Update:
When I wrote the above I felt Id provided enough information about the novel.
This novel is far more engaging than indicated above.
When the main character arrives from New York to Los Angeles, the West Coast is experiencing the strongest earthquake in modern history. He’s an odd, childlike man -possibly in his late 30s, maybe early 40s. But his quiet mannerisms are reminiscent of a child to those who encounter him as they go about their day.
No one ever entertains for a second that this unassuming, quiet man with a waif’s eyes is a stone killer for hire.
He completes his assignment and all his going well when, in the process of calmly walking away from the scene of his latest hit for hire he stumbles upon a street gang of Black youths busy terrorizing a middle-aged gentleman jogger in an alley. He watches for a bit, casually interested with no intention of intervening when he’s noticed by one of the gang members. They search him and find the gun he used minutes earlier and one of the punks pockets it. Then our lead character is shot by one of the gangstas and mistakenly left for dead. But he’s not dead. And he has to retrieve the murder weapon from the gangbangers before the cops bust the members and trace the gun back to him and the outfit that hired him.
And that situation leads to one of the most entertaining crime thrillers I’ve enjoyed in a very long time.
