Somehow both more touching and more funny than the previous two volumes. The Miyazawa parents are so super cute. I love their relationship. There's a marked improvement in art as well that just so happens to make me long for summer.

Yukino and Soichiro have become so involved in their relationship that their schoolwork has started to slide. Their sudden drop in grades draws the attention of a teacher, who wants them to break up so they can concentrate on their grades--and therefore their futures--again. At the end, a new character, Maho, is introduced, and she seems to hold a grudge against Yukino.

Soichiro drops to number 3 in the class, while Yukino drops all the way to number 13. She accuses him of studying behind her back, to remain at the top of the pack and then starts devoting all her extra time to studying. I can't imagine ever being such a model student, where grades mean everything to me. I like Hideaki, but so far he hasn't been featured much in this series, and the developing relationship between Soichiro and Yukino can be kind of boring, although there are a couple of "aww" moments in this book that make the journey seem worthwhile.

Fazit:

Kare Kano is a gut-wrenching and wild ride. If you have only seen the anime, then you are missing a lot of the meat of this story. Kare Kano follows the story of Yukino who strives to be an image of perfection. She’s beautiful, is at the top of her class, and seems naturally good at everything she tries. However, this perfection is a complete facade. Yukino’s home life reveals her to be a messy, rude, narcissist, who is obsessed with being the best. Yukino’s obsessive pursuits seem to be fueled by the praise and admiration she receives from those around her, it becomes clear that she has a crippling fear of failure. Meanwhile, her class rival, Soichiro aims for perfection for entirely different reasons. Soichiro’s perfect life aims to conceal his dark past as he tries to make up for the abuse and trauma he faced as a child. He clearly has an overwhelming fear of loss and rejection.

Throughout the story, these two characters’ lives intertwine as they learn one another’s secrets and help one another work through their problems. Each of them grows as individuals separate from one another, but they also grow as friends and eventually a couple. If you have watched the anime, then your perception of this story is probably that it is a romantic comedy. While you are not necessarily wrong, this manga reaches levels of depth and darkness that the anime definitely does not prepare you for. This story tackles topics like self-harm, suicide, domestic abuse, sexual assault, and unwanted pregnancy, and a whole slew of mental health-related issues. While the manga covers much of these topics with noticeable care and sensitivity, I will say that given that the manga ran from the mid-’90s to the early ’00s, its understanding of some of these issues can feel quite dated at times.
There are elements to this story that I think are actively harmful. Specifically, the great length’s to which Yukino attempts to heal Soichiro’s dark past. This establishes a narrative in which a woman’s strength is defined by her ability to stand by her man no matter what. Unfortunately, that kind of storytelling has real-world consequences no matter how realistic the depiction is in this case. While it is not at the forefront of the story-telling, this manga also perpetuates the idea that girls should pursue older men; that they have more to offer and are simply more suitable partners than more age-appropriate options. This is a sentiment that I absolutely do not agree with, and I believe it to be a harmful trope.

That being said, while this story is quite dark at times it has an undeniable honesty and relevancy to the narrative. In many ways, it feels realistic, even if it is uncomfortable, which is probably why so many manga readers still flock to this series years after its publication. If you liked Fruits Basket or Mars, then I think you would enjoy Kare Kano. I think Fruits Basket does a better job unpacking different kinds of trauma, especially in regards to toxic masculinity. However, for better or worse, Kare Kano never relies on metaphor or fantasy to soften the blow of hard-hitting topics and in that way feels all too real in its delivery.

3.5/5 brought down for some lackluster story beats and what feels like the beginning of retreaded waters for certain themes and ideas in the story's introspective moments.
The first half covers a parent-teacher storybeat that I don't care for. It fleshed out the parents which is neat. We also get to see Miyazawa to reflect on the impact of her relationship with Arima which I enjoy but that happens constantly anyways so that's not special to the arc. It was neat to see their relationship get tested by outside forces for the first time and I hope that continues but the execution this time was a bit of a dud for me. But the teacher's actions felt unrealistic. I'm a teacher and few teachers think like this nowadays and would ramp up the situation like the teacher did. Idk for me it just didnt hit. Only real exploration is for the parents and they get little time making the whole arc feel like half of a volume of the kids saying "Our grades drop bit we'll do better. We don't need to split up!" until the teacher gives in. After that we get a fun chapter where they get a day off from school and spend time together. It's cute and I enjoyed just seeing them hang as a couple. It ends with setup for an upcoming arc where the girls turn on Miyazawa after realizing she has put down her barriers and misinterpret it as her being a cold and calculating girl trying to trick boys to love her. Its a sudden change as this sentiment is build up in the span of half of a chapter. It looks like it might have Miyazawa deal with misrepresenting herself for her own pleasure. It seems like it might be ok.
At this point the story feels like every story beat is just a new event but with the same internal dialogue and introspection about trying to do self-change because of their relationship without building on it. The introspection and character study into Miyazawa is neat but its feeling like its retreading the same ground without building on it and I'm only 3 volumes in. Don't get me wrong, I love the romance parts and when it goes further in exploring the Miyazawa's or Arima's situation or perfectionism it's good. But this volume felt like it was on a sort of auto-pilot with little growth. But again, the next volume with the girls could have Miyazawa break down and reflect on her past actions and consider how those around her interpret and react to her embracing her real and genuine self so I'm still looking ahead.

