NY Times bestselling children's book author: GODDESS GIRLS series + HEROES IN TRAINING series (w Suzanne Williams); THIS LITTLE TRAILBLAZER a Girl Power Primer; ZERO THE HERO; I AM THE SHARK. Lucky to be doing what I love!
Yeah also don’t recall this one. I know this is Grimtastic Girls, but where’s my boy Hansel at? #malediscrimination? Just kidding. Hansel weighed her down she could’ve reached her full potential. I mean she was the one who saved him like- 🪱🪱🪱🪱worms
{My thoughts} – It saddens me to see this particular series come to an end. I’ve a great interest in fairy tale retellings and I thoroughly enjoy sharing them with my children.
The conclusion of this series is wrapped up nicely per say. I think that should the authors decide at some point to continue the storyline, that it should be fairly easy for them to pick up where they’d left off.
Gretel is the main character in this book and she plays her part fantastically. She even sort of follows true to her actual story which was interesting to read and see how it had been tied into the book.
I highly recommend this book and series to anyone that enjoys reading fairy tale retellings. I promise it’s an incredibly well written series that your sure to enjoy!
All Gretel wants to do is hike and work on her hiking guide, but everything keeps getting in the way, from the weather to the strange, mean girls at school. The E.V.I.L. Society is up to something bad, and Gretel is in danger…especially once she runs into a candy cottage.
What I Loved:
GRETEL PUSHES BACK in the eighth installment of the popular Grimmtastic Girls series, which does quick reimaginings of popular young women in fairy tales. Though this is several books into the series, since each focuses on a different character, it’s easy to catch up to what’s previously happened. This time we hear Gretel’s, from Hansel and Gretel, story. The twists on the original tale are creative and fun. The relationship between Gretel and her brother is quite the realistic sibling relationship, full of bickering but underlying affection. The best part about the story, however, is the positivity about finding and exploring your passion. Gretel loves to hike, and she has her own goals about the outdoors and what she wants to do with her passion.
What Left Me Wanting More:
While there is much to enjoy in this story, the characters do rely fairly heavy on gender norms in parts. Having that isn’t necessarily a negative aspect, but it would have been nice to see some diversion from them.
Final Verdict:
GRETEL PUSHES BACK is a nice addition to the Grimmtastic Girls line-up, excellent for young readers, especially those who love lengthier chapter books.
This book is alright. Better than the one about Snowflake, but not like the one about Goldilocks (my favourite) or so exciting... I really love that many nursery rhymes are referenced, but overall about the series I don't understand this: the children in this Academy know they are fairy tale or nursery rhymes characters, but do not they know from which one? And they do not ask or read to be aware of them? I must admit I have not read books 1 to 5, but I don't think my doubt would be banished had I read them...
