The Tunnels adventure is far from over for Will Burrows.
In his quest to find his father, Will is plunged even deeper underground. And as if things weren't bad enough already in the heat and darkness, he stumbles across a Styx plot with terrible implications for the world above - and a sister who isn’t finished yet …
Roderick Gordon is the author of the Tunnels series of books. Born in 1960, he grew up in Highgate, North London, and eventually went to University College where he dabbled in genetics and listened to Joy Division. After graduating without the faintest idea what he wanted to do for the rest of his life, he spent some time in the wilderness when he played in a few bands, then somehow fell into a job doing corporate finance for an investment bank in the City of London. He genuinely thought this was all that the future held for him until he was made redundant in 2001. But Roderick surprised himself by working on a book with help from an old university friend and, in 2005, he self-published it as The Highfield Mole, which caught the attention of Barry Cunningham, founder of Chicken House, a publisher of children’s books. Following a period of editing, Barry republished it as Tunnels in July 2007. After intense media interest around its launch, Tunnels was published in almost forty countries and was a New York Times Bestseller, achieving sales of more than a million copies worldwide. Shortly after publication the film rights were purchased by US-based Relativity Media, and Mikael Håfström has been appointed as director. Roderick followed Tunnels with further books in the series, Deeper, Freefall, Closer, Spiral and, finally, Terminal in 2013.
He has just released a new book called Summerhouse Land in a very limited run of hardbacks. Please see www.summerhouseland.com for more details.
4,25 ⭐ Gdyby koleje mojego losu potoczyły się inaczej i trafiłbym na te książki 15 lat temu, to ta seria byłaby moim "Harrym Potterem". A tak to moim "Harrym Potterem" jest "Harry Potter". Szokujące, nie?
This was perfection. This is one of the best books ever written!
I know those are big words, but they are not an overreaction. This book is by far the best adventure book I've ever read. Even though it is 800+ pages long, it keeps you on the edge the whole time. That is how good it is!!
DEEPER continues the adventure from TUNNELS, where Will, a teenage boy, is drawn to a world built under our own, where people have lived for hundreds of years. And as the title suggests, with each book we go deeper and discover mysteries of ancient times.
DEEPER is visceral in a way today's young adult genre isn't. If you like happy endings or beautiful fantastic worlds this is NOT the book for you. The TUNNELS series in general is probably one of the most realistic and grim YA universes out there. And if you think of not reading it because it is YA, fear not. The numerous sins of the genre are nowhere to be found.
I see a lot of reviewers saying the characters are not likable and that is why they give it a lower rating and I simply don't get that way of thinking. Not every book character has to be a hero. People are not perfect. So why should book characters be? If I can say one thing about them, it is that they are superbly written. You get the motivation of their actions. You understand why they do what they do. And that should be enough.
Being Deep Underground for 645 pages isn't a healthy read.. Dark & hot as it is, even with the fascinating imagination of the atmosphere, underground river the creatures, even the lost civilisation theories of the Deeps. It's just too long, claustrophobic even.. not much happening here to be that long.. it can be a better novel in less than half of the pages.
*** The Story ***
Will and his brother Cal successful rescued his best friend, Chester from the Deeps. And they continue searching for his adoptive father who somewhere in the Deeps making researchers about the curious civilisation of the underground world. They met two rebels Darek and Elliot who tell them how the Styxs are mass killing the Deep’s residents for unknowing reasons. Beside , of course, hunting and killing the rebels.
Meanwhile, Will and Cal’s real mother, Sarah, who runaway from the Colony years ago is returning to avenge her brother’s death who the Styx tricked her into believing her son Will who killed him and abducted his younger brother along the way.
The Styx also planning to release a plague to get rid of all the Topsoiler population and regain control their promised Earth..
After many supposed deaths all the characters goes even Deeper..Deeper into the center of Earth.
Except one , Darek who return to the topsoil, watching the styx who watching the adoptive mother who still immersed in soap opera. That's really summing up All the characters movements and events in the whole 645 pages of this novel..
It's really fine plot, fun atmosphere of underground and evil religious cult that wants to control and invade the aboveground, curious scientist who discover strange writings on the walls of the very deep underground in Hieroglyphic old Greek letters.
Mother being torn believing her son went murderous (nice idea but I hated her reaction) and a Friend getting full of the troubles his friend put him through..
All that is fine..the idea, characters and the story ...But what's bad is, being 645 pages in Deep in the Dark Underground is not healthy at all..
