Felidae #4

Das Duell

Rate this book

--Barbara Wegmann

Akif Pirinçci (pronunciation: [piːʁɪntʃi]) is a German writer of Turkish origin who is best known internationally for his novel Felidae.

Pirinçci was born on the 20th October 1959 in Istanbul, Turkey, but emigrated to Germany together with his parents in 1969. He began to write fiction at a young age, and published his first novel Tränen sind immer das Ende (literally, "tears always are the end") in 1980, at the age of 21. His next literary work, published in 1989, was the novel Felidae, a work of crime fiction with cats as the main protagonists. The novel has been translated into 17 languages and became an international bestseller. Due to the enormous success of the novel, Pirinçci expanded his concept of "cat crime fiction" and published several sequels to Felidae, out of which two, namely Francis (Felidae II) and Salve Roma, have been translated into English. An animated movie based on Felidae, the script of which had been co-written by Pirinçci, was produced in Germany in 1994, and was also dubbed in English. Pirinçci has published several other novels which were not set in the fictional reality of the Felidae series. Of these, his novel Die Damalstür -- based on which a movie was produced in Germany as well, and which is currently also under consideration for screen adaptation in Hollywood -- was recently translated and published in English under the title The Back Door.

Pirinçci currently lives in Bonn, the former capital of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Francis is the protagonist of yet another novel, now the 4th, and his adventures become increasingly bizarre, and yet always a pleasure to read.
It's winter and a dead cat has been found once more. Sad to hear it and initially reluctant to bother with it, the now almost elderly cat tries to deduce something about the weird occurrence of the murder: the cat hangs strangulated from a tree and seems completely frozen. But then another cat appears out of nothing and like a younger version of himself notices things that Francis did not notice and sparks an unnamed challenge between the two. And as new dead bodies are found, the challenge only continues in what will become a wild ride with a crazy end.

The idea of mixing the intermingling of human misdeeds and the world of cats is one of those trends that the author just can't seem to shake off. The first book was great because of its villain, and ever since then, the villains have been lacking. In this, for the longest part, the villain seems to be but a rival, but when the true culprit is uncovered, the book quickly falls apart. Still, a majority of the voyage until then was fun, and I rated the book as such.

Not unmissable, but if you liked the previous Felidae books, this is not that much worse.

I read the original version in German. No idea what the English version is actually called or if there is one. This is installment number 3. The first book in the series, "Felidae", was a huge hit in Germany. It's a crime novel and the detective is a cat called Francis. On one of his rounds he stumbles on the strangulated body of a fellow cat, presumably killed by a human. While Francis is investigating the crime scene, he is joined by Adrian, another cat from the neighbourhood. And Adrian has all the things that Francis is starting to loose now that he is getting older. He is better looking, a smarter talker, he is better at deducting the cause of death of their first gruesome find, more popular with the ladies... So as the case unfolds, a duell between those two adds to the suspense, until Adrian himself becomes a target of the cruel killer....

Well, I loved "Felidae", it was the first of its kind that I had read, it was dark, the story was scary... So I felt pretty let down by "The Duell". Not only had Francis aged, the story didn't exactly keep me awake at night either. Not bad, but doesn't make me want to buy another one in the series.

Dafuq did I just read?
