Rate this book
It is 2393 CE. Alik Senquero is an archeologist from the city-state of Skygate. A century ago, Skygate rose from the ruins of our civilization, which mysteriously collapsed in 2057. It’s an event known as The Fall in Alik’s time, yet one knows how it happened. Alik is working with a researcher who built a unique holo-projection device that allows one to view past events to discover why it happened. Alik’s imagination is on fire. This new technology could revolutionize the field of archeology. He and his small team view the weeks that led up to The Fall in an attempt to piece it together. But something goes terribly wrong. Instead of just watching events unfold, he’s somehow dropped right into them and unable to return to his time. There, Alik encounters Jace Acamar, the son of a powerful US senator. Jace literally has Alik’s life in his hands. Can Alik convince Jace who he is and help him find a way to return to the future before he witnesses civilization’s end first hand?

(Mark Ian Kendrick)

I wish I could say I come from a long line of creative types, that creative endeavors were encouraged, that creativity was a hallmark of my family. Alas, I'm the outcast... and DAMN proud of it.

In fact, I'm the only gay member of my family on both sides for generations. I know. I did our family's genealogy on computer a decade ago just to find the others. No gays. No painters. No writers. No artists. No inventors. No intellectuals. Just Republicans. And those addicted to mythological beings made up during the Bronze Age.

So, let this be a lesson to everyone. In every boring family a black sheep must be born to create a fresh look, to stir the pot. To force change! Words are power. Unleash them!

A More Accurate and Frightening “Time Machine”

I loved the first book I read by Mark Ian Kendrick, which was a tender, sexy gay coming of age love story. “Suddenly Solid” is also a gay love story, but that’s the subplot of a fantastic science-fiction epic spanning the very near future, the distant future in 2393, and time in between. If you loved H.G. Wells “The Time Machine”, you would find this story to be even more compelling. Whereas Wells foretold an end to civilization from nuclear war, Mark’s story envisions a more likely calamity, which is what is happening to our planet and the failures of humankind to address it. What impresses me most about Mark is not his creativity and imagination in these stories, but his ability to write in very different genre’s, each result being excellent. A great read. Finished it in one day.

I enjoy science fiction novels with a gay protagonist. And like Kendrick's earlier book, STEALING SOME TIME, this one involves time travel. STEALING SOME TIME remains one of my favorite books, in spite of the poor editing. SUDDENLY SOLID suffers from the same poor editing.

Also, I did not enjoy SUDDENLY SOLID as much as Kenrick's earlier book because it is slow-moving, although it does get quite interesting near the end of the book. There are a lot of phrases that seem a bit odd, as if English were a second language for the author, such as "He actually felt better ALL OF THE SUDDEN" instead of "ALL OF A SUDDEN" (p. 72). There are also some logic issues, such as in chapter 3, we are told the time travelers cannot go below the plane of their feet, or go underground. And yet, in chapter 5, the time travelers go to SB3 (sub-basement 3) which would be 3 floors underground. Hmmm. And while I enjoyed the sex scenes, there were too many of them for me. Not so many that I would put this book in the M/M erotic category, but a bit more sex than I thought was necessary.

All in all, not a bad read, but I would recommend the author's book, STEALING SOME TIME (2 parts) instead.
