Stel infiltrates the Third City, ruled by the charismatically insane Pirate King Roln, only to find that Roln holds two things very dear to her: her late husband's Helm suit...as well as the means to pilot it. Don't miss the chilling conclusion of the first arc of RICK REMENDER & GREG TOCCHINI's LOW.

Low has amazing concept I want to experience: underwater cities in a world with its sun going Red Giant. What odd and bewildering things are for us to find out? I am threading my way along the 1-6 collected version, so some of my criticism may be only warranted once I move a bit more forward.

Surrounded by cutthroats, Marik and Stel are in a very tight spot. The contrast between them is accentuated on this issue, Stel's optimism waning, Marik's rising. One thing I haven't mentioned is the writing - there are some amazingly quotable sentences: "pain and loss, it doesn't ever heal, you just live with it." The characters aren't opposed because they are on opposite sides of the battlefield, they stand for different things and see the world through different facets. There's a lot of *puts shades on* depth in Low (pun entirely intended). And while this philosophical sparring is taking place, there's a gladiatorial mega fight against an abyssal creature that rats krakens for breakfast and I'll be damned if I'm not throwing this at my TTRPG players as soon as I can!

Art work is amazing and the story is continuously riveting. It really makes you feel for what Marik is going through and how much a person can change given certain circumstances and how the human will can push through almost everything. Keeps you rooting for the underdogs and fascinated at how this story might end.

Four months later. Stel has still refused to give the coordinates of the pod's location. Roln uses Marik as bait, putting him in a gladiator style fight with great beasts of the sea, but Marik proves himself. Stel remains resolute. And Roln has one of his men stab Marik in the back, like literally.

Probably the climax of this first arc, issue #5 flies by in a flash of excitement. A truly enjoyable read that I won't spoil for you here. Enjoy!