“Someday, I’ll be a high-ranking executive or a lawyer. I will run the elite, glorious path, showered by other people’s envy, until I ride to the top!
But then… (meeting Soichiro)… Later, I realized… that in fact, I had nothing at all.”

God, that scene made me tear up!!!!

And then both of their parents sticking up for their children got to me as well! Such a great unified moment. I particularly loved what Yukino’s father said, “A day in high school is far more precious and valuable to them now than entire month will be when they are adults.”

God, if that ain’t the truth!!!! We all want to be adults but then we get here and it’s nothing special. Enjoy your youth… enjoy your naivety and your innocence. It will all be lost when you grow up.

This series I swear. It has all these dramatic shots of Soichiro that I have a hard time taking it seriously. (It was hard to begin with simply because of Yukino’s personality.)

I was surprised at the events that occurred. It does make sense, I suppose, but to have a teacher/principal(?) crack down on the best students like this was new to me.

This is my second read of this book and it has exactly what I remembered it did. (I had previously read volumes 1-3 a year or so ago.)

Okay, this was too dumb. The conflict with the teacher made no sense whatsoever and the new conflict with the girls is also really bad. None of this makes actual sense and just causes the story to seem like there was no planning whatsoever of what was going to happen in the story.

Well, pacing issues ameliorated for sure but the new arc is disappointing. First arc was pretty good but could've been stretched longer, it still feels a bit too quick.

Today's post is on Kare Kano: his and her circumstances volume 3 by Masami Tsuda. It is 192 pages long and is published by Tokyopop. The cover has a new character at on it. The intended reader is someone who has read the first two, likes high school romance, and some over-the-top humor. There is no language, no sex, and no violence in this book. The story is told from Yukino's perspective. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

From the back of the book- Things are going well for Yukino and Soichiro. They have accepted each other for who they are, and have truly become boyfriend and girlfriend. But they've been concentrating more on each other than on their schoolwork. When the two best students in school suddenly let their grades drop, it draws the attention and concern of one of the teachers. He wants Yukino and Soichiro to break up so they can concentrate on their schoolwork again! And he even calls a dreaded parent-teacher conference to tell their parents his concerns. Will they really make Yukino and Soichiro break up?

Review- That is the first story of the book and it is really funny. Yukino and Soichiro have to put some breaks on their lover story but their parents are on their side. They know that school is important but they also want their children to be happy. It was handled well. The end of the book is about Yukino getting bullied now that she is being honest. Nothing dramatic but I do look forward to seeing her deal with it. Because she is going to make it be over-the-top. She is not going to handle this just sitting down.

I give this volume a Four out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this book with my own money.

Staremo a vedere.

I enjoy this series despite its rather loose nature and that the theme feel very faint at times (due I think to its age and that it is this mangaka's first series). I like that they are fighting to be free of the unhappiness that high school can put on one as you pursue your future at the expense of the present.

The majority of this volume is them avoiding studying to spend time as a couple. As a result he slips to 3rd and an A and she drops to 13th! I liked how they and their parents stood up for these two kids. In the end Miyazawa is starting to be bullied by the other girls but believes it is her just desserts.

I am actually uncomfortable with where this is going while at the same time commend it. Sometime we learn the hard way to be ourselves, yet I don't believe she deserves being attacked either.

BOTTOM LINE: Her relationships with the boys will endure either way.

Yukino is certainly going thorugh some learning experiences in volume 3. She decides to be herself and open her heart to love, but this means she studies less and her grades end up slipping. In the end she is called to the principal’s office, and vows to get her grades back. This explores the balance between emotional and social educaation, and school education. Yukino is happier as a person when she isn’t studying all the time, but she still wants to be first and wants to be the person that people look up to and go to their problems with.

The volume ends with the girls in Yukino’s year turning against her. I’m not a big fan of this type of storyline, so I hope it sorts itself out quickly. I really like the Miyazawa family dynamic, and that they are a loving normal family, and Yukino’s parents are so cute when they tell off the principal for accusing Yukino of slacking.

I was thinking the first three (?) chapters that a culture difference was showing. In my country we wouldn't be so alarmed when a students grade would drop one test. Not even the top two. Also I could not imagine we would go so far to suggest those top two students should break up for their own good.
It seems such an... 'alien' thing to do.

Then this page showed up:
description
And I was reminded that some things are universal. Such as parents who do trust their children because their children never gave them any reason not to. SO MUCH LOVE!

p.s. I forgot how awful peer pressure sometimes can be...
