Kathryn Littlewood is a writer, actress, comedienne, and bon vivant who lives in New York City, works often in Los Angeles, and has a sweet tooth for pain au chocolat and sweet novels for middle-grade readers. This, her second novel, is a sequel to her first, Bliss.
The only problem with the Bliss series is that every time I read one of the books, I have an uncontrollable urge to eat cake. And cookies. Or any other baked dessert.
This is the third installment of the Bliss series, and I sincerely hope that it won't be the last! The ending left me hopeful that there will be more books. Although Bite-Sized Magic is part of a series, it can be read on its own. In this book, Rose is abducted by a sinister man looking to take over the world through the use of evil baked goods. He forces Rose to perfect the recipes until they are as evil as he is.
Packed with light-hearted humor, Bite-Sized Magic is a delicious confection just begging to be devoured. Readers of all ages will love this delectable tale of cake-like proportions. It is funny, quick to read, and an all around treat! Kids will fall in love with Rose, her brothers (Ty will be happy!), and the comical team of assisting bakers. If you are looking for a great family read, give this series a try.
After receiving book three unsolicited, I decided to power through this middle grade series if I liked it well enough. Though I probably wouldn’t have picked it up on my own, I definitely do not begrudge the time that I spent hanging out with Rosemary Bliss. Like most middle grade, I think it’s probably only going to truly shine for young readers, but it was still enjoyable for me as an adult, or at least I play one in my daily life.
Bite-Sized Magic (Updated) It’s been two weeks since Rose has won the Gala des Gateaux Grands and returned home. Every morning, she’s awakened by the sounds of camera’s going off outside her window courtesy of the paparazzi. Rose says aloud she wishes she never had to bake again. Gus tells her “Be careful what you wish for. Wishes before birthdays have a strange way of coming true.”
After running of the paparazzi with a batch of Mind Your Own Beeswax Buttons, the Purdy’s receive a letter by Order of the American Bureau of Business that warns them to close their business IMMEDIATELY. It goes on to explain that bakeries employing fewer than a thousand people must cease and desist because big bakeries are suffering due to the unfair advantage of mom-and-pop bakeries throughout the United States. Gus looks at Rose and says told you so.
Twenty-seven days later, everyone in Calamity Falls has lost their spark. So, Purdy decides that since they can’t sell their baked goods, they’ll give them away. At least, until the law changes. Rose turns down, Ty’s offer to ride with him and instead makes her deliveries on her bike. On the way back, a unfamiliar man in a maroon tracksuit stops her to conversate about the unfairness of the new bakery law (which the Bliss’s suspect has something to do with Lily). Before she knows it, a bag is being thrown over her and Gus.
Rose finds out the two men that kidnapped her are looking for The Bliss Family Cookery Book. One of the men inform her that she’s at the Mostess Snack Cake Corporation. He’s Mr. Butter and the man that “brought her there” is Mr. Kerr. They had the assistance of a “master baker” who went to compete in a baking contest in Paris but never returned that had almost perfected their recipes. So, what they need from her is to perfect their five main recipes. Which is why they were after the book. Rose lies and says there isn’t one and since they won’t let her leave until she’s done baking, she agrees.
Weirdly, on the tour, she’s shown the first Dinky cake created (in a glass jar) and it still looks as fresh as the day it was first made. Mr. Butter says this is due to preservatives. In one of the warehouses, (in the Bakers Quarters) Rose is introduced to men and women that are smiling, but more from fear than happiness. They’ll all answer to her.
There’s the head baker Marge, the icing tech Ning, the CTM (Cake Texter Modifer) Jasmine, the VIP of fillings Gene, and the twins, Melanie and Felanie. Nut Chunk and Sprinkle Maestros. Rose is given the title FLCP Director. FLCP means Food-Like-Consumer-Products. Because of the mix or preservatives and chemicals, this is how the government classified them as Not Food, but Food-Like. Rose learns that she’s expected to stay there for five days. In her room, there’s a flowery smell that she can’t quite. She and Gus agree that there’s something not quite right about the place. She knows her family is probably worried by now, so Gus tells her about the secret network cats used called the Caterwaul. Rose helps him escape through a hose to get the ball rolling to pass word down through the cats until it reaches the Bliss’s that Rose is being held hostage but she’s safe.
