Gracie's Song

"Everything can be undone." That's what someone tells Gracie Brannen, but she's doubtful. After graduation, she walked away from everyone she knew with barely a word. Ten years later, she's back. Even as familiar places and faces bring back old pain, Gracie finds hope in rebuilding old ties and forging new ones. Maybe everything can't be undone, but perhaps everything can be overcome.

I had a few tears in my eyes reading this story. Gracie Brennan is back in her hometown of Glenwood after leaving abruptly ten years ago. She's back to say goodbye to her Mother, her sister Hannah hasn't seen her in years and has looked after their sick mother. Everyone is wondering why Gracie left after graduation all those years ago, not least Flynn her childhood friend and love of her life.
I really loved this story as the truth is slowly revealed in flashbacks and you can see the heartbreak that Gracie endured and how much stronger she became through some hard choices. It's a well written story and it does have a lovely ending that left me very satisfied.

Gracie’s Song by Michelle Schlicher was my first author-requested book review. Michelle was so sweet to contact me and send me a signed copy of her new novel in exchange for an honest review. I was a little nervous about it, worrying about if I ended up not enjoying it and then having to explain why. Luckily, that was not the case!

Gracie has spent the last 10 years of her life, disconnected from everyone she’s known, including her mother and sister, Hannah. No one knows why she left or where she went and the only communication she’s had has been with a few exchanged emails with her mom and sister over the years. But when Gracie’s mother dies, she has to suck it up and return to Glenwood and face everyone and everything she left behind, including the love of her life, Finn Miller.

I really enjoyed Schlicher’s writing. It had a really nice flow and pace that matched the tone of the story, beautiful and simple. There were times when it would get a bit confusing though as Gracie would have these flashbacks and so all of a sudden we would get thrown into an old memory of her childhood. I think it was just a bit hard to realize this was occurring due to the way the book is laid out and could be fixed quite easily with a little symbol in the breaks between scenes. But other than that, I never had any problems. The flashbacks were a wonderful add to to see the differences between the old Gracie and the new one. They also were really powerful, especially the scenes with her family interactions. Her dad was a piece of work, lemme tell you.

I really enjoyed Gracie and watching how her strength grew as the story progressed. She was an interesting character. I really connected with her because I come from a really small town where no one ever leaves, just like her. So I recognize the need to get away and feeling of suffocation when you stay. The mystery surrounding her disappearance was very well drawn out and I could feel myself understanding why she chose to do what she did. Though it took me towards the end to completely agree with her choice (thanks to another great flashback). But she never whined or was bitter which I really appreciated because I honestly expected her to be that way, so it was a pleasant surprise to see that she wasn’t. I also loved the relationship she rebuilt with her sister, Hannah, and Hannah’s daughter, Cayla. It was so sweet. The flashbacks also helped explain a little bit of the background between them two which was nice to see.

I’m not gonna talk about Finn Miller. I don’t want to ruin him for you all before you get a chance to read about him yourself. Just know that he is amazing and sweet. ;)

All in all, I thought this was a great book and I really recommend it. I think the only issue I had was that it did fall to the miscommunication trope that most contemporaries use as the source for the conflict in the story. That just happens to be a minor pet peeve of mine because I’m just a really honest person and I don’t see why people don’t just say exactly what’s going on with them. But regardless of that, this was a great read and I’m so glad that I was able to experience it.

Pros

. Simple, realistic story : New adult stories usually have the tendency to become either too dramatic, or too cliche. Thankfully, this book steared clear of that typical NA melodrama and presented a simple, believable, likeable and realistic story. Reading the book gave the very feeling of a small town atmosphere and the book didn’t try to be more than what it was.

. Character development : The character development was good, and more visible than what I was expecting. The characters grow throughout the story and all of the characters were good and likeable.

. Flashbacks : I personally love books which provide flashbacks, or which go into different time periods. I loved the occasional flashbacks in the story, it gave more depth and emotion to the characters.

. Wasn’t entirely about the romance : I’m glad that the author didn’t put all of her focus on just the romance, but gave equal importance to family and friendship. Loved that aspect of the book.

Cons

This is one of those books where there is nothing really wrong/bad, but you still can’t give it a 4 or a 5 rating : because it wasn’t phenomenal. I can’t think of anything bad in the book, I liked every aspect, but that is the point : I liked the book. It wasn’t extraordinary, it wasn’t phenomenal. It was a good, one-time read which I will recommend but most probably will not re-read.

However, there is one thing I would like to address :

. The cover : It is horrible. I can’t make sense of what the cover is, or what it is trying to be. It’s largely unappealing to look at, it’s just bad.

