This book is turned out to be such a sweet and romantic story. It takes place in a quaint English village where everyone knows each other. Marla Jacobs owns the quaint Beckleberry Little White Wedding Chapel. Jonny is her flamboyantly gay wedding coordinator, celebrant, and dear friend. Emily is her dear friend who also works for her. There is also the wonderful old couple who has been together for over 60 years, Ivan and Dora, who were in essence grandparents to them all. Then right across the street from the wedding chapel, instead of a cupcake store opening, a funeral home sets up shop. You can only imagine Marla in no way wants a funeral home in front of her wedding chapel. What bride will want to start her day with a hearse parked on the other side of the street? Marla is bound and determined to not let this happen and figures she can convince the owner to not open and move. Marla meets Gabriel Ryan. He is the very sexy owner of the funeral home. They have an instant connection but it is one that involves attraction and hatred. Getting him to move locations will not be easy. But Gabe has no intentions of leaving his location and so Marla and Gabe’s story begins……
This story is just not about Marla and Gabriel. It also tells the story of all the secondary characters as they are all interwoven in each other’s lives. I was a little confused at the beginning as there are a lot of characters. But as you continue reading you get to know each one and become invested in their happiness, sadness, desires and turmoil’s. Nothing is ever sweet and simple in life. Everyone faces adversities- some are small, some are big, some can be heartbreaking, some can change you forever, some can hold you back, but most of all, it’s what happens in life and how we choose to deal with them that shapes our lives. There is Emily and Tom, Jonny and his quest for love, all the weddings, Marla’s mom and her 8th fiancé, Melanie, the funeral receptionist, Dan, Gabe’s best friend and helper, Ivan and Dora, Marla and her boyfriend Rupert, and of course the story of Marla and Gabe and their love/hate relationship. I thoroughly enjoy Kat French’s storytelling.
For those of you who hate cheating in a book, I will say that there is cheating in this book- but I will say that the way it was handled in a very genuine way. I take my hat off to you Kat French for how you wrote it and resolved it. I loved that Dora, with all her years, was able to help. It was all very touching to me. I know that sounds strange about cheating but you will understand after you read.
If you like romantic tales with a side of comedy, angst, heartbreak and love, then I think you will love this book. All the characters were perfect and I felt that I could have been friends with any of them, well maybe not all of them but you need to read to figure out which one I wouldn’t want to be friends with. I loved that the last chapter took us 5 yrs out on everyone’s life. This book left me with a sweet, sweet smile. It was just a great feel- good book with a beautiful HEA.

0 stars really Waste of 99 cents it was Stock characters all over the place Typical redhead who’s attracted to the hot guy Typical guy with an accent who’s in love with her Typical best friends Typical gay friend Not one interesting word in the whole book, I couldn’t care less if they all died, it would have been more interesting if they did Even the sex scene was a yawn

After reading some of the less than positive reviews of this book on Goodreads, I started Undertaking Love with a little trepidation.
I must have been reading a different book though as I absolutely loved it. Undertaking love had the perfect mix of old and young, gay and straight, good and evil, drama and laughs. I giggled, cried, shouted and sighed.
The secondary characters in this book are a particular win for me, Ivan and Dora were hilarious at points, heartbreaking at others, Dan was the perfect rogue, who turned out to be an absolute darling in the end. Jonny was definitely the funniest "gay in the village" and Melanie and Rupert added just the right amount of badness to the story. Emma and Toms side story worked really well against Marla and Gabriel's and I really didn't want the book to end.
I hope Kat French decides to write some more tales about this little Shropshire village and the community that lives there, as I found it absolutely charming, with just the right amount of spice thrown in.
I was provided with a copy of this book by Netgalley, it was my pleasure to provide the above honest review in thanks for the privilege.
What a fabulous read this book is, love the way that Kat French can make you see in your mind exactly what she is writing. I've read other reviews saying what a wonderful film this book would make and that is exactly what I thought! Kat manages romance, a little bit of steamy action lots of laughter with some fabulous one liners, tears and one of the most beautifully touching scenes I have read with Dan at the hospital, I'll say no more because I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I have to say its only 4 stars because I wanted a bit more of Emily, Tom and Dan. Great book Kat.
