HOW IT ALL BEGAN

I started writing my first romance novel in secret. I was working a temp job in an insurance office in Manhattan at the time, and the office manager had made it clear that even if there was nothing to do, I still had to look busy-- never one of my big talents. I felt bad about the wasted time, though, and I needed something to round out my other chosen career, which was singing. Yeah, that's right. Most artists choose a more practical Plan B to back up their improbable Plan A. Me? No way. "Long Shot" is my middle name.

So I sneakily set up a Document 1 and a Document 2 with a spreadsheet on it. If my Boss du Jour walked by I could quick-like-a-bunny switch screens, and whenever the coast was clear, I went back to my story. Not that I was slacking, mind you. If there was work to be done, I did it. The sneakiness felt familiar, though, because I've been teased about reading romances since I was a kid. I think the day I finally grew up was the day I stopped trying to cover up what I was reading on the bus, train or subway. Let people think whatever they like.

It wasn't until I moved to Italy (details of that Long Shot provided later on) that I got serious about writing, though. I found myself with many long, quiet days alone with nothing to do, so I slogged my way bravely to the end of the manuscript and sent it out. Everybody rejected it-except for Kensington. I wrote for them for a few years, and then made a bid for an erotic novella for the new Brava imprint, and oh joy, they accepted it. Then I wrote BEHIND CLOSED DOORS. And so on, and so forth.

That's how I started. I can't think of anything I'd rather do. I never knew it would be so scary, and so hard . . . all that solitude and silence, a blank computer screen, and no one to blame. But still. It's worth it. It's great.

I was SO excited to start on a new series by Shannon McKenna. I’ve been a HUGE fan of hers for a VERY long time. Right Through Me was a really good read for me, I definitely had a hard time putting this book down.

This book was filled with amazing paranormal elements. Shannon sure knows how to come up with such excellent ideas, I always find myself wondering how she comes up with this stuff. Add in all the interesting characters and her evil villains, what’s not to like?

There was a lot of heated moments between Noah and Caro but I have to be honest here, I felt there were so many of them that the story really did not get moving as fast as I would have liked. Yes, they were very sensually done and yes, I felt the attraction they shared for each other. I can’t believe I’m saying this but my opinion here was there was a bit too much sex. This IS my only complaint for what I consider an amazing start to a new series.

The action scenes were FANTASTIC, they had me on the edge of my seat wondering how this was all going to play out. Very exciting stuff I tell you!

The wait is on for the next book in this series which WILL be a MUST read for me. With all the excellent characters that were introduced I find myself wondering whose book will be next.

This blurb sounded amazing…

Genetically modified humans with special abilities. Very cool.

With a somewhat scientific twist to it. Even better.

With a kickarse heroine and an alpha male Hero to die for. Sign me up.

Unfortunately the book frustrated me to no end. There is good frustration when it comes to books but there is frustration that drives you up the wall and where you want to pull your hair out because the characters are just irritating as hell.

I fell into the latter category. This book has so much potential which could have made the book easily a five star read.

The beginning and the world that Ms. McKenna created is captivating and sucked me in. Getting to know the complex characters was a pleasure to read.

Obsidian turned them into super soldiers when they were teenagers and their time was up until they rebelled and escaped form Midlands part of Obsidian.

Noah is a modified human, a CEO of a company. Cold hearted, analytical, logical and void of emotion. That is until his sister Hannah buys him a belly dancer for his birthday and his world is filled with colour.

There is instant attraction but Caro doesn’t have time for the distraction as she is on the run and being framed for a murder that she didn’t commit.

But Noah can’t seem to let her go after their one unforgettable night they spent together. Noah is controlling with everything even his tribe of fellow misfits who also escaped from Midlands.

I liked him until everything he did took over the whole book and then just became too much. Caro didn’t trust anyone. I get it due to the loss that she experienced but there was just too much back and forth between them.

Don’t get me wrong I love me some sex and hot scenes in a book but every time we would get to an interesting aspect of the overall plot they would have sex. They didn’t talk but had sex when it came to talking at any time they had sex. Yes I think through him being modified that was the reason why they had such an intense connection.

