About the author

Born in 1984 in Santhal Paragana, a remote area of ​​Jharkhand, Nilotpal Mrinal has already established himself among the readers and literary intellectuals with his first novel 'Dark Horse'. Nilotpal, originally hails from Bihar, is also active in political and social activities for the last several years after completing his education from St. Xavier's College, Ranchi. Along with playing a special role in student movements, Mrinal has already reached to TV platform in the field of folk music. These days, he's also trying his luck in poet-concerts and gaining popularity.

There are books which make you nostalgic and take you to memory trips and make you re-live the time as if you are one of the characters in the story. Dark Horse, debut novel of Nilotpal Mrinal, is one such story. It’s story of aspirations, joy, struggle, desperation, frustration, despair, heart breaks,fear, success and resolute to prove oneself. The story is of civil service preparation and how students come from different walks of life and different places of India to Delhi specially Mukherjee Nagar with dreams of becoming IAS, IPS face with stark reality of life. The protagonist is Santosh who is from Bhagalpur district of Bihar and who comes to Delhi for fulfilling his dreams. This story shows how students deviate from their path, some for ever and some refocus their aim and achieve their dreams. It also chronicles the struggle of students in the bewildered land of Mukherjee nagar from choosing civil optionals to pressure of higher rents, shrewd friends ( who are there just to grab notes from you ) money seeker landlords, selfish relatives ( who feel that now as you are in Delhi so you can act like a free guide for their Delhi visit) and most importantly the luck factor in the examination . All in all its a must read for any person who has gone through civil service examination and must for Hindi Belt aspirant. Giving 5/5 for this wonderful read.

आप इस पुस्तक के माध्यम से मुखर्जी नगर में IAS की तैयारी करने वाले प्रत्याशियों के संघर्ष चक्र से गुजरते हैं। घर छूटना, नए माहौल में आराम ढूंढना, नए लोगों से जीवन साझा करना और इन सब के बीच अपनी तैयारी करते रहना - इस पुस्तक में आप भी इन चरणों की भावनाओं से वाकिफ होते हैं। निजी जीवन की मुश्किलों और सांसारिक जीवन में IAS जैसा ऊंचा ओहदा पाने के संघर्ष का वास्तविक चित्रण इस पुस्तक के सभी किरदारों के साथ किया गया है।

Author depicts everything precisely..I felt like this is my story although it is not..

Story all about IAS preparation in Mukherji nagar,how everyone from different cities of India comes to Delhi to become an IAS officer..
First book of Nilotpal Mrinal but he depicts so well of every little bit thing that is how students from different backgrounds comes to Delhi to realise their dream...And people who often ignore the person most it suddenly comes as a brightest..It amazed everyone with their result..
The author said that one is "DARK HORSE"..

कथाकार शुरू में ही स्वीकार कर लेते हैं कि पुस्तक साहित्यिक तरीकों पर फिट नहीं बैठती, ये उनकी ईमानदारी है।
पुस्तक ने कुछ संवेदन मुद्दों को छुआ है जैसे हिंदी अंग्रेजी मीडियम के बीच की खिटपिट, गांधीजी का योगदान, शराब/सिगरेट को सार्वजनिक रूप से पीकर खुद को मॉडर्न मानना आदि।
लेकिन पुस्तक के पात्र कभी आते हैं कभी चले जाते हैं। मुख्य पात्र पर कहानी नहीं टिकी रह पाती।
कुछ स्थानों पर अभद्र भाषा का प्रयोग है जो बिल्कुल आवश्यक नहीं था।
कहानी कहानी न होकर व्यक्तिगत अनुभव लगता है।
यूपीएससी अभ्यर्थी पुस्तक को पसंद कर सकते हैं लेकिन दिल्ली में और भी बहुत कुछ है जो पुस्तक से अलग है।
कोचिंग शुरू होने तक के समय को बहुत पन्नों में कवर किया है लेकिन फिर प्री मैंस को जल्दी में पूरा कर दिया लगता है।
पुस्तक का युवाओं में बहुत नाम है सो उम्मीदें ज्यादा थीं। पुस्तक उम्मीदों से बहुत नीचे रह जाती है।

It was a good tour down the lanes of Mukherjee Nagar where thousands of civil services aspirants prepare for many years to get their dreams materialized. Setting up the environment, description of the daily lifestyle and multitude of characters having different degrees of complexities, all of this makes this book feel like personal documentation of one's own journey through hostel days. From how daunting the competitiveness can be in such landscapes to the millions of hopes pinned on their shoulders to their spontaneous but unrealistic expectations from the opposite sex, this book has laid down the typical narrative of one of the largest coaching hubs of India with simplicity and honesty.