I desperately wanted to love this book, but sadly I just barely liked it. I thought the plot sounded funny, light and cute. In ways it was, but there was so much cheating in this book it depressed me. I don't have a problem with cheating in the books I read if its done right, which here it wasn't. With the exception of two of the actual characters this book focused around EVERYONE was cheating on someone, it really put me off. I wasn't particularly fond of the main heroine (well either of them really) she was mean and immature at times and for a business woman she was wasn't very understanding. She expected to get her way and when she didn't she acted out like a child throwing a tantrum. There were times when she would start to be a better character and I would get excited thinking there was going to be a turn around just to be disappointed when she did or said something that made no sense. The book really wasn't that bad, I did read the whole book and I really liked the hero and some of the side characters. If I would have known about the cheating and the fact that there is little to no real interaction between the main h/H until the literal end of the book I might have enjoyed the book more. If the plot sounds engaging to you and you want to read it you definitely should because the cheating and main character might no rub you the way it did me. Happy Reading
This book was a shaky one to review. I would end up liking aspects of it and then I would have to force myself to sit and read through others.
I loved the whole plot idea and I think the bones of this book is amazing, but it dragged on and there were just way too many side stories happening. I had to force myself to read the last 20 pages because I felt it was unnecessary and predictable in a way that wasn’t endearing.
The romances (and there were many considering all the POVs) were seriously unrealistic and completely stretched. Where it wasn’t being far-fetched, it was underdeveloped and laking formation. I wanted more personality. More details. And if I’m honest, not so many happy endings! *Ahem, Emily* That character’s outcome and relationships would be completely different if we were being real.
I really wanted to love it, but I ended up only sort of liking it.
I think I just talked myself into more of a 2.75 rating as I wrote this review...

This book has it all. I was in a total book funk when I stared this and I couldn't have picked a better book to get me out of it and cheer me up. This is like your favourite rom com in a book. But at the same time it's so much more. Kat manages romance, a little bit of steam, lots of laughter with some fabulous one liners and tears (I cried, like proper needed tissues and couldn't just use my sleeve tears)
There are a lot of very touching moments in this book and they're not always much to do with the romance between Marla and Gabe which helps give a great feel for the side characters. There's also lots of LOL moments too my favourite being when Marla was on the floor hiding on her Birthday and Gabe was knocking on the door then he posted a note through the letter box, what he had written on it was brilliant.
All the characters have a story and big parts to play even Bluey the dog. In each chapter there are parts told from the main group. Which sounds like it could be a muddle but its not and it totally works.....It lets us get a feel for everyone and your kept flicking the pages to find out what's going on then it flips to another character and its like mini cliffhangers in ever chapter. This is genius writing as it keeps the reader gripped.
Marla is a tough cookie to crack and has no intentions of getting involved with Gabe cause he's not a safe option for her. But she can't seem to stop how she reacts to him. And how could she.....Gabe is a hot, tall, dark, handsome, tattooed, motorbike riding, Irish undertaker. Need I say more?! No not really.
"Gables accent was enough to make a nun's knicker elastic twang."
And he does the sweetest things for her despite the fact she keeps pushing him away. (Which annoyed me!!) And he knew he wanted her he just had to convince her about it.
"Because the simple, inescapable truth was that from the moment Marla Jacobs had opened the chapel doors and deliberately insulted him, Gabe had known with utter certainty that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. It was just a shame that she couldn't stand the sight of him then."
This book is WELL worth your money and your time reading I read it really quick. But it wasn't a short read it was a long read so there was no rush in the writing everything flowed really well and wasn't all rushed towards the end like some books are.
The ending is great and it could be left just like that but it could also take off from there with anyone of them as the "main" story but with everyone else still in the background. I would love to read more oops with this cast.