The story dragged on and admittedly I skimmed but I think I got lost somewhere along the way. It started off strong and then it fizzled out picked up again and fizzled out.

I will continue in the series as this is a good start to the series.

If you like stories about modified super-humans, you will enjoy this series by Shannon McKenna. Noah leads a contingent of escapees from the Midlands, the innocuous name of a lab that experiments on the less fortunate to build super soldiers. Very Dr. Frankenstein-esque. But that is not where this story is centered. It picks up years later with the mods, who are very successfully leading normal lives - if normal is wealthy beyond imagination and beautiful to the point it hurts your eyes.

There is a strong Urban Fantasy feel to this novel, along with romantic suspense. The sci-fi elements are wrapped up in the mods and the futuristic tech.

Noah and Caro generate some steam, and insta-love rears its head. The book kept me engaged but some parts just didn't fully click. I wanted more buddy banter, more Midlands backstory. However, McKenna has a talent for description and imagining a dastardly villain. I will definitely pick up the next book in the series.

I’ve been checking up on Shannon Mckenna’s website waiting for Right Through Me’s release for awhile now. The anticipation has been great because a) many of my other favorite authors aren’t putting anything new out right now (which I suspect has something to do with them waiting for contracts to end so they can selfpublish, but it could also be they are just bored with writing anymore, and b) the release of this one got pushed back a couple times I think.

As soon as I saw it was out, I bought and barreled right thru it...in one day. (I wish I could restrain myself. Now the wait again. FML.)

In many ways, RTM is typical Shannon Mckenna (minus the McClouds); same romantic suspense, same gritty sex, same shockingly nasty bad guys- but just a tad more focused on the techy super soldier paranormal bits the she introduced in the later McCloud series entries.

From the moment she entered the room, Noah Gallagher knew she was different. Tech implants gave him enhanced vision and everything he saw in her, made him want her more.

Caro Bishop was in hiding and on the run, having witnessed a murder- and committed one herself. Dancing for this man was just a way to make some money before she had to blaze once again. His fierce attention pulled on her, so she knew she had to get out fast.

Their paths are destined to entwine however, because the man out to get her, is made of the same things that made the fierce stranger- only he’s gone to the dark side. Now it’s a race to keep Caro hidden so the bad guy doesn’t get to her first, because he doesn’t just want to silence her- he wants to use her as the key to unlock a danger so frightening, it will change the entire world.

I have to say the plot of Right Through Me brought to mind another novel I read (and loved) recently, The Master, although varied enough to give it an entirely different spin. Heroine on the lam, Hero cold and calculating- although no where near as cold as from the other book, because Caro lights Noah up immediately and he runs with it. Their introduction is even similar as Caro is forced to take a job to survive though nowhere near as seedy a job as the heroine in The Master. But the world in this book is way bigger. (In KC’s book it was tightly focused on the H/h in their little love nest for much of the entire thing). The super soldier techy bits implanted by nefarious government corporations makes it fun too, despite the fact there’s nothing really new about it either. (I will say his implants were mildly confusing at first, with the characters talking about them as if we had already been introduced to his world. The reader eventually catches up- right about when the heroine learns more about them.)

The ending left me satisfied- with the bad guy beaten soundly and the H/h walking (okay, more like hobbling) off into the sunset. Still, bloodied and bruised Noah releases Caro, telling her to move on from him, because he knows he’s more danger to her now more than ever.

“No,” she said simply.

“Why not?” His eyes blazed with fiercely controlled emotion.

“Because it’s too late,” she said. “You’ve changed me. I can’t go back to being who I was before you came along. Maybe we are too different . . . but I’ve never wanted anything the way I want you.”

As much as I loved the McClouds, I’m glad the author is starting a new direction. I’m looking forward to the next installment!

