The Executioner’s Redemption: My Story of Violence, Death, and Saving Grace

Rate this book
The wrenching account of one man’s journey from executioner to pastor.

When young Tim Carter started working at a prison to make money for college, he didn’t realize that he was signing away his life, his heart, and his very self to a career of brutal violence and routine executions. In the midst of the darkness of prison life, the light of God’s Word shone in front of him. Condemned inmates were brought to faith and given eternal life. Families of inmates and victims took immense comfort in God’s justice and redemption. But inside Carter’s heart, a fierce battle raged. Was he carrying out God’s will by wielding the sword of the state? Or was he actually doing more harm than good?

In these pages, you’ll walk with Tim into the violence and through death row. You’ll stumble with him through God’s crushing judgment and into His tender love. And you’ll learn that even in the darkest places, God is still there.

I knew this book would be interesting (given the subject and the jacket description); yet this book exceeded all my expectations by far!! I am blown away that such a dark account of such a dreadful work environment could read so much like a novel and yet convey such all-encompassing theological insights and inspiration!! This is truly a fascinating read that I highly recommend for everyone!!
This is so much more than one's man's account of working for a prison and even working the executions of death row and even dealing with lies, deceptions by wolves and hostilities of protestors; it wrestles with the deepest questions of the justice system and incarcerations' but also with the deepest questions of human existence and fulfillment. Yet, despite being a deep dive into a dark subject, it reads really quick and serves as one of the best inspirational books available!
As the author states: "My twenty-year quest to know God’s will in the most disturbing aspects of capital punishment ultimately led me to this very destination—the blessing of a disciplined habit of a daily nearness to God. My search for the answers to punitive justice problems ultimately helped me find the answer to all problems."
Well said!! Well written!!

This book is a surprising fascinating find! Author, Pastor Timothy Carter weaves engrossing stories from his time working in the Texas penitentiary system with sound Biblical Truth. The deep scars and painful realities of inmates as well as those of family members of violent crime victims, is at times hard to read, but beautifully and faithfully written to honor each person in every story. Carter is refreshingly honest about his own struggle with the death penalty, issues of justice and mercy, and vengeance and judgement. I used this book as a daily devotion for most of the summer and was thankful for the insights it gave me on justice, compassion, and grace. Worth the read!

Great book

This book was eye opening! As a Prison Ministry volunteer it encouraged me to keep answering the call to serve the incarcerated. As a family member of a wolf, this book has encouraged me to trust that God is in full control.

Grace-filled compassion in action

Such an inspiring read! Biblically based writing and the love of Christ shining through! I thank God for faithful Christian workers in government and prisons to serve human wolves with the love and mercy of God.
