Private Investigator Claire DeNardo, visits her Aunt Lena's cafe, Cannoli's, and discovers a romance brewing between her aunt and a new customer. Claire's surmises that her aunt's new boyfriend is lying about his identity prove solid when he's found murdered at the cafe. Claire ignores the warning of Police Detective Brian Corrigan and delves into the dead man's life. In the process she realizes her aunt may unwittingly possess what the killer wants. And it's not her tiramisu recipe.
Carole is the author of the new cozy mystery series, The Terrified Detective. She has also written a number of stories for Chicken Soup for the Soul and other similar anthologies. She's published several book of short stories. She currently lives in Dallas, Tx.
This is a mildly entertaining cozy, but not one of my favorites. The female PI just doesn't seem to know when to back off (although I get that her aunt being kidnapped is a big motivator).
I didn't read the first book in the series, but I will surely do so now that I've read book 2 (and I'm gonna check out book 3). I really enjoyed this book. Claire is a very likable person and interesting. I like her relationship with her father, and her realness about digging in her heels when it comes to Brian. Who would listen to a guy who never called anyway? Claire may have inherited this PI Agency but she's a remarkably strong woman, strong-willed and a grand PI. Look forward to more work by Fowkes, including this entire series.
Claire is at it again but this time her dad is worried about a new guy her aunt is seeing. She visits her Aunt Lena's cafe, Cannoli's, and discovers a romance brewing between her aunt and a new customer. Her dad must be right this guy is not looking like a real gentleman.
When the man is shot inter aunt cafe she ignores the warning of Police Detective Brian Corrigan gave her. Why shouldn’t she he’s been a jerk since they went out. Can she solve this before he aunt got down for he murder?
I love Claire she is witty and always finds trouble no matter where she goes. With her friend and co-worker Ed they will do what they have to, to keep her safe and Ed might just be falling for Aunt Lena.
So much fun watching everyone take care of each other and try and stay out of trouble. The story will keep you hopping until the end. A fun series to read.
I didn't read the first book in this series and to be honest I doubt that I'll go back to look for it. This book was just OK for me.
My biggest pet peeve was that the timing was all off. At one point you'd read that Detective Corrigan is standing with Claire, then suddenly he's at the police station, and within what seems like only minutes he's back at her side in another location. And even though she treats him pretty badly he's constantly at her beck and call, day or night.
I also found the story around the aunt slightly too exaggerated for my tastes. Why would a woman who's only been on a couple of dates with someone be so broken up about what happened? And why was Claire blaming herself for the whole situation when it was clearly her Aunt Lena who shouldn't have jumped at the first man who asked her out (she actually says she fell for him for this very reason)?!?!?
I think cozy mystery's are a lot more difficult to write than people think. You have to find a way to strike the perfect balance between people so likeable that you wish they were part of your family in real life, and people you don't mind seeing knocked off. I think I'll stick to the tried and true books from Heather Blake~
Claire is still working at the PI business, but this time it's personal. Her Aunt Lena is enamored with a new customer, and Claire's father is worried. Something doesn't jive. About the same time Claire determines Joe has no history, he ends up dead and somebody is looking for something and thinks Aunt Lena or Claire have it. As always, Brian tells her to leave the murder to the police, but the stakes are too high. Claire's associate Ed and nice looking Alex add to the complications.
This is a fun weekend read in the hammock or at the beach - the plot is well developed and there are lots of twists to keep it interesting. The downside? I just realized the third in the series is out - BAKE ME A MURDER ... one off the TBR list and I add another!
Once again Claire has a murder to solve, but this time it is of a man her Aunt Lena was beginning to date. When it turns out he has mob ties, and there is another murder, it becomes personal because Aunt Lena is kidnapped.
I am impressed again in this book with a heroine who even when scared faces whatever has to be done without whining. Also she does it without needing a gaggle of friends to hold her hand, yet with enough brains to ask for help from the yummy police detective, er most of the time at least!
Fast paced with thrills every step of the way, author Carole Fowkes has written another great mystery with family at the core of the story. It was almost too exciting near the end as Claire managed to keep herself and her Aunt safe, but just barely. Excellent book and series!
