I have no idea why Cassie Miles writes Harlequin Intrigue books. Every single book I read by her feels like she wants to be writing screwball romantic comedies for a different line. But despite a few titles for long-defunct line Harlequin Temptation, which was where you would be most likely to find romantic comedies (and a line I quite liked back in the day), Miles has mostly written for Intrigue since the late 80s.
This nonsense has to do with Lexie DeMille, a babysitter for an admiral who becomes the target of an anti-conspiracy group of some kind. They believe he has what's called the Damascus Cache, which has the details of all the undercover spies across all the different agencies. Or something along those lines. Lexie's own father would be on there, which could put him in danger, even though he's retired.
Don't ask me.
The majority of the book consists of Lexie at the admiral's secure mansion, where she gets a bodyguard in the form of Mason Steele. Lexie finds Mason super hot, but they can never be together, because he wants a family one day, and she can't have kids because of a hysterectomy performed on her after a horrific car crash years earlier. She proceeds to behave like a tease for the entire time they are locked up together. Believe me, I hate using that term, but there is no other way to describe her, I'm afraid. She thinks Mason is hot, keeps coming on to him, leading him on, getting suggestive, and then always backing out when things look like they might progress. Mason is a gentleman and never says or even thinks one word against it, but Lexie's yo-yo behaviour was unfair and irresponsible.
This is plotless and free of suspense. Lexie's ex-boyfriend lurks in the shadows, aiming to get his hands on the Damascus Cache on behalf of a mysterious "leader", and muses about catching her and doing evil stuff that evil villains are supposed to do. But does he? No The climax takes up approximately a page and a half and the whole thing is wrapped up, of course not telling us who this "leader" is. The whole enterprise is just so stunningly pointless, comes with the usual "electric" touch when h/H first meet, and my big personal no-no of a character wriggling their eyebrows suggestively. (Does anybody not from a black and white movie even do that?)
Mason was hot and patient. My kind of hero. But even he can't save this, which is just rubbish from start to finish, and with its lack of plot, suspense, surprises and proper romance (unless the heroine being a tease is your kind of thing), barely has reason to exist.