I'd rate it 3...but actual rating is 2.5 cause it was too unnecessary long literally made me feel claustrophobic... Hopefully next book seems better -told you I already bought the first 4 books before even reading the first one.- Mohammed Arabey From 24 November 2018 To 29 November 2018
As I read this book I was glad that it moved a lot faster than the first one. There was one part for me that was kindof slower so I skimmed a few chapters. My one critique of these books would be the endings. When I read Harry Potter or Fablehaven, I loved it because I felt like the book had an ending, but still left you wondering what would happen in the next book. These books, Tunnels and Deeper, make me feel like they just ran out of ideas so they ended it there, in a random spot. I like a little bit of finality in the end, even if it is a sequel. I did like the amazing detail given to the underground world. I sometimes would have to stop and do something else because I could imagine the complete blackness and being 5 miles under ground.
Spoiler Alert:
I did get tired of people dying and then coming back around. It seemed to happen a little too much for me. I mean, if you get shot in the head with a rifle, I think you are pretty much a goner right :)
One last thing, I think the men who wrote the book (their picture is in the back) look like what I would picture Will and Chester looking like, only older.
I liked "Deeper" more than "Tunnels". This book was much more interesting, there was a lot happening, there were many intrigues, and I feel like the characters were given more depth. When it comes to the plot, again, I wouldn't give this book to a kid. "Deeper" touches many very difficult topics such as drastic death, betrayal, tough friendship, or killing someone in order to save them. The characters in "Deeper" were more developed than in "Tunnels", probably because they've just gone through a lot, but still, I really liked that. Overall, the book was really good and I can't wait to read the other parts.
BOŻE, POPŁAKAŁAM SIĘ. I CANNOT. DOSŁOWNIE KOŃCÓWKA BE LIKE: 'note to entomologists: to avoid any confusion dr burrows dust mite is an atachnid and not an insect bla bla bla'. JESUS. Anyways. Trochę mi to zajęło. I wciąż jestem. Like... Huh? What do you mean? + Sytuacja z Rebeccą? Excuse me? Btw. Jakby... Możemy go już zabić? A czytałam kurde onyx storm. To mówi wiele.)
Ugh! Maybe my opinion is deep seated in my claustrophobia since I am one of the few that didn't like it. I didn't care for the first book but i was told this one is better. Granted I was completely intrigued at the idea. The underground dystopia was a new spin I felt had great promise. The description is great. The story is well written as far as writing goes but...
The characters suck. I don't find any of them like-able. The only characters I liked were killed off in the last book. And what's the end game? There's no hope. We keep hearing how going topside again is impossible and the deeps is a place where most go to die. If we are told its impossible and a character has the conviction to fight that and make it topside no matter what there's an end game. But the whole book They are looking for will's dad who, as you hear over and over, could care less about his son. All he cares about is making a name for himself although he has no way to ever return topsoil either. The man is not even comparable to the absent minded professor. He's just plain lost it. It's just dark and dreary.
At the beginning when I saw we were going to see what his mother was up to I thought finally! Maybe an adult that isn't impassive or evil. But nope. After a chapter or two we realize that she's joining the hunt to execute Will. And because of what? One letter, not even from someone she trusted, and she decides to kill her son when she's the one who started the whole mess to begin with. And then because the styx convince her? ummm you mean those people that have been trying to kill you your entire life. Theres a good group to put your faith in. Huh? And then there's the story of her leaving. Ok your son is dying. You leave with your son or die trying. You don't wait til he's dead then start to take your other kids and realize o never mind it's too hard so ill just drop one off here and another there and disappear alone. We are told numerous times how her and her brother would go visit topsoil numerous times. So why all the sudden was this time so difficult? And what mother loves her kids enough to take them out of the colony and then just drop him off somewhere and walk away while he's screaming for you??? He's three for goodness sakes. How do you even know the person who finds him wouldn't abuse him? that the styx wouldn't just take him and kill him? why wouldn't you take him with you??? Wasn't the point of leaving the colony to protect them? so you get out and decide never mind it would be too hard? ugh. And I'm so lost on the end game of the colony. They plan on unleashing some crazy virus that will kill all the topsoilers? Ok but what character cares? Maybe Chester but he has no backbone, no determination. What does will have to go back to? What is his motivation? Everything seems pointless. There is no bright light. No good vs evil. Where's the Jedi? Dumbledore/Hagrid/Mcgonagol? The supportive family? A strong hero/heroine fighting against injustice? A love that can defy all odds? Something. I don't see any reason for will to bother fighting. His character doesn't seem to see the point either. It's just so depressing. So in the end maybe you have Sarah and drake are finally pushing against the Styx. But then it's over. There's no closure. I get there's another book but this just ends in the middle of an action sequence. They fall.... The end. Huh? How are they any closer to their goal? What even is their goal? I mean this book is what 500+ pages and basically nothing happened except a bunch of people die, some of which miraculously come back to life (whats up with that?). You find out how the Styx plan on conquering the world and that's it. I'm pretty sure that could've been summed up in a few chapters. Perhaps if this story was a single book instead of a trilogy I would've been more intrigued. The description is great but it doesn't cover the major things missing from this story in my opinion. I won't be continuing the last book any time soon unless I'm on a happy high and feel the need to get sucked into depression.
