ETA: Okay so I was a bit of an arsehole in this review. I didn't like the book and of course my big mouth just puts it all out there. The author of this book came and "liked" this review. She did not tell me that I was wrong. That shows all kinds of class in my opinion. Katerina Diamond, I'll read your next book just because you just showed pure class. <3

A one star may be a bit high of a rating on this one.

When I saw the warning on this book that it may not be for the "faint of heart" I couldn't resist that requesting button.
Palm Springs commercial photography

I read some jacked up stuff so I figured I was good to go. The story is about a serial killer who is getting all gore happy with some old guys who aren't the nicest people around.

Palm Springs commercial photography
I can handle that stuff in my sleep, so in my opinion. (Which is worth about 1.5 cents) The warning was a tad bit overboard. There is a rape scene for those of you that have that as a trigger. (it's not horribly graphic)

The thing about this book is..it's all over the frigging place.
There are so many points of view that I really felt like I should sit down with a pen and paper and take notes. That's work to me. I don't read for work. I read for pleasure. I don't want to have to figure out even what character is the one doing the action. The characters are alternatively called by their last name then their first name and my head hurt.
Palm Springs commercial photography

The book was somewhat readable in the beginning but the more I read the more I couldn't understand. The story kept running back to the past, then the present, then to a character's viewpoint that served to do nothing but confuse the story even more. I had a New Year's resolution that I would try and not DNF a book for as long as I could..but dang.
Palm Springs commercial photography

Don't think it wrapped itself up at the ending either. I had to read that part twice and I still don't know what the hell happened.
This book needs a good clean-up. I know I read an arc copy of the book and I hope that is not what is going to be published. I feel like Dan 2.0 is starting to be right and these Netgalley books are starting to rot my brain. FOR THE LOVE OF MANKIND PEOPLE DON'T LET 2.0 start to think he is right!

Booksource: Netgalley in exchange for review.

Now I've been told...by trolls..that I read books wrong all the time, so I'm featuring a five star review of this book. Because what the hell do I know.

With this book coming with the warning *not for the faint-hearted* I took it as a challenge. I figure myself to be pretty tough and unflinching after reading a lot of horror, graphic crime novels and serial killer chillers. Well, the book did surprise me with some of it's graphic scenes and content, concepts and torture/kill scenes that did actually manage to have me feel quite squeamish and uncomfortable. So if even a drop of blood get to you in a book this is not the read for you. If on the other hand you love a great psychological thriller with a good dose of crime fiction thrown in that leans on the dark side you will love The Teacher.

I really liked this book, not light easy reading by any means but it boasts an interesting plot with some very dark edges to it that really makes it stand out. The book switches POV and timeframes which I followed with ease, it's done that way quite cleverly as events happening in the present are very much tied in to actions and secrets from the past. Someone just wants the secrets of certain people punished, so let the punishing begin. Hold on to your hat as from early pages the book just sweeps you up in the story until you are desperate to know the why behind the who.

As Exeter suffers a rising count of gruesome deaths, troubled DS Imogen Grey and DS Adrian Miles must solve the case and make their city safe again. Gruesome deaths is an understatement, they are not terribly prolonged scenes but they leave enough imagery to put you off your lunch. It's not often I read a book where I don't feel sorry for the victims, but this is one of them.

It's not just all killing and spilling however, there are some powerful stories that run alongside the main story that all intertwine together at a crucial intersection point. It gives the book a sense of not just being focused on the one aspect all the time.

I liked a lot of the characters in this book from both the past and present. DS Imogen Grey is a fascinating character, a detective who has walked the line of pain and terror herself, partly moulding her into the woman she is today. She was instantly likeable with her straight-forward manner and I enjoyed following her and DS Miles on this case.

It's like a giant jigsaw puzzle, little bits are given, revealed and whets your appetite for more. I wasn't surprised by end outcomes or final reveals but they had also not been obvious fully throughout the book. It's a gripping read. I really enjoyed this one. 4.5 stars from me!

Revenge
The Teacher is an engrossing, thrilling and pacey murder mystery where the police and pitted against a brutal killer seeking revenge. The novel is delivered along 3 threads. One thread is a series of brutal murders, first a headmaster of a private school in Exeter by a mysterious figure. The following deaths becoming more and more gruesome. What is the connection and how do the victims know it’s coming? The second thread involves 2 detectives that have been paired together to investigate one of the murders. Each is recovering from career damaging incidents each coping with major physiological issues but both highly capable investigators. The third thread is a museum taxidermist that has a lot of personal and interrelational issues, with a background that you’re brought back to throughout the book. She has become significantly detached from the world and her relationships with other people.