The next morning, Rose is given their first assignment to work on (the MOONY PYE). Its described as a marshmallow and sugar cookie sandwich covered in chocolate frosting. Rose tries one. The chocolate taste like wax, the sugar cookies are stale, and the marshmallow taste like clay. She spits it out but finds herself craving another bite. Rose is alarmed to find the Marshmallow Crème recipe is from her family’s Cookery Booke. Also, Lily’s substituted the breath of a mermaid for something called Moon’s Cheese.
Rose demands to know where they got the recipe and they say it was created by the Directrice, but they deny knowing any other names for her. Rose tries to make the Marshmallow Crème by thinning out the Moon Cheese but it remais dense and won’t budge from the jar. Then a stack of mixing bowl’s accidently fall on Marge’s foot and she shrieks. The Moon Cheese suddenly starts to melt and takes on the perfect consistency of cheese frosting.
When Rose taste it, she’s filled with a fizzy alive feelings and instantly she (and the other bakers want more). Which is unfortunate because they only made one. Rose can’t get the taste out of her mind and it completely takes over her brain to the point she can’t remember anything else. Later, Gus returns with news that he wa able to pass the message to the Caterwaul. Unfortunately, Rose finds out Marge has eaten all the Mooney Pyes they made before they went to bed.
Rose finds out from Marge that Mr. Butter wants to enslave people. All the Mostess treats have special ingredients that make you want to eat more. The only thing that stops the hunger is eating more. Once the recipes are perfected, the new Moony Pyes will go into factory-wide production and be shipped everywhere. It’s then revealed that Mr. Butter works for the International Society of the Rolling Pin (the dark order of bakers that cause things like diabetes, obesisty, and cavities). They’re creating Mostess addicted zombies.
Marge also confesses that she did see the Directress with a skinny book with smudged pages. In her room in a space behind the dresser, she finds Lily’s Albatross Apocrypha and sees that Lily is about of the International Society of the Rolling Pin. She finds the recipe that Lily used to adapt from. Instead of using Moon’s Cheese in pastry cream, she stuck in Marshmallow Cream. She finds the antidote DRAGOMIRESTIS APRICOT JAM and cures Marge just as Butter and Ker arrive.
Mr. Butter wants to immediately put the Moony Pyes into production, but Rose says all the Moon’s Cheese was used up. Not a problem. He shows her his laboratory and rocket ship which he’ll send to the moon to get more. He takes her to a hotel on the grounds where her family is waiting. He lets them (and her) know she won’t be leaving until she’s done with the recipes. When he gets her in private, Rose sees it’s a blackmail. If she doesn’t make the recipes *to kill for* he’ll kill her family. (Oh and she finds out they also use magical ingredients but they produce them in the lab with technology). Before they get to the hotel, Rose notices a red shack on the edge of the property, but when Rose asks about it Mr. Butter brushes it off.
The next recipe given is Glo-Balls (coconut covered chocolate balls in bright colors). When Rose tries one, the frosting tasted like shredded tissue paper, the chocolate cake tasted like gluey ash, and the creamy filling tasted like frothy, warmed-over saliva. And it was all sickeningly sweet. Rose uses the recipe for FAMINE CAKES and the antidote of BUNNY BUNS. They’re able to steal the two ingredients needed (the Benedictine Bunny, and the Hag O’ Mist). But the Hag O Mist comes for Rose’s (innocent) heart but the bakers trap her in a jar.
