap - M G Ramachandran in Films and Politics,” on the Tamilian superstar and his tryst with politics is also considered one of leading authorities on this subject.He was earlier an Associate Professor in the Madras Institute of Development Studies, Chennai.His publications in the best reputed academic publications were many and his research interests were Nationalism, Caste, Tamil cinema and Popular Culture, among others. He completed his Ph.D in Madras University in 1987.

Prof. Pandian has been writing for national newspapers and the 'Economic and Political Weekly' for several years and known for his incisive articles on Tamil Nadu and Dravidian politics in particular.

தமிழ்நாட்டை பொறுத்தவரை பொதுவாகவே சினிமா நடிகர்கள் அரசியல் பிரவேசம் புகுவது வழக்கமாக நடக்கும் நிகழ்வு தான். எம்ஜிஆர், 'சிவாஜி' கணேசன் தொடங்கி சரத்குமார், கருணாஸ் வரை சினிமா பிம்பத்தை வைத்து அரசியலுக்கு வந்தவர்கள் ஏராளம். ஆனால் முன்பிருந்ததை போல் இப்போது அவர்களின் பிம்பம் மக்களிடையே பெரிய அளவில் எடுபடுவதில்லை, அதற்கு முக்கிய காரணம் அரசியல் மற்றும் சினிமாக்களுக்கு இடையே இருக்கும் விரிசல் அதிகரித்து  கொண்டே இருப்பது தான். மேலும் முன்பிருந்ததை போல் பொழுதுபோக்கு என்பது குறுகலாக இல்லை, இப்போது பொழுதுபோக்குக்கு பல வகைகளில் வர தொடங்கிவிட்டன, சினிமா அதில் ஒரு அங்கம். 


சினிமா நடிகர் என்ற பிம்பத்தை வைத்து அரசியலில் பெரியளவிலான தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தியவர்களுள் முக்கியமானவர் எம்ஜிஆர் தான். அந்த பிம்பம் எப்படி கட்டமைக்கப்பட்டது? அது எளிய மக்களில்  தொடங்கி பல எலைட் மக்களின் வரவேற்பை பெற்றது எப்படி? சினிமாவிலும் நிஜத்திலும் அவர் ஒரே நபரா? அந்த பிம்பம் உருவாக காரணியாக இருந்த விசயங்கள் எவை? அவரின் சினிமா பிம்பம் தமிழ் கலாச்சார சூழலோடு எப்படி ஒன்றி போனது அதற்கு அவர் மேற்கொண்ட மெனக்கெடல்கள் என்னென்ன போன்றவை பற்றி எல்லாம் விரிவாக பேசுகிறது, ஆய்வறிஞர் MSS. Pandian அவர்கள் எழுதிய “Image Trap”. 


எம்ஜிஆரின் 11 ஆண்டு  ஆட்சி காலம் என்பது தமிழகத்தின் இருண்டகாலம் , அது எளிய மக்களின் வாக்குகளை பெற்று பணக்கார வர்க்கத்துக்கும் பெருமுதலாளிகளுக்கும் தொண்டாற்றியது என்று தான் இந்த புத்தகத்தை தொடங்குகிறார் நூல் ஆசிரியர். 


உண்மையிலேயே எம்ஜிஆர் அவ்வளவு நல்லவரா? மூடப்பட்ட மதுக்கடைகளை திறந்தவர், பணக்காரர்கள் மீதான நேரடி வரி குறைக்கப்பட்டு, ஏழைகள் மற்றும் நடுத்தர வர்க்க மக்கள் பாதிக்கும் வகையில் அத்தியாவசிய பொருட்கள் மீதான மறைமுக வரியை உயர்த்தியவர், மேலும் 1981ல்  CPI(ML) கட்சியை சேர்ந்த 15 நிராயுதபாணிகளை சுட்டு கொன்றவர்(அதில் 11 பேர் பட்டியல் வகுப்பை சேர்ந்தவர்கள் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.), அவர் ஆட்சி காலத்தில் தான் மாதம் 50 பேராவது குண்டர் சட்டத்தின் கீழ் தனிமனித காழ்ப்பின் காரணமாக தடுப்பு காவலில் வைக்கப்பட்டார்கள். சாராய ஆலைகளுக்கு கலால் வரி(Excise duty) விலக்கு அளிக்கப்பட்டது. திராவிட இயக்க கொள்கைகளான பகுத்தறிவு, மாநில சுயாட்சி, சுயமரியாதை போன்றவை எல்லாம் காற்றில் வீசப்பட்டு வெறும் ரசிக மனநிலை(Hero Worship) தொண்டர்களிடையே தலைதூக்கியது.


பிரிட்டிஷ் ஆட்சி காலத்திலிருந்தே தமிழர்களின் சினிமா மோகம் அதிகம் தான், சுதந்திர இந்தியாவில் அதிக திரையரங்குகளை கொண்ட மாநிலங்களில் ஆந்திராவுக்கு அடுத்த இடத்தில் தமிழ்நாடு தான் இருந்தது, மேலும் இங்கு நடந்த திராவிட இயக்க நடவடிக்கைகளால் திரை அரங்குகள் எல்லாம் அனைத்தும் மக்களும், சாதி-மத வேறுபாடின்றி தங்களின் வாங்கும் சக்திக்கேற்ப அமர்ந்து ரசிக்கும் வகையில் தான் இருந்தது. இங்கு நிறைய திரைஅரங்கங்கள் இருந்த காரணத்தால் டிக்கெட் விளையும் மலிவாக கிடைத்தது, அனைத்து தரப்பு மக்களாலும் அணுகும் வகையில் தான் சினிமா அமைந்தது. திராவிட இயக்கம் இதனை பயன்படுத்தி கொண்டு கொள்கை பிரச்சாரங்களை சினிமா, நாடகம், இலக்கியம் என அனைத்து தளங்களிலும் மேற்கொண்டது. 


