Meg Cabot was born on February 1, 1967, during the Chinese astrological year of the Fire Horse, a notoriously unlucky sign. Fortunately she grew up in Bloomington, Indiana, where few people were aware of the stigma of being a fire horse -- at least until Meg became a teenager, when she flunked freshman Algebra twice, then decided to cut her own bangs. After six years as an undergrad at Indiana University, Meg moved to New York City (in the middle of a sanitation worker strike) to pursue a career as an illustrator, at which she failed miserably, forcing her to turn to her favorite hobby--writing novels--for emotional succor. She worked various jobs to pay the rent, including a decade-long stint as the assistant manager of a 700 bed freshmen dormitory at NYU, a position she still occasionally misses.
She is now the author of nearly fifty books for both adults and teens, selling fifteen million copies worldwide, many of which have been #1 New York Times bestsellers, most notably The Princess Diaries series, which is currently being published in over 38 countries, and was made into two hit movies by Disney. In addition, Meg wrote the Mediator and 1-800-Where-R-You? series (on which the television series, Missing, was based), two All-American Girl books, Teen Idol, Avalon High, How to Be Popular, Pants on Fire, Jinx, a series of novels written entirely in email format (Boy Next Door, Boy Meets Girl, and Every Boy's Got One), a mystery series (Size 12 Is Not Fat/ Size 14 Is Not Fat Either/Big Boned), and a chick-lit series called Queen of Babble.
Meg is now writing a new children's series called Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls. Her new paranormal series, Abandon, debuts in Summer of 2011.
Meg currently divides her time between Key West, Indiana, and New York City with a primary cat (one-eyed Henrietta), various back-up cats, and her husband, who doesn't know he married a fire horse. Please don't tell him.
Oh how I miss this series!! I seriously can't wait for more Suze & Jesse<3!! I would have read this earlier if I realized it was available online, want to read it? Click here
I don't know why I never read this sooner, when I was rereading the series earlier this year. It's so short, so easily accessible on Meg Cabot's website, I should've read it earlier than now. But anyways, I read it now and it was amazing. The way Meg writes Suze's narration is just brilliant, you really see her awesome personality shine through. And Jesse is just one of my all time favourite romantic interests. I love Suze and Jesse together, and I love everything about the Mediator world. I just want more to this series, I could read short stories of it all day long.
So far The Mediator series has earned threes across the board for books one to four from me, so I didn't have high expectations for this short story. Yet somehow I've come away disappointed with Cabot. This is where I question when this was written. If it was written before Cabot had really developed the series then that would make sense. The development just isn't there, the character depth isn't there, the life of the story and writing consistency just isn't there. The story is just Suze constantly calling herself a "freak" in various ways and gushing over Jesse in the most cringe worthy manner. There I just saved you two minutes.
I would suggest readers skip it, especially if there not yet finished the series. What has me most disappointed with this is the quality. I wish if authors are going to go the route of having a supplementary short story that they make sure it's truly worth it.
Talk about condensing everything that could have fit into an entire book...into just a few select pages.
Wow.
Not good, of course, by any means, as absolutely nothing's allowed to sink in and get...well, any focus at all, but this had all the hallmarks of a typical Mediator story, Suze-snark included.
Just wish I could've had more of it, y'know?
For other readers out there: you really won't be missing anything if you just skip this.
This is actually my first time reading this super short story. Nothing much happens, but it's short and sweet. And UGH I LOVE JESSE!!!!!!!!! Anything with Jesse is worth reading to be honest, even if it is mediocre ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
This is a perfect little short story, and it's free on Meg Cabot's website! It's like a microcosm of the books, and all the qualities I love about the novels are present here. Suze is hiding her teenage angst, but she is also a very decisive person who gets things done. Jesse is alluring and dreamy. My favorite of Suze's stepbrothers also makes an appearance. There is a brief but emotionally powerful confrontation with a ghost. It ends with a bit of romance that leaves you wanting more. It was a lovely addition to the books, and it made me want to reread them.
The story was really short, and a bit scattered. The cannolis, prom date drama, and dead girl don't feel nescisary. Particularly because most of us clicked on the story for Jesse, and not much else.
13-year-old me would be so excited about this. Too short to rate. It's been so long since I've read about Suze and Jesse... Almost forgot how funny Suze is. I'm so excited to read new books from Mediator series though!
Pretty weak. Cabot uses the term "lovely" when referring to a recently deceased girl three or four times in the space of as many sentences, which is just lazy. Her tendency to overuse people's names during dialogue is also running rampant in this short (paraphrased example: "You're dead, Cheryl. I know that must be hard for you but, Cheryl, it's true. Do you get it, Cheryl?"). Also, I really feel the interaction between Jesse and Suze at the end is, while cute, out of character for them at this point in their relationship.
It turns out that I have, in fact read this. So I guess I just re-read it. It's good but not amazing. To get amazing you have to read the rest of the series. Though this does do a good job of filling you in if you have never read the other books (which was actually a bit annoying since it was such a short story and most of it was backstory).
A nice little glimpse into the Mediator world of Suze that I only recently discovered. Beautiful reminder of what’s to come, as I await reading the seventh installment of the series with Suze an adult now. This short story could also serve as a good sample for anyone curious about the original novels of teenage Suze.
Cute, but also weirdly depressing without much space to deal with the hugely traumatic storyline and then… boom!!… right into a love struck moment. It was a lot. Haha.
This (very) short story does nothing to advance the plot in this series, but it's a sweet little slice of life piece that features Jesse so it's worth the read.
I read this series years ago but apparently missed this short story. I was so happy to revisit the world of Suze and Jesse! One of these days, I'll be able to unpack my books and read these again!
Not exactly a book but a short story from Meg Cabot's fanpage. Dreamy, perhaps not exactly logically placed between 3rd and 4th book but cute nevertheless :)