Reading this book was due for a very very long time as was intrigued not by the premise of the novel but by the craft of the author. And rightly so. It was the debut novel of Nilotpal back in 2015 and won Sahitya Academy Yuva Puraskaar a year later. It is considered to have sold over 1 Million copies and for reasons that literature should be sold and bought.

Dark Horse is not a story of extraordinary. It is a story of the very ordinary- You and I and all those who we have seen, felt, touched, absorbed. It is the story of almost everyone who walks into the magical realm of Mukherjee Nagar/Delhi to become ‘something’. Yes there is a cost to everything and even this rat race has a cost, immense cost, but human race is such that it runs after a small speck of hope, even if surrounded by doom and despair. And by the time they realise that not every dream is worth pursuing, it is soon late. Being someone who has walked down that path, I would say, as book also rightly summarises, changing the course while one still can, is as important as staying true to the course. Just like Jonathan Livingston Seagull I guess.

This book rekindles the hope in contemporary Hindi literature and atleast to me is like a beacon of hope that there are few who are standing strong with Hindi and enriching it. Polite Applause!

Strongly recommended for the craftsman that Nilotpal is.

This acclaimed book is based on the lives of IAS aspirants from northern states in Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar. While the novel is well-structured it would have rated higher if the writing style was more elegant. Sometimes it just felt forced.
Secondly, while the tone was relatively light, it could also have done with more humour.

कई उतर चढ़ाव के साथ बेहतरीन लिखी गई है यह किताब, इमोशन सपने, संस्कार,मस्ती सब कुछ ज़िंदगी की मुट्ठी में नीलोत्पल ने समेट दिया। अच्छी बात है सफलता और असफलता दोनों बेहतरीन तरह से लेखन में इवेंट और टूल के ज़रिये लिखा गया है। हर एक कैरेक्टर के भाव के साथ पाठक को बहते रहने में लेखक का बड़ा योगदान होता है।

कई साल से इस किताब को दरियागंज केदुकानों में बिकते देखता था तो लगता था पढ़ेंगे लेकिन आज जब पढ़ा तो लगा लेट हो गया पढ़ने में थोड़ा जल्दी पढ़ना था। इस किताब ने कई बड़ी बात को आसानी से कह दिया है जैसे हिंदी और इंग्लिश या भाषा का रिप्रजेंटेशन क्या है एजुकेशन क्या है या गांधी को कैसे देखते है लोग सिर्फ एक पैरा में बेहतरीन लिखा गया है।

क़िस्मत और मेहनत की ज़बरदस्त लड़ाई देखने को मिलती है,चरित्र सपने के ज़रिए अपने आप से जूझते हुए डार्क हॉर्स की तरह ख़ुद को तब्दील होते देख पाते है। सिविल सर्वेंट ऐस्पिरेंट पर अच्छी लिखी हुई किताब है जो सिर्फ़ करैक्टर पर नहीं दिल्ली की मुखर्जी नगर कोचिंग के धंधे और समाज को बेहतर तरह से दर्शाता है।

शुरुआत में बस ठीक-ठाक लगा,लेकिन बीच मे पहुँचकर कहानी जैसे ही रौ में आती है, मजा आने लगता है। मैं कभी तैयारी करने के लिए किसी शहर नही जा सका। औकात से बाहर की बात थी! लेकिन नौकरी हासिल की, संघर्ष करके। पहले और नौकरी के बाद में भी कई बार सिविल सर्विसेज की परीक्षा में बैठा, लेकिन नही हुआ। इस तरह, मैं नॉवेल के किरदारों से तदात्मिकरण (आइडेंटिफिकेशन) कर सकता हूँ।

