This delightful book brings awareness to the plight of many animals that are abandoned, lost, or neglected in our world. "Animal Magic" provides rescue, care and temporary shelter for unfortunate animals who are in need of nurturing and a chance to be re-homed.
"Animal Magic's" mission is to see that animals are healthy, happy and loved. Ella and Caleb Harrison who reside at the centre along with their parents are involved every day in that process. The family realizes the number of animals in their care is increasing so they devise a plan, an anniversary celebration, to raise awareness of these forgotten animals and hopefully in doing so the animals will find a loving home to be adopted into.
They recruit soccer star Jake Adams to come on board knowing his presence will draw a bigger crowd and the event will be a huge success. For some strange reason, that nobody can fathom, Jake cancels his appearance at the last minute and the siblings, feeling let down and abandoned themselves in their time of need, set out to find why he is a no-show.
When the kids arrive at Jake's mansion they find his adopted kitten, Charlie, outside all by himself, locked out of the house and meowing helplessly on the doorstep. Oh my! What in the world could be going on?
Will the kids find out the truth of the disappearance of Jake? And why is his beloved kitten roaming around outside unsupervised, hungry and scared? There are many twists and turns in the mystery of Jake's vanishing but the truth finally is revealed. But is it too late to help out those poor pets that need a home? Have they been deserted once again? I know you will enjoy the book and the sketches add a lot of interest and richness to the narrative. The message is positive and educational. Written as a chapter book I know that kid's will respond well to the message and who knows? They may go out with their family and adopt a pet too.
Unfortunately in our world today, there are always abandoned and unwanted animals. In this story, the Harrison family run the Animal Magic Rescue Centre on their property. It is their anniversary and they are having a celebration and open house. They are hoping to raise money and adopt out animals. They accept all kinds of animals; dogs, cats, rabbits, horses etc. Recently, their neighbour has started a crusade to get them shut down. She does not like the noise and complains that they cause too much traffic. When a soccer star who was supposed to be their special guest cancels at the last minute, Eva and Caleb head over to his house to see if they can convince him to still participate, or at least find out what happens.
This is a cute story about animal lovers and what they can do to help homeless and abandoned animals. It also teaches about animal owner responsibilities in a very easy to understand way. Children will enjoy this book. The illustrations are black and white drawings and spread out throughout the book, but there are enough to keep the reader interested. The chapters are divided out nicely and an early chapter reader will find this book easy to read. I would recommend this book to school and primary/junior classroom libraries.

Cute story of a rescue shelter. The kids will enjoy read the story. POV of daughter, Ella. She and her family have loads of issues the day of their anniversary celebration of their shelter: the neighbor lady hates the shelter, they have a pony with colic, and their local hockey hero is waylayed from an appearance to support the shelter, and worse, the kitten he has adopted from them has been found OUTSIDE of his home and alone! Quick, easy read for 8 and up. Just for disclosure, I did receive a free download of this book from New Galley in exchange for a review, byt my opinion was not influenced by this at all.
We are so happy you've read "The Home-alone Kitten" by Tina Nolan. This book has a beautiful lesson about compassion and caring for others, even our furry friends.
You learned that kindness can make a big difference in someone else's life, just like the characters in the story showed kindness to the little kitten.
You can apply this idea of kindness and compassion in your own life. Whether it's helping a friend, being kind to your sister, or even taking care of a pet, your small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
Keep being the compassionate and caring person you are, our little one.
This early chapter book is appropriate for around 3rd grade children who recently transitioned to chapter books. There are a few illustrations throughout, making it a perfect transition book.
Also great for animal lovers.
Ella and Caleb live at an animal rescue center ran by their parents. They are very excited as a celebrity is supposed to come to the shelter for a celebration. When he cancels, the kids go to his house. They find his kitten all alone. They go into detective mode- is he missing? Is he ok?

My Review of "The Home-alone Kitten"
Sweet, fun read for grades 1-3. With adorable animal characters as well as those of the two legged variety. "The Home-alone Kitten" teaches the reader about the need to rescue and help God's creatures, great and small. With te population of abandoned and lost pets growing daily the Harrison family sets out to raise awareness of the problem and try to find loving homes for some of the animals. when the star attraction disappears before the celebration it looks as though their neighbors might win the fight to shut them down. Follow Ava and Karl set out to find out why Soccer star Jake Adams renigs and where he disappeared to. Can they save the Celebration event and find homes for their guests or will the Center close andthe animals be abandoned again. My rating for "The Home-alone Kitten" is 4 out of 5 stars.
This was quite a sweet book to read, there was a good moral to the story and I was pleased with the ending. Its an easy way to show children just how many animals there out there that need to be adopted from rescue centres too, I see far too many looking in pet shops when there are little ones looking for their forever homes - a nice and pleasant story.
