This started out so well, and seemed to have potential, but gradually got bad. First the writing was like a 12 year old in many ways, with explanations of everything in far too much unnecessary detail. It's just boring to read someone getting up, walking to a chair, sitting down, brushing their hair, setting the brush down...you get the picture.
It also started out sweet, with a young girl going off to teachers school, getting attacked by wolves on the way, recuperating, being away from her family for the first time...etc. All went along nicely with her first teaching position in a small town. Then once there was a wedding, crude talk came out, including the "f" word, and descriptions of lovemaking. Seriously? Why? To tittilate? It added nothing, it just seemed as if a good story went far south for no reason.
Meh. I liked the story, thus the 2 stars. But the simple way it was written, and the addition of sex, yeah, stupid.

Historical American romance set after the Civil War with a young heroine growing up to become a teacher and then her short teaching career until she has to run for her life from raping thieves. There is some awful events in this story with some sweet moments mixed in.
There is some back and forth in time because the historical story is supposed to be journals being read by a modern family member which seems too much for this author to deal with in a subtle way. I liked the story, but the writing is immature like a story written by a high school student.

Enjoyed it but there were some poor bits. Didnt need the whole start of Maria finding the journals she hardly appears again. Didnt like the cliffhanger end, trying to force me to get the next book. Possibly wont. That takes at least half a star off.

There are two things that have always decided if I am going to read a book or not. 1) The "about" this book has to catch my eye and not cause me to drift off while trying to read it and 2) I want it to grab me from page one - even though I have always found a slow starting book almost always ends up being a GREAT book. Red Mane's "about" was slow and it started off even slower, but the book had such great reviews, I decided to read it. Boy am I glad I did...most assuredly one of the best books I have read in a long time. I was so drawn in to Charlotte, her family and her friends that I wanted to see how the book ended, but I didn't want the book to end!!! I laughed, I cried, I got frustrated, I wanted to hit stuff and dance around. This book and this author really draw you into this time, era, and Charlotte. I highly recommend you read this book and I can't wait to read the 2nd book. Very well written - and it has it all, love, suspense, twists and turns!!!

I really enjoyed this tale. It was well constructed, the characters were interesting, and the plot complex and unpredictable. The setting is a time period I greatly enjoy, which certainly helped. I am looking forward to the sequel!

My interest in the story line rose and fell throughout the book. It's...nice...but it's not a keeper.

Enjoyed

It was interesting reading how Charlotte overcame the many obstacles thrown in her life. She is a strong character and is protective of those she lo.