The plot is well put together and rather than being a typical whodunit with multiple twist and turns, it is more a plot being slowly revealed because it is clear, pretty early on, who the killer is and who will catch her/him. Don’t let that put you off because layer after layer is revealed as to the circumstances that formed the motivation and modus operandi of the killer, and the background to the other main characters. Each thread tantalising interweaves and threatens to reveal only to pull away, ensuring the story is captivating and kept at a great pace. The characters are quite dysfunctional at times as they struggle with their past and the relationships they start to develop.

While the main plot is obvious there are other subplots and agendas being played out and it all had meaning with interrelating facets and never felt cliché. The ending is good and creates more questions that have you thinking after you’ve finished the book.

This is a tremendous story and very impressive as a debut novel. I’ve already bought her other two books.

What initially caught my eye was the cover and this -

“WARNING: Most definitely *not* for the faint-hearted!”

I don’t know what it says about me, but the darker the psychological thriller the better. I want to be scared, freaked out and left wondering what's going to happen next. That's not what this was. Not even close.

I barely made it through the first chapter before I contemplated setting this one aside and just moving on. I probably would have, had I not received a review copy.

This book was nothing like the cover or the blurb led me to believe. Maybe I missed something along the way, but the teacher aspect of the book comprised one chapter - the first one. The story went in a direction that I didn’t expect and I can’t say it was something that I had any interest in.

My biggest struggle was how many times the perspective shifted. It was so hard investing myself in the story or caring about any of the characters. Just when things would start to get a little deep, it would be on to the next person. It made for a very confusing story and not one that I enjoyed.

I didn’t find it to be thrilling, shocking or even well-thought-out. Sadly, this was a huge miss for me.

“WARNING: Most definitely *not* for the faint-hearted!”

Now how could I resist this kind of statement? I like gruesome and I like the idea that there’s a different kind of psychopath out there. And while there were several gruesome deaths, it was the plot and character enrichment that drew me in and kept me there for the duration of the book.

The book is told by many people … more like a series of short stories. It was a bit confusing at the start but soon became clear where I was being lead. The individual stories bounced from ‘back then’ to the present where DS Adrian Miles and DS Imogen Grey are investigating.

What ties all these deaths together? That is what keeps the reader glued to every page. Without giving away anything, by the end of the book I was rooting for the bad guy.

This does not read like a debut novel. The plot is intricate, but strong. The character development was drawn by a fine hand. Secrets and lies abound at every corner. Throw in a few corrupt cops and you have a substantial police thriller.

I highly recommend this one to anyone who likes not only police thrillers, but psychological suspense.

Many thanks to the author / Harper Collins UK / NetGalley who provided a digital copy in exchange for an honest, unbiased

The Teacher begins with a teacher receiving a package that somehow tells him that his fate is sealed. That night a man comes and forces him to hang himself in the school where he is found the next day. But our teacher had secrets, he liked young boys. Thus begins the reign of a serial killer who targets those with secrets. As the gruesome deaths pile up DS Imogen Grey and DS Adrian Miles must solve the case.

The entire idea behind this story is one that I should have loved, unfortunately I ended up rather bored with the story fairly early on and found it just confusing to read. The book switches between multiple points of view and also switches from the present to the past between each chapter.

Normally those things I would find add to the suspense and intrigue of a story but with the style of this particular book I was finding myself lost trying to even figure out who was who and forgetting if I'd read about someone before or not. I kept having to flip back and remind myself was this the present or the past. Who is this person and why am I reading about them? The story just didn't have a good overall flow for me.

I think that I'm in the minority in not liking this story but it just wasn't for me, felt really disconnected the entire time I was reading and was never drawn in to care what would happen or how it would turn out. 2 stars for the idea behind it, just would have liked a bit more depth given to characters before being tossed into another chapter with a new person and having to struggle with figuring things out.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

When someone tells you 'not to do that', you question it.
When someone says 'not sure if you will like that book'
Then when you hear "not for the faint hearted" my stomach dropped at the same time as my brain kicking in........take that challenge, go on, you know you want to, you know friends who have read this and said its not a book to be missed.