This series severely needs a .5 novella to explain what in the world is going on. Look, if you have a soft spot for Universal Soldier, like me, you'll be into this. However, with no in the beginning or very great in depth explanation of how the Modified people were enhanced by the Obsidian group (absolutely no introduction or explanation of this mystery group) or who all the Midlands group were, with terms like AVPs, date dumps, and our hero constantly data driving (?!?) into his mind, I felt lost as all get out.
I know the Obsidian group experimented on kids to create enhanced soldiers but the actually time and eventual rebellion that is referenced, but not fully explained, was wildly intriguing but boy howdy lost inducing.
The suspense side I was in to but the romance was severely rushed with insta-lust and from the middle on, sex scenes took over the whole story.
There is an intriguing and interesting story here with characters that I do want to know more about but more pages and story explanation into the enhanced aspect drama is needed.
I'll be on the lookout for the next and hope we get more flushed out background and a more connected romance.

2 ½ stars. Lots of sex scenes. It needed a better story.

I loved some of this author’s early books. But I have not liked her recent books - too much psi-drugs. I decided not to read any more in the McClouds & Friends Series if she continued using psi-drugs. I was pleased to see this book was the first in a new series (The Obsidian Files). But again it was like the psi-drug books. Humans were experimented upon and given enhanced physical powers and mental abilities. Some have robotic implants.

Instead of showing us interesting characters, relationships and plot, the author describes unusual abilities, but she doesn’t do anything interesting with those abilities. The two fight scenes were like two strong guys fighting each other. It would have been better if the guys used their odd abilities instead of muscle.

One scene comes to mind that used special abilities, but it wasn’t that good. A guy is knocked out by drugs, but his mind is conscious enough to use his imagination to think of dream-like activities which speed up his metabolism which gets rid of the drug’s effects so he can break out of the thing they put him in.

Bottom line: this book felt like too much filler and too many sex scenes. Not enough plot or character development. It was hard to stay interested.

I liked some of the sex scenes - alpha male desires heroine like he’s never desired anyone else.

DATA:
Narrative mode: 3rd person. Story length: 382 pages. Swearing language: strong including religious swear words but not often used. Sexual language: strong. Number of sex scenes: more than 17. Setting: current day Seattle, Washington area. Copyright: 2016. Genre: romantic suspense thriller.

My reaction when I heard there is a new book... Shannon is an auto-buy for me!

happy brad

If you're a fan of Shannon McKenna's McCloud and Friends series, you will love this book too.

All the classic elements of a Shannon McKenna keeper are here: intense but gentle-with-heroine hero, vulnerable yet strong heroine, super bad villains who add to the tension. Of course, the love scenes are sooooo steamy, and not repetitive from her past stories either, actually, they feel even more intense with the hero's supernatural abilities .

Can tell that it'll be another hot series! Looking forward to reading about Noah's family and associates.

Right Through Me is the first instalment in Shannon McKenna’s new series The Obsidian Files.
Noah Gallagher is the head of a biotech firm and a super-soldier. The Obsidian Group had plucked him and other teenagers from the street and experimented on them. Obsidian experimented on them and enhanced them, giving them different unique abilities. After leading the rebellion against Obsidian Noah managed to escape with many others from the super-soldier program, including his sister.
Caro Bishop is on the run. Framed for murder she has to lie low and take on odd jobs to survive until she can find a way to clear her name. When she is hired as a belly dancer for Noah Gallagher’s birthday sparks fly between Noah and her instantaneously.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author, but I’m sure it won’t be the last. Both characters were smart and relatable. I really enjoyed this fast-paced and steamy action thriller.
I will definitely continue reading this series.

McKenna always gives us great books to read and this is no exception! Complicated drama with life and death situations and romance to boot, that is what she writes and Noah and Caro's story is no different. I know when I get a book from her it will be fantastic and worth every penny. You must add this to your reading list immediately if you like a little soldier enhancement and rebellion along with romance.

Noah is the self imposed leader of a group of men and women like him. His leadership is not challenged until this book. He is head of a biotech firm and has more than enough money. He is engaged and trying to be normal when for his birthday his sister hires a belly dancer. She completely turns his world upside down immediately. He cannot take his attention away from her even for his fiancé.

Caro is running for her life. She has been framed for murder and has had to leave everything and everyone behind and after what she saw she truly believes in monsters. She takes small jobs in order to live. When she dances for Noah though something changes. She feels and instantaneous connection to the man that scares her to death. What she doesn't know is that Noah knows the man who framed her.

