Resigned to her new life as a witch and determined to make a success of both that and her business, Jinx has a lot to learn. She sets out to both study her craft and get a real direction for her aunt’s haphazard approach to inventory. Not to mention the fact that she wouldn’t mind getting to know neighboring business owner Chase McGregor a lot better. Although Jinx can call on Aunt Fiona’s ghost for help, the old lady is far too busy living a jet set afterlife to be worried about her niece’s learning curve. That sets Jinx up to make a major mistake and to figure out how to set things right again.

This is the second book of the Jinx Hamilton Mystery Series, which is quickly becoming my all time favorite series. Although each book gives a synopsis of what has happened previously, I highly recommend reading them in order. I have already started book 3, and believe me, you'll want to know everything about the previous books. It has sucked me in. I am sleep deprived :D I don't want to stop reading!!! Read my review of book 1 for more info on the series.
Inheriting her “crazy” Aunt Fiona’s all-and-sundry shop and finding out she also inherited Fiona’s witchy powers threw Jinx for a loop, but she’s been coping fairly well. Until now. Taking things in stride has given Jinx a big head and now she’s all set to do some stupid shit. Which she does. Now, she has to fix things before the world figures out magic is a real thing.
I enjoyed book one enough to continue with book two, but I have to say the bloom is off the rose. Jinx does something really stupid because she thinks, after only a month and some internet research on some sketchy sites, that she’s got a handle on her witchy powers. Um, no. She has a magical shop for fuck’s sake! I would have been bugging the shit out of Myrtle for answers or to be pointed to the proper research materials. But no. She’s an idiot who then compounds her stupidity yet again later in the book. And again. I’m done. I cannot read a book where the main character is a moron. Plus, other characters are keeping secrets from Jinx when she really needs to know this shit. For realz. Great concept. Lame MC. Poor plot.
This is one of those books that I wish we could have half star ratings for. It is more of a 3.5 but not quite a 4 star book. I loved the characters and the story line. It is a fun story and I will be adding this series to my TBR. However, I may not get to it for a while unless they fill a challenge because I have a lot more series that I want to read first.
Jinx Hamilton is becoming comfortable with her newly discovered powers – talking to ghosts, the ability to move things just by thinking about it, being able to get visions from touching something – and with being a business owner of a store that has a personality all its own. An outbreak of restless, angry ghosts who refuse to stay where they belong, and an angrier, vengeful sorceress with a grudge to settle plague Jinx even more than the store’s refusal to be organized. One of the restless ghosts is claiming he was murdered, and the bulk of them are intent on resuming their former lives because they don’t know they’re dead. This is bad for Jinx, but good for the town of Briar Hollow, NC, because it’s increasing tourism and bringing new life to the town square.
I like my paranormal plausible, or at least not way into the woo-woo camp, and as I feared, book 2 was almost too much to finish (vengeful sorceress, really? I mean, I can see helping ghosts to move on, and who doesn’t want a house brownie to do their bidding, but a vindictive sorceress was pressing the edge of my tolerance level).
But, I am hooked by Jinx, her bff, the hot shoemaker next door, the Confederate military man ghost, Jinx’s four cats, the rat that lives in the storeroom, and the store itself, so I kept reading. Setting aside my annoyance with the vengeful sorceress angle, the rest of the book was just as satisfying as book 1. The plot is fast-paced, the storyline entertaining and exciting, and the ending was a surprise. I will be picking up book 3 in the series.
I am totally enjoying this series. Thanks Carin! Never a dull moment. Ms. Harper is not long winded which I appreciate. Introduction of new characters has progressed nicely. Looking forward to book 3
Entertaining and enjoyable sequel to the first book. I particularly enjoy the fact that the main relationship in the series so far is between the protagonist and her best friend, Tori. The voice is humorously dry and makes this one a page-turning pleasure.
