The cultural festival in itself was not very interesting to me, feel like it dragged too long. But I am excited for Arimias future arc. Getting serial killar vibes atm.

Kare Kano is a gut-wrenching and wild ride. If you have only seen the anime, then you are missing a lot of the meat of this story. Kare Kano follows the story of Yukino who strives to be an image of perfection. She’s beautiful, is at the top of her class, and seems naturally good at everything she tries. However, this perfection is a complete facade. Yukino’s home life reveals her to be a messy, rude, narcissist, who is obsessed with being the best. Yukino’s obsessive pursuits seem to be fueled by the praise and admiration she receives from those around her, it becomes clear that she has a crippling fear of failure. Meanwhile, her class rival, Soichiro aims for perfection for entirely different reasons. Soichiro’s perfect life aims to conceal his dark past as he tries to make up for the abuse and trauma he faced as a child. He clearly has an overwhelming fear of loss and rejection.

Throughout the story, these two characters’ lives intertwine as they learn one another’s secrets and help one another work through their problems. Each of them grows as individuals separate from one another, but they also grow as friends and eventually a couple. If you have watched the anime, then your perception of this story is probably that it is a romantic comedy. While you are not necessarily wrong, this manga reaches levels of depth and darkness that the anime definitely does not prepare you for. This story tackles topics like self-harm, suicide, domestic abuse, sexual assault, and unwanted pregnancy, and a whole slew of mental health-related issues. While the manga covers much of these topics with noticeable care and sensitivity, I will say that given that the manga ran from the mid-’90s to the early ’00s, its understanding of some of these issues can feel quite dated at times.
There are elements to this story that I think are actively harmful. Specifically, the great length’s to which Yukino attempts to heal Soichiro’s dark past. This establishes a narrative in which a woman’s strength is defined by her ability to stand by her man no matter what. Unfortunately, that kind of storytelling has real-world consequences no matter how realistic the depiction is in this case. While it is not at the forefront of the story-telling, this manga also perpetuates the idea that girls should pursue older men; that they have more to offer and are simply more suitable partners than more age-appropriate options. This is a sentiment that I absolutely do not agree with, and I believe it to be a harmful trope.

That being said, while this story is quite dark at times it has an undeniable honesty and relevancy to the narrative. In many ways, it feels realistic, even if it is uncomfortable, which is probably why so many manga readers still flock to this series years after its publication. If you liked Fruits Basket or Mars, then I think you would enjoy Kare Kano. I think Fruits Basket does a better job unpacking different kinds of trauma, especially in regards to toxic masculinity. However, for better or worse, Kare Kano never relies on metaphor or fantasy to soften the blow of hard-hitting topics and in that way feels all too real in its delivery.

3.5/5 rounded down to 3. Its the ending of the cultural festival arc and while its good it didn't require 3ish volumes of setup, the introduction of Tonami, and constantly teasing of the more interesting future arc covering Arima.
I am not a fan of how Tonamis relationship was dealt with. I interpreted the girls opinions as wanting a relationship and having freedom or independence. I guess it was shooting him down? But then they talk it over and they're all happy again. I get Tonami misinterpreted her but this felt almost like an extra issue to put in to keep page count for each chapter rather than an interesting devlopment of Tonami and his love life.
The play part was nice. It felt at times like an extended oneshot (which had a plot I'm fairly receptive towards) but the art tricks to represent the stage lighting and dramatic techniques were amazing. Its ending was not my favorite though. But I enjoyed that Tsuda did try to give a through line by relating it to Arima (even if we don't see that outcome until later). I just wish we would get the Arima arc already! ;n;

That play resonated hard with Arima. He’s the Professor and the android is Yukino. He thinks she’s perfect and since his past haunts him, he thinks he doesn’t deserve “perfection”. I wish he would’ve stayed for the 2nd act….

The ending of this volume is sad… Arima feels like he’s losing Yukino. God, the mangaka really did a good job of illustrating how trauma/anxiety/dark feelings creep up on you when you’re feeling down… Some of these panels send a chill down my spine.

V. Cute. The cultural festival stretched on a bit too long, but oh well.

Today's post is on Kare Kano: his and her circumstances volume 9 by Masami Tsuda. As it is the ninth in the long running series, you need to have read the first eight to understand the story. It is 224 pages long and is published by Tokyopop. The cover has Aya and Rika on it. The intended reader is someone who likes high school love stories, cute romances, and humor. There is no language, no sex, and no violence in this book. The story is told from third person close of the main characters. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

From the back of the book- The culture festival begins with a bang- Kazuma's band Yin & Yang rocks the house, and the curtain finally opens on Aya's play! But not everybody's mind is on songs and spotlights. Poor Tonami hopelessly pines away over the elusive Tsubaki, who is the kind of woman who loves to be free- even if it means being alone.

Review- Most of this volume is the play which is an allegory for the story of the manga itself. Which is fun but after a little while I wanted to get back to what was really going on in the story. That said I really enjoyed the play. But I enjoying watching Tonami and Tsubaki come together with what they both need and want from a relationship. The things happening the background of the festival were fun and funny to read. Yukino and company do not get much character growth but with more sinister overtones around Soichiro; I am sure that is coming. What is a little drama in a high school manga? Totally needed that is what.

I give this volume a Four out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

i wasn't exactly interested in the play. i thought it was interesting that tsuda took so much time to draw out the play. it was fun seeing how it reflected both the characters in both stories and soichiro. it does give this series a sand castles kind of feel. i'm not particularly fond of melancholy plots, so i'm apprehensive about continuing the series. plus, i despised the last two lines in this book. you should never regret trying to expand your own horizons in a positive manner. you can regret neglecting other responsibilities, but never for bettering yourself.

This was my favourite in the series so far. This is the first book completely uncovered in the anime, and it deals largely with the play Aya writes entitled 'Steel Snow'. Barring a little development in the relationship between Tonami and Tsubasa, the rest of the book seems a little fillerish or inconsequential. Personally, I loved the play. This may be because I'm a little of a sci-fi person, plus Arima seems like my ideal in many ways.

More of the same, I guess, except with emphasis on the cultural festival and the play they were putting on. Because it had nothing to really do with the plot, I kind of skipped over most of the details, to be honest, but the end of it was certainly a good cliffhanger.~

This volume was extremely well put together. The play was fascinating, especially the impact that it had on Soichiro. The ending was downright ominous! I can't wait to find out how Soichiro's personal demons are going to throw a monkey wrench into their lives.

A love story that revolves around highschool students but remains interesting to span 20+ volumes. The art is unique and comical.
