i feel that they weren't emotionally ready for the step they took in their relationship. well, atleast for soichiro. he's looking to others (namely yukino) for personal validation and happiness. others can't do that for you. they can help you along with it, they can affect you and your emotions, but ultimately others can not control your feelings. using sex for self-validation, happiness and intimacy will end up being a dead end.

Kare Kano is a gut-wrenching and wild ride. If you have only seen the anime, then you are missing a lot of the meat of this story. Kare Kano follows the story of Yukino who strives to be an image of perfection. She’s beautiful, is at the top of her class, and seems naturally good at everything she tries. However, this perfection is a complete facade. Yukino’s home life reveals her to be a messy, rude, narcissist, who is obsessed with being the best. Yukino’s obsessive pursuits seem to be fueled by the praise and admiration she receives from those around her, it becomes clear that she has a crippling fear of failure. Meanwhile, her class rival, Soichiro aims for perfection for entirely different reasons. Soichiro’s perfect life aims to conceal his dark past as he tries to make up for the abuse and trauma he faced as a child. He clearly has an overwhelming fear of loss and rejection.

Throughout the story, these two characters’ lives intertwine as they learn one another’s secrets and help one another work through their problems. Each of them grows as individuals separate from one another, but they also grow as friends and eventually a couple. If you have watched the anime, then your perception of this story is probably that it is a romantic comedy. While you are not necessarily wrong, this manga reaches levels of depth and darkness that the anime definitely does not prepare you for. This story tackles topics like self-harm, suicide, domestic abuse, sexual assault, and unwanted pregnancy, and a whole slew of mental health-related issues. While the manga covers much of these topics with noticeable care and sensitivity, I will say that given that the manga ran from the mid-’90s to the early ’00s, its understanding of some of these issues can feel quite dated at times.
There are elements to this story that I think are actively harmful. Specifically, the great length’s to which Yukino attempts to heal Soichiro’s dark past. This establishes a narrative in which a woman’s strength is defined by her ability to stand by her man no matter what. Unfortunately, that kind of storytelling has real-world consequences no matter how realistic the depiction is in this case. While it is not at the forefront of the story-telling, this manga also perpetuates the idea that girls should pursue older men; that they have more to offer and are simply more suitable partners than more age-appropriate options. This is a sentiment that I absolutely do not agree with, and I believe it to be a harmful trope.

That being said, while this story is quite dark at times it has an undeniable honesty and relevancy to the narrative. In many ways, it feels realistic, even if it is uncomfortable, which is probably why so many manga readers still flock to this series years after its publication. If you liked Fruits Basket or Mars, then I think you would enjoy Kare Kano. I think Fruits Basket does a better job unpacking different kinds of trauma, especially in regards to toxic masculinity. However, for better or worse, Kare Kano never relies on metaphor or fantasy to soften the blow of hard-hitting topics and in that way feels all too real in its delivery.

This volume makes me really excited for the story going forward. Looking online it seems the story kinda transitions into a Soichiro-centric one a while in and I'm guessing that starts here. The beginning was quite wholesome with the ending to the Dad and Mom story. And Soichiro returns! It's exciting to see Soichiro and Miyazawa together again. With a whole volume with them apart you feel Miyazawa's excitement yourself. And as you go back into the groove of the relationship so does Miyazawa as she re-acclimates and falls in love a second time. That being said, her actions were a bit irritating
And then in the second half we get a story that takes a much darker and somber turn with seeing Arima's family who despises him and the toll it takes on him psychologically. I enjoy this darker twist. Maybe it'll go back into the perfectionist angle like the first and second volumes? Or maybe (probably) it'll go in a new direction! Either way I enjoy it.

I loved reading about Yukino’s dad and mom. I loved watching Hiro grow up with his grandpop. I was crying so hard over his grandpop. I wish I was as close to one of my relatives like Hiro was with his grandpop. I’m so damn envious.

Secondly, the next part of this volume was perfect! Yukino and Arima’s first time was perfectly executed. The mangaka didn’t tease it for ten volumes. She made it happen when the time felt right. Heck, I was pleasantly surprised that it happened a couple scenes after they talked about taking that next step! LOL

And lastly, the ending of this volume… Oooo I feel for Arima. He was born into a horrible family. Who would talk about a CHILD like that? Why are we damning the CHILD for their parents’ mistakes???!
So of course, Arima has trauma. And the mangaka did a great job showing how it’s always there. You can have such a great day and it will suddenly loom over you like a dark cloud.

“Feelings don’t have shape or weight. You can’t measure their size or how deep they run. And no one knows what they truly are.”

4.50 / 5.00

I almost forgot where we were in the story, so dropping in on Yukino’s parents’ story was a little confusing at first. But I wish we’d gotten a little more time with the early part of their marriage.