தொடக்கத்தில் காங்கிரஸ் காரரான எம்ஜிஆர் 1953 இல் தான் திமுகவில் இணைகிறார், அவரின் திரைப்படங்கள் எல்லாம் கொள்கை பிரச்சார ஊடகமாக பயன்பட்டது. மக்களும் அதை வரவேற்றார்கள், இயக்கம் வளர்ந்தது - நடிகர்களும் வளர்ந்தார்கள். 


இந்த பிம்ப கட்டமைப்பில் ஏற்கனவே தமிழ் பண்பாட்டில் ஊறி போன சில பொது புத்தி(Common-sense) பழக்கவழக்கங்கள் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டது, 

1 . நீதிமானாக இருப்பது 

2 . கல்வியை முதன்மையாக கருதுவது 

3 . பெண்களை மதிப்பது போன்றவை எல்லாம் எளியமக்களிடையே(Subaltern) நல்ல வரவேற்பை பெற்றது, மேலும் அவரின் திரைப்படங்களில் வரும் எம்ஜிஆர் கதாபாத்திரம் தன்னை பெரும்பாலும் எளியவனாகவும், இந்த மூன்று பண்புகளை கொண்டவனாகவும், எளிய உடையிலும் காட்சி அளிப்பதால் மக்கள் எல்லாம் தங்களுக்குள் ஒருவனாக தான் எம்ஜிஆரை பார்த்தார்கள். பாடல்கள், வசனங்கள், சண்டை காட்சிகள் எல்லாம் எம்ஜிஆரின் தணிக்கைக்கு பிறகு தான் காட்சியாக வைக்கப்பட்டன. 


எளிய மக்களிடையே இருந்த  நாட்டுப்புற பாடல் மற்றும் கதையாடல்களில்  வரும் கதாபாத்திரங்களின் பெயர்களையும் அந்த கதாபாத்திரங்களின் பண்பான மானம்/வீரம்/அன்பு/தியாகம் போன்றவை  பல திரைப்படங்களில் காட்சியாக வைக்கப்பட்டன.  


பெண்கள் மத்தியில் வரவேற்பை பெற இவர் பயன்படுத்திய யுக்தி, கதையில் ஒன்றுக்கும் மேற்பட்ட நடிகைகள் இருப்பர், அவர்கள் எம்ஜிஆரை நினைத்து உருகி பாடல்கள் பாடுவார்கள், அனைத்து பெண்களையும் தாயாகவும், தங்கையாகவும் பாவித்து எடுக்கப்படும் காட்சிகளும் இருக்கும். மாடர்னாக உடை அணிந்திருந்தால் அவர்களை சேலை கட்ட சொல்வதும், கர்வம்மிக்க கதாபாத்திரங்களுக்கு பாடம் புகட்டி  திருந்தி வாழ சொல்வதுமான காட்சிகள் எல்லாம் பெரும்பான்மை மக்களிடம் வரவேற்பை பெற்றது. Boomer uncleகளுக்கு தலைவனாக புரட்சி நடிகர் இருந்துள்ளார். 


இவர் பேசும் பெண் விடுதலை எல்லாம் பெரும்பாலும் ஆணாதிக்கத்திற்கு உட்பட்ட பழமைவாத தன்மை கொண்டதாக தான் இருக்கும். ஆண்கள் மற்றும் பெண்கள் அனைத்து தரப்பினர் இடையேயும் நல்ல வரவேற்பை பெற்றது இவரின் திரைப்படங்கள். 


இவரின் திரை பிம்பம் தான் உண்மையானது என ரசிகர்கள் நம்ப தொடங்கினார்கள், 1972 இல் திமுகவில் இருந்து விலகிய எம்ஜிஆர், தனது   கட்சி அமைப்பை வலுப்படுத்த ரசிகர் மன்றங்களை பயன்படுத்தி கொண்டார். கொள்கை என்ன என்று கேட்டால் "அண்ணாயிசம்" என்று மழுப்பினார். மேலும் கட்சி தொண்டர்களை எல்லாம் கையில் பச்சை குத்த சொன்னார். ஹிட்லர் சொல்வதை எல்லாம் கேட்ட நாஜிகள் போல் இவர் சொல்வதை எல்லாம் கேட்க ஒரு கூட்டம் இருக்க தான் செய்தது. மேலும் அந்த சமயத்தில் நிலவிய பொருளாதார நெருக்கடியும், வேலைவாய்ப்பின்மையும் மக்களிடையே தங்களை காக்க ஒரு தேவ தூதன் வர மாட்டானா என்கிற ஏக்கம் என  எல்லாம் சேர்த்து ஒரு நடிகரை முதல்வராகியது. 


