What would you do if you knew the person you’d fallen for could endanger your life? A quiet, uneventful summer filled with supernatural combat training is what I expected when my mother dropped me off in the quiet city of Rome, Georgia. What I found was an adventure, unexpected dangers, and the one thing I swore off after my ex shattered my heart—love. Intercrossed is a young adult shifter novel filled with adventure, thrill, twists, and curves that’ll grip you till the last page.
**Although Intercrossed is part of a series in progress, it is a full story and can be read as a standalone.**
If I was a teenager going all boy crazy, I think I'd LOVE this book. It's got lots of innocent touches and kisses. There is also some action and violence keeping things interesting.
My favorite part of this story are the characters. Maryelle is a strong girl and knows how to stand up for herself. I'd recommend this to young girls that love fantasy and romance.
I was given a copy of this book from the Goodreads Club "For Love of a Book" in exchange for an honest review (within thirty days of receiving and reading). This book moves along quickly so that the reader is given a lot of information via inner monologue. Depending on the reader, this may be a positive or negative. There are some fun one liners and pop culture references throughout the novel.
So apparently when I clicked on the book to update my status to finished the book I typed my entire review in that comment box and now can't find it. So I received a free ecopy of this book for an honest review and I'm going to try to remember what I previously typed. I loved Maryelle's character being a girl heroine! I wish there were more ya books like this when I was in high school because I would have read more than I did then. Cute love story that could be better in some parts. It was a fast read that left me wanting to see what Mily will write next.
I received this book from Milly Ly in exchange for an honest review. A fun, fast paced, YA read. I enjoyed the humor, characters and shape shifting world. Predictable HEA.
I'm a huge fan of paranormal romances but I found this book to be quite disappointing. I liked the overall concept of the book with there being werecreatures and different royal families. But there was one major flaw with this book which was the pacing. The story felt way too rushed. I felt like the plot was going at a breakneck speed and my brain had a really hard time keeping up with all of the plot jumping. Because of this a lot of the interaction with the characters turned out bland and I struggled to relate to any of them. I was hoping for an epic romance but that's not what I got.
With regards to the characters, Maryelle started out great but for a girl who has had her heart broken recently, she seems to fall in love with Phantom very easily. As for Phantom, I did not like his character at all. He came across as quite obnoxious and not at all swoonworthy or charming. Because of the whole insta-romance, I found that the relationship became too intense in such a short period of time which is not at all realistic. I would have liked to see both of them facing their insecurities and building up a sincere relationship. That being said, there were quite a few minor characters but I don't think they were developed much as they just came and went throughout the story.
Worldbuilding was non-existent at best which was another flaw. It would have helped to have some idea of the location and would have also helped with the storytelling in general.
The only parts I can say I enjoyed were the final chapters. There was a fair amount of action but by then it was too late. I would have liked to have seen it sprinkled throughout the book. There were also some revelations which were rather interesting. Overall, I think if the story had been paced out well and the plot revised, this book would have made a great start to the series. It had the makings of a great book.
There were a lot of elements to enjoy about this book. I loved the characters and Milly has definitely mastered a lot in terms of dialogue. She was able to convey a lot with the dialogue. Unfortunately this led to my main complaint about the book. Other than the dialogue, there are quick snippets to let the reader know the timing of events and that things have happened. There were a lot of unanswered questions for me.
This book feels like it is a really amazing start to something, that is just not quite finished yet. I love this creation of the world and that characters are great, but I want more depth to the world, more background information, more descriptions of locations and a better grasp of the timeline of events, because the dialogue of the story had it feeling very unrealistic in the romance of the book. I'd love to have this added in, and to have the ending action not feel quite so rushed, and have a bit more development as it was the start of a good action scene. I do enjoy the world that has been created and would like to continue along with the characters.
Overall I have to leave it with a 3 star in it's current state.
**I received a copy of this book for free thanks to the Read & Review opportunity of For Love of a Book
What's a girl to do when the one person she loves could also be the one to bring about her ruin, as well as endanger her life? When teenage were-coyote Maryelle gets dropped off in Rome, Ga at a training center for were creatures, she finds adventure. Swearing off love, she throws herself into her training. But what happens when she falls for the one she shouldn't?
The Review
I found this book to be a fun, fast paced read. This is a good clean book for teens today. I loved all the different were-creatures that were used in this. Milly does a great job of building up this world of this training camp and all the other characters. Romance came off kind of like an insta-love kind of thing but not in painfully cheesy way. I loved the main character and her stubbornness. While I was still left with a few unanswered questions, I feel as though they are ones that would be answered in a later book. A good target age range for this type of book is best described as a pre-teen to early teenage book. While i myself enjoyed it, not everyone may. I tend to read a lot of middle grade to YA books and it was perfect for me! Thank you Milly for sending me this book in exchange for my honest review 4.5 stars from me!!
