Rosie Rushton began her career as a feature writer for a local paper. Staying Cool, Surviving School was her first book, published by Piccadilly Press in 1993. After writing another non-fiction title, You’re My Best Friend, I Hate You! (available from Puffin), Rosie turned to fiction.

This is Jane Austen’s “Emma” but in the modern world. I didn’t really enjoy this book, I found there were so many characters which were just there and not really very well developed. I also found Emma really annoying and shallow.

3.5 stars. This certainly isn't my favourite of the 21st century Austen books, but I still really enjoyed it and it was a quick read. I think these books are great for someone daunted about getting into Austen - they are a great introduction.

Tôi đã cố gắng để đọc hết cuốn sách trong ngày hôm kia, nhưng tất nhiên là đã không thành công. Phần đầu có vẻ khó nhằn hơn tôi tưởng (nhưng đoạn sau lại dễ nuốt hơn nhiều) nhất là cái kiểu văn rề rà hay chèn vô mấy thứ kinh tế xã hội khô khan khác hẳn với hai cuốn trước hay mô tả cái phần cổ nghệ thuật cổ điển thời kì Nhiếp chính (tôi đoán vậy, Jane Austen sáng tác chủ yếu lấy bối cảnh thời kì này). Đến cuốn này thì khác hẳn, Rushton viết cuốn này theo một tư tưởng hiện đại đến mức tôi cũng phải bất ngờ, thật đấy. Mà hơi thất vọng một chút, thật ra tôi muốn đọc thêm về nghệ thuật cơ.
Một nhóm bạn trẻ điều hành một khách sạn trong vài tuần vì một sự tình cờ khiến cho ông bà chủ bỗng nhiên mắc kẹt ở tít một nơi nào đấy với sự giúp đỡ của một MC chương trình Hành tinh xanh gần như cũng không giúp được gì lắm trừ việc lôi kéo được một cô phóng viên tài năng đến viết bài mà cô phóng viên đó ngẫu nhiên lại là người biết được bí mật mà tôi sẽ không nói là tôi có viết ở dưới đây của chủ nhân nổi tiếng của bữa tiệc đồng thời cũng xung đột với cô gái nữ chính vốn là con gái của vị MC kia đang đảm nhiệm công việc thay cho vị bà chủ bị kẹt cùng với cậu trai George vốn là con trai của cặp vợ chồng số nhọ này và không thể không đề cập đến hai người này lớn lên từ nhỏ bên nhau hai gia đình cũng rất khăng khít rồi bla bla cả mấy (chục) câu chuyện của các vị bạn quý hóa của cô gái nữ chính kia cùng đám kế hoạch mối mai không thể hiểu nổi nữa.
Thế rồi cả câu chuyện xoay quanh chuyện Emma (nữ chính đấy) đại diện khách sạn tổ chức party sinh nhật cho một vị khách nổi tiếng, Emma xinh đẹp tài giỏi quyết định hết cả cuộc đời của những người xung quanh, Emma tốt bụng giàu lòng vị tha, Emma tán tỉnh vị khách nổi tiếng, mà tôi sẽ không nói là đến cuối truyện tự nhiên vị khách này hóa ra là gay và Emma sau mấy tuần tim đập rộn ràng với cậu trai nổi tiếng kia bỗng nhiên lại nhận ra tình cảm sâu đậm suốt bao năm với anh chàng thơ ấu George chỉ vì cô bạn thân vừa thừa nhận mình thích anh ấy.
Đấy chắc là không có câu chuyện cổ điển nào như vậy đâu. Câu chuyện cổ điển nào mà lại có thứ nữ chính vừa ích kỷ vừa vô duyên như vậy nhỉ? Nó làm tôi khá là nghi ngờ không biết bản gốc Emma của Jane Austen như thế nào đây (thôi hãy tự nhủ rằng vì cô ấy còn trẻ quá).
Đến đây thì ngay cả văn phong dễ nuốt cũng không thể nào cứu sách được nữa, bù lại tôi đã cộng thêm điểm cho vì đoạn cuối Emma cuối cùng cũng đã cố gắng sửa đổi tính khí công chúa luôn tự làm mọi chuyện theo ý mình. Mà vẫn chỉ ở mức bốn hơn một tí thôi.
Với lại tôi bỗng nhận ra cái series này không phải có ba cuốn, mà là năm, lạy chúa hai cuốn kia tôi vứt đâu chả nhớ nữa. Có khổ cho tôi khônggg?

