Lovely reminiscence of a young woman's coming of age in a bygone time and place.

Excellent short story (memoir) at beginning of book (though I shuddered at a bit of racism), but I couldn't continue. I don't care whether this was "normal" during the time. I think racism just doesn't belong, so I didn't finish the book.