I was lucky enough to receive an early copy of Undertaking Love from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. If you've read Knight & Play by Kitty French then you'll be familiar with her work. This is her debut novel under the pen name Kat French and wow, what a debut it is. If you're looking for another Lucien Knight you won't find him but you WILL find Gabriel who's totally different but equally sexy and swoonworthy!!
I read Undertaking Love over two nights, would have read it in one day but work got in the way! Loved it and can't recommend it enough. The story centres around the two main characters Gabe and Marla but it also delves into lives and loves of their friends and neighbours. Think of the film Love Actually and you've got Undertaking Love in a nutshell...a funny and beautiful story of love shining through no matter what. I fell in love with the sensitive but passionate Gabriel immediately, who wouldn't with his dark curls and sexy Irish accent? I cried, I mean really cried, with Marla in one scene but can't say why without giving away some of the plot. My heart melted and broke for Dora and Ivan and I loved Jonny, Marla's witty and flamboyantly gay wedding celebrant with his "Oprah-inspired neck wiggle." I laughed quite a lot at some of the hilarious scenes, the dinner party being one of my favourites and I also sobbed until I couldn't see to read and my throat hurt... seriously, at the OMIGOD jaw droppers. Without going into too much detail (don't want to spoil it) the letter broke me! You'll know why when you read it. Undertaking Love is a MUST read for all you hopeless romantics out there.
Wedding Chapel goes head to head with Funeral Parlour - can almost see the headline in the paper! And of course, the arch-enemies, Marla Jacobs and Gabe Ryan have a sizzling attraction. Sprinkle in a great crew of supporting characters and you have a fab romcom.
What I liked: Attention to detail was spot on. It was the little things the characters did that added depth, and a great trait of Kat French's writing skills. It was all super easy to visualise. I adored Dora and Ivan, such a sweet couple, and there were some real stand out LOL moments, especially the dinner with Marla's mum. Totally cringeworthy! The chemistry between Marla and Gabe was fab too - some steamy scenes that are probably a bit naughtier than in your standard romcom book.
What didn't rock my world: Although Marla and Gabe were great, I didn't really get interested in their relationship until a way into the book - partly because the relationships between the other characters hooked me more and partly because they'd done a great job of avoiding each other up until then. Although it started with them, it kind of morphed more into the story of Tom and Emily (cute couple, too) - they were like the quiet rock of the story for me. Would liked to have known the outcome with crazy Melanie, too.
Overall, this was a great, great read and it really wouldn't surprise me if this got optioned for a film. I can totally see it on the big screen, and with so many great supporting characters, I'd love to read more about the characters from Beckleberry. Definitely recommended!
"Funny, romantic, and dangerously sexy, UNDERTAKING LOVE is a delightful debut from an exciting new voice in Women’s fiction. " QUOTE frome Netgalley
Undertaking Love is in many ways your typical chick-lit. To be honest I expected it to be a rom-com... And it does have its funny moments. But I wouldn't actually describe it as a rom-com. The setting and many other factors did remind me of some of the great English rom-com movies. Rupert being actually described as a but of a Hugh Grant look-alike definitely drove that point home even more. The plot is well as romantic novels goes, rather in the normal cliche set-up. To be honest the initial set-up the wedding chapel against the undertaker somehow made me have much higher expectations. Because that set up is a very clever idea.
The book is written in several point of views. And actually I think in to many POVs, because it does give too much away. I think the fact that one knows earlier on what Rupert thinks takes all the surprise away, same with Melanie There are very touching moments in this book- and they actually not much to do with the romance between Marla and Gabe. I found their romance somewhat disappointing. I honestly don't really fancy insta-lust in the first place.. but insta-love? It kinda did kill the vibe for me. It was too quick too soon, and I wish there would have been more banter. I found it kinda hard to reconcile Gabe's reaction to meeting Marla. Let's face it, he is supposed to be a wee bit of a bad ass hottie with a cute Irish accent! i would have preferred more bad-ass and less smitten kitten. What French did really well in my opinion are the different relation ship between the friends. I honestly really like the circle of friends and their dynamic. And those above mentioned touching moments were all to do with those friends. My favorite scene was the family dinner! It kinda highlighted the entire dynamic, with a wicked sense of black humor.