The hag escapes while the Bunny is giving the blessing and she almost eats it but Gene blast her open mouth with preservatives and she explodes. The bakers devour the Glo-Balls and stuff themselves sick. Rose realizes that she has to give them rabbit’s feet along with the antidote to cure them. Two people enter the room, but it’s not Mr. Butter and Mr. Kerr. It’s Tye and Sage. Rose tells them what’s going on. Then Mr. Butter and Mr. Kerr come up and Rose hides her brothers. All the bakers pretend like they can’t get enough and say that they’ve eaten them all. Mr. Butter (who doesn’t even eat sweets) declares the batch divine!
Before leaving he speeds up the assignment and tells her to perfect Dinky Doodle Donuts by this evening. Tye and Rose want to go back to the “Pastry Bag” Hotel but don’t have the key. So, they investigate the shack Rose saw earlier. It turns out to be Mr. Butter’s childhood home. They come across his diary where he talks about getting invited to join the International Society of the Rolling Pin and that he will use the knowledge to build a huge corporation and that he’s related to them. Since they can’t find the key, they return to perfect the Dinky Doodle Donuts.
For this recipe Lily used as an inspiration PUPPETERS POPOVERS and the ingredient GRIGORY DRIMINi’s voice. When the tray is pulled from the oven and a half a dozen donuts given to the bakers, their eyes glaze over and they stand perfectly still. Rose and Tye leave to find an ingredient for the antidote (Capsules of Time) and run across a meeting of the nternational Society of the Rolling Pin. Rose finds out they were who created the law that closed their bakery. The president says that the only have one more threat to eliminate Kathy Keegen.
Mr. Butter tells how they’ve been working to prefect their five key recipes. He says Lily Le Fey unfortunately after her loss didn’t return, but they found another baker with a true understanding of kitchen magic and in three days they’ll have reached their goal. He’s invited Kathy Keegen to visit the factory in three days for a joint press conference. There they will try the others baked goods as an act of friendship and the first customer for their perfected recipes will be Kathy Keegan. Once she’s eaten the treats, she’ll become a Mostess-obsessed zombie.
They make it back to the test room, but weren’t able to get the Capsules of Time. Sage gives them the donut holes he confiscatd from the room full of them, and thanks to all the preservatives in them, they cure the bakers. Mr. Butter suspects Rose for the spill of donut holes and destroying his robot, but she assures him she was there perfecting the recipe. He tells her instead of having 2 days to perfect the last 2 recipes, she only has one.
The next morning, Ty, Sage, and Marge have worked out how to fix the Ring Things recipe by the time Rose’s has gotten up. Lily used the ROLLS OF REVULSION for this recipe. Inside them is a black substance that looks like rabbit poop and smells like dead flowers, old cheese, unwashed sneakers, and yogurt breath. Rose finds out the effects is the bakers are repulsed by the mere mention of Kathy Keegan. To get the antidote for it, they have to get the ingredient MOTHERS LOVE. Gus is able to get the key off Mr. Butter when he comes to check in.
Rose, Ty, and Sage find their parents and grandfather collect the ingredient, explain what’s going on, and return to the kitchen. Gus has had to tie the bakers down. They’re all given the antidote. Now they all have nothing but nice things to say about Kathy Keegan. For the final original Dinky, Lily used IN THE BEGINNING: THE TRUMPINS CURSE, The ingredient is a ginger root. When Lily used it, it made them roll on the floor and kick their feet. As soon as she unscrewed the lid, a foul smell filled the entire room—it smelled like a mixture of gingerbread and rotten eggs. It causes some of the bakers to fall on the floor and writhe. Others start to fight. Rose throws a BROTHERS STONE into the batter. s the giant metal paddle churned the batter, the surface became like a shimmering mirror. Rose could see two boys, both with red hair, wearing old-fashioned tunics and knickers, doing a secret handshake, with a lot of laughing and stomping and turning. Then the vision went dark, and the chocolate batter returned to normal.