My Rating

3/5 stars

I enjoyed the book quite a lot.

This is a trimmed down version of my review, to view the full review visit The Book Ramble.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Gracie walked away from her family, her boyfriend - her entire life - 10 years ago, but when he mother dies she has to return home and face the people she left behind. Gracie tries to rebuild the relationships she ended when she left but it won't be as easy as just showing back up and apologizing - especially not when it comes to her ex-boyfriend, Finn, who she walked away from without a word of explanation. Can Gracie fix things before she loses everything for good?

Gracie's Song is a fun, fast read. The trouble with Gracie's Song is that it's not a bad book, it's just got so many problems that at a certain point you just can't overlook them all. The idea behind the story was good, the use of flashbacks was well meaning but not used properly, the romance had all the right bits but was also misused, and most importantly the action is confusing and choppy. I wanted to enjoy Gracie's Song and for a long time I did, until enough piled up to make me disappointed.

I think Gracie is a great lead. She has a troubled past, something she hasn't let hold her back, and instead she's used it to make herself stronger. I loved that, Gracie has this fierce strength in her which I could see, but I'm not sure Schlicher really utilized fully. I think Schlicher built Gracie into someone strong and then kind of flopped on the ending.

There's a pretty large supporting cast in this book. There are some okay characters, though not a lot of them are really developed beyond a sort of generic set of humble, country folk, nice small-town-er vibe. I think Gracie's brother, Nick, would have been a really exceptional character but we don't really get enough of him. Romantic lead, Finn, was kind of bland and I didn't see that much of a spark between the pair.

The fact that I didn't feel any spark between Finn and Gracie made the romantic parts a little tedious for me. I think Schlicher had a lot of the right elements for the romance to work for other people but I don't know if she really used them well. This pair has such a rich history obviously, and it would have been more interesting for me to have seen them struggling with that when they're supposed to be going out together. It seemed like Schlicher often focused on the more mundane aspects of this then really hitting any of the emotional highs or lows of the relationship.

The narration switches between the present and a series of flashback sequences about Gracie's childhood and teen years, this can make for an interesting sort of suspense, I don't think Schlicher really used it that well though, and instead made kind of a muddled mess of her storytelling. The flashbacks seem to come in such a random order, there's nothing significant about them but there always should be. There's a lot of this choppy, uneven, random cutting in the book. There were times when I thought the pages were in the wrong order because I'd suddenly jumped from one scene to another without transition, explanation, or anything.

I want to stress that I really liked the idea behind this book. I love the redemptive quality of Gracie's journey - it is a journey and an emotional one at that. I think Schlicher really developed a fantastic back story for Gracie, I just think there were a lot of mistakes that could have been fixed in the editing process. If you liked contemporary romances this is a book worth looking into, it's an impressive read for being self published, just be cautious as it can be confusing at times.

Good Read

This is a romance novel. It is well written except for the repetitiveness of the situation.

Thank you for the read.

I don't know what it is, but I am a sucker for a coming home story. After learning about the death of her mother, Gracie is returning to her hometown for the first time in ten years. Since she suddenly left town after graduation, she's forced to face not only the people she left behind, but the questions that aroused with her sudden departure.

One of the things I enjoyed most about this book was Gracie's story. As someone who grew up in a dysfunctional household, I found I could really relate to some of the incidences that occurred during Gracie's childhood. I could also relate to how these kinds of situations can affect someone years later. Too often people assume that once a child is removed from a bad situation, everything will be okay. Even though Gracie was fortunate enough that her abusive, alcoholic father eventually left her family, she still struggles with the emotional and psychological damage he impacted on her.

Another great aspect of this story is the fact that Gracie is getting the opportunity to reconnect with her family, friends and even her past. It's an opportunity that a lot of people would probably kill for. But it also serves to make this a compelling and heartwarming tale. If I had to recommend a book to a friend, this is exactly the book I would recommend. I can't pinpoint a single aspect of it that I had an issue with and it's only for the fear of spoiling the book that I have been holding back with my thoughts. In my book, this is a must read that every bookworm should check out.

Reviewer's note: I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Out of the two books I have read, written by Michelle Schlicher, this was definitely my favorite. Gracie's Song had the true makings of a real American story about real life struggle. The problems that Gracie ran away from as well as had to face were ones that women deal with all the time in today's society. Schlicher ambitiously writes about how Gracie deals with conflict with her sister as well as unresolved feelings toward both her parents. She has to deal with feelings of guilt with the death of her mother, while at the same time opening old wounds and coming to terms with losing her own daughter. Gracie had to own up to her mistakes like cutting off contact and running from the people that cared about her. I thought this book was able to capture the "realness" of a women's life.