மதுக்கடைகளை திறக்கமாட்டேன் என தாய் மீது ஆணையிட்டு ஆட்சிக்கு வந்த எம்ஜிஆர் , மதுக்கடைகளை திறந்ததும் அவரின் தொண்டர்கள் எல்லாம் "அவர் செய்தல் சரியாக தான் இருக்கும்" என்னும் நிலைக்கு மாறிபோனார்கள். ஊழல் கீழ்மட்டத்தில் தலைவிரித்து ஆடியது, ஆனால் மக்கள் எம்ஜிஆர் வந்து காப்பாத்துவார் என்று தங்களை தாங்களே  சமாதான படுத்தி கொண்டார்கள். இப்படி அவரின் சினிமா பிம்பம் அவரை மூன்று முறை வெற்றி பெற வைத்து முதலமைச்சர் ஆக்கியது.  


அவரின் ரசிகர்களை பற்றி படிக்கும் போதெல்லாம் பாவமாக தான் இருக்கும், அவர் MR. ராதாவால் சுடப்பட்ட போது தீக்குளித்தவர்களும், கோவில் கட்டியவர்களும், தற்கொலை செய்து கொண்டவர்களும் ஏராளம். மேலும் 1980களில் அவர் மருத்துவமனையில் அனுமதித்திருந்த போது , தமிழகத்தில் கோவில்களின் எணிக்கை அதிகமானது, மூன்று முறை பிறந்து எமனை ஏமாற்றியவர் என்று அவரை ஒரு கடவுளாகவே பாவித்தார்கள். இதற்கு பண்பாட்டு ரீதியான காரணங்களும் இருக்கதான் செய்கிறது பொதுவாகவே தமிழ் மக்கள் சிறுதெய்வ வழிப்பாட்டில் ஆர்வம் கொண்டவர்கள் தங்க���ின் முன்னோர்களை சிலையாக்கி வழிபாடும் வழக்கம் இருந்து வந்தது, எம்ஜிஆர் அதை பயன்படுத்திக்கொண்டார் அல்லது தமிழ் சமூகம் அப்படி செய்து  ஏமாந்து போனது.   


அவரின் இறப்பை எல்லாம் தங்கள் வீட்டில் ஒருவரின் இழப்பாக நினைத்தார்கள், மறைவை அடுத்து வந்த படங்கள் எல்லாம் அவர் கடவுள் வடிவில் நம்முடன் தான் இருக்கிறார் என்கிற அளவிற்கு மிகப்படுத்தப்பட்டு எடுக்கப்பட்டது, இன்றும் அந்த எம்ஜிஆர் factor தேர்தல்களில் ஆதிக்கம் செலுத்தி தான் வருகிறது. ஒரு சர்க்கஸ் கம்பெனியின் நிறுவனர் கடவுளானார் அதை பார்த்து ரசித்த மக்கள் எல்லாம் கோமாளி ஆனார்கள் என்று தான் அவரின் 11  ஆண்டு கால ஆட்சியை வரலாறு பதிவு செய்யும். 


அவரின் தனிப்பட்ட வாழ்க்கையை பற்றி பேசினால் கொடூரங்களுக்கும், ஆபாசங்களையும் தவிர எதுவும் மிஞ்சாது. அவரின் சுயசரிதைகள் எல்லாம் விலைபோன எழுத்தாளர்களால் எழுதப்பட்டது. 


சினிமாவும்- அரசியலும் பிரிக்கமுடியாத துருவங்களாக தான் தமிழ்நாடு அரசியலில் இருந்து வந்தது, இப்போது நிலை மாறி இருந்தாலும் அதனால் நாம் இழந்தவை ஏராளம். முற்போக்கு சமுதாயம் என்று தம்பட்டம் அடித்துக்கொண்டாலும் நம்மை அறியாமலே ஏமாந்து போய்விடுகிறோம். 


ஜெயலலிதா செய்ததை விட எம்ஜிஆர் செய்தது தான் மிக பெரிய ஊழல், இவர் செய்தது கருத்தியல் ஊழல்(Ideological Corruption), மக்களின் மூளையை மழுங்கடித்து ஜாம்பிகள்(Zombies) போல் மக்களை அலையவிட்டது. மிகைப்படுத்தாமல் கூறவேண்டும் என்றால் மக்கள் தலையில் 11 வருடம் மிளகாய் அரைத்து 3 முறை சொகுசு வாழ்க்கையை அனுபவித்த பெருமை வாத்தியரையே சேரும். 


ஆய்வு சூழலில் திரு. MSS Pandian அவர்களது பங்கு அளப்பரியது அவர் விட்டு சென்ற பணியை நாம் தொடர்ந்து செய்வோம். 


வாய்ப்புள்ள நண்பர்கள் இந்த புத்தகத்தை அவசியம் வாசித்து அறிவு தெளிவு பெறவும், இன்னும் பல எம்ஜிஆர்கள் வரிசையில் காத்து கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள்.