So......I blame you!

I also say....thank you!

Because this is a read certainly that will keep your stomach churning, this will keep your mind ticking, this will keep you up all night in more ways than one and if you, like me, have a vivid imagination you will be seeing this play out in your minds eye.

Brain twaddling fab. Loved it.

The author has structured a book here that has kept the attention of the reader feeling sick, feeling in awe, feeling yuk, feeling, well, that was deserved, feeling or horror, then feeling of satisfaction.

Its a raise up, its a plummet down
Its a roller coaster of events that will iron out, but not just yet.........

Fab, one of my top books this year without a doubt.

Interesting read is "The Teacher"

It warns that this is not for the faint hearted. I would say nope it definitely is NOT for the faint hearted. If you can't cope with descriptive random violence you may be in trouble. However that aside, basically if you can cope with a bit of Hannibal Lector style you'll be fine - its a great psychological thriller, possibly with a few too many points of view but you get used to it.

The Teacher is a fast and furious read of the type that will keep you up at night - not only because you really want to know what the heck is going on but because it may induce a kind of nightmare twilight state in you where sleeping doesnt really seem to be the best option just in case...

The narrative jumps past to present and aroundabout as people die in very violent ways - but why, who, what has started all this - THAT is what will keep you turning the pages. Katerina Diamond has a particularly visceral way with words and has a great eye for plot development and character, she also is very obviously not afraid to push the boundaries.

I'm not sure that I loved it. I definitely didn't hate it. I think it will divide opinion on whether or not some of the more violent aspects of it are there for the sake of it rather than adding to the story - hmm - one way, or another way, every reader will think for themselves.

Do you dare? Well I did and I have emerged unscathed. The Teacher is one to watch...

Happy Reading Folks!

"...You know the only thing left in Pandora's Box was hope. Some people believed that's because hope is the most evil emotion of all. When hope fails, all that follows is complete and utter despair. Without hope, there is no despair..."

Most definitely NOT for the faint-hearted indeed!!!

Katerina Diamond’s debut novel, The Teacher is a bone-chilling, gruesome and disturbing crime/thriller set in Exeter.

It’s unique cover says it all…
There is a serial killer in Exeter and he is targeting some of the highly respected and influential individuals, teaching them a lesson.
In this first book in the series we are introduced to Detectives Imogen Grey and Adrian Miles, each with their own troubled past, trying to make sense of the murders and unraveling some ugly secrets along the way.

This was one dark read and I’m almost scared to read the second one in the series! :D

This book is told through several characters, I must say in the beginning it was a bit confusing but I soon got the hang of it. This is a psychological thriller and we are told in the beginning it is "not for the faint hearted". Some parts of the story do become a bit gruesome but I did not find that any of this turned me away from the story, instead I felt it made the story more real. The best part of this book to me was the strong plot, characters and their development, very likeable and believable. There is a rising number of deaths occurring, we are given information in pieces and this is what makes you keep turning the pages till the end. Really enjoyed it.

In all my time reading books, I've never read a book that comes with a health warning, but apparently, The Teacher is not for the faint-hearted. It's quite graphic, don't get me wrong, and I've read of people who have put the book down, but I actually didn't think it was as bad as it was. About 16% in there's a fairly graphic scene, and thinking back on it, it kind of makes me want to puke, but the rest are sort of left to your imagination. So if you can get past that first scene, you'll actually have no bother with the rest of the book. But if you're prone to squeamishness, this book probably isn't for you.

I actually thoroughly enjoyed The Teacher, it's a first class thriller, and it took ages for me to understand why we were reading from so many different points of view, and who all the players were in the novel. But once you understand what's going on, it's the most amazing read! Honestly, it's truly such a clever novel and Katerina Diamond is a wicked good storyteller, and I love her flair for the dramatic and gruesome. Not only was it such a good story, full stop, but it leaves you with the worst moral quandary ever. Actually, I was entirely satisfied with the ending, but that's all I'll say because spoilers, obviously. This is one of the rare thriller novels to not be let down by its ending.

This was honestly so good. I had no idea where Abbey came into the novel, and when I did, I was gobsmacked. Gobsmacked. Ditto Parker, whom I loved. And I feared for the ENTIRE novel for his dog, Sally. ENTIRE NOVEL. If anything was to make me put the book down, it would have been dog torture, and it literally terrified me. Their story was amazing, though, and surprised me completely. The coppers on the other hand were awesome. I loved DS Grey and DS Miles. I'm hoping this is the start of a BEYOOTIFUL partnership (and maybe more?!?!?!) where they solve crimes in their own, amazing, enjoyable way.

