Dog hurt his foot, Sheep scratched her tummy and Bear sat on a splinter! What will make everything all better? Clean it, kiss it and put a bandage on it! Young readers will delight in the five animal friends' misadventures and be eager to help make things "all better" with the five reusable and repositionable stickers.
Illustrations: The point of this book is to illustrate common injuries children might sustain but through anthropomorphized animals. Given that, I would have expected the injuries to be both easier to spot and more in keeping with the appearance of scratches and bruises and bumps we see on children. But perhaps that would be disturbing for children. The device of reusable bandaid stickers to put on the various animals is no doubt something children will enjoy interacting with.
Words: The repetition of the chorus (clean it, kiss it, put a bandage on it, all better) is a useful mnemonic device, as promised to me by the mother who gave me this book to remind the child of the basics of first aid. What concerns me is that some of these injuries would not be solved by a bandaid. Significant appendage sprains and potential concussion-causing injuries would not be made better by a band aid. This book could not replace actual medical advice and one would hope that it would not lead a child to believe him/herself fully capable of assessing the severity of his/her injuries.
I may gain more approval of this book and update this review in the future if I find that children in fact are able to discern the limitations of this book's usefulness.
**I'm a PhD student in Eng Lit who will become a mom in 1 month and I'm reviewing books based on the criteria I know for books, not based on how my kids react to them. I may come back and edit reviews to reflect the opinion of child audiences for whom these books were intended**
All three of my kids have loved this book. And it has surprisingly held up well after 5+ years of heavy use. I've read it about 100 times so I consider myself a very qualified reviewer of this tome. There isn't much to the text - that's why it isn't getting 5 stars. It's really repetitive and all of the words would probably fit on an index card. But there are reusable bandages that you get to put on the boo-boo animals get in the book, and that is the fun part. Teaches some compassion and caring, and allows for some good hand-eye coordination. A nice, differentiated addition to the kids bookshelf.
Various animals sustain minor injuries which are treated by washing, kisses, and bandaids (reusable ones included in the book!). High quality set up for the book and a fine way to treat minor scrapes.
We just re-read this book for the dozenth time (at least) and I can't believe I've never reviewed it before. I bought this for a long road trip. My four-year-old was getting some sticker books to use on the trip and I figured my 18-month-old would want something similar because she always wants what he has. At the time, though, she didn't have the dexterity to use proper stickers. I hoped this would work as a stand in for a sticker book, and it totally did! This book is so simple, but interactive because kids have to "clean" and "kiss" the animal's scrapes and cuts. And then of course they get to play with the bandaids, which are just so cool because they can be rinsed in water to regain their stickiness. Ours were tossed all over a car that was sandy from the beach and have been rinsed and re-used many times over the past year and are still as sticky as the day we got the book. This continues to be popular with both kids, even my now 5-year-old who you would think would have outgrown it. The only downside is that it does have those 5 band-aids, which could get lost if you aren't careful. That's the sort of thing that drives me crazy, so I've been obsessive about not taking this book out of the house/car and making my kids gather up all the band-aids as soon as they are done playing with it.
ETA December 2017: My daughter (now 3) still goes through occasional phases of being totally obsessed with this book, and when she pulls it out to read it my almost-6-year-old son still comes running. I'd still say this book is ideal for toddlers, but at our house, at least, it has had some serious longevity.
ETA April 2021: F (now 3) likes when she occasionally gets a turn to use this book, but L (now 6) still dominates it and insists on keeping it in her bedroom. It's way too simple for her now (she can practically read it to herself) but she still likes the concept of taking care of the animals. And I'm happy to report we still have all 5 band-aids!
I got this book through Usborne. It was a popular recommendation. It is a smooth board book. It comes with 5 plastic reusable bandages of 5 different colors and animals on them.
5 animals got a little owie, young readers "clean it, kiss it and put a bandage on it!" My son absolutely LOVES this book! He will clean the owie and kiss it and lovingly put a bandage on the boo boo.
I was a little concerned about the durability and the ability of reusable bandages being truly reusable. I have pets, so fur is inevitable to be on nearly everything sticky. My son also has the habit of ripping things apart and peeling stuff off. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the book and bandages. The bandages just needs to be cleaned off with cold water and it's good to go. It's actually quite stiff plastic, and there's no peeling of stickers and it's difficult to bend it. So, it passes my son's durability test.
The only tiny thing that bothers me (I'm just nit picking here), is the purple bandage isn't really purple, it's more of darker blue. So when I tell my son, that's a purple bandage, he gets confused and says no that's blue. The resting spot where the bandages go, is purple.
There's another book similar that uses glasses, so I'm going to get that one as well.
I was introduced to Usborne books about 6 months ago. I then hosted my own party in November. I had wanted to get this book with my Hostess rewards, but it hasn't been available. Luckily, my consultant had a discount party to get rid of some of her stockpile, and this was in there! So not only was I able to finally get it, I snagged it on sale!!!