எம்.ஜி.ஆர் என்னும் மனிதரின் அரசியல் மற்றும் திரைவாழ்க்கையில் அவர் மக்களிடத்தில் கட்டியமைத்த தன்னலம் பேணாதவர், எப்போதுமே மக்களுக்காக உழைப்பவர்,ஏழைகளின் தோழன் மற்றும் அதிகாரத்திற்கு எதிரானவர் போன்ற மாயைகளை எம்.எஸ்.எஸ்.பாண்டியன் ஆதாரங்கள் மூலம் அவரின் பிம்ப அரசியல் எவ்வாறு திட்டமிட்டு கட்டமைப்பு செய்யப்பட்டது என்று நிறுவுகிறார்.
1972 இல் தி.மு.கழகத்துடன் ஏற்பட்ட பிணக்கின் காரணமாக தோற்றுவிக்கப் பட்ட அண்ணா தி.மு.க ஆனது எவ்வாறு அரசியலில் கொள்கைகள் இல்லாமல் தமிழகத்தில் 10 வருடகால இருண்ட கால ஆட்சியை ஏழை மற்றும் நடுத்தர மக்களுக்கு வழங்கியது என்பனவற்றை தரவுகள் மூலம் விளக்குகிறார்.
குறிப்பாக பெண்களுக்கு ஏன் எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் மீது தீவிர பற்றுதல் உருவானதை உளவியல் ரீதியாகவும்,ஆனால் தன் திரைப்படங்களில் பெண் அடிமைத்தனத்தையே அடிநாதமாகவும்,புரட்சிகரமான பெண்கள் எப்பொழுதும் சமுதாயத்தின் பெரும் கேடு என்று உருவகம் செய்யப்பட்ட விதமும் விளக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

Interesting break down of the man MGR was and the image he projected of himself. Eerie how there are others trying to emulate his tactics, and how the same arguments come from the newer parties’ mouthpieces.

A very serious analysis of the phenomenon that was MGR. While unraveling the dynamics and the chemistry behind the rise of MGR from matinee idol to leader of masses and then a CM of TN, the details does not spare any one from the so called progressive forces in the state. From the iconic CN Annadurai, to the classic nemesis M Karunanidhi, all of the leaders who initially blew up his image and helped building that calculated image until they realized the beast they unleashed, too late in the game, are spared. The mechanics of how the image was built and the psychology behind that, which evolved over the time, honed to perfection by MGR himself consciously, is discussed thread bare to unravel the myth of MGR as a phenomenon. What is not touched upon in detail is his brand of politics, his personal control and influence in Tamil cinema, his sycophancy etc. In that sense the book stays true to its stated objective of unravelling the image building exercise and how it bonded the poor in the state with a tight chain of autocracy ironically while professing to represent the same people.

An excellent book on mgr and how he became a phenomenon in Tamil Nadu politics. How his influence is felt even now. The author makes sound arguments with a large number of facts that elevate this book to new heights. The book also provides an excellent analysis of why mgr was famous among the poor,rural,illiterate class of people.
Everybody knows mgr’s politics and achievements. This book provides an excellent analysis on the other side (cons). Starting with police brutality , repression of press, corruption, and lack of structural reforms in the state and excessive political populism that has defined tamilnadu’s politics to this day.
The author backs his points with hard hitting facts.
A must book for people who want to understand tamilnadu’s politics and mgr the shrewd politician

What is this work about?

Wonderful, accessible biography of M.G.R.

His full name, Maruthur Gopalan Ramachandran.

He was Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu during 70’s and 80’s.

He is figure head of Tamil Political Party, ADMK, along with now late, Jayalalithaa.

This work is well-written, easy to understand and follow.

The author has vast number of cited sources for his work.

What is the meat of the work?

In this Work, the author narrates, MGR’s support was from lower strata of society.

He says, MGR’s regime benefited mostly the elite, educated elite, business leaders, political elite, landed aristocrats.

Meanwhile, M.G.R drew his support from the poor, down-trodden.

He says, the political party - AIADMK, was the party of poor.

Here is a quote from M.G.R:

I am not a scholar who has mastered Economics.

But I have suffered hunger and poverty in my life.

I have climbed thousands of steps and sought employment and was tired of the statement ‘no job.’ I know the suffering of my mother who could not give us a handful of rice when we returned from school.

Till my last breath, I will work [for the people] that no mother in Tamil Nadu suffer the way my mother did. MGR—Born poor—Brought up by the poor—Lives for the poor—The child of our home.


What is my own thoughts?

I am from Tamil Nadu.

I am interested in Tamil People. This drew me to learn more about Political history of Tamil Nadu.

I’d say, A good government is one, which provides basic access of healthcare, education, livelihood , improve quality of life for all strata of society.

It seems, pitting classes against each other, eg: Rich vs Poor, Land-owners vs renters, business owners vs employees. This might create resentment, distrust, tear unity in social fabric of society.

Perhaps, I’d finish this review saying, the question ought to be:

-What does a healthy, flourishing society look like?
-How do all socio-economic strata of society, flourish together for betterment of Tamil People to bring them on Global stage?

The book scrutinizes MGR's not-so-subtle agendas in all of his movies, more than that of his poltical tenure and is a great read for anyone unaware of how he went about building such a strong camaraderie with his fans and followers, indeed, by attempting to blend his on-screen image with his real life persona.

Also, it was fascinating to read about how his movies were among the first ones to portray women with an apparent freedom of choice in terms of dressing, fierce personality and transgressing sexual and caste norms for marriage. The reason it's "apparent" is because the role of MGR in these movies is automatically to "tame" these women and make them realize their traditional roots and somehow contain their choices within the socially acceptable patriarchal notions. It is not surprising that he has done the same with the portrayal of the subaltern classes and has essentially diluted the aggressiveness of the heroes in ballads and folklores to suit his own agendas, all the while being praised for representing them in cinema.