The sequel to its predecessor, Deeper, is like that attraction at Disneyworld that you want to ride over and over and over again. One of my pet peeves with books is bad cliffhangers. I hate it when you finish a book with a cliffhanger ending, and you really want to know what happens next. You finally get your hands on the sequel, but chapter one doesn't pick up from where you left off- it takes a couple chapters to get back to where you left off. Deeper is not one of those books. Deeper quite literally starts straight off from where we last saw our heroes Will, Chester and Cal. It jumps straight into the action without any of the "stalling" of any other chapters. HOWEVER. Chapter one is kind of like a prologue. You find out what one of the character's relatives is up to, then right off the bat at chapter two, we get back in the swing of things. My favourite thing about deeper was that it just never slowed down. There's also the reoccurring theme of plot twists that never get old. The action sequences are even better than the ones from the first book- plus there are a few more gory parts, too. Several more characters are introduced in this novel, and two of which turn out to be my absolute favourite characters for the rest of the series. The main protagonists go through a lot of tough tests, too, and there are a few moments where you really wonder what will become of them. Their personalities become more defined with each book. I must say that some of my favourite scenes involved Will in peril. I hate to admit it, but perilous parts in the book were fun to read about to see how the characters would get out of the situation! **SPOILER ALERT: DO NOT READ ON IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY READ OR ARE PLANNING TO READ THE BOOK!** Elliott is by far the coolest kick-ass girl I've ever read about in a young adult book series. When her and Will paired up for the night watch at the bunker, I knew that that would soon become one of the coolest parts of the book- and for me, it was. The incident with Will getting caught up in the Coprolite mess was pretty disgusting, but I love how the scene was written out! Another one of my favourite scenes was when Sarah visited Mrs. Burrows at Humphrey House masquerading as Kate O'Leary. The intensity of that moment was so good, and it really showed how Mrs. Burrows was coming out of her slump and using her brain for once. **SPOILERS OVER, continue reading from here:** Reading this book really restored my faith in young adult literature, and left me wanting more from this brilliant author.
Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more; Or close the wall up with our English dead.
Well... that was intense. This sequel to Tunnels starts immediately as the other book finished, hurtling in to the Deeps and boy are they some deep Deeps.
A lot of this book is spent with the protagonists in pitch darkness, stumbling around in the bowels of the Earth. It's hot and horrible, grim and grisly. The story is split in to five parts, with over fifty chapters between them, so it's not a quick read. The first couple of parts I felt were a little slow, despite being interesting, particularly on the chapters spent Topsoil. But in the latter parts of the book the pace and tension is brought right back up to the boil. Those poor boys, life is remorseless for them now and bleak and good God do I hate that little bitch [sic].
This series is running off a little in the direction of Jules Verne now, which I have always loved - so do not mind the surrealism. But primarily it feels like an ecclesiastical warning, the hatred of the dogmatic Styx brethren for pretty much everyone other than their own kind, the righteous purge of those less worthy, different - constant deception, malicious lies and treachery. The authors do a fantastic job of painting evil and its vile designs.
A little slow to start as said, but tense, stressful and exciting for the majority; looking forward to falling in to the next one.