Yukino’s feelings of love felt very intense to me, but not really out of place. What did feel out of place was Soichiro’s bombshell confession of wanting to make love to Yukino. Yes, they are teenagers, and it’s to be expected, but I really didn’t think this manga would go in that direction. I thought we would stay in no-spice zone for the whole series, or at least a little longer.

Lanjutan cerita masa muda orangtua Yukino... yang bikin pembaca paham dan maklum kenapa mereka nikah muda. Psychologically, they needed to make this family.

I'm sorry, I just can't take this manga seriously. Between Arima calling Yukino's eyebrows sexy and his shadow self coming out of nowhere, this feels more like a comedy than anything else.

oday's post is on Kare Kano: his and her circumstances volume 6 by Masami Tsuda. It is 216 pages long and is published by Tokyopop. The cover has the two main characters on it. As it is the sixth in the long running series you need to have read the first five to understand the story. There is no language, sex, and no violence in this volume. The story is told from the third person close of the two main characters. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

From the back of the book- It's not long before Soichiro's back from a very successful tournament, much to Yukino's delight. Now they can spend some time with each other before school starts again. Yukino notices that Soichiro's matured a lot, which stirs up new feelins in her and makes her fall in love with him even more. Soichiro's feeling for Yukino deepen as well, and he has some difficulties dealing wit that and some family issues...

Review- We finish the story about how Yukino's parents married then we get back to Yukino and Soichiro. They have some good moments and then they decide to take their relationship to the next level. It was very tastefully done. We get to see Soichiro's family and they are horrible. They hate him because of things his father did almost twenty years ago. Because of this in his past, his relationship with Yukino is pushing into that pain. She loves him and that makes him scared. More drama ahead!

I give this volume a Five out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

Soichiro returns from a successful tournaments. He's grown taller and filled out a bit. When Yukino first sees him, she realizes her love for him has grown even more. Soichiro feels the same way about her and wants to move their relationship to the next level.

The beginning of the book tells of the romance between Yukino's mom and dad, but otherwise this entire book is about Yukino and Soichiro's deepening love for one another and how they might express it. Yukino's very shy and has a hard time telling Soichiro how she feels. Soichiro, on the other hand, remains calm, patiently waiting for her to tell him how she feels until he can't wait any longer and forces her to say it. Their relationship takes a huge leap forward in this book, turning into a beautiful thing. Now it's less of a high school infatuation or crush and more about a mature, loving relationship...even though they are technically still kids.

This volume begins with concluding the story between Yukino's parents. I loved it.

Then Soichiro comes back and they both realize their feelings for each other have developed deeper. I liked the visit Soichiro and his parents had with his parents. Well, not "like" in that it gave me pleasure, but it provided a deeper, darker look in what makes him him. Does anybody but Yukino have loving, both-still-alive/together parents...?

I have to say, I was a little unnerved with how intense he was in declaring he would not leave Yukino even if she avoided and ignored him. I know their feelings are mutual, but still... Well, I guess that's my paranoia.

The ending scene between the two was rather sweet. His nightmare was a nice touch, so it wasn't overly saccharine.

I was really looking forward to reading this volume. I think it was nice to be able to see the different relationships being developed even more. Tsubasa is so cute!!

I was, unfortunately, unable to see any of the really good scenes that I know were there, because there were pages missing from the library copy I borrowed. One minute, Yukino and Arima were alone and the next they are lying in bed asleep together....hmmm. Wonder what I missed there? [sarcastic tone] Also missed out on the brother-sister thing that occurred just before that. One minute I was introduced to the guy and the next, Tsubasa and he were already close. Hanging out at the mall, but I don't understand how their first encounter went seeing as it was torn out.

I hope to re-read this later in its entirety.... =p

Apparently, the metaphor for losing one's virginity is two children playing catch with a hat in the wind. Who knew?

I had prepared a longer review of this manga, but have decided to opt for brevity.

This volume treats teenage sex in a way that is both emotionally slight and visually bizarre. Although the sex is not pornographic, it's portrayal is suggestive while juxtaposed with images of children, flowers, and sweat. It's all very symbolic, but a bit much for me. Too kiddie pornish for my tastes.

Woah, that was good. It was a bit awkward to read in class cuz my teacher kept passing me by whenever I was reading it. Yeah its TOTALLY not obvious my teacher doesn't like the fact I read manga instead of reading a regular book. Well whatever, its not like I'll stop reading manga. I was glad when he suddenly came up to her at first without telling her, it was the perfect way to get Yukino's reaction about Arima. I think Arima may have looked a bit taller but I didn't notice any huge changes. WHERE IS HIDEAKI? And I absolutely love PeroPero