The connection between cinema and politics has been inseparable throughout the history of Tamil Nadu politics. Dravidian parties used mediums of entertainment like plays, cinema, and songs as a propaganda vehicle for their political goals. It was MGR who made an immense success in this phenomenon. His unprecedented success as a filmstar politician was unmatched till this date. The book explains in detail how MGR, as a film star, was able to create a cinematic image as a justice-dispensing hero, which helped him as a politician. It shows how the line seperating cinema and real life was blurred by MGR and how he got immense support from the subaltern class, though his 10-year rule had made their lives miserable.

தமிழகத்தின் மிகப்பெரும் கட்சியாக உருவெடுத்திருக்கும் அஇஅதிமுக-வினை நிறுவிய எம்.ஜி.ஆர். அவர்களைப் பற்றிய நூலே இது. The Image Trap: M G Ramachandran in Flims and Politics என்ற ஆங்கில நூலினைத் தமிழில் பூ.கொ. சரவணன் மொழிபெயர்த்துள்ளார்.

இந்நூலின் முற்பகுதி எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் சினிமா வாழ்க்கையையும், அதன்மூலம் மக்களின் மனங்களில் அவர் எவ்வாறு பதிவானார் என்பதையும் காட்டுகிறது. பிற்பகுதி அவரின் அரசியல் பயணத்தையும், அதிகார வர்க்கத்தின் தலைமையாக இருந்தும், மக்களின் பொதுபுத்தியில் ஏழைகளின் பங்காளனாக அவர் எவ்வாறு பரிணமித்தார் என்ற செய்தியும் விரிவாகப் பேசப்பட்டுள்ளது.

திரையில் இவரின் பங்களிப்பை ஒரு ஆயுதமாகப் பயன்படுத்திய திமுக அதனை வைத்தே தன்னுடைய தேர்தல் பணிகளைக் கவனிக்கத் தொடங்கியது. இவருக்காகவே சில கதைகள் எழுதப்பட்டன. இவருடைய பல்வேறு படங்களில் திமுக-வினுடைய கொடியும், சின்னமும் காட்டப்பட்டன. அண்ணாவின் மறைவிற்குப் பிறகு, அஇஅதிமுக என்ற கட்சியைத் தொடங்கி ஆட்சியைப் பிடித்ததும் திரைத்துறையின் மூலமே என்பது நினைவுகூரத்தக்கது. அரசின் எந்தவொரு திட்டமும் தொடங்கும்போது, அது ஏன் தொடங்கப்பட இருக்கிறது என்பதைத் தன்னுடைய வாழ்க்கையில் நடந்த நிகழ்வுகள் மூலம் மக்களிடம் தெரிவிப்பது அவருடைய நடைமுறையாக இருந்தது (காட்டு: சத்துணவுத் திட்டம்).

தமிழக மக்களின் மனநிலையையும், அதனைப் பயன்துய்த்துக் கொண்ட கதை நாயகனையும் பற்றிய விளக்க நூலாகவே இது அமைகிறது. இறுதியாக, “எம்.ஜி.ஆர். நாற்பது ஆண்டுகாலம் தமிழ்சினிமாவை ஆண்டார். பத்து ஆண்டுகாலம் தமிழக முதலமைச்சராக நடித்தார்” என்று பாரதி கிருஷ்ணகுமார் பேசியதாகப் பதிவு உள்ளது. அது எவ்வளவு உண்மை என்பது இந்நூலினைப் படித்தால் உணர்ந்துகொள்ள முடியும். இதன்மூலம் திரைப்பிம்பம் கட்டுடைக்கப்படும் என்பது நிதர்சனம்.

Extraordinary. Growing up in the late 90's Tamil Nadu I used to wonder why some people are so enamored with MGR, when his movies in general sucked, was quite regressive and totally unreal/unconvincing. MSS Pandian gives a clear answer why. He begins by describing how government of MGR failed the subaltern classes on all counts, promoting a police state restricting liberty while enriching his associates/landed elites. However, MGR never lost the support of the subaltern classes when in fact they were in the receiving end of his policies. His popularity actually rose among them. The author address the core question of the book, how is it possible that the subaltern classes sustained a politics that benefited the elite. As answer, Pandian turns to Gramsci's concept of common sense delineating how MGR successfully embedded himself in the subaltern consciousness merging his film and real-life personalities. The songs, dialogues, characters, stunts, heroine(s) where all used to build his film personality, which for his fans was indistinguishable from the real-life politician. He ends by noting even among the devoted followers of MGR, given the dichotomy of the common sense, there exists seeds of progressiveness and dissent, and this should be used to build an alternative style of politics.

The only gripe I have with the book is the lack of perspective on success of MGR hypnosis. If one looks at the Appendix (at the AIADMK electoral performance) one does see that AIADMK mostly polled around 30-40 % but always had absolute majority in assembly. Hence, the MGR phenomena is as much due to the way democracy is organized in India as on the way MGR's image was constructed in the subaltern consciousness.

இந்நூலை வாசித்து முடித்தவுடன் தங்களின் கதாநாயகன் அரசியல்வாதியாக வந்தால் நம்மை காப்பாற்றுவான் என்று நினைத்து கொண்டிருக்கும் பல கோடி ரசிகர்களின் நிலையை நினைத்து சிரிப்பு தான் வந்தது..

தமிழக அரசியல் சூழல் 1972க்கு பிறகு தரம் தாழ்ந்து போனதற்கு எம்.ஜி.ஆர் காரணமாக இருக்கலாம் என்ற சந்தேகங்களும் எழத்தான் செய்கிறது.

