This book is comprised of sermons on the Song of Solomon by the great Baptist preacher Charles Spurgeon, on the greatest of themes, the beauty of Christ. Spurgeon's love for the Savior is evident throughout these messages, and will inspire you to greater love yourself for He who is "the fairest of ten thousand."
Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1854, just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon, then only 20, became pastor of London's famed New Park Street Church (formerly pastored by the famous Baptist theologian, John Gill). The congregation quickly outgrew their building, moved to Exeter Hall, then to Surrey Music Hall. In these venues, Spurgeon frequently preached to audiences numbering more than 10,000—all in the days before electronic amplification. In 1861, the congregation moved permanently to the newly constructed Metropolitan Tabernacle.
This book was one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. Spurgeon is such an eloquent speaker and pastor, and is able to exegete a whole sermon from just one verse. The insights and implications he pulls from the text are encouraging, deep and true. I’ve never thought of Song of Solomon to be a book mirroring Christ’s love for His church, and this was a wonderful resource on that topic. You can feel Spurgeon’s love for Christ in these pages, and his passion for Him is most edifying.
