The Axeboy's Blues

Rate this book
New Orleans:

A city with one foot in the past and the other ankle-deep in chartreuse-flavored dreams. Creatures and spirits of every ilk saunter down the jazz-filled streets day and night, struggling to find purpose amidst the ivy-drenched balconies and colorful shotgun houses.

The Axeboy's Blues follows a centuries-old agency tasked with protecting New Orleans from forces that would see her destroyed. Unfortunately, the agency was nearly wiped out and is virtually nonexistent. In a city where mosquitoes wear vests and spectacles, where the Mississippi is teeming with monstrous beasts, and where Wonder sprouts from peoples' heads like plants, can this agency fill its ranks once more to take on an adversary from its past – an adversary that has jumped through time?

Part fantasy, part steampunk, and all New Orleans, this is a really fun novel that incorporates real places and folks from the beautiful city as it leaps through multiple realms of existence. The Agents Of are the city's protectors, vowing to keep her safe from all who would harm her, human or otherwise. New Orleans is the only city where this book could feel plausible in the least, given its relationship to the supernatural, and the flavor is spot on. The characters are people I'd love to get to know and I feel like I could run into any one of them on Bourbon Street.

Such a fun and magical tale about a city I've only had the opportunity to be a part of for the past 9 months. Cafe Envie was the first coffee shop I went to when I first visited NOLA a year ago, and I had been eyeing this book for a long time on their cafe bar while I would wait for my cappuccinos before I finally purchased it. Reading this has made the streets of New Orleans feel that much more mysterious and esoteric, and Reynolds captured the spirit of the city so accurately with an exciting flare of creativity. I loved the pace of this story, and the ending was so satisfying that I can't wait to read the next one.

Five Stars material all the way(:
Have you ever read a book and had to stop because it was too amazing? AND as soon as you finish then you know you're going to be saddened that the second book isn't even out yet. Well, that is this freaking book! I love it so much, that it's actually my favorite in urban fantasy at the moment.

Andy Reynolds really captivates you in this beautiful world of New Orleans with his vivid descriptions of his complex and real characters! I can't even begin to tell you my favorite character because I LOVE all of them even the Axeboy! The creatures and lore in this book really blow my mind how I can envision it all. Truly a masterpiece.

It is an urban fantasy, sci-fi, magical realism, and has some steampunk elements that make this story based in New Orleans truly one of a kind. I recommend this book with all my heart and soul!

I have a review on my book blog soon about this wonderful book along with some character sketches I got inspired to do with Andy Reynolds descriptions of his characters!
