Is it too late for second chances when the girl you loved in your youth comes back into your life?
Gerolt de Warenne became guardian to a child-heiress named Cassandry when he was only nineteen-years old. As he watched her grow into a lovely young woman, he found himself falling in love with her, but Cassandry viewed him as an older brother. So, burying his feelings, he gave permission for her to marry another.
Twenty-four years later Gerolt and Cassandry meet again. With the loss of their respective spouses, Gerolt hopes to finally court Cassandry, but she desires to remain a widow. Instead, they agree to a betrothal of their children.
Matters become complicated as their friendship begins to evolve into the romance Gerolt has always wanted. But by the law of the medieval Church, Cassandry and Gerolt can’t marry if their children do. Can they find a way to be together? Or must they sacrifice their future for the love of their children?
"Courting Cassandry" is a “Hearts in Autumn” romance, medieval romances revolving around heroes and heroines “in the autumn of their years.” Because love isn’t only for the young!
Joyce DiPastena illuminates the Middle Ages for modern readers through heartfelt historical romance. However many changes a few centuries may bring, she believes that stories of love unite people across time. Joyce is a two-time Whitney Award finalist. The Historical Novel Society rated her romantic historical novel, The Lady and the Minstrel as “highly recommended,” while the same title won a Swoony Award for Excellence in Clean Secular Romance.
Joyce grew up in southern Arizona and can easily withstand summer temperatures of 115 degrees, as long as she’s sitting in a restaurant, movie theater, or under a ceiling fan—inside an air-conditioned building. She can be bribed with chocolate chip cookies and enjoys attending the Arizona Renaissance Festival every year. She holds a degree in history, specializing in the Middle Ages, from the University of Arizona. Joyce currently resides in Mesa, Arizona with her black cats, Nyxie and Calypso, who bring her good luck every day.
Joyce DiPastena really knows how to transport her readers back through time to another place. She creates worlds and people that are so vivid in my mind. It's one of the things I love about reading Joyce's books. This happens because Joyce knows her time period and she does her homework. It really shows in her writing.
In this Hearts in Autumn series, the focus is on couples who are a bit older- not old, just older than, well, younger. :) In this story, Cassandry and Gerolt are both parents of teenage children. Gerolt is a fair bit older than Cassandry and has loved her since her youth. Unfortunately, Gerolt was not the man Cassandry chose to marry but now, decades later, Cassandry has come into Gerolt's life once again.
I loved the stories within stories. Each character in this book has a story to tell. They all weave together but shape each character separately. It was a gentle and slow unfolding and I feel like I became more personally acquainted with each character page by page.
There were some points in the book that it started to feel a bit long- things I felt I already understood and knew as a reader were reiterated and I did a bit of skimming. Other than that, this book was top notch. A beautiful world to visit.
Joyce DiPastena is a fantastic author of the medieval era. I am always amazed at how she is able to write a wonderful story while she is paying attention to historical detail. She is able to capture the time period and bring it to life for me.
Courting Cassandry is a romance between to characters who are older in years. Both have been married before and have children. Both have lost their spouse. For Gerald, the romantic interest happened when she was young and wanting to marry her husband. Now that his wife has passed away he is interested in sparking the romance that he felt when he was younger. The problem is that Cassandry does not have a desire to marry again.
This book is very hopeful. In spite of setbacks, the characters have a hope for the future. Their present and past are not pretty, but they make the best of their lives and circumstances. The book also has an element of suspense/mystery.
The characters and story are well written. This is a clean romance that pulled me in from the beginning. I love reading Joyce's books and this book lived up to my expectations!
Courting Cassandry is another wonderful addition to the "Hearts in Autumn" medieval romance series. Joyce describes it this way, - "Hearts in Autumn” romance series, medieval romances revolving around heroes and heroines “in the autumn of their years.” Because you’re never too old to fall in love!”
I have truly loved reading a romance where the main characters are between the ages of 40-50+! There is something about more mature characters that bring their life stories into play as they contemplate a new romance in their life. Cassandry and Gerolt's story is one of true heartache. It is one of lost-love, unhappy marriages, longing for the love that wasn't within in their reach twenty years before, but it is now that they are given a second chance if only...
Yes, it's that, "If only..." that is the main plot in the story. Neither one of the main characters comes right out and say how they feel at first so there is a lot of beating around the bush about how they're feeling and expressing themselves to each other. Cassandry and Gerolt decide to have their teens become betrothed to one another, but both Egelina, Cassandry's daughter and Rauffe, Gerolt's son, aren't liking their parents plans. Then you throw in old grudges with other characters, jealousies, blackmail and other nefarious things and you have more than a romance here. There is enough mystery, suspense and other dark things going on that you are not sure who will make it out alive, happy and/or sane.
