When Grandma sends her grandson a backpack, he can't wait to fill it with interesting things. His toy train fits just right. His bock and his big brother's baseball socks fit perfectly, too. And there's still room for more, including his teddy bear, his mother's keys, and the family cat! It's amazing what you can fit in a backpack if you really try. Eve Bunting's lively, rhyming picture book is perfect for reading aloud and is happily illustrated by Maryann Cocca-Leffler.
Anne Evelyn Bunting, better known as Eve Bunting, is an author with more than 250 books. Her books are diverse in age groups, from picture books to chapter books, and topic, ranging from Thanksgiving to riots in Los Angeles. Eve Bunting has won several awards for her works.
Bunting went to school in Ireland and grew up with storytelling. In Ireland, “There used to be Shanachies… the shanachie was a storyteller who went from house to house telling his tales of ghosts and fairies, of old Irish heroes and battles still to be won. Maybe I’m a bit of a Shanchie myself, telling stories to anyone who will listen.” This storytelling began as an inspiration for Bunting and continues with her work.
In 1958, Bunting moved to the United States with her husband and three children. A few years later, Bunting enrolled in a community college writing course. She felt the desire to write about her heritage. Bunting has taught writing classes at UCLA. She now lives in Pasadena, California.
I didn't really enjoy this book and I don't think I will ever use this book in my classroom. Yes the author made things rhymed for the kids to make it more fun but I really didn't see a lesson out of this book.
This book is about a young boy and the wonders of his backpack. He goes around and collects things in his bags and describes them, even things that do not belong to him that he later returns. This book has consistent aabb pattern. It could be used to teach rhyming patterns. The young boy also used many descriptive terms and details when talking about his backpack and the items in it. This book can be used for a mini lesson on how to add details and information to your writing.
This book was too cute. A great way to start the 1st day of class with. It could also help with the shyness of the classroom if you do fun activities that go along with the book.
