After escaping retail hell, I trained as a journalist and worked in newspapers and magazines before becoming a drone in the book publishing hive. I worked for Harlequin, The Canadian Book Information Centre, Lester & Orpen Dennys and Cannon Books in various capacities in editorial, publicity and sales. I learned a lot about what not to do. (All of the above companies are dead and gone except, of course, for Harlequin. I didn't kill them. It was suicide.)
I went over the wall again and worked a few miracles in the field of alternative medicine. Then "they sentenced me to 20 years of boredom, for trying to change the system from within." (Identify that quote and we are inextricably, irrevocably friends.)
Writing full-time now, I tell everyone I'm "in Suspense." I hope you read, review and enjoy my books.
It's actually a set of four books in one, and I'm glad they're all together because I"m not usually one to hunt down a whole series at a time. In this case, all four together kept the stories neatly woven together as we meet the various characters. I don't usually pick up robot story novels, but I met the author once and was intrigued.
Most of the story takes place along the southern US and western coast, which I'm not that familiar with personally, so that made it harder for me to picture certain scenes. I liked most of the characters, except Dante who had a weakness I just didn't find charming. But that's okay! LOL! Avery and Elizabeth were very cool, headstrong leaders who I enjoyed following.
I liked the balance between the organics and non-organics (people and robots) and the futuristic view of robots in the future. The weapons used in the war were very interesting, and got just "techie" enough to keep me turning pages without getting lost in too many details.
I took one star off because there are a LOT of moving parts in the end. When I was a bit tired at night or took some time off (March Break) I had to go back to pull it all together again.
I also can see how some people might not embrace the ending, and without giving anything away, I will say that I wasn't expecting that, and I wasn't completely unhappy with the decisions made.
Robot Planet is creative, different, apocalyptic, and humorous in just the right moments. I'd recommend this sci-fi action adventure.
Man created robots, robots created smarter robots, and on and on. Story was ok, it was slow at a couple places, but it was necessary to get from point A to B. I understand.