The dialogue is so beautiful with the language from this time period. Joyce's writing brings the beauty and mystic of medieval England alive in her books. You are always assured of a clean read and know that you will have a good story with an intriguing plot line when you read a book by Joyce DiPastena. If you are looking for something unique and different from the "normal" romance out there, you need to pick up Courting Cassandry or any of Joyce's books. She knows this time period so well and she knows how to write a satisfying book for romance readers.
***This book is for teens and adults. There is some kissing, no sex, and little violence, except for a mild knife attack.***
This is the first book I've read by Joyce DiPastena, and I enjoyed it immensely. First, let me say that I received a review copy of this work in exchange for an honest review. I accepted with some trepidation because I am never anything less than honest in my reviews, and I don't like to write a review if I can't give a work at least 4 stars. (3 stars is my threshold for historical non-fiction.) I could tell by the first few chapters this was not going to be an issue.
Hero - Probably one of the sweetest heroes I've encountered in a long time. While definitely not a beta male, he's a man who is in control of his alpha side. Perhaps because he's so guided by his sense of honor. I just love that in a man.
Heroine - I really appreciate levelheaded heroines, and Cassandry comes across the way you would expect a well-grounded woman with a daughter on the verge of adulthood to behave. There comes a point in life when one's responsibilities and obligations must take precedence.
Despite Cassandry and Gerolt being well behaved, there is plenty of sizzle between them. Note: this is also a clean romance so no need to skip over (or pour over if that is your inclination) page after page of intimate details.
The prose is beautifully written as well. There were a couple of words that sounded modern to my ear, but I think I'll give the benefit of the doubt to an author that has a degree in medieval studies.
I'm giving Courting Cassandry five stars for two reasons. First, it was entirely my cup of tea. Second, because I cannot think if a single thing I would change. It's been a long time since I've been compelled to click my iPad on at 3 AM just so I can keep reading. Well done, Ms. DiPastena!
I was provided a copy in exchange for a fair and honest review. Romance, clean. Violence was minimal. I have enjoyed J. D.P. writing and this novel was no exception. She beautifully describes the time period, and also the feelings of the characters in her novels. I almost wrote 'people' and I have to say, it is very easy to get caught up in the novel and feel that the people are real. We can see the frustrations, emotions, worries, concerns, and of course the sorrows along with the joys and happiness of each of the characters. Seeing the Cassandry and Gerolt's feelings that they seek to hide from each other, the fears of both parents as both of their past's are gradually unfolded and of course the worries and pressing concerns of the present, was a beautiful read for me. Cassandry, Gerolt, their children, the servants, vassals, knights, and ladies all 'breathed' for me in this sweet, lush tale. The poetry, the beautiful sadness, the mystery, the duties, and the joys were vivid and alive for me. I am not an expert on medieval times, but this made me want to learn more about it, and wish for more of their story! Hope to hear more about the other characters in another book! Thank you for a wonderful escape!
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect, in any way, my opinion of the book.
The book starts with Gerolt arriving at Cassandry's to propose to her. This is one of the very few things that didn't sit well with me. Gerolt last saw her at her husband's funeral three years back and the next time he sees her, he's there to propose. I think there should have been a prologue or something where they meet at the funeral and then a few meetings mentioned in between. It felt weird that he came to propose to her after three years of no contact.
From there, the story progressed beautifully. Although the book was lengthy, there was not a moment when the pace slowed or I got bored. The setting, the details of the time period and the overall writing was beautiful. The story flowed wonderfully. The mystery of the gifts and the suspence of how Gerolt and Cassandry would get together kept me intrigued.
Now let's talk about the best thing about Courting Cassandry. The characters. I loved Gerolt and Cassandry. Gerolt was kind, patient and loving while Cassandry was strong yet vulnerable. They both had their faults which made them more lovable. Their relationship with their children was so beautiful and heartwarming. They had their quarrels and didn't always see eye to eye but they loved each other and seemed genuine. I especially loved the bond between Gerolt's son Rauffe and Cassandry and how they formed a strong friendship between them. The interactions between Rauffe and Cassandry's daughter, Egelina were so fun to watch. I think Rauffe is my favourite character in this book. He was so well rounded and his insecurities and doubts endeared me to him. The interactions between Rauffe and Cassandry's daughter, Egelina were so fun to watch.