My daughter LOVES this book. Even more so than I expected her to. We received it in the mail in the evening and by the next morning we'd already read it 5 times. It's a really sweet book about 5 different animals hurting themselves. The book has removable bandages that stick to the pages. So the child is supposed to clean the wound, kiss it, and then put the band-aid on. My daughter LOVES it. Every time I try to entice her to read a different book, she always comes back to this.
I like that it is teaching her about how to treat minor cuts and scrapes. She loves the sticky band-aids. And when I mentioned to my consultant that I thought the band-aids would lose their "stickiness" in the first week, she told me to just use warm water on them (with no soap) and let them dry. They will be good as new!
Summary: A story about a dog who hurt his foot, a sheep who scratched her tummy, and a bear who sat on a splinter. But when you put a Band-Aid on it, it makes everything all better! This story is an interactive story where your child can put the bandage on each animals to make them feel all better.
Characteristics that support the genre: Interactivity is used in this story to connect with the reader. Each page has a problem and the readers can fix the problem by using a Band-Aid to help make the animals feel all better. Having an interactive book really makes the readers and the child feel connect with the story.
Writing traits: This story uses ideas to convey the message and meaning. It really teaches the reader or listeners about how you might get hurt, but a little love and care makes it feel all better. I also love that it uses manipulatives in this story with actual stick on Band-Aids to really help the reader feel connected with the story.
This book is adorable. A perfect way teach kids about getting boo boos. The reusable bandages were a perfect addition to the book. Archer is a huge fan of anything interactive and I’m sure your little ones are too. Some of the writing is a little choppy, but not obvious enough to ruin the book for you completely. This book would be a great addition to any child’s bookshelf. There’s just nothing quite like learning to care for each other. In times of need or pain.
My 3 year old absolutely loves this interactive book. A few nights a week we reread it and he delicately places the band-aids that come with the book on each delightful character. The stickers are completely reusable by just rinsing under cold water once they stop sticking. This is one of those books that quickly became a go-to for us. To top it off it teaches a sense of empathy to care for these injured lovables.
This book introduces empathy to young readers. When one of the furry animal friends gets hurt, you have to clean it, kiss it, and put a bandage on it. It urges them to help someone who gets hurt. It also works on the "hurt" verb as well as other past tense verbs. If the child says "Oh no the doggie hurted his paw" the caregiver can respond with "yes the doggie hurt his paw" so that the child receives the correct sentence.
This book is a counting book. It shows different animals and their injuries how many there are and where they are located at and how they got their injuries and it teaches children how to take care of an injury. This book was a easy read and illustrations on it were very colorful it’s an activity book because it gives you fake Band-Aids to stick on all of the different animals injuries while you and your child are reading. My children I babysit really enjoyed this book!
This book was a hit! Everyone loved it. It was interactive, had a plot, and was humorous. I was worried about the reusable bandaids but they're made out of a type of plastic and are very sturdy and easy to move after the first time. The two-year-old I read it too loved putting the bandaids on. The 4-year-old loved cleaning and kissing the wounds...except the bear's. No one would kiss the bears, lol...it was on the booty.
My kiddo LOVED this book. The bandaids- even when they got kind of crudy because she wanted to put them on the floor- are really durable. She reads this book several times a day because it's so interactive. Also, she loves bandaids. Additionally, she can now tell me exactly where she got her own ouches, and how.
This is a cute little book about how to take care of small injuries. "Clean it, kiss it, put a bandaid on it. All better." As a bonus, it includes reusable stickers as jumbo bandaids that kids can actually put on the animals as they read the story. I'm sure eventually they can lose their stick, but hopefully they will last a good long while and the kids will get many reads out of them first.

This book is so great! Especially for children who are in the hospital or struggling an illness. Our 3 year old just got out of the hospital when we got this book, and it made him feel so great to help all the little animals feel better, and put bandaids on them like he had on himself. The sticky bandaids are washable so they can be reused over and over again! Such a great book!
The text is minimal, but with the 3 steps (clean it, kiss it, put a bandage on it) it is simple and the pictures are adorable. My two year old LOVES the book and there is a lot of things to add to the simple text - colors, animals, parts of the body - so we read the book slightly different every time.
Love the interactive bandage element to the story. Although once my daughter figured out how to pull the bandage off the page (instead of me handing it to her and her placing it down) then they started just getting tossed everywhere and it was time to return the book to the library.
I love this book so much and it’s one of the few I don’t mind reading over and over to my three year old. He loves kissing the animals’ boo-boos and putting bandaids on them. Definitely worth all five stars!
My baby loves this book! When we place the bandaids and say All Better! She just giggles and smiles so big. What a great book for teaching appropriate responses to getting hurt and that bumps and scrapes will get all better.
This interactive book is absolutely delightful! My daughter loves getting to use the stickers, as she follows along with the story! The involvement with the story, has shown, first hand, to have positive comprehension and enjoyment!
Elliot loves the re-usable bandaid stickers in this book. As each animal gets hurt, we clean it, kiss it, and put a bandage on it, then say “all better!”
My 19 month old wasn't interested in the book. He just wanted to take the bandaids and stick them to other surfaces or bend them. Maybe it was intended for older children, but the content is too simple for an older child in my opinion.