The Teacher is a must-read. (As long as you're not squeamish, and if you are squeamish, I'm afraid you're missing out on an amazing book.) This was so not like any other thriller I've ever read before, and reminded me just a touch of the earlier Rizzoli & Isles novels by Tess Gerritsen. The Surgeon in particular. That one had me gripped and this one had that same sort of feel to it, but it's not like any of the newer wave of thrillers like Gone Girl or The Girl On The Train, or any other Girl-related book. This sits in a league of its own, and I LOVED it.

The premise of The Teacher sounded creepily intriguing and I was excited to get y hands on a copy. The book definitely turned down a path I did not expect and veered away from what I thought the story was about. It was a page turner, and the multiple POVs were interesting, though some were done better than other, but that tends to be the case, especially with quite so many. What took away from my overall satisfaction in this book is that I guessed almost from the start who was guilty and why, and then there was the gory violence that was quite grotesque and not something I like to read about. The ending was rushed and I was left feeling dissatisfied. Diamond can obviously write and create a creepy atmosphere and a wide cast of characters, however, this book was too dark and bleak for me and I ultimately did not enjoy it, I'm afraid, much though I hate to write anything negative about a book as I know how much work goes into it. I'm sure others will find in it what the author intended.

One word, Gruesome!

However, I loved it. I love a bit of gore here and there and this didn’t disappoint, it’s definitely not for the faint hearted.

From the first chapter your pulled in and it has you around the neck.

Pleased this is part of a series as I’ll definitely read the rest.

Can’t believe this is a debut, high five to the author!

Wow! This one was so difficult to rate!

Things I liked:
How easy it was to read the story! I also liked Parker and Abbey and was hooked with their story, past and present and cared for them more than I did for the detective duo!
Things I didn't like:
The detectives had plenty of time in the story but it was mainly about their personal problems and when they finally did catch up with the events other were the ones who solved the story for them! Their contribution was so little that I didn't really care for them!
Despite that it was quite enjoyable at some points I felt the story all over the place!
I'll continue with the second installment in hope that despite I didn't grew fond of Grey and Miles I'll like the other parts of the story!

Obviously the book didn't meet my expectations. Yes, it is dark with many bloody explicit scenes but that's it. Totally repetitive. Everything is clear from the beginning. To the extend of who is responsible dor everything. Also I couldn't connect with any of thw characters. As a general concept the idea of it is great, but poorly developed.

Dark, twisty, constant questions, who to trust, horrific discoveries- so right up my alley then! This is the first of the series featuring DS Imogen Grey and DS Adrian Miles who as two outsiders are perfectly matched as partners. As trust built between them and you learn more about them and their pasts so my liking for the pair grew. This is a novel about revenge and it’s very justified too, given what those who are horribly murdered in this book inflicted upon their helpless victims. The action centres around a museum in Exeter and it makes an excellent backdrop for the unfolding drama. All the characters are easy to picture and are well depicted and I couldn’t help but develop a liking for Abbey and Parker. We also learn that there is a massive conspiracy of silence in the area much wider than the drama here and I’m assuming the next book will address the many questions that are still to have an answer.

It’s dark, it’s gritty, it’s bloody and very, very good.

The Teacher by Katerina Diamond is the 1st in the Detective Imogen Grey series.

My Synopsis:
There is a lot going on in this one, and it isn’t until the end that things come together.

DS Imogen Grey has just transferred to a new police force, trying to outrun the mess from the last precinct. She is paired with DS Adrian Miles who is just back from a suspension when a case and booze got the best of him. They will have to learn to trust each other. After a while, it becomes evident that there is no one else that they really can trust.

There is a murderer out there, seeking revenge for what happened to him many years ago. He is slowly killing his abusers, in gruesome ways. It starts with a teacher, but it seems that no matter your profession, or where you are, if you are on his list, he will find you.

Abby works for the local museum as a taxidermist, and has a new assistant named Parker. They both have a past that they are trying to forget.

My Opinions:
Okay, I’m impressed. For a debut novel, this was really good. At first I struggled because the writing is a little detailed. Her paragraphs went on forever without a break, and I found myself skimming. I hate that. However, the plot was so good, and there was so much going on, I started to make sure I read every line, because I didn’t want to miss anything.