The character building was kinda interesting. Because while I did like Gabe and Marla- I found Emily, Johnny, Ivan and Co. - basically all the friends- were given much more interesting personalities! French showed real finesse writing them and I felt like I knew them at the end of the book. They were the unexpected and unusual in this book. And as a result I was way more interested what will happen for example with Emily's situation than with Marla and Gabe. Their storyline was set so clearly right in the beginning. Gabe and Marla as characters were in my opinion quite a cliche. And while I didn't mind it as much, I found myself kinda disappointed by them. Because in compare to the support characters they fell a bit flat. Their 'dangerously sexy' romance- uhm was sweet but not near dangerous. The villains were totally disappointing in that they were very cliche and too extreme- so they felt cartoon-ish.
The end was a bit to tied up and neat for me. EVERY single thing was settled and got a HEA.
Despite those things, I found myself reading this in one setting. And really enjoyed French's prose.
To be honest, I have to admit that I am rather critical and I think lovers of this genre might enjoy this book more than I did. An interesting debut, I am definitely looking out for the next book French is writing.
ARC was provided by Publishers through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
This book is amazing I have had so many LOL moments hubby thought I was going mental.
Marla who is American owns a chapel for all types of weddings, Gabriel who is Irish buys the shop next door to open a funeral parlour. Marla has a mixture of characters working for her, Dora and Ivan a hilarious old married couple, Jonny who is a muscular gay man and so funny at times and Emily who is desperate to get pregnant.
Jonny decided to launch a campaign against the funeral parlour or as he calls them “The Munsters” to try and close it down but things get out of hand. Marla finds Gabe very attractive “Gabe’s accent was enough make a nun’s knicker elastic twang”. Wedding and Funerals clash in the street because Gabe’s receptionist has a crush on him so decides to retain certain information about wedding dates. Emily ends up pregnant but the baby is possibly Dan’s, Dan is Gabe’s best friend with whom she had a one night stand in the back of the hurst.
Marla mum Cecilia visits from America who is a sex therapist and is not shy discussing sex anywhere, even informing a group of Marla’s friends including Gabe that she is “terribly small – down there”. Gabe surprises Marla on her birthday with a picnic basket full of American delicacies, they both end up sharing a lot more than the picnic. Marla decides at midnight that Gabe needs to go her birthday treat is over.
Gabe is always there to rescue her from unfortunate events that tend to happen he becomes her angel. Eventually he finds out what a conniving receptionist he has and fires her, unfortunately whilst conducting Dora’s funeral his ex receptionist sets fire to the funeral parlour. He decides not to reopen the funeral parlour and heads back to Ireland leaving Marla realizing that she love him.
He returns Christmas Eve to the chapel to see Marla only to find Emily in labour, Cecilia drunk on sherry Angel Gabriel to the rescue again. He eventually manages to talk with Marla and they both in love with each other, Jonny finds himself a nice gay nurse at the hospital but cant find a room because Cecilia is in the cleaning cupboard with her ex husband a doctor, Marla and Gabe are in one of the side rooms making out, a young nurse on her knees in front of the hospitals Santa in another room he gives up and shouts “Could all of the straight people get out of the f*****g closets, please? Gay men coming through!”
It has all of the right ingredients and they're mixed together in a special way which makes it stand out from the crowd.
I was expecting light and fluffy, and instead I got a passionate and well paced story which made me laugh and chuckle and almost seethe with anger. This story follows a group of people, all with their own problems and passions, and this makes the story all the more beautiful.
A nuclear lust bomb exploded behind her rib cage, sending slivers of awareness hurtling through her body in all directions.
The conversation between friends, and between couples, flows very naturally with an understandable humour.
