This is Jen's shining moment, her wedding day, and all she can think about are her blueberry stained teeth, her crazy soon-to-be-divorced parents, and her missing shoe. What's really on her mind, though, is the book that the pastor gave Will Your Marriage Last? And now she's just not so sure.
She survives the wedding, but can't even get through the honeymoon. Totally losing it, she asks her husband (of only one day) for a divorce. Going to divorce court is ugly-but with these fresh wounds and new insight on what marriage is and actually was, she's growing closer to her love than ever before. Will it take losing her husband-and mind-to show her what she always had?
Karen Kendall is the author of many disasters and nine romantic comedies. She grew up in Austin, Texas, and credits her early interest in writing to several teachers and her mother, a professor of comparative literature.
A graduate of Smith College, Karen studied the mysteries of modern and contemporary art before enrolling in a masters program in Museum Education, with the aim of teaching children about art. She worked for several museums and galleries before following her lifelong dream and completing a novel.
Karen is still a big fan of children's art, but she now writes full time and lives in Florida with her husband, Don, and attack-cat Boo, who turns up her nose at chicken and fish but adores asparagus and mint-chocolate-chip ice cream.
Another big miss. I believe it was supposed to be a romantic comedy. Except... There was nothing remotely funny in the story. I cannot remember one instance I smiled when reading this book; I only grated my teeth at the most outrageous anecdotes. Nor was there anything romantic either... To make it short, the heroine Jen is self-conscious, self-centered and just selfish. I could add crual, poor, on the verge to fat. Her mother is having a major breakdown; her father is not the perfect guy she thought he was and wears a toupee. Her brother is a teen rebel. Her fiance, Tom, was supposed to be the perfect man until he turned out drunk at his wedding, while his unexpected ex-wife adds some spice to an already bad day. The hero is slightly wimpy, with not too much character or brain. Anyway had he had any more he would have run away faster than lightspeed the first time he saw Jen... I could not care less if they ended up together or not in the end and only thought it would be great, were they both neutered (and their dog as well) to avoid them bringing another neurotic to the world. The almost ending sentence said that Jen was a never-ending punishment to atone for all previous sins and lies of Tom. It was meant as a joke but felt so true! I acknowledge that's rather a mean comment for a book that is not badly written, nor awfully structured. But I nevertheless really did not like it. And I still have another from this writer on my shelf...
The perfectly romantic marriage of Jennifer Canby and Tom Brookhaven started out okay. They got engaged at a restaurant - the ring was concealed in the champagne glass -- and then they drove home to tell Jen's parents, who chose that moment to announce they're getting divorced.
The wedding would have gone smoothly, except that the groom was slightly drunk and at the reception a secret-ex-wife (who Tom never mentioned to Jen) showed up and confronted her in the restroom. Jen waits until they're on their honeymoon in the Caribbean to break the news to Tom -- she thinks they should get divorced now, before things get any worse. As Jen begins informing the relatives, finding a place to live and returning the wedding gifts, Tom patiently waits for his new bride to act less like a crazy person and more like the woman with whom he just tied the knot.
Karen Kendall captures the insecurities and doubts of a zany newlywed who doesn't want to end up like her parents. This funny, sexy romance will keep you reading just to find out what Jen will do next. I laughed out loud at the witty quotes on marriage, weddings and newlyweds. Don't let the title fool you -- this bride may be FIT TO BE TIED in a straightjacket. Every step of her journey is filled with hilarious antics that you will love to read!
I was disappointed with this book. I did like how well this was written. It flowed well, was understandable. However, reading this book gave me a headache. I didn't care much for the plot and the characters definitely had me wanting to beat my own head. I was ready to stop reading about a third of the way through the book and had the make myself finish, for some reason I had a little flame of hope that things would be different. Needless (and sorry) to say that the flame died before I got to the end. I really couldn't stand the characters, the run-around, and their attitudes. I definitely wanted the to do something with them, but they wouldn't even care or realize I think. I just couldn't get into this story. I think it is a great example of what not to do in life and there was too much self-pity, anguish and bad decisions. There didn't really seem to be any strength in their personalities. Really sorry and Good Luck.
This was a bit too serious for my taste. The heroine was way too complicated and angst-filled. It's obvious a lot of it is due to family issues but being cowardly is not attractive. So feeling empathy for her was difficult. In the end she did learn from her mistakes and that, of course, is what we all hope we can do in the end in our own lives. Sometimes we learn too late but not so in this case. It was close, though.
Easy to get into and a really fun read! As you can see I finished it pretty quick, I did not want to put it down. I couldn't wait to find out what happened! The quotes at the beginning of each chapter are set up to go along with the chapter and I think that made it fun as well! Loved this book!! 5 stars!!!!!
