I devoured this book in just 3 evenings! It was a compelling read that kept me wanting more. I was shocked to learn this was Celeste Ng's first novel as the writing style was superb more what I have come to expect from second or third books.
I was drawn to this book in the book store so I started it as soon as I got home. On the surface, this book is a mystery revolving around the Lee family a mixed race family in 1970's America. What led to the death of Lydia Lee, a sixteen-year-old honor student with (supposedly) everything to live for? In reality, the book goes much deeper, into the lives of each member of the family. By the end of the book, the reader has a really good understanding of each and every member of the Lee family and sympathizes with each character. The book covers some controversial topics that were commonplace in the 70's including racism and sexism. We were given a true insight into how a mixed race family lived in that time. The novel tells the story from the views of several of the characters and it did this in a really great way you were never confused over who was leading the story at the time and it added a great depth of understanding to the characters. The ending to the story was not as I expected and added a great twist.

A 5 Star book well worth a read!

My, the thoughts and feelings people sharing the same household can keep from each other. Open, honest discussions would have saved this family grief. Chap 3: "The minister reads the twenty-third Psalm, but in the revised text: I have everything I need instead of I shall not want; Even if I walk through a very dark valley instead of Yea, though I talk through the valley of the shadow of death. It feels disrespectful, a corner cut." Chap 5: Now she looks down at the two tiny boxes, caught in the hammock of her skirt, and the outlines of Lydia's life -- so sharp and clear before -- begin to waver.

Maybe it's the culture but I don't think so since it was a middle child and girl that the family doted upon. I found this book very sad that parents could treat each child so invisible. I keep push through looking for character development and that never seemed to happened. Feel as if I missed something in this book.

Hard to stay interested, but once the book finally came into full circle there was a very strong & enlightening message for parents to take the time to be aware of. Honestly if you can hold on this is a read for every Mother or Father to be.

Really people just talk to each other. This was a hard book to read as it will be 6 years tomorrow that I lost my 16 year old niece to a car accident.

Lovely book about lost ambitions, about wanting to please and about valuing people for their preciousness.

If only this family had shared thoughts and dreams and expectations. Too many secrets. A tragic story of racism, some real and some perceived, I believe, and the devastating effects on a family.

This was a thought provoking deep book. It digs deep into a family that doesn't fit in. It shows how good intentions can tear up a family.