इस किताब की कहानी ऐसे लोगों की है जो समाज मे वर्षों से चली आ रही आईएएस बनने की रेस में है। उनमें से एक तो डार्क हॉर्स निकलता, बाकी दिल्ली के मुखर्जी नगर में ही अपने सपनो की कब्र बनाकर लौटते है। तिसपर भी, पढ़ाई कभी भी ज़ाया नही जाती। हर कोई कुछ न कुछ बन ही जाता है, और सबसे बड़ी बात वो अच्छा इंसान बन जाता है।

This is, undoubtedly, the best audio book I have listened to so far.
Probably, I wouldn't have liked it as much, had I read it myself and not listened to the brilliant narration by the author himself.
Even though the story of the trials and tribulations, triumphs and failures of UPSC aspirants in the famous Mukherjee Nagar of Delhi, is quite predictable, Nilotpal Mrinal's accent and narration to present the conversations between the protagonists in Bhojpuri/Bihari accent, makes this audiobook extremely enjoyable.

2021 में Aspirants देखी थी और तब पता चला कि इसके पीछे नीलोत्पल मृणाल की किताब डार्क हॉर्स को लेकर विवाद हुआ था। उसी से इसे पढ़ने की इच्छा हुई।

किताब हाथ में ली तो सबसे पहले यही समझ आया कि यह सिर्फ़ UPSC की तैयारी की कहानी नहीं है, बल्कि उन लाखों युवाओं की झलक है जो गाँव-कस्बों से दिल्ली आते हैं और मुखर्जी नगर जैसे माहौल में सपनों का बोझ ढोते हैं। इसमें रहने की मुश्किलें, खाने की किल्लत, नशे का जाल, टूटते सपने और मानसिक दबाव सब ईमानदारी से दर्ज है।

भाषा असली लगती है, संवाद वही हैं जो सड़कों पर सुनाई देते हैं, और यही इस किताब की सबसे बड़ी ताक़त है।

लेकिन कमियाँ भी उतनी ही साफ़ हैं। कहानी लगातार मुख्य पात्र पर केंद्रित नहीं रह पाती और कई किरदार आते-जाते रहते हैं जिससे कथानक थोड़ा बिखरा-सा लगता है। कोचिंग शुरू होने तक का हिस्सा विस्तार से लिखा है, मगर प्री-मैन्स और संघर्षों को जल्दबाज़ी में समेट दिया गया, जिससे किरदार का विकास अधूरा रह गया। कई जगह फिल्मी-नाटकीयता भी ज़्यादा महसूस हुई। सच कहूँ तो मुझे इस किताब से ज़्यादा उम्मीदें थीं, जो पूरी नहीं हो पाईं।

फिर भी डार्क हॉर्स का महत्व कम नहीं होता। यह किताब युवाओं को आईना दिखाती है और यह एहसास दिलाती है कि उनकी लड़ाई अकेली नहीं है। मेरे लिए यह एक “पुल जैसी किताब” है जिसने लेखक को पहचान दी और पाठकों को उस दुनिया से रूबरू कराया जिसे अक्सर लोग नज़रअंदाज़ कर देते हैं। डार्क हॉर्स साहित्य से ज़्यादा एक दौर का दस्तावेज़ है।

It's written in a comical way which acts as taste enhancer masala but the core is brute as it goes. One can imagine the life and the crowd of CSE aspirants which is enough to push another into anxiety.
It hurts when you don't get through but it hurts even more when your compatriot gets through. It's the painful truth in preparation. Ans there's always the horrifying image of someone opting to end life on the day of the result.
The Sahitya Akademi youth accolade attracts eyes who otherwise would tend to skip through. Dark horse in itself is a peculiar title but the tale manages to inscribe the life of aspirants in a corner of the hub of CSE prepration in the country. The title compliments the perseverance of one such aspirant. Albeit it's based on the long drawn battle of one, but the gist is to find a "dark horse" within one's self.
UPSC isn't just an exam, it's an obsession which one can only notice in the familiar crowd.

Such a beautiful story full of hope, motivation , despair, frustration and fighting spirit !! All the characters are realistic and true depiction of society ,some lines are simply gem ❤.
The characters of guru deserves a separate book!!