When she gives the fighting men the cookies, they the same secret handshake that the two redheaded brothers had done in the vision. They put each of the five snack cakes under a bell-shaped jar. They make a plan to disguise Ty as a Kathy Keegan and use the Caterwaul to keep her from coming. Kathy Keegan sums up what happens nicely so I’ll use her summary of what happens when the real one arrives. “"Upon my arrival, I find a teenage boy in a wig impersonating me, and I am accused of being a man. Then another young boy perpetuates a messy robot dance party.” After all this, Mr. Butter tries to continue with the scheduled event and tries to offer her the snack cakes. At the beginning of the book when Ty and Sage were going through fan mail one of the letters was from Kathy Keegan, and she brings this up to Rose saying she wrote her and she never got an answer back.
While Mr. Butter was distracted Marge took the corrupted treats and stuck them in her bag. She switched them for the one with the antidotes. Mr. Butter takes the ones on the tray and says they’re just for display and retreats the ones from Marge’s bag. Nothing happens when Kathy eats her Glo Ball, but Mr. Butter starts to sob. Marge explains she made another batch while rose was taking a nap. She threw out all the bad cakes and recipes. Then she put a heaping amount of Mother’s Love cream in all the cakes. the Mother’s Love buttercream fills in the holes where a person is missing his or her mother’s love. Katherine Keegan was clearly loved all her life. But Mr. Butter, now, he’s something else entirely.
Kathy and Rose agree to team up to verturn the Big Bakery Discrimination Act and get Rose’s family’s bakery back. Then they can make products that cure what the Rolling Pin Society are doing. Rose reads the other side of Kathy’s letter that asks her if she’ll come work with her to create new recipes. Rose says she’ll ask her parents.
By the end of the book, the Bakery Act is repealed and Rose’s family is about to have a grand reopening. Rose spends a a week with Kathy Keegan, where they had discussed important plans for the future.
My Thoughts: Anyone else in the mood for a Twinkie after reading this? Or is it just me? I liked the setting of this one and the play of making this the Hostess headquarters. I thought that fit nicely.
Some of the reference were easy to tell Mooney Pye (Moon Pies), Dinkies (Twinkies), Glow Balls (Snowballs), King Things (Ring Dings?). Some I wasn’t sure of. Dinky Doodle Donuts? And was Kathy Keegan supposed to be Betty Crocker? She was the only one that popped in my head that this could have been in reference too. Or maybe Lil Debbie? Does anyone know? Leave me a comment.
Interestingly on this read, I had the thought of how this story mirrors today and how all the snack foods that were sooo good years ago now taste like ABSOLUTELY NOTHING and how substitutes that don’t cost as much have taken the place of QUALITY. I mentioned wanting a twinkie in my opening question for the review, but the sad thing is if I were to buy one today it wouldn’t be what I remember from back them. It NEVER is! Has anyone tasted a Butterfinger’s lately. One word! DON’T!
I appreciated the little details in this book that might have been glossed over that stood out in my mind and made it POP. (I’m all about the details!) Such as Pastry bag shaped hotel, the gold-rolling pin shaped key, the laboratory with an endless supply of magical items). It’s things like that turn the story even more fun to read. And how ironic is it that I just want to see “Micheal” with my other mother and dad and there’s a part in the book where Sage does a dance to “Bad” with the Robots? I thought that was amusing!
Do you know what would be cute tho? If these series had the Bliss’s magical spell book for us to read. We get bits and pieces of it through all 3 books. AND in the back of it were the dark recipes Lily had. I LOVE THAT IDEA SO MUCH! Wouldn’t it even be fun if there WAS a Bliss bakery? That way we could sample for ourselves what we’ve read about.
The only thing I took issue with that didn’t make sense was that Lilly seemed to go out of her way to get the Bliss Cooke Book, right? (And then in the last book didn’t it end with the midget stealing the book? Did they get it back in the in-between She seems to revere both the good version and evil version and you want us to believe that she’d just carelessly leave the evil version behind when in the last book we saw all the trouble she went to keep the good version of the book hidden.
And then it also didn’t fit that Lily would be so *free* with her secret. In the last book when Rosemary confronted on her on national TV and threaten to expose her she wasn’t like “Okay.” She didn’t call Rosemary on it. Showing that she didn’t want the world to know about her magic. So why would she share it with the Mostess bakers? And for that matter the Rolling Pin Society?