Noah finds out after he chases the dancer into the street that she knows Mark, the man that kidnapped one of his friends who is like himself. She has gotten away though and he is reeling from that more than the fact that his fiancé just broke up with him, his brother that has been unaccounted for for 13 years has just saved him from going into business with the enemy.

Noah hires Caro for a private dance and they start there. He figures she's running, he's seen it before, in himself, and he feels the need to comfort her and feed her and keep her safe. She is resistant.

The journey Caro and Noah take is a minefield of emotions that includes a very sexual relationship, a battle of wills, and a quest for information.

Can Noah win her heart and keep her safe? Can Caro clear her name and reclaim her life? You'll have to read to find out.

I was so excited by this new series! I'm a huge fan of Shannon McKenna and was sad to see the McCloud series go, but this one does not disappoint. It opens up opportunities for so many amazing stories and the side characters have me excited for whatever she comes out with next. I love the sci-fi feel to this books. I loved the team and hints about what happened to the past.

As always Shannon McKenna paints the most amazing vibrant picture with her words. I can truly see what she explains from Noah's eyes and it's my favorite part of her writing. The fight scene at the end was epic and stuck with me for a while after the read. So amazing! The scenes were hot, hot, hot as always and deep and emotional on top of it.

The only downfall is that I wish there was more explanation to some of the acronyms. It's the first book, so the beginning was a little hard to follow. Also the back and forth between Noah and Caro was a lot. I wish Caro would have made a decision and stuck with it.

Overall the story is gripping and the words create a beautiful picture in the readers mind. I loved this story and can't wait for all the others to follow!

Shannon McKenna is my favorite author and I love her books. She writes heroes that are possessive, obsessive, and protective of the heroine. Plus, she writes smoking love scenes. I was super excited when this book was announced. Unfortunately, I had trouble getting into this one and almost lost interest in the beginning. I think starting the book without an explanation of the H's enhancements left me lost. I didn't understand if I was reading a sci-fi book taking place in a dystopian future. I found it very confusing to follow and really didn't like the h's intro. She was annoying at times as well but the story grew on me the more I read. Was also disappointed at Brenner's story. He should have had a better resolution. I can't wait to read about Asa. He doesn't have any enhancements so his book should be awesome. On the plus side, this book had the steam that this author does so well. The H is crazy for the h and that leads to red-hot sex scenes! I am eagerly waiting for the next book.

If you are a fan of Shannon McKenna, here's one way to look at this: take the McCloud series, throw in some shadowy sci-fi shenanigans, and turn up the dial all the way up to hyperdrive. 3.5 what the heck did I just read? stars.

To be honest, I always have a hard time with the first in a series when there's massive world-building. It didn't help that I was simply dropped into a world of modified supersoldiers and their supersonic skills with not one word of explanation.
His brain had been forged into a motorcycling monster of a learning machine. He'd spent a lot of time pondering whether it was a curse or a tool. In the end, he'd burn up trying to decide. It just was. Shut up and deal with it.
i feel the same way. Thrown into a world of barely distinguishable side characters and filled with moments where Noah's AVP is burning hot so he has to do an analog to cool the imbed in order to view Caro's shimmering sig, it was frankly too much to decipher and in the end, I had to just "shut up and deal with it" like Noah did. Otherwise, it was just too exhausting trying to keep track of the characters and the giant potholes and unanswered storylines.

I loved the cracktastic McCloud alphaholes and Noah and Caro were every bit as sexually charged as you'd expect from a Shannon McKenna couple. The action started right away from the first paragraph. Caro and Noah lock eyes and literally pant for each other. Good trademark Shannon McKenna sexy times.

The problem was that outside of bed, the characters' actions and feelings and words made absolutely no sense. Remember when the McCloud series went from a slight touch of paranormal to full-on wackiness with Kevin's return from the dead in Fade To Midnight? Same built-in wackery here. I can't explain much more without giving spoilers. Then again, it doesn't matter: they won't make much sense anyway.

Crazy subplots aside, my hope is that the series does some serious 'splainin'. My vote is for Asa's story next but I guess we can't keep poor Luke hanging.