Awesome series! I can't put this down. Work is interfering with my reading! LOL I usually don't like mysteries but this is really good in my mind. Maybe not the most intricate of mysteries but perfect for me.
Humor in urban fantasy can be a joy. And much of this book just makes me smile. Sign me up as a fellow crazy cat witch and you have a match made in heaven. The combination of Appalachian magic, Cherokee legends and Celtic heritage and you knock the ball out of the park.
I just ordered the whole series after finishing this volume. It is a guilty pleasure I am unashamedly claiming as mine own. Darby, please send a cousin to come enjoy my home. I promise a variety of garments, chocolates, lots of books and tv.
As Jinx struggles to come to terms with her new powers, and Aunt Fiona is far too busy enjoying her afterlife, a little online research creates a whole new problem for Jinx and Tori.
Determined to help the ghosts trapped in the cemetery Jinx experiments with a spell to release them. Unfortunately she releases far more than she could ever have anticipated, waking the whole cemetery and releasing a new friend, Darby a brownie, from his position guarding Knasagowa, a Cherokee witch.
Free to leave the graveyard the ghosts cause mayhem in Briar Hollow as their frustration and anger allows them to begin to manifest. Beau Longthorne does his best to help but it's going to take an even bigger revelation to work out how they can fix the problem.
When the truth about why Knasagowa was bound to her grave comes out Jinx has to face up to a bigger enemy than she could ever imagine, an ever increasing world of magic and both she and Tori will learn more about their ancestors and family secrets.
Get thoroughly drawn into the world of Briar Hollow and a cast of characters that are quirky, funny and captivating.
The second book in the Jinx Hamilton series find our newly discovered witch trying to learn how to use her newly found powers by searching the internet; unfortunately, she winds up raising all the ghosts from the town cemetery, including a dangerous an evil sorceress that, we will find out, has a history with Jinx's family.
Most of the remaining story has to do with Jinx's efforts to return the ghosts to their graves and ban the sorceress back to her resting place.
Along the way, we get a more thorough understanding of the history of Jinx's magical family, as well as the other characters in the story, including Myrtle, the spirit of the store; her boyfriend, Chase; and here BFF, Tori.
In short, if you enjoyed Witch At Heart, this is a nice continuation and sets up the scenario for the next book.
Mix together Cherokee and Celtic legends with a bit of Appalachian magic, and you get quite a summer for Jinx & Tori. Jinx is learning more about her powers, and Myrtle manifests as a human to pitch in with her magical education. Aunt Fiona flits in and out, which frustrates Jinx, but Fiona is keeping closer tabs on Jinx than she realizes. And Tori’s apartment in the back of the shop gets finished, which is handy for the duo. Jinx accidentally releases an evil spirit that Jinx’s great-something-grandparents locked down years ago, which ends up releasing all the ghosts in the cemetery and a little Brownie, Darby, who’s rather helpful. Said ghosts run around town while Beau, Myrtle, Darby, Jinx, and Tori work on a way to get them back to ‘normal.’ Meanwhile, is Chase, her cobbler neighbor, moreapt to believe her magical powers than Jinx gives him credit for?
While I was totally enchanted with the first book, I found in this second instalment in Jinx's story a somewhat jumbled mix of magical characters, some utterly charming and some surplus to requirements and dragging the tale back to Middle Earth, so to speak. Still the same quirky, machine-gun-paced and pop-culture-referenced conversations between the BFFs which are truly enjoyable, but too many characters requiring far too much back story to keep my eyes from rolling back in my head too often. Well plotted, however, and well written with some of the support characters fleshed out (hehe) nicely.
Rounding up from 2.5 since I like the characters. Book 1 was better for me because I was ok with people saying they needed to give Jinx time to acclimate before telling her what is going on. HOWEVER, we are now (supposedly) a couple months (??) into Jinx's Witchy Coming Out and people are still holding back all the info she needs to succeed. Along with that, she is so totally frustrated she is jumping into Internet spells and causing havoc in town. No one to blame but those who are holding out on her. Between all the "secrets" and Jinx's TSTL moments I'm losing interest in the series. Maybe one more book in a bit to see if this pattern changes, sadly no rush.