I loved Gracie's character because I was able to see a lot of myself in her; her struggle with family and love and letting go. It's a well written insight into the life of what every women (in one way or another) struggles with at some point in her life. I thought Schlicher was able to show the true strength in Gracie's character and I could really empathize with the pain that she went through. . Gracie's Song showed how some choices will change your life, but those same choices can also lead you back to where you were always meant to be.

Such a great read!!

I was fortunate enough to receive an advanced copy of this book and I'm so glad I did. Michelle strikes again with another book that's hard to put down! There are so many facets and dynamics to this story and it provoked so many different emotions, but was heartwarming as well. I hope Michelle has more up her sleeve, because right now she's 2 for 2!

For being a free (or nearly free) book on Amazon, I wasn't expecting much. I've read quite a few free Amazon books, and have not had the best of luck. I guess that's why I haven't read this one, even months after receiving it.

But I was wrong.

So far, this is the best "free" book I've gotten on Amazon. The story is well written, with a good plot & wonderful characters. You cannot help but fall in love with Gracie, Cayla, Olivia, Hannah, Nick, and, especially, Finn. The story had a good flow, and I could hardly put it down. The only part I didn't love was the ending. It just ended so abruptly. Maybe that is what the author wanted, but I would have loved to see their lives a little further down the line. But, I am just one of those people. I don't like to guess how it ended, or come up with my own finale. I want to be told.

Still, the story was a good book to kick off my new year. I would recommend this to anyone who likes a feel-good, light-hearted love story, that also has some depth to it.

Gracie left Glenwood and everyone she loved, and kept her reasons to herself.

Fast forward ten years, Gracie is back because her mother dies and she needs to say goodbye to her. Gracie also has a sister Hannah, a niece she has never met, her best friend Olivia, and her, left behind boyfriend Finn. ...….. She also has a story to tell.

This is a great story of two children growing up and always being in love. Gracie's home life wasn't always the happiest, but she always had Finn to turn to. He was always there for her. That was the story of Gracie and Finn. There was never a time when they didn't love each other, so when she up and left, no one understood why, especially Finn. She had a lot of explaining to do to everyone, but most of all to him.

This was a good book. What I have written is all I am going to say. You need to read the book. Find out all the things happened and see how Gracie explains everything to Finn and her friends and family.

I loved the book. It was one I had in my hands every time I had a spare minute to read.

Gracie goes back to her home town after her mother’s death

I had tears in my eyes for almost the whole book. At the beginning I was annoyed that the readers weren’t told why Gracie left town and stayed away for so many years. Throughout the book, I didn’t like the way many of the flashbacks dropped in so abruptly. I didn’t understand why Gracie stayed away. The death of a child is the worst pain a mother can feel. To go through it without the support of her mother and sister was incomprehensible to me. I really felt a great deal of sympathy for Finn, first not knowing why Gracie left, then the anger and pain he felt when she told him about Rosie 10 years too late. Many aspects of this story reflected my life, thus the tears.

Sigh.

Romance by rote. Maybe it’s just me, but I can’t feel any connection to these characters. Meeting your one true love as a child and then leaving him because the fates force you to is just such a tired old trope. And failing to speak to your family for ten years being forgiven in one conversation is... unlikely, to say the least. That said, I finished it. And it wasn’t terribly written. 2.5 stars.

True Love??

They grew up together and fell in love. Unfortunately, she was frightened and ran away. Could she ever repair their love for each other?

She stayed away for several years, before returning home. She wasn't sure she could repair the hurt she had left behind. To find out if she could you will have to read the book

It has been awhile since I read a really good book. I could not put this one down. Needless to say I stayed up way to late but it was so worth it. This is one of those books that makes you laugh, cry and get really angry. The story captures your heart and makes you connect with each character. That is great storytelling!

“Everyone has to grow up...get over their shitty childhoods. You could’ve come back any time, and you didn’t.” That sort of sums up the whole novel. Gracie was a selfish idiot who hurt everyone who loved her for a decade or the rest of their lives, whichever came first. Hard to feel any sympathy for her throughout the book. I was rooting for Finn to get over her by the end.

Predictable...and pleasant

The story was easy to follow, even though I read it over a long period of time. I enjoyed seeing Gracies growth as she matured. Having grown up in a rural area, there were a number of realistic experiences that I recognized. I would recommend this book for ‘light’ reading.
