Marx’s Theory of Money: Modern Appraisals

Rate this book
This book provides a contemporary assessment of Marx's theory of money. This theory is often praised as one of Marx's greatest achievements, especially when compared with either classical or neoclassical economics. On the other hand, Marx's theory of money has also been severely criticized, especially that it seems to require that money be a produced commodity. The contributors to the volume provide a wide-ranging and in-depth appraisal of the strengths and weaknesses of Marx's theory of money, compared to other theories of money.

A rather interesting collection of essays and articles interpreting Marx's theory of money.

At first, I thought to myself "What can one really say about money? Does it deserve a book on its own? Much less, one economist's views on it?!"

But I was pleasantly surprised! The big problem, of course, is how to reconcile Marx's theory of money as commodity with fiat money.

(Marx discusses fiat money somewhat in his Grundrisse, but not in Das Kapital)

The book, naturally, goes into the details --- but it was a pleasant surprise to read.