Well, this book is even better than the first. Jinx is learning so much more about her powers. I can't say too much with out giving away the surprise, but there is so much more information about the other characters in Jinxs life that comes out ...but she doesn't know yet! However, her and her bff Tori, find out why they are so close..it's not just a coincidence . They way the author lets us know these surprises is written so well..it definitely sets the stage for the next book and I can't wait to read it.!!!
I couldn't put It down. I laughed and cried. First book was so different from what I normally read. It was very moving, I cried. The second was funny and the history of the Scots and the Indians was very informative, to say the least. Oh course, you are keeping me up at all hours of the 🌙 and 🌞 keep these great books coming, my book club loves them. We are all very busy in our jobs and families. And your books are the perfect read to discuss with wine, snacks and a hearty laugh and cry.
What an Adventureous cozey mystery vibrant caracters witchy, fury, spirited and more. Pandemonium accures when Jinx trys to do a simple spell of kindness. Knew secrets unfold and new friendships are made enemies pop up and thier towns future may changes forever, good or bad only time can tell you that .Juliette Harper is a writer of high caliber that draws you into her mystery's with a few short words then keeps you enthralled through out.Aquier a copy of "Witch at Odds" so you yourself can enjoy reading it as much as I have. Kat
Jinx definitely got a bit over confident in this one. While trying to release her ghost friends from the cemetery, armed with a spell from the internet, she accidentally raised an entire cemetery of ghosts. And one evil sorceress. On the plus side, she now has help from Beau, the "mayor" of the cemetery ghosts, who is able to step outside of the cemetery for the first time since he was buried. Also a brownie, who was set to guard against any evil person releasing the trapped sorceress. And of course, Tori, who is everything required in a BFF.
A definite improvement over the first book. There’s a lot more going on - drama, mystery, and thrills! For the first time we see narration from other characters’ points of view, which is interesting and helps to further deepen the plot. All in all, I was right about this series. Glad I have the whole series to work through, I will say that much!
Pours! Jinx has her hands more than full with this romp through the graves of the South. . . and of Scotland . . . and a nice Cherokee witch . . . and just what IS Chase up to anyway? And the colonel? And the traditional Scottish brownie? What is going on? Read it.
With tornado sirens going off constantly all around me, i must confess that I couldn’t reading this clever and funny book. It has been a really long time since I have laughed so hard at a book. Harper is a genius with her extraordinary imagination, and her readers are lucky that she shares her stories with us.
The idea of a store with a spirit was the original draw to the book. Now there are so many characters that are connected mystically that I cannot wait to get to book 3.
The pace is excellent, the characters growing with every page, and the story becomes more complex as each chapter passes. Magical creatures, surprises, tender moments and chilling ones. One problem solved, another appears. Another must read!
Book 1 is good and book 2 is good as well. It flows well from the first and I just bought the third installment. For an easy nice read buy book one and then this one. Two thumbs up.
I'm hooked on this Series. Book 1 was just so-so but book 2 has definitely brought me into Jinx and Tori's magical world and "wet my appetite" for what happens next. Ready for book 3 !!
I chose 5 stars because that's how good the book is.I recommend it to anyone that likes light hearted witch books. Very well written.Im on book 3 now.I can't seem to put the books down.
Jinx does an oops and releases all the spirits the good, bad, and very scary. As the days go on she learns more about her magic and makes new friends to help her fix the oops. Enjoy
Another great read. Love those characters. Usually after reading the second book I am sick of the store because the Authort has said the same thing over again using different people .
I really enjoyed this book. I love these light-hearted mysteries. There is fun, action, humor, and suspense. A lot of emphasis is placed on the value of true friendship. I highly recommend this book and I'm looking forward to reading the next one.