Brilliant! I loved this book. I'm hoping there will be more following the story of Maryelle and Phantom. Enjoyed the characters and the story progression:) fantastic writing.
Intercrossed tells the story of Maryelle, a young woman who is able to transform into a coyote at will. It's an interesting world, where the conflict doesn’t really come from the werecreatures' abilities, but from the politics and hierarchy of how the various creatures organize themselves. That leads to the gushy center of the plot: Maryelle falls for a prince of the werecoyotes, and his society frowns upon him cavorting with non-royals like her.
This is very YA, and very romance. It contains everything you'd expect from that combination, and leaves out everything you wouldn't (e.g., no sex. It's not even clear if they got in any doggy-style sessions between all the drama). The dialogue is snappy, which is good, because it carries most of the plot and characterization. It's fast-paced and pretty short. I appreciated the rapid pace, because if it lingered any longer on any one plot development, it could easily have gotten too repetitive.
I can't give the book five stars, because I'm REALLY not the target audience for this (I got a free copy in exchange for a review, in case you're wondering how I came across it), and there are a few issues here and there, but I enjoyed this quick read. Fans of YA shifter romance will likely find everything they're looking for here.
I'm rating this as a 2.5 star book (In-between an okay and like).
Intercrossed is a YA paranormal romance book. The main character is a a strong minded very opinionated 16 year old werecoyote named Maryelle. While her mother goes off on vacation she is sent to Rome, Georgia for werecreature training and a test. This book is heavy with the werecreatures and there is a lot of testosterone in this book. If you are a fan of the alpha males this just might be the book for you. Since it is YA, it's more in the younger scope with clean language and no sex, just lots of kissing and hand touching.
Really to sum up the first half of the book, it's like Pride and Prejudice with werecreatures. In a way there are elements of Romeo and Juliet, because of the clash of some of the young loves, but do not compare the stories to this one. I really enjoyed Pride and Prejudice and Romeo and Juliet.
I was very annoyed with the all the cheesy romance and how Maryelle jumped in the relationship and so quickly with Phantom, yes, that's his name. Also, it's quite predictable. Maryelle doesn't trust her first instincts which is another annoying feature for me. Now, just to be fair, this isn't a genre I normally read. It's because I get easily annoyed with the characters with YA romance, I went out of my comfort level to read it and my biases will reflect this in my rating.
I'd recommend this book for those that like clean YA Paranormal Werecreature Romance. 12-15 year olds would be a good target range for this story.
* I received a free copy of this book from the author Milly Ly from the Goodreads Group 'For Love of a Book' in exchange for an honest review.
3.5 stars I actually really liked Intercrossed. I liked Maryelle and Phantom's relationship and some of the things he said were definitely swoonworthy. Really the only problem I had with this book was that some parts felt really rushed, it actually felt like it could have been turned into more than 1 book. I would have liked to read a little more about her relationships with her friends, including Alice. Some things could have been more developed like and some parts seemed to be skipped over to get back to I did really like that the idea of them being werecoyotes, very original. I really liked Maryelle's stubbornness. I found Intercrossed to be a really cute love story with some supernatural mixed in. I would definitely read another book by Milly Ly and I do hope she turns this into a series. I have some questions about what Maryelle became and think that would be interesting to read about. Overall Intercrossed may not be the book that I can't stop thinking about but I really did enjoy it.
I love a good teenage love-at-first-sight romance, especially when you add the paranormal to it! That's exactly what Intercrossed by Milly Ly is.
I received a copy of this book free from the For Love of a Book Group and/or the author in exchange for an honest review.
The Novel follows a classic rags to riches, fairy tale story line with a supernatural twist and makes for an interesting read. I can't say enough about this author's ability to write dialogue. It's a unique style that captivates the reader. I wish there had been a little more world building added in here and there. The little readers are given makes it difficult to visualize the surroundings.
I understand that this is the first book in a series, however, the last few chapters seemed rushed. There are multiple loose ends that leave the reader asking questions. I think the author missed the mark by not leading readers into the next book by hinting at a resolution to those questions, if in fact, they are going to be dealt with.
I would recommend this book to a young adult audience. This author has the potential to become a breakout artist and I will be looking to read the rest of her series.