This story is heart-breaking and heart-warming all at once, and it reminds you of what love really is, how love really feels and what love really means. There is real passion and conflict, this is not love at first sight.
If he needed a sign, he should have said. She would have hurled a bucket of cold water over him.
I was gushing at everything between Dora and Ivan, and I shed more than one tear too.
She is more than just my guiding light. She is the rock that this lighthouse stands on.
This book makes me more glad than ever that I have found the rock that my lighthouse stands on.
Have a glass of wine with this book. Or a bottle. It depends how much it makes you want to drown your sorrows.
I received a copy of this for free via NetGalley for review purposes.
I really enjoyed The Piano Man Project a few months ago so wanted to check out more of her books. This one was about a funeral parlour moving next door to a wedding chapel, and the 'war' that ensues. I enjoyed this a lot, more so than the piano one. I liked the story better, the characters more, the development, even the story on the side. I think French likes her books to wrap up super neatly with everyone in a happily ever after, and now that I know and expect that, I don't mind. It was a sweet, romantic, funny, interesting, mostly realistic story. I mean, it's a romance, so if you dig those, you might like this. I quite enjoyed it. There was a couple Doctor Who references which was obviously awesome.
Kat French wrote one of my favorite contemporary books, the one that made me squeal, faint and sigh - The Piano Man Project.
Unfortunately, Undertaking Love is an earlier book of hers and just isn't as deliciously romantic, funny or powerful. It feels like it goes on for too long; while the story has some moments, there are too many characters vying for space on the page. While I liked Cecilia and Jonny, and I loved serious, sexy undertaker Gabe, who was very well-drawn, the other characters had blurrier lines, including the main character Marla.
In particular, I didn't understand why/how Gabe thought, upon first seeing Marla, In short, I wasn't feeling it.
Around page 340 it started to finally get going, but that wasn't enough to elevate the book from 2 to 3 stars for me. Because I adored The Piano Man Project I will give this author's books another shot, but this was definitely disappointing. I just kept waiting for it to go somewhere, to spark and sizzle, and it never quite got off the ground.
This was a really enjoyable contemporary romance from Kat French, with a great plot device of the conflict that occurs in the little village of Becklebury when a funeral parlour opens right opposite a wedding chapel. I always enjoy frenemies to lovers stories, and Marla and Gabriel's tale was no exception. Kat always writes characters you come to care about and manages to infuse her stories with a nice balance of romance, humour, and some emotion that had me wiping tears from my eyes. The only negative for me was with is a personal peeve of mine, but other than that this was, as ever, an entertaining read and comes recommended for those that like some light-hearted easy reading.
I laughed, I cried, I wanted to physically jump inside the book and smack the crazy out of some of the characters. I actually adored the narration, the setting, and I have to say my favourite thing of all was Johnny.
If you want to feel all of the above, I strongly suggest that you purchased this book because you will not be disappointed.
4.5* This was superior chick-lit. It made me cry. It made me laugh out loud (watch out for the hospital visit!). Its characters were, on the whole, well developed. I want a friend like Johnny! It also had a great final sentence. The repetitive introspection by our heroine on the topic of marriage was a little trying and is the only thing that robbed this book of half a star.
So what's it about? Some bloke opens an undertakers across the road from your wedding chapel. You're so going to hate him, right? Oh hang on, he's Aidan Turner in a suit. *Swoon*
Is it any good? Well, after adoring Knight & Play (an erotic novel written by Kat's saucy alter-ego, Kitty), I had high hopes for Undertaking Love. And it delivers. There's a whole lot of romantic and downright steamy fun to be had. You can see where Kitty gets it from.
The cast, from the sexy Gabe to adorable elderly couple, Dora and Ivan, are great. And if you put a US-style wedding chapel across the road from a traditional undertakers in rural Shropshire, how can you not have a fabulous location?
I've been smitten with Gabe since the blurb - he's right up my street. I took a little longer to warm to Marla, but ended up liking her a lot.