Although Lilly wasn’t seen in this maybe SHES the one running the Rolling Pin Society. She might have left the book behind because it might have just been a copy, and she still has the real one. I’m sorry that this was the last book in the series because I really enjoyed reading these. If you liked these as much as I did and you have Amazon Prime, there’s an original series on there called Just Add Magic and it’s VERY similar to the Bliss series. Not identical but it has the same elements in it.

The one and only thing wrong with this book is it gave me the uncontrollable urge to eat something sweet. It was REALLY good! New unforgettable characters and unique recipes are introduced in this story. There is a new thrilling plot, as a new matter that once again brings the world's fate into the hands of Rosemary Bliss. You will be on the edge of you seats on the newest amazing book of the Bliss series. I hope it won't be the last!
I loved the Bliss trilogy especially the last book. Bite-Sized Magic of course stressed the importance of family love. During the third book, Rose has learned so much about her family magic and her own gift. She goes through many difficult choices and a dangerous time. But in the end, she is rewarded with her birthday wishes and the love of her family. Not to mention Rose saved the world, AGAIN. I loved these books and recommend to anyone who loves a cute and clever story line. Bliss series!!
Brilliant book to round out the series. I love the La Cage Aux Folles conflict toward the end. Thoroughly enjoyable and a solid critique of the food industrial complex.
Méltó befejezése a trilógiának.
Like the two previous books in the series, this one was just charming and full of humour and descriptions of delicious food. I think that I liked it the least, but it was still an enjoyable read and I think it's perfect for middle grade readers, as the adventures of Rosemary and the whole Bliss family are lots of fun.
Langsung lompat baca buku #2. 🤣 Well, bisa ngikutin sih ya.

Another extraordinary and delicious adventure awaits with bigger challenges. This time, against a more mischievous antagonist. The ending is out my expectation. This book just makes me crave for confections and cakes!
Selalu suka deh sama buku seri Bliss Bakery ini. Walaupun buku bocah tapi detailnya OK n lucu banget, apalagi soal masalah cemilan. Instan laper.

This was my least favorite of the 3 Bliss novels. Though I still thoroughly enjoy the characters and Littlewood's writing style, this plot seemed way out of left field.
While I am all for encouraging young people to avoid preservative laden, processed foods, this tale was over the top with the evil "Mostess Snack Company" and poorly connected to the first 2 stories of the series. Several elements made no sense based on what we know from the previous books. Anyway, there were just too many elements that didn't fit, or just plain didn't make any sense.
This is still a fun series of books for tweens that love to read, just like mine.
Disanalah kisah Rose dimulai...
It is with a sense of relief that I finish this series...though the author did, of course, put in a tiny little ominous bit from semi-evil Aunt Lily to hang over the ending just as a way to leave the series open. Aunt Lily seriously needs to be MORE; she either needs to commit to being all evil or coming around to loving the family and leaving the bad guys. This wishy-washy non-bad guy that she is really doesn't move me. Bad guys need to be BAD.
Finally got to see Rose work with her brothers here and come into her own some, but hoo boy, did it take for-ev-er to happen! I wish that I could love this series, but I was constantly forcing myself to just get through the books because of the low self-esteem issues, the family issues, the writing dragging throughout, the trying to hard to be poetic, etc.
This book was so fantastically written that I could not put it down. The characters were complex, the plot was intriguing and the book was overall exciting. My favorite characters were Sage and Ty Bliss who are Rosemary Bliss’s brothers. They were sort of the comic relief of the story. I also really like Marge. Going against her boss must have taken a lot of courage. She came through in the end with the antidote treats. The author’s creativity lead to many things in this story like the talking cat and the secret chain of cat messaging called Caterwal and the hotel for hostages as I like to call it. My favorite parts are when Rose, Ty and Sage ride the flying squirrels to get away from Mr. Butter and when Ty dresses up as Kathy Keegan to make sure the treats look real. Overall this is a great book and I totally recommend it.