The stunning book cover with it mesmerizing eyes emphasizes one of Noah's biotech features which play a critical part of the story. For me this book had the feeling of a time from the future. I guess it is because of the all the biotech referencing throughout. It was interesting with detailed descriptions given by the author explaining the abilities of the super-soldiers and how they came to exist.

This book is fast-paced, suspenseful with a few scenes that could of become gruesome but the author portrayed them in a manner that made a point without going into extremely detailed descriptions.

Caro is a strong, smart, determined and resourceful women with a hidden soft side. My favorite type of heroine.

Noah was really much sweeter than I originally thought. As the author peels away his layers the reader will get a clear vision of who he really is and fall in love with his character.

The author has several secondary characters introduced in this book that are strong enough to carry their own story and I will be curious to see who is featured in the next book.

I give this 4 STARS for it's originality. Will you pick up a copy today?

Right Through Me is the first book of the Obsidian Files series. In this book, Noah Gallagher becomes obsessed with the girl that his sister, Hannah, hires to perform a belly dance as a birthday present. Caro has been doing whatever she can to make money while on the run from Mark Olund. Little does Caro know, but she has been thrown into the world of bio enhancements that both Noah and Mark share. Her attraction to Noah is as volatile as his is to her, making it easy for her to fall into bed with him, but it isn't long before she realizes that Noah may be her only hope of escaping Mark and defeating his plans for her to open a safe that will expose thousands of men and women to Mark's plans to build a bio enhanced army.
Shannon McKenna's signature has always been stories populated with alpha males that have unique abilities along with explosive eroticism. This book lives up to her previous McCloud brother stories in that regard. This book, however, seemed more concerned with the physical enhancements of the characters rather than their backstories. Overall, however, this was a good beginning to a new series establishing several characters who I assume will star in future books. A good quick read.

This was potentially a good story but the heroine spoilt it all for me. Soon as she opened her mouth or actions ruined any kind of romance or chemistry. Especially in all the wed scenes. She was very lame.

2.5 stars but I'll round it to 3 because Shannon McKenna is a damn good author.

As I previously stated I'm a huge fan of Shannon McKenna. I've reread her McCloud series atleast five times. I worship at her alter as a writer of thriller romances and to this day I struggle to find another author of the same genre I can enjoy half as much. Which is why it pains me to write this review.

What a mess!!! I'm going to have to brag a moment to get my point across. I read a lot and I read a pretty wide variety with the exception of horror and sci-fi. I feel confident in saying that I do not struggle to follow a plot or to follow where an author is trying to lead me. With this book I was lost by page two. I felt like I had begun a series by starting with book three. She used terms I was completely unfamiliar with and seeing as they we're completely made up I assume most people would be unfamiliar with them as well. The main character had undergone alterations leaving him with cybernetic enhancements not visible to the naked eye. That part was completely clear by page one. What wasn't clear was how they worked and what they were doing while they did whatever they did. Beginning at chapter one, paragraph three, the main character went on and on about what he was seeing and feeling via the enhancements and what they were doing to him but it was one big indistinguishable mess! It's very frustrating to me as a reader to feel completely lost and let's face it, plain dumb, while reading a book. I'm not well versed in sci-fi so maybe that was the problem.

I'm a big fan of insta-lust. Huge fan. But I prefer my characters to make decisions that are at least reasonably logical while experiencing their insta-lust. Let me give you an example. Very small spoiler so skip down of you need to. So Noah is the main character. He's rich, an uptight type A kind of guy who has made it his life's job to keep himself and others like him off the grid and safe So, our enhanced hottie sees his new love interest for the FIRST time and RUNS out of his office building during a very important meeting with his fiancee's father, and runs after her cab down the street. If you've spent the last few years hiding from a secret military lab would you behave that way? I mean really!! Ridiculous.

Then the story progresses and I couldn't have cared the least. I enjoy beefed up badasses. These beefed up badasses were so mediocre I was bored. I would have traded one of them for Steve Erkle just for a little stimulating conversation. And Noah was the most boring stick up his butt hero!