The couple I really fell in love with were Emily and Tom. Oh, and at the end... the bit with them and... well, by then I couldn't give two hoots if Marla copped off with Gabe (that was a given) what happened with Tom and Emily actually had tears in my eyes. I never cry over books. Well, rarely.
But that's what's lovely about Undertaking Love - with such a varied cast of characters and relationships, there's something to tug your heart strings.
If you like a classic beauty copping off with the brooding but sensitive hero, then this should be right up your street, but be prepared, this isn't a Mills & Boon book. At least the last one I read didn't have lines in it like this:
"The old dear in the village shop had glared at him with unconcealed disapproval when he'd been in for the second box of man-size tissues last week.
Something had to give, and unfortunately, it was probably going to be his wrist."
I don't know what it is about men called Gabriel, but there is something about characters with that name that reduces me to a swooning, sighing, quivering female. Gabriel Ryan is no different. For a start he's Irish , secondly he's all man and a true gent, but he's not sappy with it and finally he has a way with words, both in the polite caring everyday way and in the 'bedroom' way .
Anyway enough about the sexy main man. Kat French has written a lovely book encompassing family, friendship and love (with some nice steamy romantic romps I must add). Whilst we are treated to several characters journeys, the book centralises around Marla's wedding chapel, Gabe's newly opened funeral parlour next door and the turf-war Marla declares. Village life isn't dull, nor are the residents and humour, romance and arguments are balanced with life's more serious issues which are heartwarming and heart-wrenching; it made me want to celebrate with them and help them through their difficult times.
I flitted between laughing out loud, sitting here with a little tear in my eye and everything in between. The only thing that was missing for me was an epilogue as it would have been nice to see how things panned out for everyone a little further down the line, but that aside it was a thoroughly enjoyable read that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
It's been described as a laugh out loud romantic story set in a quirky English town! I can't wait to read this..... Kitty French writes as Kat French!
For a short time it's available for pennies! Amazon.co.uk
When Marla Jacobs discovers that the shop next to her Little White Wedding Chapel is to become a funeral parlour, she declares all-out war.
.....the arrival of Funeral Director Gabriel Ryan threatens everything Marla has worked for.
.....as soon as Marla meets her nemesis, she realises just how much trouble she’s really in. His rugged good looks and Irish lilt make her stomach fizz – how is she supposed to concentrate on destroying him, when half the time she’s struggling not to rip the shirt off his back?
Sounds HOT!! And lots of fun!

I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher Avon via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. The expected publication date is February 17th 2015.
Sometimes you do not need to say a lot to express that you enjoyed a book. This is one of those cases. It is typical of it's genre, a romance with a little bit of extra storyline to keep you engaged from beginning to end. It has the required conflict mixed with attraction for the two main characters.
What I enjoyed were the various sub-plots that were found in the story. The story of Emily and her failed attempts at pregnancy, the a-dora-ble Dora and the crazy Melanie. Many times I found myself anxiously waiting to get back to their stories. Not to mention that Gabe is the super sexy guy that one would expect in one of these stories.
These stories tend not to pull on my emotional heartstrings to much nor do I expect them to BUT there were a couple of tears shed from my eyes. Bluey...I will say no more.
Overall this would be a good choice for fans of the romance/contemporary genre. I happened to be reading this during my beach vacation and it was a great pick.
This book is funny and sweet. It's also probably the first time I've read of the hero being a funeral home director. I enjoyed reading about the little village the story was set in. Shropshire, England is quaint and the battle between the funeral home and the chapel is something the residents won't forget about soon, and neither will you.
I really enjoyed the chemistry between Marla and Gabriel. I didn't really enjoy the crossed wires and other people who got in the way of them being a couple, but it's usually that way when you can see they're perfect for each other but they can't. There are some great secondary characters who add more humor and fuller look at rustic life. I mean there's all sorts and they make the story richer and more realistic.
Kat French's debut is a must read for romantic comedy and chick lit lovers. It's worth trying it out. You may just be unable to put it down like me, stop yourself from laughing out loud, or hanging you head in frustration from some of the antics you'll read about.