P.s. the book has no similarity with aspirants at all !! Though the character of sandeep bhaiya and guru follow the same trajectory but are differently projected in both the descriptions !!

लिखाई सुंदर है। Flow बहुत अच्छा है। कहने का ढंग आपको कहानी में खींच लेता है। हर पात्र अपने आप में अलग कहानी और सबसे बड़ी बात अपने में interested रखता है। जिस संसार में कहानी घट रही है वो संसार बड़े रोचक ढंग से पेश किया गया है। बस एक कमी लगी - कहानी से कुछ और आशा थी। जिस ढंग से शुरू हुई वो कशिश बीच के बाद खोने लगी। ऐसा लगा मृणाल जी कुछ और कहना चाह रहे थे पर कुछ और कह गए। बाकी सब सुंदर है।

After reading "Aughad" last year, "Dark Horse" is my second of Nilotpal Mrinal and first book of the year 2020. The "Aughad" gave me some idea about Nilotpal's way of writing which was fascinating to hold in.
"Dark horse" was Nilotpal's first book which has been already blessed with " Sahitya Academy Award " and after turning pages of this book, felt like it deserve.

The book takes you to one of the most competitive place of India, Mukherjee Nagar, located in Capital which has became a bastion of CSE preparation. The writer unravel new layer of CSE preparation and their life with every new page. The story revolves around characters preparing for CSE, their courage to deal family despite several failure, relinquishing social life and more importantly in this crisis, able to maintain motivation for preparation where success rate is even less than 0.1%. The book also makes you aware with harsh condition of parents and their inability to bear expenses of their loved ones, it also takes you to the village where it is assumed that Civil aspirant must acquaint themselves with every facts available.

The book makes you laugh, compel you to moist your eyes at some instances and finally leave you with a soothing smile.
Anyone preparing for CSE, desiring to sit in CSE or just curious about the life of Civil aspirants or of any competitors must give it a shot.

अमेज़न पर 3100 रेटिंग है और 72% ने 5 स्टार दिया है; goodreads पर 900+ और औसत रेटिंग 4.2 आउट ऑफ़ 5 है।

पॉपुलैरिटी या सफलता का अंदाज़ लग गया होगा। हर taste के लोग हैं; सबकुछ के लिए बाजार उपलब्ध है।

कहानी आईएएस की तैयारी कर रहे यूपी-बिहार के वैसे लोअर मिडिल क्लास बच्चों की है जिनका ये जनरेशन पहली बार घर से बाहर पढ़ने को निकला है। तो यूपी-बिहार के ऐसे बच्चे कुछ कनेक्शन फील किए होंगे।



बस जो बात समझ नहीं आई वो ये है कि साहित्य अकादमी वालों को क्या मिला इस किताब में कि युवा केटेगरी का प्राइज दे दिया ?

Pdf तो 100 पेजेज में समेटा गया है; शुरू के 80 पन्ने तो वाहियात हैं। 80 पन्ने पढ़ने के बाद कहानी में आगे क्या होगा ये जानने की इच्छा जगी। इस इच्छा के जगते ही लगा कि लगता है ये मुफ़्त का पीडीएफ कहीं मार्केटिंग ट्रिक तो नहीं क्योंकि इसमें तो अब बस 20 पन्ना ही शेष है तो इन 20 पेजेज में कहानी तो समेटायेगा नहीं; मतलब पीडीएफ अधूरा होगा। जिसे आगे का घटनाक्रम जानना होगा वो किताब खरीदना चाहेगा।

लेकिन सुखद बात यही रही कि पीडीएफ पूरा था, अंत को सटासट 20 पन्ने में समेट दिया।

यात्रा-वात्रा करते समय 'सरस सलिल' टाइप मैगज़ीन की जगह इसको पढ़ा जा सकता है।

This book is not actually the traditional write up on an event or a work of imagination. This is rather a story revolving around the life of students who are part of the competitive civil services and challenges they face during the journey.
The writer is does not use the proper language written in language books but uses the language of the commons to highlight the real issues. The write up is more experiential and pragmatic.
This book is meant to act as a confidence booster as well as guider in the journey of competitive preparation. This is a must read, especially for those preparing for competitive exams. This can act as a guide and an inspiration.
