Kai Eto may look like a squeaky clean kid, but the Greater Kanto Narcotics Control Division's new investigator hides a violent alter ego and a dangerous past. Together with his stoic partner Hal Kurabayashi, Kai is assigned to track down and stop the distribution of a dangerous new drug--Dragon Speed.
Hal survives an assassination attempt, but it seems he may not have been the target. Clues point to the "switch," but no one seems to know just what that means. The Ryugen, however, do know something and use that knowledge to entrap Kai and flip his switch.
Hal finds himself in the hospital again, thanks to the same villain who put him there in an earlier book. He’s ready to check himself out early (again) only this time, Kai’s ready for him. Hal may terrify Shiba and the doctor, disregard the nurses, but he’s no match for Kai’s exuberant concern. The good news is his injuries aren’t too severe. The bad news is the reason for that is the Ryugan has plans for him. They have plans for Kai, too, whom appears to be the key for them as well as Hal, regarding the ‘switch’.
Lots of characters developed in this volume, including the main villain, who might feel something like affection for his ‘slave’. Not that the slave isn’t included in his ruthless games, along with Kai, Hal, and his hapless pawn, Tsukiyuki. Isobe appeared to headed into serious trouble with that pawn, only to show he was a lot more capable than he looks. Miyoshi, Ibu, Katsuragi, and Tachibana got to do some serious detecting and decoding, showing what they’re capable of as a team. Shiba revealed just how much rage he’s holding back over Takei’s injuries while Hal and Kai’s personal mysteries collided, deepening their relationship during the drama the Ryugan trap them within. Kajiyama and Hiki got extra development as characters as well, including a side story about the two of them when they were younger.
Not that it was all intrigue and darkness. A side story of levity was included in which a bloodstained, err, chocolate stained Mari is thwarted in another attempt to show her affection by fate (and Hal) while everyone in the office finds themselves facing a new challenge, Valentine’s Day.
Character and plot alike intensified, reaching a new level in which no one was neglected. For the added level of mystery and excitement of the storyline, the enrichment of the characters and the yaoi potential, conveying it all within the darkly beautiful style of this series, this gets five stars.