The characters were really good (and there are a lot of them). They all had the required depth to make them feel real. The chapters jump around quite a bit to tell the story from different perspectives, and different time-lines, but it all seemed to come together.

Be prepared for gruesome, because the author certainly didn’t shy away from the gore. It didn’t bother me a bit, but I know others are more squeamish than I am.

I loved how you really felt compassion for the murderer, even knowing you shouldn’t.

I am a little confused as to why this is the Detective Imogen Grey series, as it seems it is as much about her partner Adrian Miles as it is about her. Perhaps that changes in the next book. Either way, I love them both, and am looking forward to more.

I wasn't expecting much knowing this was a debut novel but this book has a lot of bite, very dark and twisted with a lot of gruesome deaths. I enjoyed the storyline, a lot of characters are introduced and the time frames jump from past to present but it doesn't distract in any way. The book took a detour very early on and went into a completely different direction than what I was expecting. A nice amount of suspense to keep the plot ticking and I found the ending satisfying but not completely surprising

The Teacher

I just couldn't stop reading!!

Not for the faint hearted, and so very true.
The Teacher had me hooked straight away. The first page drew me in and it wouldn't let me leave until I had finished the book. It's been a while since a book has had this affect on me.
The story is told through more than one person, skipping from the past to the present.
Very cleverly written, not your typical crime thriller at all.
Highly, highly recommend this book - I couldn't put it down.

I'm not normally a fan of the taglines attached to the books title. You know, the ones saying the book has a "twist you won't see coming" or similar. So when I saw this one I was a bit sceptical. I do think however that this is one tagline that really needs to be there!! It serves as a warning to anyone of a sensitive or nervous disposition that this book really isn't for the fainthearted. Thankfully that's not me but it does contain quite graphic violence even though that violence is very integral to the plot. So, if you are squeamish, then be warned as it also covers a rather disturbing subject matter in detail as well.

DS Adrian Miles has only recently returned to work after a suspension. He has been teamed with DS Imogen Grey, who also has a troubled past and has just been relocated from her previous police force. Together they set off to investigate the death of the head teacher at a prestigious boys school (where Adrians son coincidentally goes to school). When more deaths come to light, Miles and Grey face a race against time to work out why these gruesome murders are occurring and who is responsible.

It took me a while to get into this book even though it opens up with a pretty shocking murder! It travels backwards and forwards in time visiting multiple characters until it starts to settle down and the plot becomes clearer. The descriptions of the murders are pretty gruesome but I didn't think they were gratuitous, although I wanted to read with my hands over my eyes and singing "lalalalala" to block out the images and sounds I was imagining!

I adored the pairing of Miles and Grey. In fact, at times it felt like I had already met them before and I hope the author will seize the chance to write them another case to solve. I loved them as they were both flawed, messed up characters who both came with baggage but who worked together as a true team with totally trust in each other. Without them I don't think I would have enjoyed this book as much as I did. Saying that though, it is a truly difficult book to put down as there are twists aplenty that will keep the reader on edge waiting for the next mirder

The hype on social media surrounding this book will make it a sure fire best seller and although I didn't love it, it's a book that has really stuck in my head and I would be interested in seeing which direction the author goes in next.

After receiving a parcel and a few hours had passed the head teacher of an exclusive Devon school was found hanging from the rafters in the assembly hall. The number of gruesome deaths is rising so DS Grey and DS Miles need to get to the bottom of why this is happening. This is quite a gruesome book so not recommend for the squeamish

The head teacher of a prominent fee-paying school has been found hanging on school property. Suicide seems likely and foul play is ruled out. That is, until the body count increases and the intensity of the crimes raises at astonishing levels.
Disgraced Detective Adrian Miles is partnered with another 'rogue' officer, DS Imogen Grey, and together they try to piece together the lives of the victims while dodging false leads.
Meanwhile, the quiet life of a museum taxidermist, Abbey Lucas, is not all it appears to be. Abbey is harboring a secret and trying to escape her past. But while she preserves the bodies of dead animals, the bodies of humans are piling up...

