Originally published in Hearst’s International-Cosmopolitan magazine (May 1935), COUNTRY DOCTOR is A. J. Cronin’s affectionate look at young Finlay Hyslop, a newly qualified Scottish doctor who assists a seasoned country GP in managing a variety of medical crises.
Archibald Joseph Cronin was a Scottish novelist, dramatist, and non-fiction writer who was one of the most renowned storytellers of the twentieth century. His best-known works are The Citadel and The Keys of the Kingdom, both of which were made into Oscar-nominated films. He also created the Dr. Finlay character, the hero of a series of stories that served as the basis for the long-running BBC television and radio series entitled Dr. Finlay's Casebook. -Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A.J._Cronin

Very straightforward and easy-to-read book, it is warm and humane, and the absence of formal experiment feels right here. My grandfather, a doctor, passed away today, so finishing this short volume was a way to think of him, and it comforts me that there are more books about doctor Finlay and his Levenford practice, more humble stories about humble Scottish characters, sometimes sad, but always written with love for people.
These are short stories, and A .J. Cronin, creates unforgettable characters in a memorable setting. He sculpted his characters with swift and precise words. This is a must read.