That leaves me as a reviewer in a difficult situation. I feel the writer's style and story is better than a rating of three but not quite at a four. My official rating is 3.49/5.
This is a really cute little story, it reads very quickly- in fact I read in one sitting.
The story itself is "very" YA, a 16 year old must save the world, meets the love of her life and then must battle a great evil to metaphorically ride of into the sunset with said love of her life.
Having said that the magical and supernatural elements of the book and the world building were very well explored, which I appreciated. There are some impressive battle scenes with both human and supernatural battles, that fall just shy of the diabolical end of world catastrophe's... They do centre around ending the epic summer romance with strong Cinderella themes throughout. A common girl from rogue parents who falls in love with the Prince, and must not only prove herself worthy but must battle the evil Manucho of King (the Princes's Uncle).
Like I said it's very YA, but it was a fun easy read and I would recommend it as a solid 3 - 3.5 stars.
Maryelle wrote off romance and the thought of love, after her former boyfriend devastated her and left her heartbroken. Instead she set off for Rome, Georgia in anticipation of a peaceful summer holiday laden with mystical warfare exercises. Little did she know there would be way more escapades, unpredictable jeopardies and she would meet a new love interest, Phantom. These two spirited characters have great chemistry and are a perfect match in strength and courage. Intercrossed can be read as a standalone novel but it is part of a series, which is wonderful because it is very entertaining. It is passionate, romantic and fast paced. If you’re in the mood for a fun action/adventure love story then this one is sure to please.
The last part of the book's description states "Intercrossed is a young adult shifter romance filled with adventure, thrill, twists, and curves that’ll grip you till the last page," yet I didn't see it that way at all. It most definitely is a romance piece. Not just romance, but over the top, extremely cheesy to the point of annoyance, romance. The love story basically begins with lust, two complete strangers falling for one another based on pretty much looks alone, infatuated before they really know anything about one another. It all seemed very unrealistic. As far as twists and curves gripping you to the last page...where were those? I guess you could call a couple incidents that occurred twists, but you could see them coming a mile away, so it's hard to label them that way. One thing I found disappointing was how the main character Maryelle first traveled to Georgia for her training, yet through the entire book we don't actually get to read hardly anything about it or how it's going or any specifics. I realize this is a romance story, but it definitely was lacking in action, and I think at least going into the training a little bit here and there would have helped.
Another thing was the pace of the plot. It jumped around and moved rather quickly. Scenes of entire conversations and then the next scene suddenly is weeks later. Along with the pace, the lack of action or anything to help move the plot along made the read tough and boring. It was over halfway into the story before anything with any substance really happened. Even then, it was predictable, unfortunately.
The fact that characters were werecreatures has very little to do with the story. I believe they only "changed" twice throughout the entire book. More instances of their other halves, more action, fights...something, would have helped tremendously in my opinion. A little development of secondary characters would have been nice as well. There are a number of minor characters, but we don't learn much about them, and there is little to no development, so it is hard to feel anything for them at all.
Action did pick up a bit toward the end, but things just got strange. Some random wereserpent we'd never heard anything about before, somehow changes Maryelle into some powerful goddess. What? Where did that come from? There's no explanation as to why it is done, why Maryelle was chosen, or how it was done in the first place. Just an out of nowhere scene that very much seemed out of place. Even with the rise in action, the fight scenes were quite brief. I would have liked to see more of them, especially when mixing in the fact that the characters are werecreatures. You could do some really cool things with fight scenes; starting as human, changing to their other halves somewhere in the midst of battle. But sadly, none of that happens, at least not the point to really help give the reader a picture of what's occurring.
There was just too much missing from this book for it to be enjoyable for me. Too little action, over the top romance, a jumpy plot, and a lot of filler before anything happens. If romance is your thing, you may enjoy this, but as for me, I was hoping for a lot more.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Maryelle isn’t looking for love, but it finds her anyway. She arrives in Rome, Georgia, for a special intensive training course that she and all young were-coyotes must undertake before they turn 17. There, she meets Phantom, the crown prince of the were-coyote royal family. He immediately falls for her, but she takes here time admitting to herself that she loves him – in spite of him being a royal, in spite of him being the definition of “handsome”-- and owning one of every expensive car there is (including at least one prototype) -- and being a perfect gentleman. He is totally in love with Maryelle from the start.
It takes nearly the first half of the book for her to admit that she is hopelessly and helplessly in love with Phantom.