This is debut designed for the strong-stomached reader. Graphic descriptions and macabre memories from the outset make this a deliciously dark novel. The unknown killer is giving a cloak of secrecy, both his identity and his motive, and the clues are drip-fed to us in varying chapters. The characters are a wonderful mix of nasty and nice, each with their own quirks and agendas. Detectives Miles and Grey are a great team, with their own shame and despair seeping into their investigation, albeit unofficially. The murders are intense affairs, with lots of blood, guts and symbolism, but each with an apparent link. There is food for thought at times with a nod to the darker side of life:

"Everyone has a secret behaviour they are ashamed of, something inside that constantly tried to force its way out. We all have something that will not be denied."

A serial killer is nothing new within fiction, but this story, along with its great police-duo, is up with the best of them. A bizarre narrative is balanced by clear and concise writing, endearing characters and a clever location (I'm a bit fan of museums and all the secrets and history they hold). Katerina Diamond has created a pacy, powerful debut which will have her readers begging for more from Miles and Grey. The Teacher is ideal for fans of gritty thrillers, more murky than mundane...

Well, this book wasn't quite what I expected, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It was a bravely written debut novel for the author as it was very graphically violent in places. The book is marketed as a psychological thriller, but I felt it more suited the crime/action/mystery - not a criticism, more of an observation.

When the headmaster of a prestigious all-boys school is found hanged, two detectives are brought in to investigate the case, and so the story begins to unravel. Despite the books title, the teacher in question is only part of a very complex storyline. There are multiple characters to follow and the timeline jumps from past to present, however the author subtitles the chapters accordingly and makes it easy enough to follow.

I enjoyed the main characters, although I didn't always understand their motivations fully. In particular, I warmed to Abbey, despite struggling to see how she fitted into the storyline at the beginning part of the book.

About two thirds of the way through, the book lost a bit of momentum for me. There was a lot going on in a short space of time, and I began to feel the writing became hurried. However, towards the books climax, I began to enjoy myself again, and was satisfied with the ending.

A worthwhile read for fans of crime fiction. I would like to see this book adapted into film, it strikes me as just the kind of police based drama that would suit a Saturday night!

3.5 stars.
The sub-title for this book states that it's not a book for the faint hearted. True, there are some gruesome descriptions of murder scenes, but they are fleeting and the story isn't full of them. Perhaps because I read a lot of crime, police investigations and violence type thrillers, it wasn't anything I hadn't read before. I found the underlying reason for the murders more shocking. No spoilers, but when I found out who the killer was, and why, they had my full support.

What let this book down for me was that some of the characters came across as cliched. There's bad upbringings, alcohol abuse and other troubled pasts that didn't come across as realistic. It all got thrown into the mix and at times was too much. There were also a couple of occasions where characters had things needed for the plot, just appear out of thin air when in their circumstances they wouldn't have them.

I did like how the story moved from present to past and back again. The time changes were well done and helped explain why events in the present were happening and why people were behaving as they were. I was so looking forward to reading this book but finished it feeling a little disappointed. The plot is great and I liked the way most of the characters personalities developed, but some elements of the writing let the book down.

Originally reviewed on Becca's Books.

When Avon announced the impending arrival of The Teacher by Katerina Diamond I couldn't wait to get my hands on what sounded like a dark and dangerous novel that would lead me down eerie alleyways and round in circles as DS Grey and DS Miles tried to crack the case as the victims slumped down one by one. The cover reminded me of old-school horror, and the blurb piqued my interest immediately. Once I saw that it was available on NetGalley, I couldn't click 'request' quick enough.

I will admit that it took me some time to get into this novel. Despite the gruesome beginning pretty much as soon as this book began, as the chapters passed by, I couldn't quite get a handle on the characters being presented to me. Not being granted that much time with each of them (although to be fair, perhaps that was for the best considering their pasts), meant that before I'd figured out who was who, and how each of them were related to each other, they'd been killed. For me personally, I love to get to know a character as much as possible although as the novel progressed, I realised that Katerina had chosen to tell The Teacher in such a way and, actually, once I'd managed to put the pieces of this cryptic puzzle together, it made sense for the author to do so. In fact, it was effective in the way that it was sharp, punchy and instant. The plot moved along rapidly and once I'd got past a certain point, I flew through the remainder of the novel, gasping for breath once I'd reached the spinning end.

