ग्यारहवें भारतीय ज्ञानपीठ पुरस्कार के विजेता प्रसिद्ध तमिल साहित्यकार श्री पी बी अखिलाण्डम साहित्य में 'अखिलन' के नाम से विख्यात है। 'अखिलन' का जन्म तिरुचिरापल्ली जिले के एक छोटे-से नगर फेरुलूर में 7 फरवरी, 1923 को हुआ। मेट्रीकुलेशन करते-करते यह सम्पूर्ण रूप से देश के स्वतन्त्रता संग्राम में जा कूदे, फिर अन्त में स्वयं भी कारावासी हुए। अखिलन की रचनाएँ, उपन्यास भी, कहानियों भी विभिन्न मा/तीय भाषाओं से तो सर्वाधिक अनूदित और प्रकाशित हुई ही है, कई विदेशी भाषाओं में भी उनका अनुवाद हुआ है। साहित्य अकादमी ने उन्हें 'वेंगेयन मनिदन' शीर्षक उपन्यास के लिए 1964 में पुरस्कृत किया। ज्ञानपीठपुरस्कार विजेता उपन्यास 'चित्तिरप्पावै' स्वयं लेखक के विचार में ही नहीं, पारखियों की दृष्टि में भी उनकी सर्वश्रेष्ठ रचना है।

About the author

Akilan (Tamil: அகிலன்) was a Tamil author noted for his realistic and creative writing style. Akilan was a freedom fighter, novelist, short-story writer, journalist, satirist, travel writer, playwright, script-writer, orator and critic.He is also a children's novelist.

Early life

Akilan was the pen name of Akilandam, who was born on 27 June at Perungalore . He spent his childhood in a small hamlet called Perungalore near Pudukottai. His father Vaithiya Lingam Pillai was an accounts officer and adored his only son Akilan very much. Unfortunately, the boy lost his loving father at an early age. But his mother Amirthammal was a loving person, and being a creative person herself, she moulded her son into a writer.
The author was attracted by Gandhian philosophy during his school days and he discontinued his college education at Pudukotai to join the freedom struggle. Later, after Indian independence, he joined the Railway Mail Service, after which he joined the AIR (All India Radio) and became a full fledged writer. His stories began to appear mostly in small magazines.

Awards won

In 1975 the novel Chitra pavai (சித்திர பாவை) won the prestigious Jnanpith Award.[1] This work of his has been translated in all Indian languages.In 1963 his historical novel Vengayin Mainthan (வேங்கையின் மைந்தன்) was awarded by Sahithya academy of Govt of India. Engepogirome a peculiar socio-political novel of his, won the Raja sir annamalai award in 1975. His children's book Kanana kannan won the special prize given by Tamil Nadu educational department. The author has written about 45 titles, most of which have been translated in all Indian state languages. Apart from this his works has been translated in other foreign languages such as English, German, Czech, Russian, Polish, Chinese, and Malay.

Historical novels

Vengayin maindan This is one of the famous works of Akilan, read by thousands and thousands of Tamilian's all over the globe. This historical fiction captures the history of chola dynasty. This book was dramatized by Late.Mr.Shivaji Ganesan on stage and was a huge hit.

In this novel, Akilan gives insight about the life and achievement of the great Rajendra Chola who was a Vengaiyin Maindhan to the rest of the world.[1] RajendraCholan is the son of Rajaraja Cholan and his period can be referred as the height of Tamil empire in art, literature and administration. He captured many countries including Indonesia (Kadaaram), Sri Lanka, Malaysia, southern and eastern coastal parts of India. He lived around 1010 AD and his dynasty had many business relationships with foreign countries. This novel depicts his victory over Kadaaram and the building of new city Gangaikonda Cholapuram upon his victory over northern part of India. The newly built temple and the city internally had so many architectural designs for war-time and peace activities. Along conquering the nations, Ilango Vel conquered the hearts of beautiful girls Arulmozhi and Rohini. Their love and affection was depicted in simple yet powerful words by Akilan. Vandhiya Thevan appears in this novel as an elderly counselor, who guides Rajendra Cholan in war and administration. Because of the narration and depiction of historic facts during Chola period using proper language there is no wonder this novel received the Sakithya Academy Award from Government of India. தனக்கு கட்டாயமாக ஒரு முத்தம் கொடுக்கப்பட்டதால் யார் மீது காதல் இருந்ததோ அவனை(அண்ணாமலை) கைவிட்டு இந்த துஷ்டனை(மாணிக்கம்) திருமணம் செய்து கொள்ள முடிவு எடுக்கிறாள் ஆனந்தி. இந்தக்குழந்தைக்கு (அண்ணாமலை) எப்படி எச்சில் பட்ட பழத்தை கொடுப்பேன் என்று கண்ணீர் வேறு. இங்கே பழம் ஆனந்தியின் உதடாம்.