I can't believe the same author wrote this! It felt rushed. The characters weren't anything special and the plot was boring. Read her McCloud series if you want a thrill! The characters are awesome and believable. The heroines are kick ass and feminine and the heros are badass alpha males who worship their women. The plots are a thrill ride and I fell in love with everyone one of her characters.

This is a gripping sci-fi, suspense romance with a group of clandestine technologically and genetically advanced super soldiers endeavouring to live life away from the people who used their bodies like guinea pigs to be tested and discarded. Their bodies and perceptions, skills and abilities have been modified to make them into killing machines but they want none of it. They call themselves and others like them mods. They've managed to escape, take on new identities and make lives for themselves but one of them has gone rogue, seeking revenge on everyone who isn't a mod. Noah Gallagher is a mod, a biotech tycoon and, as a surprise birthday present, his sister organises a dancer to perform at his party. The dancer is actually Caro and their attraction to each other is mutual - even though his fiancee is sat next to him whilst he watches her perform! Little do either of them know of the secrets both are hiding, that they have a mutual foe and the dangers they are both to encounter - but you'll have to read it yourself to discover more!

The characters are brilliant and the action brilliantly portrayed. The plot is well developed with plenty of background information explaining how the Mods were developed, treated and are now coping with life despite the drawbacks inherent in being one of the early prototypes for the treatment they were subjected to. This is the first in a series and I'd love to continue reading about the characters- especially Hannah, Aso, Sisko and Zade. I loved the banter in this action packed suspense filled thriller and have no hesitation in highly recommending it to anyone who enjoys reading this genre.

I was gifted an ARC of this novel in exchange for this, my honest review.

4.5 / 5 stars

I first fell in love with Shannon McKenna with her McClouds & Friends; that very series is THE reason why I hate the library. I read the books, I loved the books...

And I had to give them back.

Oh, the horror.

I just love her brand of contemporary meets suspense meets a little out-worldly. It works, and it's believable (I do love me a well written werewolf though so...). Needless to say, I was pretty excited about this new series.

Like with those McClouds, Ms. McKenna's ability to write believable paranormal is astounding. I enjoy the ideas she comes up with, and these super-soldiers trained from their teens? She did a great job on the thought-out process and didn't shove the knowledge down readers' throats, as some books in these types of worlds do. I loved Noah and Caro and felt that their chemistry was well written and on a realistic timeframe-type scale, as well--which tends to be a big plus/minus for me, personally.

I absolutely cannot wait to watch as this series grows; it's going to be another keeper!

WOW! I love it and this unique plot is only one of the reasons I love Shannon McKenna!!
She always has the BEST covers as well!!
Besides the uniqueness of the plot it is also non-stop excitement, captivating and as always hot as hell!! It is so easy to get lost in the excitement and danger along with each character. Shannon has this amazing ability to develop new and extraordinary characters that you want to know and get lost in. This is what sets her apart from the rest...she is in a class all her own!!

Caroline Bishop deve scappare, cambiare vita.

I've been reading Shannon McKenna for years and absolutely loved her McCloud series, but when I saw a notice that book #2 of The Obsidian Files, entitled My Next Breath, was soon to be released, I realized that I had somehow missed Right Through Me, #1, and bought a copy immediately. Shannon McKenna seldom disappoints, and in the end, that's true of Right Through Me, but it's the beginning of the novel that had me confused and made me feel as if I'd somehow missed a prequel, which is the reason for my giving this novel a 4-star rather than a 5-star rating. All I can suggest about this initial confusion is stick with it, because you're in for an amazing read.

As the novel opens, we meet the hero, Noah Gallagher, CEO of Angel Enterprises, who is beyond shocked as a sexy and beautiful belly dancer interrupts a Board meeting and begins to perform. He's transfixed by her, something that doesn't go unnoticed by his fiance, who is seated next to him. The exotic dancer is a surprise birthday gift from Noah's younger sister, Hannah, who wants him to lighten up. Once the performance ends, Noah fiance ends their engagement and storms off, but all Noah wants is to see the dancer perform again, just for him. What's not terribly surprising is that during the dance, we learn that Noah has been modified, he's a cross between Cyborg, The Terminator and Robo-Cop, and can read signatures, the energy and even the mood and thoughts of others. We'll soon learn more about just how modified he is. While it comes as no surprise that Ms. McKenna has blended sci-fi aspects into a romance, it took reading the first 5 chapters before I began to feel that I wasn't reading a later novel in a series, rather than the first. Eventually, I got it, and what an amazing read this turned out to be.