This book really bothered me, because I so wanted to like this series, but the characters drove me crazy. There was no consistency in their personalities, and their emotions didn't feel authentic. One minute Will is in total shock over something traumatic that happened, and can barely even hear the people talking to him, and then two minutes later, he's bouncing around all excited, the traumatic thing forgotten. And I don't get Chester and his occasional hostility at all. As far as Cal, I thought I remembered him having a personality in the previous book, but either I imagined that, or it was removed at some point along the way, because he became nothing but a whiny shadow. Really, I had a hard time getting a handle on any of these characters, which made it hard to care too much about them. I kind of liked Elliot, but her story wasn't really fleshed out at all, either. Between this and the complete lack of fun, reading this was a frustrating experience. (This is supposed to be a kids' book, I guess, but I can't imagine a kid enjoying something so bleak!) And then there are the stupid decisions people kept making. So, yeah, you come across a person who you know is hunting you down on behalf of some really bad people, and sure, she's nice and all, but you not only leave her injured but alive, you tell her exactly where you're going?! DUMB! Anyway, of course the book ended on a cliffhanger, so there was essentially no resolution to anything. Because I don't like to leave things unresolved, and because I still hope that the story has potential, I won't rule out the possibility of checking out the next one. But I probably won't any time soon.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I rated the book a three because it's lengthy and mostly uninteresting with only a few parts worth reading. The ending was unsurprising and abrupt, the characters were unsociable and there were no personal connections to be made with the story. The book was confusing and makes little sense if you haven't read the first, and seems like a continuation for other books in the trilogy. Unless you enjoy the first book or the author, I don't recommend the book to casual readers.
The three main characters, Will, Chester, and Cal, travel to a hostile and dangerous subterranean world under the tyrannical control of the Styx. Will's father, Dr. Burrows, had gone missing during an expedition, and Will hopes to rescue him. Throughout the story, the trio is revealed to be selfish, unaware, and often dim witted. The main part of the story was never made apparent, (the Styx had planned to take over the world) and most of the book is centered on the trio's never-ending run from the Styx. The events and interactions with other characters throughout the book were mostly insignificant and confusing, and moments of interest weren’t all that satisfying.
Without aid from the first book, the subterranean civilization is extremely hard to understand, and wasn’t explained to an extent where it could be understood. The main sections of the “world” consist of Eternal city, the main home of the colonists; the deeps, the pore, the great plain, the seam, and the wastes are all outlying areas around the city. Most locations don’t even contribute any importance to the story.
What a waste of time! I read the first book a long time ago and liked it a lot. Now I finally read the second one and I still cannot believe how bad it was. Did my taste change so much or was the quality drop really this huge? The whole thing felt just like one super long filler - boring and uninteresting.
On the top of that, all of the female characters were either dumb or evil. Sometimes they were a**holes, too. And Will kept whining how he'll never get ~the opposite sex~ because women are so unreasonable and impossible to talk to. Wow, nothing better than a giant dose of teenage misogyny.
I'm so upset and disappointed. The first book had some flaws but at least it was a fun read. This? No, no, no.
Worst part is that I'm actually considering giving the series one more try. Probably because I had such high hopes for it and I'm lying to myself that maybe this is just the worst book? Siiiiigh, I never change.
While trying to find his dad underground, Will finds out about a family he didnt know existed.. The underground people in charge are known as STYX and they are after Will but he doesnt know why.. book 2 is full of adventure and intrigue that kept me very interested throughout. This book was published in 2008 but it talks about these underground people releasing a airbourne and water bourne virus above ground, to eliminate the population so they can come back to the surface and be the supreme beings... This virus is released in London and quickly travels to the United States and beyond becoming a pandemic which the scientists are trying to make a vaccine for... Many people are dead or severley sick from it.... Very close to our current situation in our world today... Who would have thought 12 years after this story was published we would be living it for real.. looking forward to book 3 and a possible solution to the pandemic...
5/5⭐ Will wraz z bratem Calem i przyjacielem Chesterem wylądowali w pociągu zmierzającym do Głębi - przerażającego i tajemniczego miejsca, którego obawiają się nawet Koloniści. Jakie tajemnice skrywa Rebeka? I ile jeszcze ludzi musi cierpieć i umierać, aby Will, Chester i Cal wyszli z tego cało?
I. Am. Shook. No i czytając to po 2020… hmmm…. Serio dobrze że mam kolejną część!!!
The creativity, the suspense, the shocking twist at the end, the imaginative yet somehow kind of believable world the authors invented - all of this comes together to make this (in my opinion) one of the greatest YA books in the game.
Age range: 14+ They use some advanced vocabulary (I had to look up “menhir”) and there is lots of violence and death and scary bad guys.
I really likes this one. My only objections are the pacing. Sometimes it took days and many miles and next they where covering the same distance in what felt like hours. Also people keep getting ressurected.
