Man I found this while looking around my dressor that I keep old books in. And man is this a trip through memory lane, with the cover that has art from games relevant only to the year it was made. All the random stickers my copy had that I got from Elementary School. Reading through this and man, it's such a time capsule of this weirdly specific era of gaming, Nintendo was struggling with the Wii U and didn't have that much big releases due to them preparing the Switch for next year, toys to life has tons of focus here yet it was on its way out around this time, Minecraft Story Mode is on the center of the cover, a game that can't even be officially played anymore, like their top __ lists have such weird picks, like their top 10 Street Fighter secret bosses having Q at number 5, a cool fan favorite, then Oni and Gouken, probably because they were recent, then Evil Ryu and Akuma, because they're the most iconic. Their top levels list has timeless picks like Super Mario Bros' 1-1 and Sonic 1's Green Hill Zone, and cool oddball picks like Turbo Tunnel from Battletoads, but then the Midway level in LEGO Dimensions, "China" from Street Fighter IV, the Aquarium from Octodad, and the Minecraft Overworld, or their top 5 indie games list having No Man's Sky (before all the updates) on it, or their toughest enemies list being: Long Gui from Final Fantasy XIII, The Enderdragon, Slig from Oddworld, the Litch King from World of Warcraft, a Goomba, the Turrets from Portal 2, Darth Vader from Star Wars Battlefront, Plague Knight from Shovel Knight, and Darknut from Zelda Twilight Princess (They specify the HD version). I wouldn't be surprised if some, if not many, of the games represented in this book were promotions for recent games they got paid for. I wonder if behind the scenes there was a tug of war between people who wanted to pick timeless choices that everyone agreed with and cool oddball picks, and some who just picked stuff from the most recent games. Or maybe the people behind this just didn't care and made their choices from what was popular or recent or could find on search results. oh yeah it also had art and screenshots from MVC3, absolute cinema... Wait was this made before the MVCI reveal and UMVC3 re-release or after?
I'm an occasional gamer, but when I decide to play I do so intensely over the course of a few days. I enjoyed this book and I now recommend it to all the gamers I know or new ones I meet. This book features the most popular and hot new games over a 2 or 4 page spread. I also includes 'Top 10's' of all kinds of subjects, like weapons, graphics, levels and so on. They have captions from many popular online gamers and even a few pages dedicated to info and facts about ESports.
This book almost reads like a magazine. You can read just to pages that interest you, or from cover to cover. There is no wrong way to use this guide. Every page has dozens of colour photos, nice layouts and is full of tidbits, info and facts. By skimming this book you are very likely to find new games that will catch your eye. This ones is a must have for all gamers!
