This is a timely piece of writing that argues passionately and persuasively for a serious reconsideration of the great scriptural principles that undergirded the Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century. Far from being outdated and irrelevant to the church today, Terry Johnson shows that these very principles are the essence of biblical Christianity. Sadly, the term 'Protestantism' has been rendered virtually redundant by years of misuse and abuse. it is seen as being antiquated and irrelevant in this present age of open-mindedness and political correctness. But Terry Johnson demonstrates that there is a powerful strong case to be made for the church to rediscover what this 'unpopular' and 'unfashionable' term really stands for. Using the great 'Reformation watchwords', he focuses our attention on Scripture, Christ, faith, grace and the glory of God in all aspects of daily life. Here is a well-written book, attractively presented and full of rich Bible teaching interspersed with thrilling illustrations from church history.
Terry Johnson was born and raised in Los Angeles. He studied history at the University of Southern California and also studied at Trinity College, Bristol, England, and Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary, before earning his D. Min in 2008 from Erskine Theological Seminary.
A valuable appeal to continue embracing the five Reformation solas, rooted in biblical teaching and interacting with both sixteenth-century and contemporary voices. Some very helpful lines of application too (although I cannot agree with everything Johnson concludes under Soli Deo Gloria).
Pastor Terry Johnson presents a winsome and compelling apologia for the church to consciously embrace the distinctive "battle cries" of the Protestant Reformation. It is a reminder of the continuing relevance of the Reformation. Pastors, have your entire ministry staff read and discuss this book. Christian, read and revel in these glorious biblical realities.
If you're Protestant: know scripture, scripture, scripture and then... know the solas! These are foundational correctives and priceless navigational tools for leading and keeping a biblical Christian walk. And Terry Johnson is a first-rate guide, writing with refreshing focus and clarity.