Even the villian was very well written. I absolutely hated him but I could see what made him the way he was. He was not evil just for the sake of being evil, if that makes any sense. His motives and actions were realistic and, at the end, I even felt sorry for him.
There were a few annoyances here and there like the starting and Cassandry making stupid conclusions without evidence. Also the span of 22, 23 and 24 years was mentioned so many times in the first quarter that it got annoying. However, these are very small grievances and did not distract from the book.
All in all, Courting Cassandry was a wonderful book that I would recommend to anyone who loves clean romances with the protagonists at the autumn of their lives.
Acclaimed author Joyce DiPastena has once again written a medieval romance novel that does not disappoint. The second book in the A Hearts in Autumn Romance series is a simple delight. This series is intriguing in that it tells romance stories of women and men later in life. Courting Cassandry depicts the complicated relationship of a man and woman with a struggling, developing, and budding friendship and romance. Gerolt is Cassanddry’s previous guardian, so how can they possibly fall in love, especially when their children are betrothed and a relationship between them is thus forth forbidden by the Medieval Church. Readers will be captivated by the charming and beautiful love story, as well as the wonderfully developed characters. I would recommend this novel to readers that enjoy medieval romance novels.

A very engaging page turner!
I didn't know what to expect starting this book. (I haven't read the first in the series) I have read many of the author's precious novels and loved them!
This story was different being set in the 'autumn of the character's lives'. It was a very refreshing change.
The characters were very relatable and the author presents it in a way that you feel for them as they face their trials.
I always love how Joyce keeps close to the history of the time. ( How important an heir was and how young many people died.)
I read it very fast. The story kept my interest and there was a very interesting twist.
The love story was very sweet. I loved the complex relationship with both main character's pervious spouses. It shows the complex of emotions that occurs after the 'honeymoon' stage.
This is a well written medieval romance. Gerault has loved Cassandry from the time she was old enough to marry. He loved her enough to let her marry who she wanted to. She only saw him as an older brother figure. Unfornately, Cassandry's husband was not all what he first seemed to be and she suffered through a bad marriage. After losing both of their spouses, Gerault hopes to convince Cassandry to marry him but she is determined never to marry again. Gerault in a desperate attempt to keep in contact with Cassandry decides their children should marry. This does not make either of their children happy. Over the course of the book, Cassandry discovers how blind she was to Gerault's love for her and she discovers how much she loves him. Gerault needs and heir and if his sickly son can't provide one then he needs to marry a younger women who will be able to give him his heir. Will Gerault and Cassandry get a second chance at love or will duty get in the way?
Readers who’ve never become acquainted with 13th century England may find it a shocking place, ruled by religion and stringent proprietary bounds. Those familiar will find a true-to-the-time second-chance romance and will be cheering throughout for a happy ending.
Courting Cassandry is the second installment of a Hearts and Autumn Romance series and the first book I have read by Joyce DiPasterna. I really enjoyed this book! I love the historical details. I love the young love and later in life love. Such a beautiful story of second chances. 5+ stars I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion, which was given.
What a wonderful story! The setting is in the time of lords and ladies, and pages and squires. There is lots of adventure and intrigue as well as delicious romance. There is also the thread of forgiveness that I appreciated throughout the book! This is the first book I've read by this author and I will be reading more for sure.
“Courting Cassandry” is part of Joyce DiPastena’s “Hearts in Autumn” series. Autumn doesn’t refer to the season, but to heroes and heroines in the autumn years of life.
If was nice to read about characters that had experienced life and learned from it, characters that were more mature. Yet Geralt and Cassandry still had their faults and insecurities. Geralt was a good, honorable man and a strong leader. He cared about others, and was very thoughtful when making decisions that would affect those around him. He is one of my all time favorite heroes! Cassandry was so kind and loving. She has gone through a lot in life, and it has scarred her. It was wonderful to watch her find herself again and begin to feel once more.
The relationships they had with their children were very real. They were full of love, but also conflict and some rebellion. Something a parent can definitely relate to! I loved that Cassandry’s sense of mothering extended to Rauffe almost immediately. They had a special relationship.
The story kept my interest throughout. I wanted to know what had happened in the past as well as what was happening in the present. Some things I partially figured out, and some I didn’t at all. The romance, the mystery and the story were well balanced. I loved the medieval setting! Joyce DiPastena knows her time period very well! And there is a glossary!!
This is the first full-length novel I’ve read by the author. I really enjoyed it, and found myself staying up to read “just a little longer.” I’m looking forward to reading more of her books!
