The View from the O-Line is an NFL narrative that has yet to be told, about men who game-in and game-out take grueling physical punishment without the expectation of fame and media attention. These are the men who make up the offensive line.
Howard Mudd spent more than forty years in the NFL, first as a player and later as a coach. His narrative anchors this work while more than twenty current and former NFL players-including Nick Mangold, Jeff Saturday, Frank Winters, and Jackie Slater-executives, and officials, add their richly told stories that chronicle the biases faced and overcome by those in this intricate and underestimated position, weaving together an admirable new image of the men playing the sport for reasons beyond simple glory. Clever in craft and modest in spirit, these unheralded players wield the power to make or break a game.

Good book if you enjoy football and want to learn more about the offensive line.
This book's content mostly comes from interviews with past players who were coached by the author (some of them are still playing). The majority of these interviews tell little stories about playing O-line in the NFL (how each player got drafted, who their coaches were, etc.) The stories are pretty entertaining and funny.
I was hoping this book would go somewhat in-depth into the strategy of playing offensive line. I'd say out of the 300+ pages in this book, about 50 were dedicated to this area. I did learn more about topics such as blitz pick up, zone blocking versus gap blocking and the differences between pass blocking using a vertical set and a horizontal set. Really interesting stuff. It definitely gives you an appreciation for how cerebral these guys are and how much mental power it takes to do their jobs.
Overall, this was a fun book with some insider knowledge that any big time NFL fan would enjoy.
I blew through this book, which was mostly a collection of thoughts from offensive linemen. From the description alone, you should probably already know whether you're going to like this book or not.
The Offensive Line is the base of any football team, nothing can be succeeded without the five big guys in the trenches. A football team without a good O Line is a losing one. Howard Mudd and Richard Lister’s “The View From the O-Line” is a great book that really shows the importance of the Offensive Line on a football team. It is loaded with tips and tricks on how to become a more effective linemen. I give this book a 9/10, I gave it this rating because of how easy it was to understand the technique needed which all professional players use in game. One great aspect of this book was that it was written by Howard Mudd, a former Offensive Lineman and current line coach for the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL. He had first hand experience that really gave me insight on just what it is like at the big level. I would recommend this for anyone who play on the offensive line, football, or just anyone who is interested in sports in general. It a great and informational read that will help me this upcoming season.