யாரெல்லாம் வாசிக்க வேண்டும் என்று கேட்டல் 2021 சட்டமன்ற தேர்தலுக்கு முன் தமிழ் மக்கள் அனைவரும் வாசித்தல், பலரின் சாயம் வெளுத்து போகும் .

பூ.கொ. சரவணன்அண்ணாவின் மிக நேர்த்தியான மொழிபெயர்ப்பு எந்த இடை நிற்றலும் இன்றி தொடர்ந்து வாசிக்கும் வகையில் அமைகிறது.எம்.எஸ்.எஸ் பாண்டியன் ஒரு மிக சிறந்த ஆய்வறிஞர் என்பது அவரின் புத்தக குறிப்புகளின் மூலமே புலப்படும்.

"எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் 11 வருட ஆட்சிகாலம் சந்தேகமே இல்லாமல் தமிழகத்தின் சமகால வரலாற்றின் இருண்ட காலங்களில் ஒன்றாகும்" என்று சொன்னதற்கு அவர் கூறும் விளக்கம் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும் விதத்தில் தான் இருக்கிறது.

A very serious analysis of the phenomenon that was MGR. While unraveling the dynamics and the chemistry behind the rise of MGR from matinee idol to leader of masses and then a CM of TN, the details does not spare any one from the so called progressive forces in the state. From the iconic CN Annadurai, to the classic nemesis M Karunanidhi, all of the leaders who initially blew up his image and helped building that calculated image until they realized the beast they unleashed, too late in the game, are spared. The mechanics of how the image was built and the psychology behind that, which evolved over the time, honed to perfection by MGR himself consciously, is discussed thread bare to unravel the myth of MGR as a phenomenon. What is not touched upon in detail is his brand of politics, his personal control and influence in Tamil cinema, his sycophancy etc. In that sense the book stays true to its stated objective of unravelling the image building exercise and how it bonded the poor in the state with a tight chain of autocracy ironically while professing to represent the same people.

A great piece of research. People who call this work "seminal" aren't exaggerating when they say so. Pandian's Marxist critique aside, a closer look at how Tamil Nadu functioned under MGR, a better understand of the man was what he concentrated on.

The way cinema and politics in Tamil Nadu are closely intertwined is a common theme in almost all literature on the state. Pandian manages to do away with cliches, firstly by his writing, secondly by this deeper understanding he has of the polity. I found myself smiling whenever he didn't other the people of the state, but instead just presented them as they were.

A lucid analysis of how MGR, using the medium of cinema primarily, managed to successfully manufacture a false image of himself as a righteous man rising from a life of struggle and poverty to become a "saviour" of the oppressed.

The late Prof. MSS Pandian explains the reasons behind a major contradiction - though MGR found his biggest support from the poorest of the poor, his tenure as Chief Minister spelt doom for the same subaltern classes. Pandian employs Antonio Gramsci's theory of common sense to explain how MGR successfully manipulated some elements of the cultural presuppositions of the subaltern classes to achieve this.

A must-read for anyone interested in Tamil Nadu politics.

MGR அடைந்த உச்சம், பதவி, புகழ், அதிகாரம் அனைத்தையும் விட அழியா நினைவு. அதனால் தான் அவர் இவர்களுக்கு idol/target. இன்றும் அரசியல் சார்பற்ற ஆயிரக்கணக்கானோரின் இல்லத்திலோ, யாரோ ஒரு ஆட்டோக்காரரின் வண்டியிலோ, ஒரு தேநீர் கடை சுவற்றிலோ, சில வயதான தொழிலாளரின் சட்டைப் பையிலோ, சில முதியோரின் பைகளிலோ புகைப்படமாய் இருப்பார். மிகவும் கவனித்தால் கிராமத்தில் இருக்கும் எதோ ஒரு முதியவரின் கையில் பச்சை குத்தப்பட்டிருக்கும் உருவம் இவருடையது. இன்றும் அவர் பெயர் சொன்னால் ஆர்ப்பரிக்க கூட்டம் உள்ளது.

இத்தனைக்கும் காரணம் அன்னார் திரையில் கட்டியமைத்த பிம்பம் என்று கூறினால் பலருக்கு வியப்பாகத் தான் இருக்கும். எப்படி அங்குலம் அங்குலமாக அது கட்டியமைக்கப்பட்டது, எப்படி கல்வியறிவில்லா மக்கள் நிழலுக்கும் நிஜத்திற்கும் வித்தியாசம் உணராமல் அறியாமையில் திளைத்து தங்களுக்கான தண்டனையை மகிழ்ச்சியோடு வரமாகக் கொண்டாடினர் என்பதை மிகவும் நேர்த்தியாக, அலசி ஆராய்ந்து ஆய்வுக் கட்டுரையாக வழங்கியுள்ளார் MSS பாண்டியன் அவர்கள்.

"… the success story of MGR, which is at once the failure of a people…"

This was a thoroughly fascinating look into MGR’s cult of personality. The author explores how MGR’s image was carefully constructed, and why he commanded such a following.

My grandfather was in the DMK and then followed MGR to be part of the AMDK. I have grown up hearing a lot of the MGR mythology. However, these myths did not withstand the test of time. This was the primary reason why I was drawn to this book.

