Kathleen Thompson Norris
232 books64 followersEducated at the University of California, Kathleen married Charles Gilman Norris, brother of the late Benjamin Franklin Norris, Junior, in 1909. She was a prolific author, producing over 80 novels in addition to numerous short stories and articles. Norris was a regular contributor to leading magazines such as Atlantic and Ladies' Home Journal. Her first novel, Lost Sunrise, appeared in 1909 and was immediately popular. By the end of her career her books had sold over ten million copies and made her the highest paid female author of her day.

3.75🌟 Not my top favorite of Kathleen Norris' lovely vintage novels, but it was pretty interesting and certainly had a LOT going on!
This romance about Jimmy and her quest to get out of her daily rut (of all-night dancing, night clubs, drinking and superficial friends) is a roller coaster of events that takes hold of you and doesn't let go!
I was constantly re-reading sections because I thought I had missed a page or misread something in the book. But, no...it was right..just so unexpected! I was like, "What just happened???"
This topsy-turvy story line is something I really like about Kathleen Norris' books, but this element in combination with a very, very unlikable male character forced me to bump it down a little in star rating.
I kept wanting to give Jimmy a "good talking to" because she wasn't standing up for herself against her rich, business tycoon husband, Gordon. Ughh...I despised that man!
But, luckily, in between the frustration and urge to scream at Gordon, I definitely enjoyed Walls of Gold. There's lovely descriptions throughout the novel, a cozy Christmas chapter, KN's wonderful writing and lots of touching moments that made me feel content and happy. I can't say that I loved any of the characters except little Billy, but I did feel affection for Jimmy herself.

"Last night in the restaurant you made me feel—funny, for a minute. I've always thought of myself as being carried off my feet by some man six foot four, tremendously rich, foreign perhaps—titled perhaps—
*"For about five minutes you were all that—husband, home, kids, everything"*
Timeline is soooo confusing. One minute the chapter ends on a cliffhanger and the next chapter begins a few months later. Alot of unnecessary details for unimportant things but missing details for important scenes. I didn't like Jimmy that much either. If you're looking for a book that makes you feel like you're solving a complex math problem, this is the book.