Skillfully blending sci-fi and romance is no easy feat, but it is something Ms. McKenna does exceedingly well. We soon learn that the dancer is Caro, who is unmodified but has developed special abilities of her own. She's been on the run and in hiding for the past 8 months, trying to elude the mysterious Mark Olund, another modified human, who needs Caro's abilities to open a safe, and he doesn't much care who he tortures or kills in the process of attempting to kidnap her. Noah is well aware of Mark Olund, who, after undergoing the same enhancements, somehow managed to lose his soul and his humanity in the process. Noah, not yet trusting her, makes it his mission to discover what Caro knows, how she knows it and why Mark Olund is after her.

I will warn readers who take issue with controlling, overprotective, alpha men, because Noah is certainly one of them, but that particular trait is also something I've come to expect from Ms. McKenna's novels, but again, hang in there, because her heroines always have a backbone, and can give as good as they get.

There's lots of action and intrigue to come, as well as a whole lot of off-the-charts heat between Noah and Caro, something else I've come to expect from one of Ms. McKenna's novels, and in Right Through Me, she certainly delivers. There's is also a fascinating cast of secondary characters, including Noah's brother, Asa, his aforementioned sister, and his team of other modified humans--Zade, Sisko and Luke, who I'm sure will have their own novels in the future. I will warn of a small cliffhanger at the end of this novel, which only serves to make me even more eager to read the next novel in what promises to be another gripping, exciting and sexy series.

Original review: https://myshelfbooks.wordpress.com/20...

Not so long ago I won an e-book copy of this book in a giveaway. I guess I would have never picked something like this otherwise. I’m not a big fan of books with cyborgs, because they tend to be a bunch of nonsense sex and little story. Luckily, this one is the exception. Due to life, it has taken me ages to finish it; but it’s a really nice book. Much better than expected.

We met Noah, an enhanced soldier that several years ago escaped from the crazy scientists that made him (and several others) a cyborg. His mods give him superior strength, stamina, greater healing factor, weird visual inputs and many other things. A killing machine. Caro is on the run from another cyborg (although she doesn’t know Marc is one), due to her knowledge of a password that would give the evil cyborg total control over other modifed soldiers. Obviously, Noah meets Caro and makes his mission to protect her.

The main story about the origin of the cyborgs is really nice, making the book a fun ride. The big baddies are not defeated in this book, so I guess we will know more about the evil scientists in future books. This one focuses more on the crazy Marc and his attempts to gather an army to proclaim himself king of the world. The few chapters where we geet to experience Marc’s part of the story are among my favourites of the book, even when the character is plain cruel (95% of the time). At first I thought the author wanted us to develop some kind of sympathy for him, but soon enough the opposite is stated. When he starts waking up sleepers, you can only hate the way Marc behaves…

The pace is fluid most of the book, but it hits a bump during the first “date” of Noah and Caro. There are several chapters in a row that eveyrthing that happens is just sex. Nice scenes, but a bit tiring after a while. The fight scenes are good, but with enhanced humans they are a bit messy, fast and the the right amount of crazy. There are some weird thing at the end of the book, when people with melted brains are able to shoot… but I will forgive those.

The romance goes downhill since the first sex encounters. Noah’s protection drive goes a bit far and tends to treat Caro as his possession. Extra points to Caro for using his hormones as weapon against Noah and stealing his car to get far from him. That was fun and it should have been humbling for the cyborg, but I guess the macho male needs much more than that. Caro loses all her points when she finally falls into his game. And the worst part is the end… After just a couple of days they get engaged. I hate that cliché. It’s TOO SOON!!! When are they going to learn that??

I will have to keep reading this saga. I need to know if Luke gets rescued or what. Besides, in this first book there are many nice characters that I bet will have their own books sooner or later. It has been a really nice first step, even though there are some parts that unnerve me.