The author deconstructs the psyche, particularly of the subaltern classes, to explain the allure of MGR in films and by extension in politics. This analysis can also be applied to other contemporary leaders and their followers, both within and outside India. The examination of why the majority of MGR’s fans were women was also quite enlightening.

எம்.ஜூ.ஆர் இறப்பிற்கு பிறகு எம்.ஜி.ஆரை பற்றி கட்டப்பட்ட கட்டு கதைகள் மட்டும் ஆயிரத்திற்கு மேல் இருக்கும். எந்த ஒரு தலைவனுக்கு இல்லாத வண்ணம் உயிரையே இழக்க தயாராக இருக்கும் ஒரு தொண்டர் படையை ஒரு நடிகனால் எப்படி உருவாக்க முடிந்தது என்கிற கேள்வி உங்களுக்கு எழுமானால் அதற்கான பதிலை பிம்பசிறை கொடுக்கிறது.

புத்தக ஆரம்பத்தில் எம்.ஜூ.ஆரின் ஊழல் விவாகாரங்கள் குறித்து பேசப்படுகிறது. எம்.ஜூ.ஆரின் திட்டங்கள். இவையெல்லாம் தாண்டி எம்.ஜூ.ஆர் ஆட்சியில் காவல் வன்முறை அதிகமாக இருந்துள்ளது. லாக் அப் மரணங்கள் அதிகமாக நடந்துள்ளன. 1977 முதல் 1982 வரை லாக் ஆப்பில் இறந்தவர்கள் எண்ணிக்கை 300 ஐ தாண்டுகிறது. எம்.ஜூ.ஆரும் ஒரு ஊழல் அரசியல் வாதிதான் என்றாலும் அதை வெளிவர விடாமல் அவர் உருவாக்கிய பிம்பங்களே இப்போது வரை மக்களை சுற்றி வருகிறது.
எம்.ஜூ.ஆர் தனது திரைப்படங்களை கட்சியின் கொள்கைகளை பரப்புவதற்காக பயன்படுத்துகிறார். படத்தில் வரும் எந்த ஒரு காட்சியும் தன்னை தவறாக சித்திரித்துவிட கூடாது என்பதில் முழு கவனத்துடன் இருக்கிறார். இதற்காக கதையையே கூட மாற்ற அவர் தயங்குவதில்லை.
எப்படி எம்.ஜூ. ஆர் கனவுலகில் இருந்து நிஜ உலகில் ஹீரோவாகிறார்.
அதிகப்பட்சம் எம்.ஜூ.ஆர் தனது திரைப்படங்களில் பாமர மக்களாக இருக்கிறார். அவர்கள் படும் வறுமையை தான் புரிந்துக்கொண்டதாக அவர்களை நம்ப வைக்கிறார். இதற்காக கஞ்சி குடிப்பது. குடிசை வீட்டில் இருப்பது போன்ற காட்சிகளை படத்தில் பயன்படுத்துகிறார். அவர் எப்போதும் திரைப்படங்களில் பணக்கார ஆதிக்க வர்க்கத்திற்கு எதிரானவராக இருக்கிறார்.
தினமும் முதலாளியிடம் அடி வாங்கி அடிமை வாழ்வு வாழும் ஒரு ஏழைக்கு அவர்களை திரும்ப எதுவுமே செய்ய முடியவில்லையே என்கிற ஆற்றாமை இருக்கிறது. இந்த ஆற்றாமையை எம்.ஜூ.ஆர் போக்குகிறார். அவர் ஆதிக்க வர்க்கத்தை அடித்து நொறுக்குகிறார். எங்க வீட்டு பிள்ளை திரைப்படத்தில் கிராமத்து பாமர வீட்டில் இருந்த எம்.ஜூ.ஆர் ஜமீனை சாட்டையால் அடிக்கிறார்.
இது பாமர மக்களுக்கு மருந்து போல் உள்ளதோடு அவர்கள் எம்.ஜூ.ஆரை தனக்கான மீட்பராக நினைக்கின்றனர். அவருக்காக உயிரையும் கொடுக்க அவர்கள் தயாராக இருக்கிறார்கள், ஆனால் அப்படியான கூட்டத்தை உருவாக்குவதில் உள்ள முக்கியமான பிரச்சனை நிஜ உலக எம்.ஜூ.ஆரும் கதாநாயகனாக இருக்க வேண்டும். இதற்காக எம்.ஜூ.ஆர் முதலில் பத்திரிக்கைகளை ஒடுக்குகிறார். பத்திரிக்கைகள் எதுவும் அவரை பற்றி தவறான விஷயங்களை எழுதாமல் பார்த்துக்கொள்கிறார். ஆனால் அவர் ஆங்கில பத்திரிக்கைகளை கண்டுக்கொள்ளவில்லை, ஏன் என்றால் அவற்றில் வரும் செய்திகள் பாமர மக்கள சென்றடையாது.
மேலும் அவர் எல்லா இடங்களிலும் தன்னை வீரம் மிகுந்தவனாகவும், தாய்மார்கள் மீது பக்தி கொண்டவராகவும் பேசுகிறார். சத்துணவு திட்டம் பற்றி பேசும்போது இவ்வாறு பேசுகிறார். “நான் பள்ளி முடித்து வீட்டிற்கு பசியோடு வருவேன், என் வீட்டில் சோறு இருக்காது. சாப்பாடு இல்லாமல் எனக்கு உணவளிக்க முடியவில்லையே என என் தாய் மனதிற்குள்ளே அழுவார்கள். அப்படி ஒரு நிலை இனி எந்த தாய்க்கும் வர கூடாது என்பதற்காகவே சத்துண்வு திட்டத்தை கொண்டு வருகிறேன் என பேசுகிறார்.
அவர் சிறு திட்டங்கள் நிறைவேற்றினால் கூட அதை அடுத்த நாளின் முக்கிய செய்தியாக ஆக்குவதில் எம்.ஜூ.ஆர் வல்லவராக இருந்துள்ளார். 100 பேருக்கு ரிக்‌ஷா வண்டி தருகிறார் என்றால் அடுத்த நாள் அனைத்து தாள்களிலும் அதுதான் தலைப்பு செய்தியாக இருக்க வேண்டும். இதனால் எம்.ஜூ.ஆரின் அனைத்து விஷயங்களும் மிகைப்படுத்தப்படுகின்றன. அரசின் காசை கொண்டு எம்.ஜு.ஆர் செயல்படுத்தும் எந்த திட்டங்களும் அவர் தன் கை காசால் செய்ததாகவே மக்கள் நம்புகின்றனர்.
இப்படியாக படத்தில் உள்ள எம்.ஜூ.ஆரும் நிஜத்தில் உள்ள எம்.ஜூ.ஆரும் வீரம், உழைப்பு, கொடை உள்ளம் என அனைத்திலும் ஒன்றாகதான் இருக்கிறார்கள். எனவே படத்தில் எம்.ஜு.ஆர் செய்யும் அனைத்தும் உண்மைதான் என்கிற நிலை வருகிறது.
இவை எல்லாம் தாண்டி எம்.ஜூ.ஆர் என்னும் பிராண்ட் எப்படி தன்னை ஒரு கடவுளாக மாற்றியது என்பது வரை அனைத்தும் அப்போது கிடைத்த ஆங்கில் செய்திதாள் ஆதாரங்கள் மற்றும் இன்னும் பல ஆதாரங்களை கொண்டு தொகுத்து எழுதியுள்ளார் ஆசிரியர் எஸ்.எஸ். பாண்டியன்.

