Becky Esh has lots of spunk. Never mind that she’s Amish, she regularly confronts authority figures. Her beautiful singing touches those who hear her so deeply that even men cry. In Becky Meets Her Match, Linda Byler crafts an unforgettable character who is quick-witted, good-humored, and thrives on independence—but inwardly struggles with her own self-consciousness. Overweight at sixteen, Becky is frustrated by her inability to lose weight and anxious about finding love.
An opportunity arrives to leave her Wisconsin home and care for her ailing grandparents in Pennsylvania. Becky is happy for a change of pace and to avoid the drama that is sure to unfold as her slender, good-looking friends begin courting boys. Maybe her new responsibility will help distract her from her size and her own yearning for a date. But at the Christmas Eve party for the Amish young people, Becky unexpectedly gets the perfect Christmas gift. Shocked, she loses her confidence and leaves the party on foot, terrifying everyone when they realize she’s missing.

Linda Byler grew up Amish and is an active member of the Amish church today. Growing up, Linda Byler loved to read and write. In fact, she still does. She is well known within the Amish community as a columnist for a weekly Amish newspaper. Linda and her husband, their children and grandchildren live in central Pennsylvania.
After reading her Hester series and really enjoying it I was looking forward to this one. But I must say I was disappointed. The main character is 16 for the majority of the story but has the mind set of an immature 13 or 14 year old. Being that this is an Amish book there were things going on I just don't see as realistic to the Amish.
I have read many Amish romances, most of them I really enjoy. However, this one not so much. The writing seemed a bit too choppy at times and the story too simple. It felt to be a story meant for preteens. The main character, Becky, is young (which doesn't bother me at all), but she talked and acted younger than her years, in my opinion. She called her older brothers, "meanies." She was kind of childish for a sixteen year old. There isn't much of a love/romance story in it. However, it was very easy to follow and showed the importance of family, acceptance, and determination. I thought the book might be a sweet Christmas romance, but very little Christmas or romance was in it.
Becky Meets Her Match is a Christmas book written by Linda Byler. This has a fantadtic storyline and moves fairly quick once you get padt the first few chapters.
I enjoyed the characters but was upset for awhile with Becky's mother and sister. This story shows us that it doesn't matter what your body type is there is someone for everyone. Becky has a larger than life personality and it helps her get thru some difficult times.
I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I was not approached by anyone to post a favorable review. I have rated this book with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others.
Congratulations to Linda Byler on releasing another fantastic story for her readers to enjoy. I look forward to more amazing stories from this author in the future.
This is a light romance about two people in the Amish community. The romance plot probably took up....20% of the book. The female main character's consciousness that she's overweight, what she did about it, and how she felt about it, took up another 20% of the book. Description of the Amish way of life took up another 20%. And the remaining 40% was about how she blossomed into her gifts -- singing (the author really makes it sound like she was so good she could have gone professional,) and taking care of the elderly. At age 16, she took on the charge of caregiver for her elderly grandparents and kept at it, did a very good job of it, until the grandfather passed away a year later. I am so impressed at her level of maturity and capability. Teenagers probably have potential to be much more mature than what our social norms tell us to expect.
This book was too fixated on Becky's weight. I think the reader was able to understand how Becky stood out because of her weight during the first chapter, but it seemed to be the topic for most of the first half of the book. I also found it frustrating to have to go to the glossary every time Amish terms were used in order to understand the context of what was going on. This has to be my least favorite Amish book I have read.
I sincerely enjoyed this sweet story. I loved the way Byler described feelings, scenery, etc. Her use of description and figurative language brought such imagery to the story. It was a smooth read and so easy and fun.
I definitely did NOT like this book. I live in Lancaster County with Amish neighbors and friends, and this is way off base. I really had a difficult time getting to the end of it. I've read a lot of good books by this author and this is by far the worst. Very disappointed. I would not recommend this book to anyone.
What a wonderful story about how what you think is not what others think. Becky is overweight and feels that she will never find a beau or marry. When asked to help with her grandparents Becky reluctantly agrees and learns more that she ever would have thought. When the death of her grandfather makes her grandmother state she is going with Becky back home. Becky has hopes with one young man but after a year of being home she doesn't think he is interested. One Christmas she receives a gift of towels from this boy but he offers no more. Disappointed Becky leaves and on the way home she finds a dog that is wet and cold. She wraps the dog in a top and knocks on several doors and finds the dogs owners. She arrives home to find everyone concern of where she is at especially the boy she likes. Will they get together. Read to find out.
Becky is the youngest daughter in the family but she has always been big built and heaver than her mom and sister thinks she should be. Becky is strong and helps dad on the farm and where ever she is needed. Becky is misunderstood at the age of 16 but in two short years she comes to know what is important in her life. Her family also learns how special Becky is to the family and that looks are not what makes the woman.
I would have liked a more in depth story. Maybe there will be a sequel.
A sweet, uncomplicated book about sweet Becky, a young Amish girl. Simple, uncomplicated, and nothing that taxed my mind very much at all. Linda, the author, is Amish, and tells a realistic tale of Amish life. Interesting that obesity is an issue in their culture also.
Just a wonderful story by a writer with a gift for words...had me laughing out loud or wanting to cry. I read it in one sitting because I just could not put it down. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