It's true what Avon say. The Teacher by Katerina Diamond is not for the faint-hearted. In fact, it could possibly be the most graphic novel I've read (but that's not hard really, considering I'm mostly a romance reader). The author's descriptions were enough to send my stomach turning, so vivid and real were they, and when I say 'graphic', I'm referring to the removal of organs, lots and lots of blood, vomit-inducing situations and menacing circumstances. To be quite honest, the whole back-story of this novel wouldn't sit comfortable with a lot of readers but the unravelling of it, and the vengeance that takes place alongside that, worked seamlessly. Dark atmospheres and dangerous characters made this all the more frightening to read and had my heart racing in my chest as the clues and the mystery began to slot together in my mind.

I absolutely loved DS Grey and DS Miles. They worked fantastically together despite the differences between them and the fact that they didn't particularly want to be paired up. The relationship between them had its ups and downs, but side by side they slipped between the cracks and picked up the slack on the gruesome case unfolding in front of them. The murders became worse as the number of corpses rose and, I felt, it became more impossible to put down as the pages whipped by. I was hooked, desperate to figure everything out and couldn't wait for the moment when the big reveal would come about. Katerina doesn't hold back but I felt this only added to the punch of her debut with Avon. It stands out a mile with it's poisonous cover and the story within refused to let go of me.

All in all, The Teacher by Katerina Diamond left me feeling as if I'd just ran a marathon. As I mentioned at the beginning of my review, it took a few chapters for me to get to grips with the characters but once I had got to grips with them, I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed the mystery handed to me by the author. Her leading characters were brilliantly crafted and I do hope I'll be seeing more of them both in future novels by Katerina! As a starting point for me with this author, it has left me excited to see what Katerina Diamond comes up with for her readers next.

On that note, Becca's Books is awarding The Teacher by Katerina Diamond with four of my bookish stars! Grizzly, gruesome and shocking, it really was a roller-coaster of a read.

Special thanks to Avon Books and Katerina Diamond for providing me with a review copy of The Teacher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I liked this more than I thought I would to be honest, yes I suppose bits were a little predictable, two damaged lead police officers investigating the gruesome murders of a serial killer but, this was a little different and a fast enjoyable read if very dark. I have the second in the series and will be reading that one too.

Warning: This book has some really gruesome and explicit torture scenes so if you are squeamish or easily shocked you need to be prepared! The Teacher is a fast paced and gripping thriller with some freaky and gross killings. We are introduced to DS Imogen Grey who comes equipped with her own issues and dark secrets who is tasked with hunting down and stopping a serial killer with a really sick evil streak. There are lots of characters at the beginning and it does get a tad confusing, but stick with it as all becomes clear.

This violent thriller, featuring two detectives on the trail of a brutal killer, failed to keep my attention. Diamond's writing is very simple & the plot is easy to follow, but it reads rarher like an extended version of an essay that I might have written while at school. Although the story is set in Exeter, where I live, I still only managed to read half of the novel before giving up. Probably good enough if you've nothing better on your bookshelf to read.

Page turner . .

I really have mixed feelings about The Teacher it was a book I really enjoyed reading, but there was a small part of me that was expecting something far more gruesome, now this could be because I read such a large amount of crime books I’ve become accustomed to descriptions of murders that might turn other readers stomachs, but I really don’t think it was that disturbing or gruesome. On the other hand if you don’t like well described murder scenes this may not be the book for you I’m afraid.

To begin with I admit I found myself confused each chapter introduces new characters, so by the half way mark there were an array of characters that I found difficult to keep tabs on, but then it happened! The Teacher began to make sense and I realised just how clever the author had been, she set the scene and then cunningly bought all the characters together in a dark and troubling tale. From the title I pretty much had the plot worked out in my head, but rather like the book nothing was as it seemed and it wasn’t long before I realised I had been pretty much misdirected by the blurb.

The Teacher introduces a new partnership DS Imogen Grey and DS Adrian Miles, and I’m intrigued by the pair as I’ve come to expect in a crime thriller they both appear to be messed up, but I’m interested to see how there partnership will evolve over the series. The Teacher is very much about good V evil, I never expected to have any sympathy for a killer that could do such awful things to other people, but I did, as to the reasons why, well I’m not about to giveaway spoilers so you will just have to read the book and see.

Although I enjoyed The Teacher I did find it a slightly disappointing read, I think because of all the hype surrounding this book I expected something more, but in fairness that’s my problem and not the authors. I do think The Teacher was a great start to a new crime series, deliciously dark with an eclectic mix of characters and I will certainly read the next two books in the series at some point.