I must pause a moment here, and mention that I'm not a fan of romance, nor dark fantasy (were-creatures/vampire/etc). Nor am I familiar with the typical plot for a romance narrative. Does it usually take nearly half the book to establish a couple as hopelessly in love? I’ll give the benefit of the doubt. But I must say that, if not for Milly Ly's incredible storytelling ability, which made the job of reading this much more bearable, I suppose reading it would have been quite a struggle.
So... close to the middle of the book, I began to wonder, “As weird and wonderful as this existence is, isn’t there more to being a were-coyote than falling in love with another were-coyote?” Then the action began. She does get to use the special powers of the animal inside, and of course, so does Phantom. In fact, he’s got a few extra surprises. It becomes a roller-coaster of suspense and intrigue which comes to the surface when people that they trusted the most, turn out to be traitorous beasts (no pun intended).
So, my congratulations and thanks go to Milly Ly for making a book in a genre I don’t prefer, an interesting read for me. I'm quite sure that if this is the genre you prefer, you will love this book
I received a free copy of this in exchange for an honest review, which this is.
This is very much a YA paranormal romance that is a fun, fast paced read with the drama, passion, romance and suspense geared for that market, ie, no sex. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
Maryelle is a funny character. She is likable most of the time but doesn't always make very smart decisions. She has a lot of inner monologue but doesn't always explain why she does everything (which is confusing at times). To make matters more complicated - enter Phantom. No I'm not joking that is his name. He was a bit of a contradiction. Spoiled but goodhearted. Aggressive yet sensitive. His character could have used some rounding out but this is a YA romance chock full of teenage angst.
Plot
It is a romance that makes a good attempt at a plot. Maryelle is sent to Rome, GA by her family to pass a test. The entire plot involving this takes a back seat to what is happening with Phantom (both the romance and with his family). This book will not win any awards for its plot but I was pleasantly surprised at the attempt to make it more than just a romance - such as hitting on the socioeconomic and cultural issues within each werecreature's faction. Despite its softer touches at these harder issues, it is a romance at its heart, and a YA. Expect over the top moments and scenes that scream 'I'm a YA novel and I'm proud of it.'
Overall
This book moves fast. It grabs onto the reader and doesn't let go. It is VERY important to remember this is a young adult novel. If this was anything else I don't think I would have enjoyed it as much. The characters are over the top, the plot a little flimsy in some areas, but it is a solid YA read. Enjoyable in more than one area and well written. I actually enjoyed the fast pace and that the author didn't languish on the details. The characters are interesting but as with most romances, everyone takes a back seat to Maryelle and Phantom.
My biggest problem was with a few inconsistencies in the plot and character decisions and the rushed ending. I didn't love or hate the ending, but it conformed to the normal YA romance ending and was a little disappointing. That being said for avid readers of the YA genre, particularly romance, this was perfect for its genre. When the author decided to name it a YA romance, they were 100% right.
Rating
4 stars
Despite some glaring inconsistencies with both plot and characters in a few areas this was a well written novel that is an easy and enjoyable read. The plot, characters, and writing style were all within the YA romance genre, and all who like this genre will love this book! This author delivers exactly what they promise in the summary.

Intercrossed tells the hopeful story of one summer in Rome, Georgia and two star-crossed supernatural beings. Headstrong, closed hearted, Maryelle meets an entertaining ensemble of werecreatures, one of whom is an equally stubborn werecoyote who just happens to be part of the royal family. As days slip by and her frozen heart begins to thaw there are those lurking in the castle that will do anything and destroy anyone to get what they want.
This supernatural novel is quiet intriguing as not only does it not center around your common werewolves but includes many kinds of werecreatures, it also gives you a solid origin story and basis for the lore surrounding them. The writing of Intercrossed is solid and well though out, allowing the plot too slowly take form. There is an interesting pace taken once the story is underway but the real power of Intercrossed is its ability to illicit emotions from the reader. No mater if it is love hate or a little bit of angst the story is emotionally charged and will take you for a ride.
Werecoyote Maryelle has serious work to do as she trains for a test of her self-defense skills. Between training sessions, she finds time to enjoy pleasures every girl can appreciate: beautiful clothing, enchanting dates, and the attention of an adoring young man. If the hero’s more verbal about his feelings than males I’ve met, in truth, I’ve never met a stunning, semi-human prince. Maryelle’s wit and skepticism keep her grounded until danger strikes and her prince proves his mettle.
The author is exceptionally good at describing the reactions and emotions of falling in love. I’ve read unconvincing romances, but felt this one hit the mark. The story flows smoothly from beginning to end. I read the last page with a satisfied sigh and the warm fuzzies that make reading so enjoyable. For fans of YA paranormal romance, this is a must-read book.