Confesso che questo retelling di Emma di Jane Austen, ben fatto, per carità, mi è piaciuto molto meno degli altri retelling di Rosie Rushton. L'unica cosa che mi è piaciuta davvero molto perché particolarmente attuale è stata il fatto che Jane Fairfax fosse in questo caso un ragazzo, Jake, e che Miss Bates fosse una sua cugina coetanea ma un po' invadente, Lily, amica di Emma fin dall'infanzia.
Jake è un musicista - così come Mr. Woodhouse, una ex stella del rock ormai fissata con l'ecologia (e quindi, immaginarlo ancora una volta interpretato da Bill Nighy è O B B L I G A T O R I O) - e la sua band si sta pian piano affermando dando concerti un po' in tutta l'Inghilterra. La storia è ambientata a Brighton durante le vacanze estive prima di partire per il college, e George Knightley è il vicino di casa dei Woodhouse la cui famiglia è stata costretta a trasformare la residenza di famiglia in un albergo di lusso (John Knightley e Isabella sono i genitori di George, che spesso sono in viaggio, lasciando il figlio a sbrigarsela da solo, anche con una gran penuria di fondi e di personale). Emma si offre di aiutarlo, ma naturalmente non ha nessuna voglia di ripulire le camere (lei parla solo di rifare i letti, vabbè), e così fa assumere Harriet, che invece vorrebbe un posto vicino all'acquario in cui lavora Rob, il ragazzo che le piace.
Ma Emma la convince che Theo Elton, un amico che circola per l'albergo chissà per quale motivo, sia interessato a lei (e questa parte della storia la sappiamo benissimo.)
Anche Mr. e Mrs. Weston sono due coetanei di Emma, Lucy, la migliore amica di Emma, e Adam, fratellastro minore di Freddie Churchill da parte di madre. Freddie è il figlio viziato di un grosso industriale della cioccolata, abituato a una vita di lussi, che decide di festeggiare i suoi ventun anni nell'hotel di George a patto che alla festa suonino gli Split Bamboo, il gruppo di Jake Fairfax.
In effetti, ripensandoci, la storia è originale e molto ben riadattata. Il problema è che - come nell'originale austeniano - Emma è davvero insopportabile, viziatissima e snob, tanto che alla fine mi ero stancata di lei... ma forse proprio qui sta la bravura di Rosie Rushton, nel riadattare la storia ai giorni nostri suscitando nei lettori praticamente le stesse sensazioni di Jane Austen!

I have finished this book!!!!!!!!!! It was really good. I loved the way that it was still Jane Austen's book Emma but it was a version that wasn't that boring and it was relevent to today's generation. I love the way that the book was hilarious in some parts and sad in others. The way that the main character acted made me want to laugh out loud in some parts and cry in others. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes romantic comedies/ romantic books/ comedy books etc (teenagers aged 13+ are the target audience).

While I appreciate the attempt to bring Jane Austen into the 21st century, I do not think this book did Austen justice by any means. All it seemed to do was sensationalize the story (which maybe is what modernizing it means...). Rushton did not seem to capture Austen's satirical style; while there was a bit of a lesson learned, the message just wasn't there. The characters were too static and even seemed to be confused at times, and the inclusion of the drinking, language, and *spoiler alert* homosexuality did more to take away from the plot than enhance it.

Good book with a good story line. The idea of this story is enticing and when I read the blurb I couldn't wait to start reading. However, I found the book slow in places and in a couple paragraphs throughout the book I began to get a bit bored. That said the climax was good and unexpected with a good surprise ending. An interesting story that's quite good, I'm afraid it wasn't exactly my cup of tea though.

This is not the best of the 3 books I've read from Rosie: The Secrets Of Love, Summer Of Secrets and this book. However, I thought the ending was good, and it could've been more interesting to me if there were less party planning and similar problems to that.