Intellectual dishonesty. The book starts off by presenting a few selective statistics representing Tamil Nadu's macro-economic situation during MGR's rule, and also rightfully establishes the leader as one who presided over a rogue police state infamous for excesses. It is not my claim that the author is wrong on his grim assessment of the economic situation during the MGR years: it is only that he uses a devious way to present his case. The data points presented are not holistic and seem to have been put out just to drive home a certain point the author seems to have decided he wanted to make. So there are these dishonest representations of data, followed by 150 pages on MGR's films and how they were used as propaganda, and then some more selective data and boom, the book is over. On the positive front, there are some nice but irrelevant anecdotes on folk songs, which were enlightening. The "analysis" on MGR's films though were either pretentious or extremely obvious.

In effect, the author makes a weak case using data, and then rightly paints MGR in negative light for the kind of films he acted in during the latter half of his career as the lead and manipulated unsuspecting masses, and then ends the book with some more selective data on governance. MGR's propaganda was dubious, but that's not evidence of him being a bad leader who hurt the state. However, that's what the book wants you to believe. It's not my case that MGR is a great leader. But this book is as mischievous as MGR as it presents its propaganda as reality.

I am not satisfied with the book. Maybe my expectations were different. After reading the sample from Kindle, I thought this book would extensively cover the mismanagement that MGR rule was (and as described in its introduction). But MSS Pandian was keener on deconstructing the "image" that MGR built through his cinema and politics.

To his credit, he documents and articulates the "image" trap very well. But growing up with parents who had seen almost every MGR movie, his academic dissection was entirely new to me. What Pandian articulates in 100 pages, was explained to me as a kid by my parent's generation with equal clarity - right from MGR's subaltern hero image to his not-so-subtle political propaganda.

I assume though that for readers who aren't familiar with MGR films might find this a riveting read. There are other socio-political aspects touched fleetingly in the final chapters, like the decline of agriculture, the economic distress of the 70s that lead to the emergence of MGR. These are the aspects I would have liked to read more about!

Meticulously constructed image of a ruler. A truly wasted 10 years in Tamil Nadu's progress and probably the dark ages of Tamil Nadu easily. But the meticulously constructed image of MGR magically keeps the very own people he and his administration betrayed in a spell that makes him elect three times and kept the opposition clueless until he died. The author has done a great job dissecting the persona and the image build up construct in a meticulous analysis. Rarely we see books like this in Tamil that takes a contrarian view through a well researched analysis. Excellent work.

A brilliant academic treatise on how the "Image" of MGR was painstakingly constructed to "trap" the subaltern classes of Tamil Nadu.The author propounds that MGR's regime which enjoyed huge support from the poor actually served only the interests of the rich.

M.S.S.Pandian skilfully deploys Gramscian parameters to try explaining how a cine-actor was transformed into a folk hero of the masses. One of the most significant and original works ever on Tamil Nadu's politics.

Very biased views. Seems the author was disturbed with MGR's fame. MGR rule was always Pro poor and tje author view was not supported by any data. MGR done many reforms in village administration, education, transportation, agriculture and people welfare in Tamilnadu. That's why he has been remembered even today by Tamils across the globe. If it is image trap, it would have been bursted long back. Totally illogical conclusions have been drawn in this book against MGR.