I was given a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Cassandry is a widow and Gerolt, her guardian growing up, comes to visit her and suggests for her to marry again. She turns down the idea instantly claiming she's to old. He suggests an arranged marriage between his son Rauffe and her 15 year old daughter Egelina (Gelli). Cassandry couldn't have trusted anybody better than Gerolt with the safekeeping of her daughter. She brings Gelli to the engagement ceremony and plans to only stay long enough to make sure her daughter is settled in. Gelli is at a difficult age and refuses to marry Rauffe because she wants to join the nunnery. She only wants to be a nun to learn to read and write and Cassandry refuses to let her learn because it only causes problems. Someone is sending gifts to Gelli. Cassandry thinks one of Gerolt's knights might be courting her since Rauffe is very sickly and may not even make it to their wedding day. Gerolt needs an heir to take over his lands and if Rauffe doesn't marry soon and produce an heir he'll need to marry himself. Gerolt knows Cassandry doesn't want to marry, plus, if their children marry it's forbidden but Gerolt can't lose Cassandry again. After she married one of his knights, he missed her friendship. But she's keeping something from him and he can't understand why. Joyce weaves a beautiful story set in 13 century England with knights and ladies. The characters are wonderful and flawed, making them all the more real. It's a beautiful romance with a little mystery.
COURTING CASSANDRY Courting Cassandry is a historical romance/romance love genre book. I don't usually like this genre, because I have a BA in History and I tend to over analyze the historical aspects of the setting of these kinds of books. So with that being said, I can honestly say I really enjoyed the vivid 3 dimensional characters of this book. I believe Joyce laid out a great plot twist with Samson and his daughter Marion and she made her main characters, Gerolt and Cassandry, lovable and enduring. I believe the author did a great job giving you mystery, suspense, and romance with historical accuracy all rolled into one great story. I compare all romance novels to Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Which means I'm always looking for strong characters like Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet. I am particular about my ratings for the romance genre and I think Joyce does a great job trying to create strong characters so I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars. I did notice that the book did seem a little long, but I did not deduct this from my ratings. I think that the author had to make the book a little longer, because she had to cram so much into this book. I will definitely be reading more books by this author! It was a clean romantic happily ever after book that lived up to all my Great Expectations.
An emotional and sweet medieval romance. Cassandry de Reymes is a little concerned when her former guardian, and liege lord comes to visit. She knows her daughter is coming up to an age where she should be looking for a husband. With her own unhappy marriage behind her she is desperate to protect her daughter from a husband who might not care for her. Gerolt de Warrenne took guardianship of Cassandry when she was still a child. He has always loved her, maybe more than he should have. When she fell in love with one of his knights he allowed the marriage. Now that Cassandry is a widow and he a widower with a sickly heir, he has two choices. Either marry and beget another heir or make sure his son marries to give him a grandson quickly. This is an emotional story that shows us just how destructive jealousy can be. What starts as an intense love can be ruined when one partner is insecure. The most innocent of details can be twisted and used against a totally faithful spouse. Who will pay the ultimate price,? I loved this story, It drew me in from the first page to the last. There is danger to a totally innocent party, and someone working behind the scenes for their own desires. I want to find out what happens next.
There’s nothing quite like reading a medieval England romance. There’s just something about that time period that really speaks to my heart. If you are like me and love that time period, you won’t want to miss Courting Cassandry. I also appreciate that the two main characters are middle aged. Gerolt is the liege lord of Cassandry and her daughter Egelina. Gerolt had also been Cassandry’s guardian at the tender age of 19 when his father died. He has been in love with Cassandry for many years, but never let her know of his love. Cassandry fell in love with and married a knight serving Gerolt. The story opens two years after her husband’s death. Gerolt is hopeful that he might now fulfil his desire to marry Cassandry. When it doesn’t appear that Casssandry shares his affections, he proposes a marriage between her daughter and his son. She agrees and her and Egelina travel to his castle for the betrothal. Things do not go as expected at the castle. Treachery lurks. This is a good, clean read. It has humor, romance, and suspense. I highly recommend it.
What a hard life Cassandry had after she left the castle of Gerolt de Warenne her guardian. He let her marry the man she fell in love with and then she blamed him when her husband became abusive. There was such heartache, betrayal and misunderstanding between Cassandry and Gerolt that when she asked for her teenage daughter to marry his son, he felt he still couldn't refuse her anything. This story became one of his love for her and with her determination of never marrying again, she was putting up a barrier between them that he couldn't tear down. Then the blatant refusal of her daughter to marry Gerolt's son certainly made for some interesting reactions through out the castle. Mystery, betrayal and misplaced blame made for an interesting trip back into medieval times. Learning the ways of royalty and how one must conduct themselves made what one wanted not always what one received! I was gifted a copy by the author to review..