Another good read with plenty of action and dead bodies although I must admit that I prefer books where you have to guess the culprit. When her aunt finds a new love interest, her dad asks her to research the man. Is he really as nice as her aunt thinks? Her search leads nowhere and the fact that he is shot in her aunt's bakery just solidifies the fact that there is something off about him. She is surprised when Ed asks her to put in a good word for him to her aunt. Unsurprisingly the dead man was actually part of the mob. Dead bodies, threatening phones calls, threatening messages, an item that everyone seems to want but cannot find, a kidnapping and a deadline for her to had the missing item over (even though she hasn't a clue were it is or even what it is) make this a good read. Especially when you add in a handsome detective and a good looking nephew of the mob boss.
A young woman stumbles onto a career as a private investigator doing menial tasks. Her boss dies and leaves the operation to her. Before she intends, cases become much more serious. Her aunt unintentionally dates a gangster, who is murdered in her bakery for information he carried on a flashdrive. His killers capture her aunt as ransom, demanding that the pi finds the flashdrive. Clueless, she stumbles from one frightening moment to the next, as she desperately tries to secure her aunt's safe release. A light quick amusing read.
Another astounding performance of dramatic writing given by author Carole Fawkes.Claire's aunt Lena has been kidnapped following the murder of a client slash acquaintance in her bake shop. The man has left something behind that dangerous men want. Can Claire discover what needs to found before Aunt Lena befalls the same deadly fait as the man in the bake shop before time runs out. Clare was wondering because she was a PI that she was responsible for her relatives poor choice in dating. Her father says he is hiding something How could she tell her aunt that Larry has no past, when she tried to do a background check on him. Now her aunt is calling, someone killed him at her restaurant. The dialog was funny, the characters sound quirky. The description especially of her aunt is priceless.I enjoyed reading.
Once I got into this story, I enjoyed it. But I have read alot of female PI mysteries and some of these women are among the stupidist on the planet. This was one of them. They get drunk with power and are so sure they are smarter than the police and everyone else trying to solve the crime, but they just create more problems and don't make women look very smart. But they are fun to read anyway.
Well, I must say that timid Claire is probably no more after this book. She inadvertently ends up mixed in with mobsters and back hand deal galore. It’s a crazy ride with crazy bad guys and the only thing standing between them and her aunt, Lena, is a timid as a mouse PI who just might have grown up this time.
As good as the first book! I enjoyed the mix of feisty and human error the main character showed. She is not inhumanly brave or impossibly good at what she does. She is more real seeming due to that.
Claire’s Aunt Lena is seeing a guy named Larry they are to have their first date when Larry is shot in the back at her aunt’s place Cannoli’s. A really good mystery as to why larry was killed and what is everyone looking for and where is it.
I really liked the way this book was written. I couldn't wait to see what our girl was going to get herself into next, and we knew she would. I was worried about her Aunt right up to the end. Great book. Good read.
Claire is a private investigator that is afraid of big crimes but gets involved in one involving the mob and her aunt that's been kidnapped. Fast and fun read! Very entertaining.
Charming. You know how some female detectives are kick butt warriors? Claire isn't like that. Good thing the author titled this series as the "terrified" detective. Yep. She is one scaredy cat. Still, she has a good adventure and solves a crime. An easy read with charming characters.
This is a wonderful cleverly written story. It has great characters and an interesting plot. I loved her how the main character describes the story. The author won’t disappoint!
This was such a great story. It just kept you rooting for the detective! She was hilarious, but smart! Even when she thought things were not going her way, they turned out just fine.
Claire and gangsters, make for a good ride.. Now she has two interested guys, a cop and a gngster's nephew. Confusion for her and jealousy makes life so much fun.
I paged thru a good chunk of this one because it was just too hard to stay up with who was where when. I liked a lot of the characters but the story was pretty convoluted and hard to follow and the PI lead seemed pretty immature in some ways. Not for me.
Looking for a some humor mixed with mystery? The Terrified Detective is just what you need. Carole Fowkes does a great job of telling the story and keeping the reader engaged.
she is a recovery agent and her aunt runs a bakery. a man her aunt wanted to date was killed in the shop. she was told by the police to not get involved, but her dad asked her to look into it for her aunt. she is having money issues as the business is not doing well

This book was fun to read and very well written. The characters become friends and enemies along the way. The plot keeps you guessing and wanting more. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a good book to escape life a while.
Loved the interaction of the players. Showed the importance of love for the family. The interplay of the two men for her protection was hilarious at times.