அங்கேயே பெரிய அதிர்ச்சி அடைந்து இந்த "ஞானபீட" பரிசு பெற்ற நாவலை நிறுத்திக்கொள்ளலாம் என்று நினைத்தேன். இந்த நாவல் ஜெயகாந்தனின் அக்னிப்பிரவேசம் வந்த அதே 1968ல் எழுதப்பட்டு இருப்பது இன்னும் அதிர்ச்சி. அக்னிப்பிரவேசத்தில் "அசிங்கத்தை மிதித்துவிட்டால் காலை கழுவிக்கொண்டு போய்க்கொண்டே இருக்க வேண்டுமோ இல்லையா ! காலை வெட்டிவிட தேவை இல்லை" என்று சொல்லி இருப்பார் ஜே.கே.

சரி இது நாட்டாமை வன்புணர்வு செய்தவனே பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பெண்ணை திருமணம் செய்து கொள்ளவேண்டும் என்று நீதி சொல்லிய காலத்திற்கு முற்றப்பட்டது என்றதால் நான் தொடர்ந்து படித்தேன். ஒரு கட்டத்தில் ஆனந்தி தான் செய்ததது தவறு என்று உணர்கிறாள். அப்பாடா என்று இருந்தது.

சுந்தரி தற்கொலை செய்து கொள்கிறாள். அவள் தரப்பில் இருந்து எந்த versionம் இல்லை, அவள் ஏன் இப்படி ஆனால் என்று தீவிர ஆய்வும் இல்லை, வேறும் தந்தையின் பாசம் இந்த அளவுக்கு அவளை வில்லி ஆக்க முடியுமா?

ஆனாலும் கதை ஒரு Page-Turner. இதற்க்கு ஞானபீட பரிசு எல்லாம் உச்சகட்ட அரசியல்தான்.

உலகத்ததில் இரண்டு விதமான மனிதர்கள் இருக்கிறார்கள். இந்த சமூகம் வகுத்த வாழ்க்கைக்குள் பொருந்த இயந்திரம் போல் ஓடிக்கொண்டிருப்பது ஒரு விதம். மற்றொரு ரகம் கலை கவிதைகளில் ஆர்வம் கொண்டு இயற்க்கையோடு ஒன்றி எளிமையாக வாழ்பவர்கள். இந்த கதை அவ்விரு வர்கத்திற்கும் நடக்கும் போராட்டம் தான்.

சிறுவயதில் இருந்தே ஓவியம் வரையும் திறன் பெற்றவன் அண்ணாமலை. அவனுக்கு பயிற்ச்சி அளிக்கும் கலைஞரின் மகள் ஆனந்தி. கலை ஆர்வம் கொண்ட இருவரும் காதலிக்கின்றனர் ஆனால் மனம்விட்டு சொல்லிக் கொண்டதில்லை. சூழ்நிலை காரணமாக இருவரும் வேறொருவரைத் திருமணம் செய்து கொள்கிறார்கள். இருவரும் தமது இல்வாழ்வில் அனுபவிக்கும் சித்திரவதை நம்மையே சோகத்தில் ஆழ்த்திவிடும். இறுதியில் அவர்களது வாழ்வு என்ன ஆனது என்பது தான் கதை.

தான் ஏமாற்றப் படுவது தெரியாமல் அனைத்தையும் பறிகொடுத்திடும் கதாநாயகன். கலாச்சாரம் பண்பாடு என்று தன் வாழ்க்கையை தொலைக்கும் கதாநாயகி. என்னால் இவர்களை ரசிக்க இயலவில்லை. மாறாக அவர்கள் மீது அதீத கோபம் தான் ஏற்பட்டது. ‘Money heist’ வலைதொடரில் ‘Arturo’ எப்படியோ, அதுபோல் தான் ஆனந்தியின் கணவன் மாணிக்கம். இவனைப் போன்ற இளிவான மனிதர்கள் இந்த உலகத்தில் நம்மிடையே வாழ்ந்து கொண்டுதான் இருக்கிறார்கள்.

‘கயல்விழி’ மற்றும் ‘வேங்கையின் மைந்தன்’ வாசித்ததும் நான் முடிவு செய்துவிட்டேன், திரு அகிலன் தான் எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்த எழுத்தாளர் என்று. காதல் நிரம்பி வழிந்தோட ஆரம்பித்த கதை, முதல் பாகத்தின் இறுதியில் என்னை வேதனைக்குள்ளாக்கியதும் அகிலன் இப்படி ஏமாற்றிவிட்டாரே என்று நொந்து கொண்டேன். ஆனால் கதையின் முடிவை வாசிக்கையில் தான் புலப்பட்டது இப்படைப்புக்கு ஏன் ஞானபீடம் பரிசளிக்கப்பட்டது என்று. அகிலன் ஒப்பற்ற எழுத்தாளர் என்று மற்றுமொருமுறை உணர்ந்தேன்.

This novel was published in 1968 if I am right. But accurately giving current city life and it's pathetic way of life. Great write and characterization of each characters. It's novel portraying life of an artist Annamalai. The enmity between Annamalai and Manikkam. The untold love between him and Anandhi. Saradha a strange character known for true friendship. Almost all characters including smaller ones were thoroughly superb and more over close to reality. Very nice narration and kudos to Akilan!

Old book but that story still telling the current scenario . How selfish people behave and innocent people lives in that circumstances,the way narration is good . I hated the innocent Annamalai because of him how he missed his love . Sometime I got angry on writer why he didn't give any punishment to Manickam?