After 24 years, Gerolt finally thinks he has the chance to be with the woman he has loved for many years. However, he accepts Cassandry's desire to remain a widow and these two arrange for their children to be betrothed. From there, matters become more and more complicated.
Reading a love story about two people who are not young, who have experience, was a refreshing change from virgin maidens and dashing knights. I especially liked these two characters. The things they went through in their lives had an effect on them and it shows in how they interact with each other. I even enjoyed their children and the interaction between parent and child.
I honestly can't think of anything I would change in this and this is definitely for anyone who loves a medieval story that is clean, well written and full of details.
I was provided with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
4.5 stars. What a wonderful medieval romance! I have read several of this author's books and I'm always amazed by the quality of the research and the amount of historical detail that goes into each one. So many little details that really bring this time period to life! Not only details regarding titles and land and politics and such, but also small elements like food preparation and dining. I also enjoyed reading a story where the hero and heroine are both a little bit older. Of course, this made them both plenty stubborn and set in their ways, but their maturity was a nice element to the story. Great characters -- I loved both Cassandry and Gerolt and well as their children. I also thought that Samson was an intriguing character and his relationship with Gerolt was interesting as well. Note: I received a free ebook copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This is the first book I have read by this author and also the first of the Hearts in Autumn series. A medieval romance that did not disappoint. Well written to keep the reader engaged. The main characters in this story are Gerolt and Cassandry, two people who both know deep down that they love one another, although neither, especially Cassandry is willing to admit it and marry, as they instead wish for their children to marry. The author does a great job of showing their love for each other and the challenges they face as they come to the realization that they really should be together. I would recommend this book, as I, for one, did not want to put it down
Allow Joyce DiPastena to transport you back to the Medieval days in which noble lords courted their ladies with poems and tokens of favor. Taste the dishes they ate, see the tapestries, know the limitations of Medieval medicine, and feel the despair of duty over love.
COURTING CASSANDRY is a second chance at love story. Or is it? Do Gerolt and Cassandry have any chance? Now that they have reunited after losing their respective spouses, they have fallen in love. But their children are betrothed, which prevents them from marrying by the laws of the church. And, Gerolt desperately needs a young wife in case his son can't produce an heir. It's his duty. Circumstances conspire against them.
A happy ending seems impossible. How can Gerolt and Cassandry get their second chance?
This book was different than I expected, but I really enjoyed it. I like books from this time period. I liked Gerolt and cassandry's friendship. The author was able to describe enjoyable memories from their time together years before that made me smile and gave me a real feel for the characters personalities and priorities. I was relieved that he didn't back down in the end. I liked that their children became friends. Sam was a great bad guy. He was highly suspect all along. I wanted to smack his daughter.I would recommend this for teens on up as an clean, enjoyable escape about friendship, trust, sacrifice, and love. I love the cover. I look forward to reading more by this author. I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
I liked the fact that this book was written about an older couple because love isn't only for the young. :) However, because of the preconceived limitations of their age, along with other factors, it plays into the frustration that they don't connect and are constantly misunderstanding one another. It took me a while to get into the book. But once I did, I was desperate to find out if they get their second chance at love. I was also on the edge of my seat to know if Gerolt’s poor, sickly son was really sick or was he being poisoned? There was plenty of drama, suspense, and plot twists to keep me interested to the end.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book for review purposes. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions stated are my own.*
Courting Cassandry held me captive from the first page to the last. It delivers a passionate but tender romance as well as an edge-of-your-seat mystery. Ms. DiPastena brilliantly entrances the reader with multilayered conflicts and interwoven high-stakes relationships. This beautifully crafted novel kept me up too late at night; I just had to know what would happen next. Utterly addictive! All of her books are exceptional and very hard to put down! This is a truly wonderful read that I recommend to romantic hearts everywhere!
Another gem by Ms. DiPastena. I'm enjoying this series where the main couples are not in their teens or even early twenties. The ages and maturity of the couples give added depth and reality, without being too prosaic. As always, the attention to details of the customs and terms of the time period made it a joy to devour this book. Can't wait for the next one!
I received a free copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. From the moment I began reading, I had a hard time putting this book down! The characters were described well and the story line kept me entranced. I can't wait to explore more works by this author. If you like historical romance, especially set during medieval times, I highly recommend this book.
